A study of impulse noise in Telia's loop plant

Abstract [en]

Impulse noise is one of the major impairments for high-speed data transmission over the telephone network. In this thesis impulse noise and its characteristics are studied. Based on information about impulse noise published by other large foreign telecom operators a measurement equipment has been put together, and introductory measurements have been performed. A difference has been made between impulse noise generated by telephone activity on the same copper pair, and impulse noise generated by external sources. Recommendations have been given regarding future measurements, based on information from the different measurements. The recommendations differ slightly depending on which aspect of impulse noise that will be considered. Telephone activity on the same copper pair proved to generate the strongest and most damaging impulse noise, and it is therefor recommended that the splitter performance should be examined more thoroughly.
