Bearing Capacity of Soil Layers between Shallow Foundations and near Surface Bedrock: A Laboratory Study on Geotechnical Properties

Abstract [en]

Shallow foundations are a common design for the base of any construction. Allowable ground pressure limits below such foundations are until today calculated based on Terzaghis General Bearing Capacity Equation, which gives a limit to the maximal allowable value. Shallow bed rock levels are a common scenario on Swedish construction sites and its effect on the allowable bearing capacity is not considered yet. This Master Thesis investigates the increase of bearing capacity for foundations on a thin soil layer above bedrock. In a laboratory 1G model scale test, a model foundation’s settlement under loading is investigated. It is observed that ground failure comes to a stop as the remaining soil layer thickness is sufficiently thin. From this point on bearing capacity increases significantly. The results are compared to literature and a study in PLAXIS 2-D. The results are judged indicative and further laboratory testing with usage of a centrifuge is recommended.
