State of the art regarding information presentation in car clusters today

Abstract [en]

The final part of the education Master of Science in Ergonomic Design and Production Engineering, at Luleå University of Technology, is a 20 week long degree thesis. The project starting in September 2006 is performed at Volvo Car Corporation (VCC), in Gothenburg. The assignment is to carry out a large investigation concerning the way information is presented in cars today and to generate a concept proposal fitting the values of VCC. The purpose of the assignment is to improve the interaction between the driver and the information presented in the cluster for upcoming VCC cars. An internal analysis is made to find the values of VCC. The values of VCC are obtained in a company investigation through a research on the company website and through discussions with VCC employees. Interviews at different departments within the company are also conducted. A function specifications list of future desired functions is received from VCC. An external analysis is made to find how different car brands and their car models present information in the cluster by collecting, analysing and finding trends among a large amount of interior and exterior pictures. The same procedure is also made for the internal analysis of VCC cars. Some of the pictures are also used in a Kansei study. The customer opinions are considered in a Kansei study: a study that translates feelings and impressions into product parameters. The internal and external analyses are used as input in a Concept content specifications list, which is used as a basis for the concept generation. The functions in the Concept content specifications list are categorised in three different relevant ways: according to priority level, natural grouping and size, to generate cluster proposals. The different cluster proposals are combined to form a final ultimate cluster from a placement perspective. The result of this project is a Concept content specifications list that presents what information a cluster should consist of and how the information should be presented, to express the values of VCC. It also results in a concept proposal of a cluster which shows how the information should be placed in the cluster and whether the information is presented permanently or temporarily.
