This study was conducted together with the Swedish energy companyVattenfall. Focus of the study is analysis of the data center market. As the amount of data our society creates and needs to process and store is rising every year, so do facilities filled with servers that take care of the data – data centers. High energy consumption and possibility for energy efficiency measures make data centers an attractive market for energy utilities. The topic is very new to the academic world and data centers as a market were discussed in a small number of previous studies. The purpose of the thesis is to describe the global market with data center establishments, shown on a case of the Swedish energy company Vattenfall AB.Three research questions were formulated, first one focused on market segmentation, the second one on value creation and the third one on clustering. Almost 20 industry managers were interviewed on their approach to the market. One of the most important findings is that the industry’s view of the segmentation might vary, but some clear categories could be identified. Segmentation of individual businesses is naturally dependent on their core business and their approach to the market. As an important tool in value creation in the market the thesis identifies social networking, both as a social activity and virtual social networks, for example LinkedIn.The market experiences a clear trend of creation of geographical areas, clusters, of data centers and related businesses. This is not only a current trend, but historically several clusters arose in areas with strong financial trading or other prerequisites to the needs of computing capacity. This was visible for example in Silicon Valley, London, Amsterdam or Hong Kong.Due to rising costs for computing data center operators are considering move to more distant area, like Sweden or Oregon. Regions with good infrastructure should try to target investments, as data center investors are looking for expansion and cost savings.
