Shear resistance of welded stainless steel girders

Abstract [en]

In this thesis is a study of the shear resistance of welded stainless steel girders presented. The study included laboratory tests and comparisons between test results and resistances according to design codes and numerical simulations. Design codes considered were: Eurocode 3, part 1.4 and Eurocode 3, part 1.5. The numerical simulations were performed utilizing the finite element package ABAQUS, version 5.7. The experimental study comprised four welded I-shaped girders having two different geometrys. Two steel grades were considered: The austenitic grade 1.4301, AISI 304, and the austenitic-ferritic grade 1.4462, Duplex 2205, according to EN 10 088. The comparison between the experimental results and the predicted resistance's according to design codes showed that the design procedure in Eurocode 3 underestimate the shear resistance of the girders that were investigated. It was found that it was not possible to acceptably catch the behaviour of the tested girders with the numerical simulations performed.
