Abstract [en]

There has existed a dominating idea among palaeographers that the Latin script in Western Europe in the late Middle Ages was divided into a number of national variants. This idea has been confronted in later years, above all by Albert Derolez in his The palaeography of gothic manuscript books (2003). When it comes to Sweden, Nils Dverstorp has followed his predecessor, and nvincingly shown that what has been known as “Vadstenastilen”, the Swedish national script, has few if any characteristics that separates it from the general Western uropean script. I here follow up the arguments presented by Dverstorp, and scrutinize the foundations of the idea of the “Vadstenastil”. I show that the basic articles in which the idea is presented holds a low standard from a methodological, scientific viewpoint. I show this, among other things, by a number of digitally constructed alphabets from the examples pointed out in the articles, and thus pointing at the necessity for palaeographers to use digital tools.
