Abstract [en]

In today's communication network, a service of no disruption is of great importance. This means that the network have to provide continuity of service when node and fibre failures occur. A survivable network is therefore needed and it can use several types of protection schemes. In this Master thesis two protection schemes are discussed and evaluated. An optical network model was developed in OPNET and it uses line protection and path protection to guarantee service. The line protection scheme is a bit slower than the path protection scheme but need less resource. Which one of them to choose depends on the size of the network and how much redundant capacity that is available. In a small network with a lot of redundancy path protection can be used, otherwise line protection is preferred.
