Abstract [en]

This is a thesis project that seeks to answer the question: How to animate cloth in 3D for stylized fastpaced action films? A few different techniques were tested and judged. The most appropriate method forstylized cloth animation for my project was a combination of cloth simulation and animation. This report explores effective techniques for animating cloth in stylized 3D animations, particularlyfocusing on methods suitable for projects involving rapid movements, jumps, and flips. The aim is to gaininsight into industry techniques to achieve cloth-like animation for capes and loosely hanging clothing. The project involves a short action film featuring a character reminiscent of Red Riding Hood, wielding ascythe and wearing a cape. The primary objective is to determine the best method for animating the cape. This 10-week thesis project is a solo endeavor. After evaluating available cloth animation options, aselection of methods will be tested using a demo clip from the film, assessing factors such as control, timeefficiency, and final outcomes. Although the focus is project-specific, the report provides a generaloverview of available techniques and their pros and cons. The film's emphasis is on combat and fastmovements, drawing inspiration from Monty Oum's "Red Trailer." The stylized nature of the film allowsfor a more artistic approach to cloth animation, aiming to capture swaying motion as if in the wind. Theintention is to enhance animation skills, with asset creation taking a secondary role. The character isalready rigged, and the goal is to add a cape to the existing rig.The optimal method identified for achieving the desired cape animation is a combination of rigging andsimulation. The report primarily focuses on Blender for research and implementation due to personalpreference and ease of use. While the implementation details may be biased towards Blender, theunderlying concepts are applicable to various 3D software options.
