Gestamp Hardtech is a world leading developer in press hardening technology. They produce a range of car components used in the automotive industry. The tooling department of the company is seated in Luleå, Sweden. This department is responsible for design and manufacturing of prototype and production tools. The development is conducted with 3-D CAD software such as I-DEAS 12 and CATIA v5. The company wants to move their development platform to the CAD software NX since I-DEAS is no longer maintained. Because of this change, the company will also implement the PLM-system Teamcenter. This project aims to create a new start model for press hardening tools that works with NX and should be easy to use and copy in to a new project in Teamcenter. By reusing certain parts of the construction the engineers don´t have to remake the same basic part s of every new press hardening tool that is in development. Since this will save time for the engineers it will be more cost effective to use the start model. The goal of the project has been to account for the pros and cons with different methods of copying the start model in Teamcenter. In addition to this, different assembly structures will be studied to find the most appropriate one for the tool department. A start model prototype will also be built. The project was initiated with a literature study that included student theses done previously within the company and the help documentation of NX and Teamcenter, A need-finding study was performed to find the needs and requirement of the engineers working at the tool department. This evolved into a list of demands and request to have in mind when creating the start model. Through the literature study and an independent study of the program, four methods of copying the start models were found. These four methods were tested and two of them were deemed inappropriate. The remaining two; “Reuse Library” and “Clone Assembly” were quite similar in use and the final decision of which one to use was left to Gestamp Hardtech. The assembly structure of the start model was evaluated in several steps. After a number of meetings with the tooling department it was decided that the start model should only contain die sets, adapters, form dies and press interface geometry. In addition to this the start model should also contain expressions that control the dimensions within the assembly and coordinate systems that will make the placement of standard components easier. To simplify the work even further the coordinate systems were colorized according to a new standard. All features, coordinate systems and expressions were named by the guide lines in”NX Machinery Library. Standard part creation. Best practice” by Siemens. By correctly naming and coloring the features and coordinate systems it is easier to find and navigate among the different options.
