Abstract [en]

The Personal Digital Cellular (PDC) system for mobile communications used and located in Japan is similar to the European Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) but has some differences in functionality. One of the newer functions in PDC is the possibility to handle packet data. A new node has been introduced to handle the packet data subscribers. This node is called the PMSC (Packet Mobile Switching Center). To test the functionality of the packet data implementations in the Packet PDC (PPDC) system and to test the communication between the PMSC and the Visited Mobile Switching Center (VMSC) there has to be a way to simulate the PMSC. The aim of this thesis was to design and implement such a simulator. Installation and the investment of a real PMSC is a matter of large costs and time-consuming efforts. If such an investment would be done it would still take quite some time to adjust all the testing to a full hardware setup. There are also other advantages with a simulator that needs to be considered. When a simulator is used it is with much less effort the testers can make a numerous of test cases. With a simulator it also becomes very easy to just drop the connection or to skip a reply to the VMSC in order to track down a hidden fault. As for testing in a simulated PPDC environment the whole testing must be done with a simulated PMSC node.
