A study in how to recognize and accentuate manufacturing problems at Volvo Trucks, and how to increase influences

Abstract [en]

It is keen competitions within the vehicle industry market were large companies purchases smaller companies to widen their assortment. With a wide assortment the companies is forced to have a reliable and efficient production or process and generate high qualitative products to maintain competitive. Demands will also increase on other areas of responsibility besides the production to make the company competitive. All employees must work together and set shared demands to actively develop their company. The productions responsibility is to set demands against other departments within the company so that the process not will be afflicted with increased assortment. Optimizing and render the production more effective is a requirement for all implementation of new and increased amount of articles. This master thesis has been executed on the department of Production engineering (29580) at Volvo Trucks Corporation in Gothenburg, Sweden, during the autumn in 2007. Volvo Trucks plant in Gothenburg produces over 24000 complete trucks each year of the heavy-duty models FM and FH. These are Volvo Trucks most popular models with a large demand on the market. The increasing order intakes have evoked the interest and the requirement to raise the capacity further which will set tougher demands on the production and the manual assembly. Volvo Trucks are today working with a very complicated and advanced products were each truck is unique and custom made. The assortment is wide and consists of a great variety of articles. This make the manual assembly more difficult and the quality have decreased on the assembly line. Despite the large area of responsibility the production technician comprises, their influence in decision making in questions concerning the production is limited. The bad influence results in difficulties motivating ideas for improvements in the production. If they can demonstrate the extension of the results and influence the proposal made, their influence will increase. The purpose of this thesis is to create a strategy for the assembly process, which will facilitate the production technician’s work with assembly sequence and product introduction in the process. The purpose is also to increase the technicians influence in production related issues and increase their understanding in how to simplify the process. After our own participation working on the assembly line and several interviews with engineers, specialists, the head of the engineering department, project leaders and the assembly workers, could an opinion of the situation and the most important problems be formed. It became clear after these interviews and observations that a change is necessary and that our most impressionable area to increase the engineers influence is to indicate what a problem cost for the production. It became clear that many of the problems could be tied to different factors which underlies the emergence of the problems. Solutions of these problems and discussions around these factors would also improve the production engineers work with improvements measurement and thereby the efficiency of the process. The result of this thesis is a tool that consists of two parts. One theoretical part for providing an increased knowledge in how to improve the production process. The common focus for this part is simplification. The other part is a cost template that works as a complement for the production engineers in argumentation with other divisions. It summarizes what a specific problem cost for the production. The goal was to create a strategy, but the usage of a tool increases the possibility to increase the production engineers influence when the application of the tool is higher than the use of a strategy. However, all goals are fulfilled with the tool. Our recommendation is to continue working with the tool. One way to expand the tool is to find out or decide a reasonable standard amount on costs for different problems. In this way will the tool cover more problem areas than today. The tool is also functional when using it for educational purposes, mainly for new employees.
