The impact of Sweden's non-membership in the EMU on American investments in Sweden: a survey of seven American owned companies

Abstract [en]

When companies are selecting target country for Foreign Direct Investment’s (FDI), they evaluate the investment climate of each potential country. A membership in the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) would effect the Swedish investment climate. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the extent Sweden’s current and future position with regard to the EMU affect American investors’ perception of Sweden as a target country for FDI. To reach our purpose we have conducted a survey on American owned companies established in Sweden during 1995-1997. Our results show that Sweden’s non- membership in the EMU has so far not affected the investment climate from the perspective of American investors. However, the results also show that it will have an increased importance in the future, as the American investors claim they will increase their investments if Sweden joins the EMU and decrease the investments if Sweden decides not to join.
