Latvia's way to the European Union: integration and challenges
2002 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

Evere since regaining its independence in 1990 has Latvia actively been working on integration in Europe. One of the decissions made was to apply for the membership in the EU, which has become one of the primary priorities in Latvia's foreign policy. There are several criteria the EU candidate country has to meet such as political and economical. The current EU states put very high weight to the four basic rights: free movement of goods, capital, services and people. An issue, which has been highlighted quite often during the past ten years is the minority issue. In this work I have taken a look at the challenges Latvia has met on its way to the EU and the actions, which have already been taken to ensure a successful accession to the EU.
