Process mapping of production flows: a case study at AstraZeneca Liquid Production Sweden
2001 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This master’s thesis has been conducted at the Pharmaceutical Factory II at AstraZeneca Liquid Production in Södertälje. Due to an increased demand from the market, the factory has grown rapidly over the last few years, which has resulted in new production lines and a complex flow. Moreover, additional lines will in a near future be taken into production. The purpose with this master’s thesis is to document the present production process in flowcharts, identify risks and problem areas and give suggestions on improvements. The flow will be investigated both regarding products and documents. Furthermore, the future flow with additional lines will also be mapped out and analysed. To gather information about the flow, personal interviews and observations were used. The information was analysed with the help of existing theory and problem areas and risks were identified. The main problems were low machine efficiency and long set-up times, insufficient measurement and feedback, lack of motivation, extensive documentation and problems with prioritising in the packing. In order to improve the machine efficiency and the set-up times, parameters that should be measured as well as target goal values must be established. Approved reasons for a set-up time longer than the target goal value should be introduced. The results of the measurements should be visualised and the reasons for problems must be followed-up. To improve the motivation, the feedback has to increase so that the operators see their contribution to the total result. An educational program to enable operators to develop should be introduced, which could serve as a motivator. The extensive batch production record should be reviewed and simplified. One step in the examination process of the batch production records could be eliminated and the total lead-time reduced. In the future flow a planning tool must be introduced in order to handle the complex flow to the packing machines and make it possible to prioritise. The main conclusion in this master’s thesis is that AstraZeneca Liquid Production Sweden must work more with motivation among the employees, clear target goal values and measurements as well as follow-ups and continuous improvements.
