Abstract [en]

Determination of rock fracture toughness generally utilizes rectangular beam specimens, following the test procedures for metal materials. With this method, the required rock specimen size is very large, and precracking is necessary. Furthermore, the 5% offset secant procedure for the metal fracture toughness test does not suit rock materials, because rock does not exhibit plastic hardening behaviour as metal does. Therefore, new specimen geometries and test methods have to be developed for determining the fracture toughness of rock
