Classification of railway vehicles and their contribution to the track degradation

Abstract [en]

This paper presents a method to use real time force data from enhanced wayside monitoring stations to classify railway vehicles contribution to the overall track degradation. The major advantage of doing so compared to classifications based on theoretic simulation only is that the vehicle maintenance conditions can be automatically taken into account. A potential use of the classification is to adjust track access charges according to the real state of each operator's fleet. Operators with well-maintained vehicles shown by measured low impact on track could then be favoured on, i.e., yearly updates of the fee. The paper gives three examples of three different train types and how they can be compared.
