Preferences for leadership: A qualitative study with Swedish and Finnish employees

Abstract [en]

This thesis has examined whether cultural differences influences employees’ preferences for leadership. The focus has been on the two neighbouring countries Sweden and Finland, which has much in common and great cooperation but still differ to some extent in their cultures. The biggest difference between Swedes and Finns is the extent to which they avoid uncertainty. There also appear to be differences between Swedish and Finnish employees’ expectations of leadership, of which Swedish employees prefer more empowering and communication than Finnish employees.

To gain a deeper understanding of what similarities and differences there exist between Swedish and Finnish employees’ preferences for leadership, data was collected through two semistructured interviews. The interviews were conducted with one Finnish employee and one Swedish employee, both of whom work as salesmen at the same company. The result indicates that there are more similarities than differences between the Swedish and Finnish employees in terms of preferences for leadership. Neither the Swedish nor the Finnish respondent had a clear preference regarding the degree to which they avoid uncertainty. Furthermore, they both had a high preference for empowering as well as communication.

Denna studie har undersökt om kulturella skillnader påverkar anställdas preferenser för ledarskap. Studien har fokuserat på de två grannländerna Sverige och Finland, vilka har mycket gemensamt och ett stort samarbete men ändå skiljer sig till viss del i sina kulturer. Den största skillnaden finns i vilken grad svenskar och finländare undviker osäkerhet. Det verkar även finnas skillnader mellan svenska och finska anställdas förväntningar på ledarskap, varav svenska anställda föredrar mer befogenhet och kommunikation än finska anställda.

För att få en djupare förståelse av vilka likheter och skillnader som finns mellan svenska och finska anställdas preferenser för ledarskap, har data samlats in genom två semistrukturerade intervjuer. Intervjuerna genomfördes med en finsk anställd respektive en svensk anställd, vilka båda arbetar som säljare på samma företag. Resultatet indikerar att det finns fler likheter än skillnader mellan den svenska och den finska anställdas preferenser för ledarskap. Varken den svenska eller den finska respondenten hade en tydlig preferens gällande i vilken grad de föredrar att undvika osäkerhet. Utöver det, så föredrog båda även en hög grad av befogenhet och mycket kommunikation.
