Priming vid ordstamskomplettering2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This quantitative study aims to investigate the correlation between individuals' perceived work motivation and its personality traits. Increased knowledge in this field has been shown to enable improvements in personnel work, including management and recruitment. The purpose of the study led to three hypotheses, one of which concerned the relationship between external work motivation and the personality trait neuroticism and one of which concerned internal work motivation and the personality traits extraversion, conscientiousness and openness. The third hypothesis examined age differences in motivational factors at work – where an assumption was made that internal work motivation would be seen among participants with older age. A quantitative questionnaire survey was used as the method in which two previously validated measuring instruments formed the main part of the survey. The Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale (MWMS) was used to examine perceived work motivation and the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) to examine personality traits among participants. The result was analyzed with Spearman's correlation analysis, whereupon a number of correlations could be seen. The results of the study were able to confirm two of the hypotheses – where a correlation could be seen between internal work motivation and the personality traits extraversion as well as openness. A correlation could also be seen between the age categories and the work motivation factors, which showed that participants with older age were motivated to a greater extent by internal work motivation in comparison to external work motivation as well as amotivation. In summary, the results of the study could show perceived work motivation and its correlation with personality traits as well as age.

Effects of Self-Stigma Among the People With Schizophrenia2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

People who are diagnosed with schizophrenia experience prejudice and discrimination both in the society and in their own world as a form of internalization which is also called as self-stigma. Although public stigma is occurred by a larger population, self-stigma also plays an important role by having patients suffer numerous negative consequences. In this article, I focused on those negative consequences of self-stigma for people with schizophrenia. Furthermore, I examined how the negative effects of the stigma plays an important role during the treatment process. As a method, I interviewed 10 patients who were diagnosed with schizophrenia based on 10 open-ended questions and analyzed the data afterwards which helped me understand the negative effects of internalized self-stigma on them. The majority of the responses indicated that they were worried to be viewed unfavorably which led them avoid telling their mental illness to others. The results also showed that they have poor quality of life, little to none social interactions and troubles continuing their medical and therapeutic treatments because of their internalized negative thoughts.

Smartphone, emotionell reglering, depression och upplevt socialt stöd: En kvantitativ korrelationsstudie2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Problems due to smartphone use have been around for a long time and have increased in recent years. Smartphone has become one of the most important technical resources in the individual's everyday life. It is considered a societal problem when it affects us at working life, at school, in private life and leisure time. Because injuries from smartphone use can suffer for the individual when it becomes a contributing factor to mental illness such as difficulties in emotion regulation, depression and distant social support for the environment. The present study addresses the topic of smartphone use problems with the aim of seeing possible connections between four variables, which are smartphone use, emotion regulation, depression, and perceived social support. With this quantitative study conducted through a questionnaire, 113 respondents participated among 90 women, 22 men and one person identified as other with. The age was between 18-74 years. The results show that there is a positive relationship between smartphone use problems, emotion regulation and depression. On the other hand, it shows a negative connection between perceived social support, smartphone use and emotion regulation. It also shows a negative connection between perceived social support and depression. The present study aims to contribute to development through a growing understanding of smartphone use problems. However, there is a continuing need for future studies that can explain the findings of the current study in depth and through causal connections.

Upplevt välmående för studenter vid Luleå tekniska universitet under distansstudier2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During the current covid-19 epidemic, recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Sweden encourage people to limit their social interactions. Students at Luleå University of Technology have started distance learning as a consequence of these limitations. Earlier research suggests that social isolation can be linked to negative effects of your well-being. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine students experience of their own wellbeing, during online courses. The results in this study are based on semi structured interviews with 17 participating students at Lulea University of Technology. This is then transcribed and analyzed thematically. In the current study the students still socialize with a smaller group of close friends but lack the interactions of bigger social contexts. They highlight both pros and cons with controlling time predisposition during their days. The students express concern about the future but exercise and create daily routines to cope. At the time of the current study it seems like the students handle this unique situation fairly well, without negative effects on their wellbeing.

Utrikesfödda kvinnors rätt till arbete: En utvärdering av Luleå Kommuns projekt "Workplace Luleå"2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to research how employees perceive health promoting work in the organization. The data collection chosen for the study was semi structure interviews, ten employees were selected at random. The summary shows that the organization today is perceived to have a good basic health promotion that complies with statutory regulations and guidelines. It has also been established which factors and areas are of importance for promoting health in the organization. Respondents point out that the important areas for promoting health are the social environment, unity, good communication with management, a supportive work environment, control over work, stimulating demands and clarity both in responsibility, roles and changes in the organization. Results show health promotion in general and which areas the respondents perceive need more resources and work. The unity among the respondents varied, but there was some wholeness that could determine certain areas that showed both opportunities and be liabilities for the employees. Respondents are satisfied with health promotion today in general terms but the biggest underlying reason that creates obstacles for employees is rooted in the organization's financial assets. In relationship with the economy, the respondents feel that much has changed about their work situations, which they do not feel completely aware of. In summary, the organization needs to focus on health promotion from an Empowerment point of view, strengthening work relationships through teambuilding, encourage development through education, provide more information during uncertain situations. Also offer counseling support and ultimately increase awareness among employees about their work environment.

Vad styr rekryteringsprocessen?: En kvalitativ studie om vad chefer och rekryterare värderar i en rekryteringsprocess2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Psychotherapy students' experiences of supervisee-centred supervision based on deliberate practice, feedback-informed treatment and self-compassion2023In: Counselling and Psychotherapy Research, ISSN 1473-3145, E-ISSN 1746-1405Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: There are few methods that focus on therapists' experiences of supervision. To facilitate the development of psychologist students, a supervisee-centred supervision, based on deliberate practice, feedback informed treatment and self-compassion, was introduced.

Methods: This study examines six supervisees’ experiences of a supervisee-centred supervision. A semi- structured interview was used for the collection of the data, which identified two main themes: Learning and Development and five associated sub-themes: structure and purposesfulness, prerequisites, experience-based learning, therapeutic skills and personal development.

Conclusion: The experience- and feedback-based approach was perceived as efficient, structured and goal oriented. This created high-focused activity and participation, a strong group dynamic and a good alliance with the supervisors, providing a good climate for learning and development. Focusing on performance and feedback was perceived as a potential obstacle that could create stress and anxiety.

Inre och yttre motivationsfaktorer som påverkar unga arbetstagare2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A presumption for meeting the demands of the labor market for young workers is to have work motivation. Work motivation is a generic label for factors that influence a person's way of acting in different situations and can be divided into internal and external motivation. Internal motivation means a sense of free will where the individual acts on the basis of interest in creating satisfaction in the workplace. External motivation means creating satisfaction through external consequences. The purpose of this study is to study work motivation with focus on internal and external motivational factors among young adults aged 20-25 years based on a qualitative approach. It is also of interest to study if there is any difference between gender. The material was collected through ten semi-structured interviews and analyzed on the basis of a thematic analysis. The result shows that responsibility, skills development and feedback are internal motivational factors that influence young adults' work motivation. The external motivating factors are rewards, social relationships and clear guidelines. There is also no major difference between men and women in terms of work motivation. In addition, the results show that young adults believe that a job in the end should not be regarded as a job, but as a fun activity in order to achieve maximum work motivation.

Never too late? An advantage on tests of auditory attention extends to late bilinguals.2014In: Frontiers in Psychology, E-ISSN 1664-1078, Vol. 5, article id 485Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recent studies, using predominantly visual tasks, indicate that early bilinguals tend to outperform monolinguals on attention tests. It remains less clear whether such advantages extend to those bilinguals who have acquired their second language later in life. We examined this question in 38 monolingual and 60 bilingual university students. The bilingual group was further subdivided into early childhood (ECB), late childhood (LCB), and early adulthood bilinguals (EAB). The assessment consisted of five subtests from the clinically validated Test of Everyday Attention (TEA). Overall, bilinguals outperformed monolinguals on auditory attention tests, but not on visual search tasks. The latter observation suggests that the differences between bilinguals and monolinguals are specific and not due to a generally higher cognitive performance in bilinguals. Within the bilingual group, ECB showed a larger advantage on attention switching, LCB/EAB on selective attention. We conclude that the effects of bilingualism extend into the auditory domain and are not confined to childhood bilinguals, although their scope might be slightly different in early and late bilinguals.

Skilja mellan mänskligt och artificiellt skrivna texter: Experimentell undersökning av universitetslärares bedömningsförmåga samt självskattning gentemot verktyget ChatGPT2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today the possibility exists to write text with chatbots, which is a form of artificial intelligence. One of the prominent chatbots is ChatGPT that has the capability to generate texts as an example. At universities, it is common to have examination tasks where students are required to write texts. It has therefore created the possibility for students to use ChatGPT as a tool which could be considered cheating. This study aims to research how well university teachers possess the capability of distinguishing texts written by students compared to ChatGPT. Furthermore, research about university teachers’ acceptance in the usage of ChatGPT as a tool both for university teachers and students. The method used was a survey that’s part experiment and questions about acceptance. The study had a total of 38 participants between 30-72 years old and the mean age being 49.3. The study consisted of 22 women, 14 men and 2 did not want to specify. Their task was to read and assess three texts. These texts were written by a student or ChatGPT. The results showed that university teachers could not identify if the author was a student or ChatGPT. There was only one text that university teachers could identify a difference between the two texts and distinguish who had written it. Factors according to the participants that seemed to distinguish if the text was written by ChatGPT were that it was well written and the placement of sources. There was no definite attitude towards or against the usage of ChatGPT, neither as a tool for teachers or students. Thus, the perceived usefulness (Performance expectancy, PE) was most important. The overall conclusion of this study was that teachers found it difficult to identify if the text was written by ChatGPT or a student.

Leading Organizational Change Globally: A study of the success factors for effectively driving change in a multicultural and international company2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Organizations face challenges in terms of costs and resistance when dealing with change. Global organizations face additional challenges with change when dealing with differences in national culture. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate organizational change in an international and multicultural environment. The aim was to discover how global companies can effectively drive change by analyzing perspectives, experiences, attitudes and values of change of employees of different nationalities and positions in a global company. Research questions such as: “What factors enable or prevent the implementation of organizational changes?”, “Which are the success factors for leading change in a global organization?”, “What are the challenges when it comes to leading change in a global organization?” and “Is there a difference in perspectives, attitudes, motivation and values towards change?” Were answered in this investigation. Semi-structured informant and respondent interviews as well as quantitative surveys were conducted. Analysis shows that factors affecting organizational change processes were dimensions of change, structure, time, support, change competencies, clarity and justifications for the change. Results showed that concern for human factors and global/ local awareness were success factors when leading change. Challenges identified included the delivery of a complete communication across the organization, adapting change approach to all cultures and an eagerness to create organizational changes. At last, results showed that respondents differed in perspectives, experiences and motivation for change. Statistical analysis proved that these differences were attributed to nationality but also to age and position. Finally, a discussion of results highlights the importance for organizations to understand and solve the dilemma of doing both, managing and leading change.

How Much Do We Orient?: A Systematic Approach to Auditory Distraction2021In: Journal of Experimental Psychology. Learning, Memory and Cognition, ISSN 0278-7393, E-ISSN 1939-1285, Vol. 47, no 7, p. 1054-1066Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Data on orienting and habituation to irrelevant sound can distinguish between task-specific and general accounts of auditory distraction: Distractors either disrupt specific cognitive processes (e.g., Jones, 1993;Salamé & Baddeley, 1982), or remove more general-purpose attentional resources from any attentiondemanding task (e.g., Cowan, 1995). Tested here is the prediction that there is no further auditory distraction effect on immediate serial recall with increments in the number of distractors beyond the“changing-state point” of two discrete distractors. A Bayes factor analysis refutes this nil hypothesis: This prediction, a key element of the strong changing-state hypothesis, is shown to be less likely than two competing alternatives. Quantitative predictions for distraction as a function of the number of distracters are derived for an orienting-response (OR) and a stimulus-mismatch (SMM) hypothesis, representing general and task-specific accounts respectively. The data are shown to be more likely under the SMM hypothesis. Prospects for a parametric account of auditory distraction are considered. © 2021 American Psychological Association

    Abstract [en]

There is a high amount of students that are victims of crime in school. Victimization comes with a variety of different psychological consequences that might affect the victimized student in the long run. This study aims to examine how victimized students experience different types of support and how they want to be supported. To answer the questions, seven semi structured interviews have been conducted with victimized students from different cities in Sweden. The results showed that victimized students wish that support adjusts to the individual and their own needs. They also perceived it to be important to be seen and understood by their surroundings. The school should, according to the students, also create routines around crimes to be able to intercept both victimized students and the perpetrating student.

    Abstract [en]

Today it is considered to be the individual's responsibility to ensure that they are employable, hence a significant focus on the individual perspective on employability. From an individual perspective, employability implies what can be regarded as important characteristics and competencies for the individual to be able to compete and match the changing demands in the labor market. The purpose of this study is to investigate Human Resource Management (HRM) students, alumni, and employers' experiences and thoughts that intend to understand how to become aware of one's employability and ability to influence it. The study examines the participants' experience of the concept of employability, how they imagine that different choices can influence their employability, and how the attitude of HRM students and alumni regarding employability can be influenced in different ways. This is a qualitative study and the result is based on semi-structured interviews, with a selection of students, alumni, and employers, which is analyzed using thematic analysis. The result shows that it will be difficult to influence one's employability without self-awareness, which requires an ability to reflect on one's choices, experiences, characteristics, and competences. It also shows that the individual's experiences and expectations affect the attitude towards the labor market, which means that they may miss out on job opportunities.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine performance in older drivers while using gear selectors, with focus on human errors. The research questions concerned differences in the amount of errorsmade, types of human errors that are related to the use of the devices and also the effect of hidingthe gear selectors and the gear selection patterns. Drivers between the ages of 50 – 75 used sixdifferent gear selectors for cars while they performed tasks in a car simulator. The study had awithin-subjects design where all subjects tested every gear selector. The primary tasks in the testsituation was to execute shifts while the test participants also performed the secondary task, which was the Lane Change Test, in a driving simulator. The results show that traditionalconfigurations of gear selectors, polystable joysticks with the gears in a “J”-layout, causes theleast amount of human errors. Gear selectors with the appearance of a traditional gear selector butwith different and complex functionality, as well as monostable gear selectors, cause a largeramount of human errors.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis includes a qualitative study on adult bullying. The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical and psychological consequences of adult bullying including the use of defense mechanisms. The study also aimed to investigate the victims experiences of the healthcare as they have sought help for the bullying. The results are based on two thematic analyses of five questionnaires with open questions which have been answered by people who have been victims of bullying in adulthood. The themes that emerged were; depression, loss of association, negative impact on the work situation, defense mechanisms and lack of knowledge and resources within healthcare. The results show that bullying affects people exclusively negatively and the most severe consequence of bullying is depression. This is because depression could lead to suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide. There were several experienced flaws within the healthcare on bullying and the most severe was lack of knowledge and resources because people are not taken seriously and they don’t receive enough with help in time. The awareness of bullying has to increase in order to make preventive action against bullying in the workplace and other places where bullying may occur.

Samband mellan depressiva symptom och arbetsminneskapacitet: En kvantitativ studie om depressiva symptoms påverkan på arbetsminne bland medelålders och äldre vuxna2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Mental illness is a problem that is constantly increasing in society, and burnout syndrome is a relevant part of the mental illness that the society is struggling with. Burnout syndrome is the type of mental illness that this study is focused on. The purpose of this study was to examine people's experience regarding the sickening and diagnostic of burnout syndrome, factors that affect the syndrome negatively and positively but also social and personal consequences that can occur. This study presents six qualitative interviews with people who have been sick with burnout syndrome, together with qualitative survey data that was collected previously. The result of the study shows that the subjects experienced a drastic change of everyday life because of the burnout syndrome. A cognitive and physical fatigue was experienced by all studied subjects. The result also shows that both the interview and survey subjects reported negative changes in the self-perception that affected their mental picture of themselves. The result does also report some affecting factors that are both positive and negative, and a big part of these factors differ between the subjects. This suggests that the burnout syndrome is a complex process that is highly affected by personal and individual factors.

Anställningsintervjuer, hur används de i rekryteringsprocesser?: En kvalitativ undersökning2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hur hanterar anställda förändringar i växande organisationer?: En studie av upplevd inverkan av organisationstillväxt enligt tjänstemän2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

What happens with the clerks in a fast-growing corporation? Do they have enough time for their tasks, or is the workload too much to handle when communication and structure cannot match the pace of the organizational change? The risks of organizational change are well known and can be anything from high workload to lacking cooperation between co-workers. The risks can be managed through prepared planning and action from the business management. Organizational changes can lead to work related stress which can come from the demands (workload etcetera) overpowering the control workers feel over their situation. This study has, with interviews and surveys, investigated how clerks have perceived the change in their workload and overall communication that could have come with the organization’s growth. The study shows results such as increased cooperation between coworkers and a lack of time and competence to handle their tasks. The study also provides suggestions on how the organization can resolve the perceived lack of competence. Lastly the study discusses the divided ideas on whether the workload has increased or decreased, what could be the reason for this and how they could sort the uneven workload if that is the case.

Avskärmad: Studenters upplevelser av hur coronapandemin har påverkat deras välmående och studier2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

What's the hype about esports?: A qualitative study about esports consumer motivation2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Esports as a spectator sport has gained a significant audience during the last decade, attractingalmost half a billion viewers worldwide and input from large well-known companies, but thereason as to why people watch esports is still not well studied. Adopting uses and gratificationapproaches - which is an approach that focuses on the audience and view them as activeconsumers, the aim of this qualitative study is to learn about what factors influence peoples’motive to watch esports, as well as how esports is being defined by people and how it isconsumed. Ten people who are interested in esports participated in semi-structured interviews. The result showed that hedonic gratification, social gratification, utilitarian gratification andtechnology gratification all can have impact on the consumption of esports. The respondentsconsider esports as a good way to pass time and to be entertained. They gain socialsatisfaction when interacting with likeminded people. In games, they are able to documentand show their progress, and to present and share information about themselves in relation toesports. Most of the respondents look forward to the future of esports.

Utan data är HR bara en funktion med en åsikt?: En kvalitativ studie om datadriven HR inom offentlig sektor2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Acceptans och Användning av ChatGPT inom Akademisk Utbildning: En kvantitativ studie2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The new tool ChatGPT risks colliding with academic integrity and changing traditional forms of education because the chatbot can write credible essays on command. Therefore, examining the acceptance and use of ChatGPT among undergraduates and graduate students is of great interest in order to understand the future of technology in academic education. The main purpose of this study was to investigate, based on the UTAUT model, students' and doctoral students' attitude, behavioral intention and use related to ChatGPT and chatbots in academic education. The questionnaire was answered by a total of 38 students (29 women, 9 men) and 29 PhD students (14 women, 14 men, 1 preferred not to state) aged between 18-45+. The results showed low frequency of use, little habit and low behavioral intention to use the technology. Factors influencing intention to use were mainly expected benefits of ChatGPT. Influencing factors for Use Behavior were mainly behavioral intention and experience. Both concerns (eg, plagiarism, poorer critical and creative thinking) and positive aspects (eg, inspiration, improved writing) of potential use were addressed. Many PhD students felt that ChatGPT today does not meet the requirements for higher studies. However, the majority predicted that ChatGPT will become an inevitable part of society's digitization and that chatbots will evolve, become more useful and therefore take a greater place in academic education in the future. It is important that universities are aware of ChatGPT usage in order to adapt ways of learning as well as existing regulations regarding cheating.

Avvikande beteende: En kvalitativ studie om kriminalvårdsanställdas inställning till avvikelse, stämpling, stigmatisering och utanförskap2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine the employees’ in the forensic mental health service conceptions about deviant and normal behavior, and also if they can recognize the explanations for deviant behavior in the central theories. Furthermore it is examined how respondents’ perceptions of how the labeling, stigmatization and exclusion that affect people that show deviant behavior can be counteracted.

Eight interviews have been conducted. Theoretical bases in this study are labeling theories, differential association theory, social control theory and techniques of neutralization.

The results are composed of three themes that describe the characteristic features of deviant and normal behavior. These themes are: Majority paves the way for how a behavior is considered, Basic conditions in a human life and Lack of knowledge as an underlying factor in people’s uncertainty.

Results emphasize that the respondents are aware of the concepts of normal behavior that exist in society. These conceptions are a human being’s possession of a job, a home and a family. Legality is another aspect that is considered to be something that normal people do. These conceptions result in how respondents interpret deviant behavior. Deviant behavior occurs when people are not obedient to laws and standards in a society or a group.

Interviewees thought that all theories in this study were a simplification of reality because people that show deviant behavior could hold other things responsible for their actions. The theories could not affect how a person or a society would look at people that show deviant behavior. In real life people have to take responsibility for their own actions.

Deviant behavior may contribute to or be a consequence of stigmatization, labeling and exclusion. These concepts will always exist therefore people have to bear responsibility for their actions themselves.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how bipolar disorder affects a person’s identity. In this qualitative study ten in-depth interviewes were conducted. The interviews were seperated into pieces that were assigned a specific code and a thematic analysis was performed. Four themes were identified: perception of identity, acceptance, parenting and the impact of the illness on life. The majority of the participants stated that the disease is part of their identity, which contradicts previous research. Acceptance is stated to occur in various stages and simplifies life once the disease is well accepted, reasearch supports this finding. Participants described a fear that the disease will affect parenthood or that the disease has already affected parenthood. Several participants stated that the disease has led to failed parenting which, according to previous research, can lead to inferiority complex. The disease is predominantly affecting life negatively and creating disability. Several participants stated that the disease has been an obstacle in their career and according to research this can also have a negative impact on the participants’ perception of their own value. In this study, bipolar disorder is considered to have a strong negative impact on identity. Continued research should focus on “mixed-methods” studies with quantitative correlations between for example type of bipolar disorder and level of disability.

Kontorsarbete hemifrån - Gränsättningens betydelse för välmåendet2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Moving from your home to the office was previously a matter of course in order to be able to perform your duties. Today's digitalisation has made man more or less independent of time and space, which has been a salvation in the crisis situation that the world was hit by with the Corona pandemic. This has meant that social places such as offices have had to close down and instead move in under the same roof where privacy takes place. This has led to the individual himself having to limit his working hours and his private life, which further resulted in the purpose of the study, to investigate how the change between work and private life was handled during the distance work. The study also examines the question of whether the interviewees border work has any significance for well-being? The study uses a qualitative method to get deeper descriptions of ten semi-structured interviews with people who have office jobs and had to switch to teleworking. The majority of the people started a border work by establishing a limited workplace in the home, this was perceived as something positive. It was also positive that the distance work meant that the informants experienced increased flexibility in general. The negative aspect of teleworking has been the social isolation and lack of colleagues. As a result, a golden mean has been formed during the process and a desirable future form of work has emerged; To have a flexible form of work that includes variation of telework and office work in a balance where the interpersonal interactions play an important role. The study cannot conclude that there is a difference between women and men's boundaries and well-being under these working conditions.

Exploring the Hidden Dimensions of Distraction in Adults with Atypical Attention2023Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Inattention and proclivity for distraction are symptoms of adult ADHD that hamper productivity in study and work environments. The topic of this dissertation is mechanisms of distraction and facilitation of attention in ADHD. This thesis includes three studies. The following overarching questions are addressed in each study respectively: (1) Is computerized cognitive training (CCT) an intervention which improves overall cognitive outcomes in adults with ADHD, (2) Are there differences depending on ADHD symptom severity and distraction in auditory or vibro-tactile sensory modalities, and (3) Is background white noise a shield from distraction for those with ADHD during a short-term memory task?

Study I is a systematic review and meta-analysis of CCT interventions for adults with ADHD, following a pre- post-test design for randomized controlled trials. Nine intervention studies are included in the systematic review, with the resulting meta-analysis for overall cognitive outcomes showing a very small benefit of the CCT intervention. Study I also included sub-analyses of three outcome categories according to the Cattell-Horn-Carol framework of cognition: cognitive speed, executive functions, and short-term memory. None of these individual meta-analyses resulted in significant improvements.

Participants took part in a cross-modal visual oddball task with auditory and vibro-tactile distractors in Study II. Forty-five participants were divided into two groups for the analysis: one group with low ADHD symptoms and one group with high ADHD symptoms. Findings did not show a relationship between ADHD symptom status and distraction in either auditory or vibro-tactile modality, despite both groups showing the expected slowed reactions on deviant trials. A sensitivity analysis showed that the high symptom group exhibited 0.5 % more missed trials compared to the low symptom group, possibly due to mind wandering in this non-forced-choice task.

For Study III, serial recall data was collected from sixty-six individuals with ADHD and sixty-six healthy control participants, who were tested with white background noise and no background noise conditions. The results showed that participants with ADHD were more likely to get distracted by auditory omission deviants in continuous background white noise, whereas healthy controls were more likely to get distracted by auditory addition deviants in the condition without background noise. Also, the individuals with ADHD on average did not exhibit a typical primacy effect across serial recall items. Overall, the results of the three studies in this dissertation point to some areas for improvement for adults with ADHD where targeted behavioral interventions might be useful in the future.

Differential Impacts of Addition and Omission Deviants on the Working Memory Performance of Adults with and without Self-reported ADHDManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

To improve work productivity and concentration when undertaking daily tasks, such as studying or engaging in mentally difficult activities, some individuals prefer to work in the presence of background auditory noise such as music, nature sounds, or even white noise. We investigated the impact of background white noise on short-term serial recall performance in adults with (n = 66) and without (n = 66) ADHD whereby variation in other traits that could potentially influence performance (anxiety and depression) was controlled. The potential decline of the impact of task-irrelevant sound across trials (e.g., habituation) and serial position effects were also explored. Participants completed the verbal working memory task in the presence of continuous white noise sequences that were occasionally interrupted by a period of quiet (omission deviant), and continuous quiet sequences that were occasionally interrupted by a period of white noise (addition deviant). Addition deviants were more disruptive for non-ADHD individuals than ADHD individuals, while omission deviants were more disruptive for ADHD individuals than non-ADHD individuals. A direct implication of this interaction is, in order to limit distractions, adults with ADHD should refrain from listening to continuous background white noise if there is a likelihood of a break in sound stimulation, whereas adults without ADHD should avoid quiet auditory backgrounds in which a rare or unexpected sound may occur. Further, exploratory findings show the absence of a serial position primacy effect for adults self-reporting ADHD compared to adults without ADHD.

Effects of Auditory and Tactile Distraction in Adults with Low and High ADHD SymptomsManuscript (preprint) (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) impact distraction by unexpected deviant sounds and vibrations. The hypothesis was that there would be a difference between individuals with low and high ADHD symptom severity in deviance distraction. In a cross-modal oddball task, we measured the impact of to-be-ignored deviating auditory and vibro-tactile stimuli in 45 adults who were 18 years or older, and self-reported ADHD symptoms using the screening tool of the adult ADHD self-report scale (ASRS). Results did not show a difference between groups with low and high symptoms of ADHD in their propensity for distraction in any modality using both frequentist and Bayesian methods of analysis. The impact of the deviating sounds and vibrations on performance were similar between groups. However, the amount of missed trials, which possibly reflects mind wandering or attention away from the focal task, was higher in the high symptom group (0.5 % difference in missing data between groups). The findings indicate a difference in missed responses between groups, despite no differences in the likelihood of distraction being indicated between vibro-tactile and auditory modalities. Overall, the complexity of adult ADHD symptomatology, especially behavioral differences in attentional control is reflected in the results of this study.

Predicting attention shifting abilities from self-reported media multitasking2019In: Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, ISSN 1069-9384, E-ISSN 1531-5320, Vol. 26, no 4, p. 1257-1265Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Media multitasking is an increasingly prominent behavior in affluent societies. However, it still needs to be established if simultaneous use of several modes of media content has an influence on higher cognitive functions, such as divided attention. In this study, attention shifting was the primary focus, since switching between tasks is assumed to be necessary for media multitasking. Two tasks, the number–letter and local–global task, were used as measures of switching ability. The cognitive reflections task was included to control for possible effects of intelligence. Results from linear regression analyses showed that higher levels of media multitasking was related to lower switching costs in the two attention-shifting tasks. These findings replicate previous findings suggesting that heavy media multitaskers perform better on select measures of task switching. We suggest two possible explanations for our results: media multitasking may practice skills needed for switching between tasks, or high media multitaskers are choosing this style of technology use due to a dominating personality trait in this group.

Auditory distraction can be studied online! A direct comparison between in-Person and online experimentation2022In: Journal of Cognitive Psychology, ISSN 2044-5911, E-ISSN 2044-592X, Vol. 34, no 3, p. 307-324Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Referring to the well-replicated finding that the presence of to-be-ignored sound disrupts short-term memory for serially-presented visual items, the irrelevant sound effect (ISE) is an important benchmark finding within cognitive psychology. The ISE has proven useful in evaluating the structure, function and development of short-term memory. This preregistered report focused on a methodological examination of the paradigm typically used to study the ISE and sought to determine whether the ISE can be reliably studied using the increasingly popular method of online testing. Comparing Psychology students tested online, in-person and participants from an online panel, results demonstrated successful reproduction of the key signature effects of auditory distraction (the changing-state effect and the steady-state effect), albeit smaller effects with the online panel. Our results confirmed the viability of online data collection for auditory distraction research and provided important insights for the accumulation and maintenance of high data quality in internet-based experimentation.

Fysisk aktivitets påverkan på exekutiva funktioner hos äldre personer: Relationen mellan subjektivt och objektivt minne i relation till fysisk aktivitet2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how physical activity affects the subjective and objective memory of people aged 65-75, and whether there is any relationship between the perceived subjective memory and the objective memory performance in relation to the amount of physical activity in the participants. The sample consisted of 121 participants aged 65-75. Physical activity was measured with the Saltin-Grimby Physical Activity Level Scale (SGPALS). The subjective memory was measured by the participants having to self-estimate their memory on a scale, as well as responding to how they compared their memory to people their age and whether people around them think they have poor memory. The executive functions inhibition and shifting were measured with the Flanker, Simon, Local Global and Number Letter tasks. The outcome variable was the total amount of correct answers. The results showed a significant relationship between physical activity and self-rated subjective memory, physical activity explained 8.9% of variance. Furthermore, there was no significant correlation between physical activity and objective memory performance. Interventions aimed at increasing the level of physical activity of older individuals may be beneficial in reducing the risk of subjective memory impairment.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate workplace incivility that individuals may experience, witness or practice in office operations and contribute with knowledge about the current sort of workplace incivility behavior in contemporary working life and compare previous research conducted within the subject. The study is based in a quantitative and a thematic analysis where an online survey was distributed via email to four private companies and one trade union in Sweden and two social media platforms through personal posts that were public across the platform. A total of 51 answers were collected from the online survey. The result from this study showed that workplace incivility is a relative common in office operations in Sweden. The group that has the highest risk of being targeted by workplace incivility in office operations are women. The results showed a significant difference between age groups and groups with different professional experience regarding the degree to expose others to rude behavior. The study also found a positive correlation between the frequency of workplace incivility and experienced safety and also pleasantness at the workplace. The most common behavior of workplace incivility in office operations is different forms of exclusion as avoidance behavior, withholding information and not give another coworkers respect. Results showed that the most common way of communicating working climate are by having official scheduled meetings.

Förankring och emotionell priming vid bedömning av bilder2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Blood Pressure Levels and Longitudinal Changes in Relation to Social Network Factors2016In: Psychological Topics, ISSN 1332-0742, Vol. 25, no 1, p. 59-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between social network variables and levels of and longitudinal changes in blood pressure in a middle-aged/older sample. The participants (50-75 years at baseline; n=1097) responded to questions concerning social relationships at baseline and their blood pressure (diastolic, systolic) was measured. Blood pressure levels were reassessed 5, 10, and 15 years later. Latent growth models with responses to questions concerning social relationships as predictors and basic demographic factors (age, sex) as covariates, unexpectedly indicated that a more limited social network (no close friend, few visits, little contact with friends in other ways, not living with someone, and a composite index based on all questions) was associated with significantly lower diastolic blood pressure levels. For systolic blood pressure a similar result was observed for one of the variables (lack of a close friend). In general, these effects diminished over time, as indexed by the positive relationship between several of the social variables and slope. The results were little affected by inclusion of additional covariates (e.g. measures of psychological distress, smoking/alcohol habits, and BMI) suggesting that the origins of this unexpected pattern of findings must probably be sought for in other subjectrelated factors, such as, for example, increased help seeking. Future studies should consider qualitative aspects (e.g. feelings of loneliness, quality of social relationships) in addition to structural aspects to provide a better understanding of these associations.

Ger en aktiv livsstil bättre minne?2011Other (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Social relationships and risk of dementia: a population-based study2015In: International psychogeriatrics, ISSN 1041-6102, E-ISSN 1741-203X, Vol. 27, no 8, p. 1391-1399Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The objective was to examine whether aspects of social relationships in old age are associated with all-cause dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: We studied 1,715 older adults (≥ 65 years) who were dementia-free at baseline over a period of up to 16 years. Data on living status, contact/visit frequency, satisfaction with contact frequency, and having/not having a close friend were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regressions with all-cause dementia or AD as the dependent variable. To control for reverse causality and to identify potential long-term effects, we additionally performed analyses with delayed entry.

Results: We identified 373 incident cases of dementia (207 with AD) during follow-up. The variable visiting/visits from friends was associated with reduced risk of all-cause dementia. Further, a higher value on the relationships index (sum of all variables) was associated with reduced risk of all-cause dementia and AD. However, in analyses with delayed entry, restricted to participants with a survival time of three years or more, none of the social relationship variables was associated with all-cause dementia or AD.

Conclusions: The results indicate that certain aspects of social relationships are associated with incident dementia or AD, but also that these associations may reflect reverse causality. Future studies aimed at identifying other factors of a person's social life that may have the potential to postpone dementia should consider the effects of reverse causality.
