Interoperability of software components

Abstract [en]

This Master Thesis investigates the problems with software component interoperability and requirements of software components. Component-based development gives a new approach of improving software development and software applications by introducing software components. The thesis has focused of the requirements regarding interoperability: the most interesting categories included in the thesis are the choice of a possible standard component technology and the component specification. The most interesting conclusions of the research are, for highest ineroperability it is a valuable option to integrate a standard component technology, and the most developed and suitable is CORBA 3.0 CCM. This standard component technology is the one most developed regarding interoperability and has also best chances for a future marketplace of software components. The other important conclusion made, is the importance of a well-described component specification. A component specification is the face of a software component and must describe all characteristics from functionality of the software component to possible future work. This thesis gives a suggestion of several categories to be included in a component specification: it also gives suggestions of how to present the component specification. The categories to be desribed in the specification are, the static structure, which is divided into two parts: realized and required interfaces of the component and component dependencies. The other categories are the dynamic behaviour of a component, physical requirements, different constraints, quality requirements and additional information. The component specification is best described in a format of UML diagrams in combination of XML.
