Knowledge based engineering: a tool for concurrent engineering?

Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) is a software technology that enables automation and integration of every day business and technical tasks in order to solve design, manufacturing or sales related problems. This is achieved by a combination of rules, databases and in some cases geometry to produce a "smart model" which can then provide fast solutions to the problem. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the possibilities of using KBE to develop effective engineering tools within mechanical engineering. The thesis will also try to answer whether a KBE system can reduce lead times in design and manufacturing. The conclusion was based on facts from litterature and a case study. We found that KBE is able to reduce lead times when the task it replaces is repetitive, a KBE system is also very suitable as a concurrent engineering tool.
