This paper summarizes the present knowledge of an early Proterozoic porphyry type mineralization at Tallberg in the Skellefte district, northern Sweden. Ore potential and implications on exploration are also briefly discussed. The Tallberg mineralization is situated in the c. 1890 Ma Svecokarelian Jrn granitoid complex. The setting in early orogenic granitoids comagmatic with island are volcanics, the type of mineralization (disseminated and vein type Cu, Mo, and Au), and the propylitic and phyllic alteration around subvolcanic quartz-feldspar porphyritic stocks resemble those of Phanerozoic porphyry copper deposits. The gold is interpreted to have been partly remobilized into shear zones, corresponding to lines of weakness set up by early stress fields.
