A Study of the British translation of "Madicken" (Mardie)
2001 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to find out if the English translation of "Mardie" by Patricia Carmpton, equals the original text, especially considering the sense and the style of the original version. Astrid Lindgren's language is colourful, vivid and poetic. Furthermore her language is full of repetitions, exaggerations and dialectal as well as colloquial expressions. Her characteristics as an author make her very difficult to translate. In the translation of "Mardie", there are quite a few examples of alterations of the original text. However, alterations in translation are inevitable, since a word-for-word translation is not always possible if a satisfactory translation is to be obtained. Most of the alterations found in "Mardie" are only minor ones and have mostly been made due to the different linguistic and cultural environments between the languages. The reading experience of the translation, though, does not entirely equal the original version. Some of the comic, playful and inventive language of Lindgren is lost. She has been able, however, to preserve much of the poetic tone.
