Abstract [en]

In later years the interest for broad band services has increased and with it the need for higher transmission speed. Technologies that enable high bit rate communication over the already deployed copper access network are the members of the xDSL family. Two of the xDSL technologies are considered within this thesis, ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) and VDSL (Very high bit rate Digital Subscriber Line). ADSL and VDSL use high-speed modems that communicate on the same pair of wires as POTS (Plain Old Telephony System) but they occupy other frequency bands than POTS. The low frequency POTS signal and the high frequency ADSL/VDSL signal are separated using filters, one at the customer and one at the station, which are called "splitters". Within this thesis, measurements and analysis of the splitter functionality have been performed. The analysis was divided into two parts. The first part was to examine how well the splitters fulfilled functionality requirements that were specified for them. The second part was to examine how the splitters handle high frequency impulsive noise generated from telephony activities.
