After noting the stagnation in metal demand in industrialized countries and continued albeit slower demand in developing countries after 1974, the paper surveys alternative approaches that have been used to determine or forecast demand trends. The distinction between reported consumption and total metal absorption is explored and its relevance to demand analysis in developing countries is emphasized. An agenda for future research is presented. An appendix surveys data since 1960 on consumption and intensity of use for six metals in nine developing and five industrialized countries. (4 refs.)
