Abstract [en]

This thesis presents the development process to create a new concept for a chassis design for an electric wheelchair from Mercado Medic, developer and producer of chairsand electric indoor wheelchairs for medical purposes. The work was performed between January and June of 2018 in Sollentuna for a Master of Science degree title in Industrial Design Engineering and worth 30 Swedish university credits. The initialphase has consisted of a thorough investigation into the performance of the current product by observing and interviewing stakeholders relevant for the project resulting in a list of both problems and needs. A benchmarking of current products on the market as well as relevant theories have also been explored during this phase. An ideation phase has followed, utilizing severalcreative methods that generated many different ideas. The different ideas were then combined into four main body conceptsand five link arm concepts. By evaluating the different concept ideas, a finalshape for the main body and link arms were decided. During the detail design an iterative process was applied, and the placement and final shapes of the remaining components were decided basing the decisions on the theories explored in the initial stages of the project. The final concept utilizes a small footprint and a mid-wheel drive, maintaining the aspects of the current chassis deemed positive by the stakeholders. The motor configuration has been changed to instead utilize an angled gearbox to increase the chances for a reliable freewheel switch setup. The different parts for the concept have been designed for an easy assembly process and simple service procedures.
