Project: Sustainable Management of Primary Raw Materials through a better approach in Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (SUPRIM)

Abstract [en]

In order to assure and assess the sustainability of the supply, reliable datasets and adequate assessment methodologies are required, which is the main objective of this project. This is also reflected in the first strategic objective of the KIC: ‘securing raw materials supply’, especially when it comes down to ‘enhance more economically viable and sustainable raw materials supply’. The scope of the project is very closely linked to the knowledge and innovation theme: Exploration and raw materials resource assessment.This project aims at serving the entire primary raw materials sector, going beyond the partners involved in the project. By providing a service which can assist in the transition towards a more sustainable management of primary raw material extraction, it will enable a more objective and sustainable image for the primary raw materials sector in Europe, keeping in mind that raw materials are nowadays more and more sourced from secondary sources as well. Results of this project should enable industry savings due to more meaningful assessment of primary sector activities and, in the end, improve the attractiveness of the primary raw mate-rials sector and result in less barriers to new investments.. Results of this project are not lim-ited to any specific class of raw materials and not limited to any of the KIC target markets but will be widely applicable to a broad range of metal and mineral resources for a wide number of applications and will therefore have a significant impact on the entire European and worldwide primary raw materials sector.By collaboration of world-class universities in mining (Lulea University) and sustainability as-sessment (Ghent University, Leiden University), together with renowned research institutes (Tecnalia), industrial partners (Boliden, Cobre las Cruces) and a prominent sector organization (Euromines), we hope to guarantee the impact of this project. Based on recent developments, recent literature (Dewulf et al. 2015 http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.est.5b00734 ; Drielsma et al. 2016 http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11367-015-0991-7) and the industrial interest, we are convinced of the strategic importance and the impact of the project.
