Abstract [en]

The boundaries between work and private life has begun to diminish and therefore it has become a challenge to establish and maintain a balance between the two spheres. Among teachers, the workload is usually high and to bring work home is common. For women, it can be particularly difficult to balance work and private life because women usually spend a lot of time on domestic work and caring for children. The purpose of the study is therefore to examine the boundless work of female primary school teachers and how they experience the work-life balance and to map which strategies are used to create a balance between these spheres. The study has a qualitative approach and the results are based on ten semi-structured interviews with female primary school teachers and mentors from three different schools in Luleå municipality. The results show that female primary school teachers may have difficulty establishing and maintaining boundaries between the two spheres. The experience of balance between the spheres varies, but the difficulty of mentally disconnecting from work seems inevitable. In order to be able to handle the profession and the high workload, teachers are forced to work overtime and use cross-border strategies that not only affect the private life, but is also a risk for the teachers' health. Strategies such as creating routines, devoting time to leisure activities and keeping work and private life separate are used to promote the balance between the spheres, but the high workload may force such strategies to be set aside and it becomes impossible to exclude work from private life. The consequence is an experience of imbalance between the spheres.
