Abstract [en]

This master thesis is about how remote maintenance could be achieved in a system, delivered to a customer. The system is developed at Ericsson-Erisoft and is called NMS (Network Management System). The focus has been on security and controllability for the maintenance requestor. The work was ment to be, and has been, mostly research and evaluation, instead of development. The result, is a general and adaptable remote maintenance solution, which may be used in many contexts. It could be used for maintenance of NMS as well as other products, on its own, or together with other security systems. The solution consists of two separate parts, one for supporting command line interface applications, Shared Shell, which is a prototype developed within this thesis. The other solution is for graphical user interface applications and consists mainly of Virtual Network Computing (VNC), an X server developed by AT&T. Other existing software has also been used, such as, Secure SHell, Bourne-Again SHell and Compaq TeMIP.
