Tribological Benchmark Wear Test

Abstract [en]

Oerlikon provides a wide range of coating variants within its portfolio. These coatings are mainly characterized by their thin coating thickness, high hardness and a resistant wear protection. The purpose of the project is to find a feasible substitution for Hard Chromium VI Electro Plating and demonstrate the potential alternatives in order to change this hazardous compound. Nine different coatings are coated by PVD method with different compositions (e.g. CrN, AlTiN, AlCrN…). The goal is to obtain wear data mainly focused on abrasion, corrosion and erosion with different test rigs located in the Application Lab in Balzers. At the end, a compilation of test results are collected and ranked, explaining and giving scientific explanations for each physical phenomena appearing during the experiments. At the end of the thesis, a generically comparison between all the coatings is concluded and classified according to their performance.
