Abstract [en]
In this Master Thesis the packaging process of polyethylene granulates is analyzed to identify potential bottlenecks. By incorporating existing bottleneck detection methods, statistical analysis and available unplanned stops data a simulation model was built. By then implementing the utilization method, four bottlenecks were identified that shifted based on the product being packaged: wrapper, packaging machine, Pelletron & Zeppelin pneumatic conveying systems and 600/700 pneumatic conveying system. By then implementing the Theory of Constraints philosophy, the potential improvements that could be made to combat the bottlenecks and improve the throughput were analyzed. By matching the main bottlenecks to the secondary bottlenecks for each product a average increase in the throughput can be seen: +3,2% for the wrapper, +6,8% for the 600/700 pneumatic conveying system, +2,8% for the Pelletron & Zeppelin pneumatic conveying systems and +0,2% to +28,9% for the packaging machine. In addition to this, a +0,8% increase in the throughput for the wrapper can be seen if the buffer size increases from 1 pallet to 2 pallets, because of an increase in the utilization percentage. If instead the wrapper is set to overcapacity an increase of 3,7% can be seen, because of greater support of the upstream processes.
