Effects of Self-Stigma Among the People With Schizophrenia2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

People who are diagnosed with schizophrenia experience prejudice and discrimination both in the society and in their own world as a form of internalization which is also called as self-stigma. Although public stigma is occurred by a larger population, self-stigma also plays an important role by having patients suffer numerous negative consequences. In this article, I focused on those negative consequences of self-stigma for people with schizophrenia. Furthermore, I examined how the negative effects of the stigma plays an important role during the treatment process. As a method, I interviewed 10 patients who were diagnosed with schizophrenia based on 10 open-ended questions and analyzed the data afterwards which helped me understand the negative effects of internalized self-stigma on them. The majority of the responses indicated that they were worried to be viewed unfavorably which led them avoid telling their mental illness to others. The results also showed that they have poor quality of life, little to none social interactions and troubles continuing their medical and therapeutic treatments because of their internalized negative thoughts.

Utrikesfödda kvinnors rätt till arbete: En utvärdering av Luleå Kommuns projekt "Workplace Luleå"2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hälsopromotion i offentlig sektor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to research how employees perceive health promoting work in the organization. The data collection chosen for the study was semi structure interviews, ten employees were selected at random. The summary shows that the organization today is perceived to have a good basic health promotion that complies with statutory regulations and guidelines. It has also been established which factors and areas are of importance for promoting health in the organization. Respondents point out that the important areas for promoting health are the social environment, unity, good communication with management, a supportive work environment, control over work, stimulating demands and clarity both in responsibility, roles and changes in the organization. Results show health promotion in general and which areas the respondents perceive need more resources and work. The unity among the respondents varied, but there was some wholeness that could determine certain areas that showed both opportunities and be liabilities for the employees. Respondents are satisfied with health promotion today in general terms but the biggest underlying reason that creates obstacles for employees is rooted in the organization's financial assets. In relationship with the economy, the respondents feel that much has changed about their work situations, which they do not feel completely aware of. In summary, the organization needs to focus on health promotion from an Empowerment point of view, strengthening work relationships through teambuilding, encourage development through education, provide more information during uncertain situations. Also offer counseling support and ultimately increase awareness among employees about their work environment.

Vad styr rekryteringsprocessen?: En kvalitativ studie om vad chefer och rekryterare värderar i en rekryteringsprocess2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Leading Organizational Change Globally: A study of the success factors for effectively driving change in a multicultural and international company2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Organizations face challenges in terms of costs and resistance when dealing with change. Global organizations face additional challenges with change when dealing with differences in national culture. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate organizational change in an international and multicultural environment. The aim was to discover how global companies can effectively drive change by analyzing perspectives, experiences, attitudes and values of change of employees of different nationalities and positions in a global company. Research questions such as: “What factors enable or prevent the implementation of organizational changes?”, “Which are the success factors for leading change in a global organization?”, “What are the challenges when it comes to leading change in a global organization?” and “Is there a difference in perspectives, attitudes, motivation and values towards change?” Were answered in this investigation. Semi-structured informant and respondent interviews as well as quantitative surveys were conducted. Analysis shows that factors affecting organizational change processes were dimensions of change, structure, time, support, change competencies, clarity and justifications for the change. Results showed that concern for human factors and global/ local awareness were success factors when leading change. Challenges identified included the delivery of a complete communication across the organization, adapting change approach to all cultures and an eagerness to create organizational changes. At last, results showed that respondents differed in perspectives, experiences and motivation for change. Statistical analysis proved that these differences were attributed to nationality but also to age and position. Finally, a discussion of results highlights the importance for organizations to understand and solve the dilemma of doing both, managing and leading change.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine performance in older drivers while using gear selectors, with focus on human errors. The research questions concerned differences in the amount of errorsmade, types of human errors that are related to the use of the devices and also the effect of hidingthe gear selectors and the gear selection patterns. Drivers between the ages of 50 – 75 used sixdifferent gear selectors for cars while they performed tasks in a car simulator. The study had awithin-subjects design where all subjects tested every gear selector. The primary tasks in the testsituation was to execute shifts while the test participants also performed the secondary task, which was the Lane Change Test, in a driving simulator. The results show that traditionalconfigurations of gear selectors, polystable joysticks with the gears in a “J”-layout, causes theleast amount of human errors. Gear selectors with the appearance of a traditional gear selector butwith different and complex functionality, as well as monostable gear selectors, cause a largeramount of human errors.

Utredning av vuxenmobbning: Ur ett psykologi-och hälsoperspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis includes a qualitative study on adult bullying. The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical and psychological consequences of adult bullying including the use of defense mechanisms. The study also aimed to investigate the victims experiences of the healthcare as they have sought help for the bullying. The results are based on two thematic analyses of five questionnaires with open questions which have been answered by people who have been victims of bullying in adulthood. The themes that emerged were; depression, loss of association, negative impact on the work situation, defense mechanisms and lack of knowledge and resources within healthcare. The results show that bullying affects people exclusively negatively and the most severe consequence of bullying is depression. This is because depression could lead to suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide. There were several experienced flaws within the healthcare on bullying and the most severe was lack of knowledge and resources because people are not taken seriously and they don’t receive enough with help in time. The awareness of bullying has to increase in order to make preventive action against bullying in the workplace and other places where bullying may occur.

Utan data är HR bara en funktion med en åsikt?: En kvalitativ studie om datadriven HR inom offentlig sektor2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine the employees’ in the forensic mental health service conceptions about deviant and normal behavior, and also if they can recognize the explanations for deviant behavior in the central theories. Furthermore it is examined how respondents’ perceptions of how the labeling, stigmatization and exclusion that affect people that show deviant behavior can be counteracted.

Eight interviews have been conducted. Theoretical bases in this study are labeling theories, differential association theory, social control theory and techniques of neutralization.

The results are composed of three themes that describe the characteristic features of deviant and normal behavior. These themes are: Majority paves the way for how a behavior is considered, Basic conditions in a human life and Lack of knowledge as an underlying factor in people’s uncertainty.

Results emphasize that the respondents are aware of the concepts of normal behavior that exist in society. These conceptions are a human being’s possession of a job, a home and a family. Legality is another aspect that is considered to be something that normal people do. These conceptions result in how respondents interpret deviant behavior. Deviant behavior occurs when people are not obedient to laws and standards in a society or a group.

Interviewees thought that all theories in this study were a simplification of reality because people that show deviant behavior could hold other things responsible for their actions. The theories could not affect how a person or a society would look at people that show deviant behavior. In real life people have to take responsibility for their own actions.

Deviant behavior may contribute to or be a consequence of stigmatization, labeling and exclusion. These concepts will always exist therefore people have to bear responsibility for their actions themselves.

Predicting attention shifting abilities from self-reported media multitasking2019In: Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, ISSN 1069-9384, E-ISSN 1531-5320, Vol. 26, no 4, p. 1257-1265Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Media multitasking is an increasingly prominent behavior in affluent societies. However, it still needs to be established if simultaneous use of several modes of media content has an influence on higher cognitive functions, such as divided attention. In this study, attention shifting was the primary focus, since switching between tasks is assumed to be necessary for media multitasking. Two tasks, the number–letter and local–global task, were used as measures of switching ability. The cognitive reflections task was included to control for possible effects of intelligence. Results from linear regression analyses showed that higher levels of media multitasking was related to lower switching costs in the two attention-shifting tasks. These findings replicate previous findings suggesting that heavy media multitaskers perform better on select measures of task switching. We suggest two possible explanations for our results: media multitasking may practice skills needed for switching between tasks, or high media multitaskers are choosing this style of technology use due to a dominating personality trait in this group.

Förankring och emotionell priming vid bedömning av bilder2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Different Features of Bilingualism in Relation to Executive Functioning2019In: Frontiers in Psychology, ISSN 1664-1078, E-ISSN 1664-1078, Vol. 10, no 269Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The notion that the long-term practice of managing two languages is beneficial for the executive control system is an ongoing debate. Criticism have been raised that studies demonstrating a bilingual advantage often suffer from small sample sizes, and do not control for fluid intelligence as a possible confound. Taking those suggested factors into account, focusing on older bilingual age groups and investigating the potential effects of linguistic distances, this study aimed to improve the interpretations of the bilinguals’ advantages. Measures of inhibition (Flanker, Stroop, Simon task) and switching (Number-letter, Color-Shape, Local-global task) were collected in participants in the ages 50-75 years (n = 193). Despite a large study sample, results did not support any beneficial effects related to improve processing costs in executive functioning. Sub-analyses of the two different language groups (Swedish – Finnish / Swedish – English) intended to investigate the effect of linguistic distances did not change this outcome. Future studies exploring the potential long-term term effects of bilingualism would benefit from identifying tests of cognitive control with greater ecological validity and include other measures of cognitive functioning. Language learning interventions may also be a promising tool for future research.

Reading Habits Among Older Adults in Relation to Level and 15-Year Changes in Verbal Fluency and Episodic Recall2018In: Frontiers in Psychology, ISSN 1664-1078, E-ISSN 1664-1078, Vol. 9, article id 1872Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The main objective of this study was to investigate reading habits in older adults in relation to level and 15-year changes in verbal fluency and episodic recall. We examined a sample of 1157 participants (55 years at baseline) up to 15 years after the baseline assessment using latent growth curve modeling of cognitive measures with baseline reading frequency (books, weekly magazines) as a predictor of cognitive level (intercept) and rate of change (slope). Subgroup analyses were performed to investigate the role of an early adult g factor in the association between reading habits and cognitive ability in midlife. Frequent reading of books, but not of magazines, was associated with higher levels of verbal fluency and recall but unrelated to rate of longitudinal decline. Subgroup analyses indicated that the g factor in early adulthood predicted reading and cognitive level in midlife and this factor removed the current association between reading habits and level of cognitive ability (both cognitive factors). The results indicate an enduring relationship between book reading and level of cognitive ability across the adult life span and provide little support of the hypothesis that frequent reading protects against latelife cognitive decline. The extent to which book reading promotes cognitive functioning in childhood/youth remains to be demonstrated. Intervention studies may be useful in this regard.

Är Instagram orsaken till din låga självkänsla?: En kvantitativ studie för undersökning av korrelation mellan självkänsla och Instagram2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today, social media is becoming more and more common in people's everyday lives. Several studies that have shown that connection to social media has a connection with the person's wellbeing. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is a connection between a person's self-esteem and the use of social media Instagram, but also see how it differed between men and women. Instagram was chosen because it is a newer social media and is very unexplored. The hypothesis before the study was that there is a connection between Instagram and self-esteem, and that women use Instagram more than men. A total of 89 participants answered a questionnaire. Correlation was used to investigate relationships and the result showed that there was no correlation between the use of Instagram and self-esteem. T-tests showed that there are differences between men and women when it comes to using Instagram but when it came to self-esteem the answers did not vary. Continued research could be done in other cultures and different age groups

Imagery rehearsal therapy: Kognitiv beteendeterapi vid posttraumatiska mardrömmar hos veteraner2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mental suffering costs the society amounts of money every year due to sick leave, suicide and general production loss. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the conditions that can affect anyone who has experienced a traumatic event.  This thesis examines the positive experiences and limitations of the treatment form Imagery rehearsal therapy for war veterans’ post-traumatic nightmares. The results show that this treatment reduces post-trauma nightmares both in frequency and in intensity. It also improves the quality of sleep and reduces PTSD- and depression symptoms. However, veterans with multiple traumas as a basis for their PTSD may need more sessions of imagery rehearsal therapy. The results also indicate that the treatment also can show positive results in the reduction of the nightmare frequency and intensity in individuals who suffer from other types of traumatic nightmares than the war veterans had.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is that through qualitative interviews research the #metoo movement’s influence. The research questions involves how the #metoo movement in relation to gender differences and power has affected the subjects of the study to think, feel, and act. The method for the study is that through an inductive approach and qualitative interviews, via strategic selection of ten subjects, find an answer to the objective of the study. The results of the study clearly show that the respondents have a positive attitude of the #MeToo movement, but are shocked about the frequency of sexual violations, which emerged via the media, social media, friends and acquaintances. The study shows the different views between men and women on how they value testimonies. The sexual violations #metoo refer to are by the subjects seen as a matter of a social problem concerning men’s behavior, founded in humanity’s origin. All respondents think that the perpetrators alone are responsible for the assaults, while they deem prevention is everyone’s responsibility. The solution that all respondents unanimously suggested was the introduction of education at an early age in school, about desirable behaviors in interpersonal relationships, and the individual's self-determination over their body.

Begåvningstest med persondator och smarttelefon - finns det skillnader?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The easy access to the Internet, computers and mobile devices brings new technological means of ability testing. The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether there is any difference in the results when an ability test of deductive reasoning is administered with two different platforms, computer and smartphone. In an experiment with within-subjects design the differences between platforms when it came to the level of the test score and usability were investigated. In addition, the test-retest reliability in the ability test was assessed. No significant differences between the scores from the platforms were observed. However, test-retest reliability was low and between r = .372 for smartphone and r = .526 for computer. The low reliability can explain why the score levels with different platforms could not be separated. The usability results indicate that the participants preferred to take the test with a computer, rather than with a smartphone, where even the most experienced users of smartphones disfavor test delivered on smartphone. It is recommended to replicate the experiment with more participants, and also with other handheld platforms, like tablet PC.

‘I saw the man who killed Anna Lindh!’: An archival study of witnesses' offender descriptions2013In: Psychology, Crime and Law, ISSN 1068-316X, E-ISSN 1477-2744, Vol. 19, no 10, p. 921-931Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An archival study was conducted using offender descriptions reported to the police by witnesses (N=29) of the murder of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh in 2003. All descriptions had been collected within a month after the attack, and each witness had been interviewed between one and five times. Description accuracy was established using photographs of the perpetrator, captured by CCTV cameras minutes before the attack. Contrasting previous archival studies, offender descriptions were quite unreliable (42% of reported attributes were incorrect), and this pattern held for both basic features (e.g., height, age) and more detailed attributes (e.g., clothes). The completeness and accuracy of descriptions increased after (vs. before) images of the perpetrator had been published in the media, but only with regard to the perpetrators’ clothes. We acknowledge the potential effects of co-witness influence and post-event information.

Att möta särskilt begåvade elever i skolan: Ur ett lärarperspektiv2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hur avslöjar du lögn?: En kvantitativ studie om stereotyper kring hur man avslöjar lögn2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This contemporary study explores the phenomenon of trust to leaders and empowering leadership in relation to employee voice in a Swedish telecommunication company. By employee voice, it refers to the extent an employee talks about problems/concerns and give feedback/improvements addressed towards the company. Previous study conducted in China has demonstrated that there is a correlation between trust, leadership and employee voice. This study tried to replicate their method and examine the same phenomena. 56 “front-line” employees participated in a survey, but only 50 responses were completed. The result showed significant separate correlation between the independent variables Trust in leaders and three aspects of empowering leadership (Participative decision-making, Coaching, Informing) and the dependent variable Employee voice, after calculating for correlations and carrying through regression analysis. The three aspects of empowering leadership did not mediate the effect of trust to leaders towards employee voice as predicted by previous studies. Only Informing by itself could predict employee voice, but the result could implicate some uncertainty. The implications of these results indicate that leaders should facilitate trust in them and practice empowering leadership to invoke employee voice. Future studies can continue this study by exclude outliers in the calculation and controlling for control variables. Because this is a cross-sectional study, causality could not be determined which could be improved by experimental design in future studies.

    Abstract [en]

Emotional stimuli are argued to capture attention and consume attentional resources differently depending on their emotionalcontent. The present study investigates the impact of the automatic detection of unexpected and to-be-ignored emotional stimuli onhuman behavioral responses, and aims to unravel the differences in distraction between two negative emotional stimuli: sadness and anger.Forty participants (Mage= 25.5 years) performed a visual categorization task where angry and sad emoji faces were presented after eithera standard neutral tone (in 80% of trials) or a deviant emotional sound (tone changing in pitch; sad or angry sound in 10% of trials each)that was to be ignored. Deviant trials were either congruent (e.g., sad sound—sad face) or incongruent (e.g., angry sound—sad face).Although the stimuli presented to the participants were brief and to-be-ignored, results indicate that participants were significantly moredistracted by sad compared to angry stimuli (seen as prolonged response times). Findings are discussed with reference to the nature ofthe two negative emotions.

En granskning av Narrative Exposure Theraphy: En litteraturstudie2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Mental illness among children and adolescents is increasing today. Many suffer from anxiety and depression, and a group that also experiences this is university students, which also confirms previous research (Socialstyrelsen, 2017; Folkhälsomyndigheten, 2018; Storrie et al., 2009). The purpose of this questionnaire study was to investigate the occurrence of mental illness at Luleå University of Technology through a quantitative method. The questions we formulated based on the purpose were whether students at Luleå University of Technology are experiencing mental illness, the underlying causes of the perceived mental illness, and whether there are significant differences between male and female students' perceived mental illness. The results of the study show that 82.4% of the respondents have experienced mental illness during their study period, and those students state that they have mainly experienced stress, anxiety and depression / depression. The underlying causes of mental illness are said to be stress, concern for the future and high demands. The result of our study showed no significant difference between women's and men's perceived mental illness, but it showed a tendency for women to experience mental ill health to a greater extent. Mental ill-health is widespread among university students, stigmatization is still great about the subject and many choose not to seek help. The result also indicates that the Student Health Service and the help they offer may need to be made more visible to reach out to the students. The analysis also shows that there is a connection between how one feels and what control one feels to have in life, poorer attitude showed lower control.

    Abstract [en]

Today, every organization is struggling to attract, recruit and retain staff. This is because it has become a” war of talent”, since it is difficult to recruit candidates with excellence. This means that it is important for employees to work with their brand to succeed. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what nursing students find attractive with employees’ brand and what would make them stay in Norrbotten after their studies, and how this differs from employees work with employer branding. The study was conducted with a qualitative method and an adductive approach. The collected material was interpreted with a thematic analysis and coded with an empirical-driven and theoretical coding. The results of this study showed that organizations work with employer branding, but that they could developed. The results also showed that there are significant factors that students find attractive: work environment, work tasks, development opportunities, good colleagues and a good manager. The salary was an important factor even though it was not the biggest. Which differs from the employee’s biggest factors in their work with employer branding: the locality, development opportunities, work environment, salary, working conditions, working hours, career opportunities and benefits. The result also shows that there are factors that can affect the student’s choice moving after their studies.

Investigating the Non-Gendered Recruitment Characteristics of Mining Firms in Ghana: The Role of Sociocultural, Psychosocial and Organizational Design Factors2016In: Business and Management Quarterly Review, ISSN 2180-2777, Vol. 7, no 3/4, p. 38-51Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the influencing dynamics of psychosocial, cultural and organizational design factors on the non-gendered characteristics of employee recruitment in firms operating in the Ghanaian mining industry that constrains the employability of women. A conceptual framework linking psychosocial, cultural, and organizational design to recruitment processes was developed to guide the study. Quantitative data was collected in four mining firms in Ghana using a questionnaire. The collated data was firstly factor analyzed to establish the predictiveness of the conceptual model components’ indicators. This was followed by an analysis of the conceptual model for “model goodness fit” using the AMOS–based structural equation modeling approach. The results showed that the non-gendered characteristics of employees’ recruitment in mining firms in Ghana, constrains the employability of women, is influenced directly and positively by the firms organizational designs, which is in turn influenced directly by the firms’ psychosocial and sociocultural factors. The study also showed that the non-gendered recruitment characteristic of the firms is influenced indirectly, but positively by the firms’ psychosocial factors, and negatively by other sociocultural factors. By implication, the study provides knowledge that can be used to understand the rationale behind the non-gendered characteristics of employee recruitment in Ghanaian mines and the influencing roles of organizational design factors as well as psychosocial and cultural factors. Mining firms can use this knowledge in developing gendered recruitment policies to enhance future recruitment of all qualified human resource, irrespective of gender.

    Abstract [en]

The societal problem of intimate partner violence is becoming more recognized and can be tackled from several angles, including the workplace. The workplace could help the victims of intimate partner violence by raising the issue during staff appraisal and implementing it as a routine so that these questions are asked to everyone. This survey studies the attitudes of managers at Region Norrbotten towards implementing routines at the workplace in order to be able to reach and help more people exposed to intimate partner violence. The manager's attitude has been investigated through a digital questionnaire sent out to managers at Region Norrbotten. The questionnaire contained both quantitative and qualitative questions. The quantitative questions were obligatory to answer while the qualitative questions were follow-up questions that could be answered if the respondent had anything to add. 82 managers responded, of which 72 women, 9 men and 1 non gender. The result was compiled in Google Docs survey program and the qualitative questions were set up in themes. The study showed that most of the respondents do not see any obstacles to introducing preventive work with the aim of helping employees who may be exposed to intimate partner violence. However, it emerged that today they do not have the required knowledge. They lack routines and training, which may explain that the majority of managers are uncertain about how to proceed if an employee is subjected to violence at home. They also state that they would feel safer to ask questions about the employee's home situation if there were clear routines in place. Almost all managers are positive about participating in an education on intimate partner violence. Since the attitude regarding the introduction of routines among the managers is predominantly positive, conclusions are drawn that there are good opportunities to introduce such work within Region Norrbotten but that support and training for managers in that case need to be developed.

    Abstract [en]

Research of the distractor value of hearing the own name has shown that this self-referring stimulus captures attention in an involuntary fashion and create distraction. The behavioral studies are few and the outcomes are not always clear cut. In this study the distraction by own name compared to a control name was investigated by using a cross-modal oddball task in two experiments. In the first experiment, thirty-nine participants were conducting a computerized categorization task while exposed to, to-be ignored own and matched control names (controlling for familiarity, gender and number of syllables) as unexpected auditory deviant stimulus (12.5% trials for each name category) and a sine wave tone as a standard stimulus (75% of the trials). In the second experiment, another group of thirty-nine participants completed the same task but with the additional deviant stimulus of an irrelevant word added (10% trials for each deviant type and 70% trials with the standard stimulus). Results showed deviant distraction by exposure to both the irrelevant word, own and the control name compared to the standard tone but no differences were found showing that the own name captured attention and distracted the participants more than an irrelevant word or a control name. The results elucidate the role of the own name as a potent auditory distractor and possible limitations with its theoretical significance for general theories of attention are discussed.

Hur bör en bra chef vara?: En studie om önskvärt ledarskapsbeteende inom psykiatriskt stöd och omsorg2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This exploratory study combines two areas of research; emotional intelligence and climate of authenticity. The aim of the study is to investigate whether the leader’s emotional intelligence has an effect of the climate of authenticity in teams with emotional labor. In addition to this the study also aim to explore the level of emotional intelligence of leaders and the climate of authenticity in teams with emotional labor. This is investigated through a quantitative survey among leaders and their teams in health care and the police. The leaders´ were asked to answer a survey about their emotional intelligence and the team were asked to answer a survey about the teams´ climate of authenticity. The result showed a high level of emotional intelligence and climate of authenticity overall. A multiple regression analysis showed that use of emotion was the emotional intelligence dimension with the highest beta value, thereafter comes regulation of emotions, followed by others emotional appraisal and finally self emotional appraisal. Regulation of emotions was the only emotional intelligence dimension with a significant effect on the teams climate of authenticity. No significant relationship between the leaders´ emotional intelligence and the teams climate of authenticity where found, nor between the leaders´ emotional intelligence in each dimension and the climate of authenticity of the team.

Akademisk motivation: Skillnader mellan män och kvinnor i akademisk motivation2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Arbetsrelaterad stress: En studie om hur stress påverkar arbetssituationen för sjuksköterskor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate how stress affects nurses in Luleå Kommun. The questions regarding this issue are;” Does stress affect the quality of the task?” and” How does stress affect the motivation nurses feel at work”. Qualitative data methods have been used. This is evident through the ten semi-structured interviews given to participating nurses employed within Luleå kommun. These interviews were subsequently processed through a thematic method of analysis. This approach is abductive, as the information has been collected and construed via empirical data and theory. The results show that the respondents felt their departments were short-handed. As a result, their work settings were perceived as stressful. Due to this high-stress environment, the respondents also felt that the support from their colleagues was of greater importance than the support from their management team. Due to the lack of staff, the contact between the management team and the employees was scarce. Further analysis of the results found that everyone serving in the hospital had the same basic idea and willingness to help individuals to a healthy life. Conclusively, if the same determination is shown, particularly from management team, to assist in a healthy working climate, through an increase in staff and more direct support given to employees, stress will most certainly be reduced in employees.

    Abstract [en]

Typically, studies of cognitive advantages in bilinguals have been conducted previously by using executive and inhibitory tasks (e.g. Simon task) and applying cross-sectional designs. This study longitudinally investigated bilingual advantages on episodic memory recall, verbal letter and categorical fluency during the trajectory of life. Monolingual and bilingual participants (n=178) between 35-70 years at baseline were drawn from the Betula Prospective Cohort Study of aging, memory, and health. Results showed that bilinguals outperformed monolinguals at the first testing session and across time both in episodic memory recall and in letter fluency. No interaction with age was found indicating that the rate of change across ages was similar for bilinguals and monolinguals. As predicted and in line with studies applying cross-sectional designs, no advantages associated with bilingualism were found in the categorical fluency task. The results are discussed in the light of successful aging.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to study the involuntary capture of attention by spoken words varying in intonation and valence.

BACKGROUND: In studies of verbal alarms, the propensity of alarms to capture attention has been primarily assessed with the use of subjective ratings of their perceived urgency. Past studies suggest that such ratings vary with the alarms' spoken urgency and content.

METHOD: We measured attention capture by spoken words varying in valence (negative vs. neutral) and intonation (urgently vs. nonurgently spoken) through subjective ratings and behavioral measures. The key behavioral measure was the response latency to visual stimuli in the presence of spoken words breaking away from the periodical repetition of a tone.

RESULTS: The results showed that all words captured attention relative to a baseline standard tone but that this effect was partly counteracted by a relative speeding of responses for urgently compared with nonurgently spoken words. Word valence did not affect behavioral performance. Rating data showed that both intonation and valence increased significantly perceived urgency and attention grabbing without any interaction.

CONCLUSION: The data suggest a congruency between subjective ratings and behavioral performance with respect to spoken intonation but not valence.

APPLICATION: This study demonstrates the usefulness and feasibility of objective measures of attention capture to help design efficient alarm systems.

Cross-modal distraction by deviance: functional similarities between the auditory and tactile modalities.2012In: Experimental psychology (Göttingen), ISSN 1618-3169, E-ISSN 2190-5142, Vol. 59, no 6, p. 355-63Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Unexpected task-irrelevant changes in the auditory or visual sensory channels have been shown to capture attention in an ineluctable manner and distract participants away from ongoing auditory or visual categorization tasks. We extend the study of this phenomenon by reporting the first within-participant comparison of deviance distraction in the tactile and auditory modalities. Using vibro-tactile-visual and auditory-visual cross-modal oddball tasks, we found that unexpected changes in the tactile and auditory modalities produced a number of functional similarities: A negative impact of distracter deviance on performance in the ongoing visual task, distraction on the subsequent trial (post-deviance distraction), and a similar decrease - but not the disappearance - of these effects across blocks. Despite these functional similarities, deviance distraction only correlated between the auditory and tactile modalities for the accuracy-based measure of deviance distraction and not for response latencies. Post-deviance distraction showed no correlation between modalities. Overall, the results suggest that behavioral deviance distraction may be underpinned by both modality-specific and multimodal mechanisms, while post-deviance distraction may predominantly relate to modality-specific processes.

The informational constraints of behavioral distraction by unexpected sounds: the role of event information.2012In: Journal of Experimental Psychology. Learning, Memory and Cognition, ISSN 0278-7393, E-ISSN 1939-1285, Vol. 38, no 5, p. 1461-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sounds deviating from an otherwise repeated stream of task-irrelevant auditory stimuli (deviant sounds among standard sounds) are known to capture attention and impact negatively on ongoing behavioral performance (behavioral oddball distraction). Traditional views consider such distraction as the ineluctable consequence of the deviant sounds' low probability of occurrence relative to that of the standard. Contrary to this contention, recent evidence demonstrates that distraction by deviant sounds is not obligatory and occurs only when sounds (standards and deviants), though to be ignored, act as useful warning cues by providing information as to whether and when a target stimulus is to be presented (Parmentier, Elsley, & Ljungberg, 2010). The present study aimed to extend this finding by disentangling the roles of event information (target's probability of occurrence) and temporal information (target's time of occurrence). Comparing performance in a cross-modal oddball task where standard and deviant sounds provided temporal information, event information, both, or none, we found that distraction by deviant sounds emerged when sounds conveyed event information. These results suggest that unexpected changes in a stream of sounds yield behavioral distraction to the extent that standards and deviants carry relevant goal-directed information, specifically, the likelihood of occurrence of an upcoming target.

Polisens arbetssituation: Upplever poliser stress?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Polices working in tough working conditions with high workload and high demands, that can result in various stressconditions. The purpose of this essay were to investtigate polices experiences of stress related factors wich is connected to the demands in work and how this is handled. To get a more deep insight in polices working situation, used a qualitative approach were nine polices was interviewed, from two different municipalities in Sweden. The questions of the essay were how the police’s demands, control and support is. The other was how the demands and stress are handled. The result showed that the polices feel a stress in their work due to the high demands and the shortfall of polices, high workload and the knowledge of maybe need to use weapon. Three-shift shows have an impact on the health at the individuals, because of the irregular times they have during the work. The leaderships have high demands that all the tasks are completed, wich is difficult because of the shortfall of police’s. All have control opportunities by being able to make decisions, while the tasks in work cannot be controlled. Long emergency routes made a stress, were the distance to strengthening is far away. How all handle this factors is firstly with help of colleagues. The peer support is something everyone emphasizes like a big importance, at the same time they wished a bigger support from the leadership in more difficult events. One conclusion of this is that the police authority has shown deficiencies in preventing these cause factors wich the informants highlighted.

Ett ledarskap i förändring: En kvalitativ studie av förändringsarbetet med ledarskap inom Polismyndigheten Region Nord2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate the changing process that the Police authority in Region Nord has carried out and examine how the employees experienced the leadership, and if they have experienced any changes in leadership since the process started. The study also aims to evaluate what employees describe as sources of motivation and how leaders can influence an individual's motivation. The study was conducted through qualitative interviews which were analyzed. The result shows that both managers and employees considered that there has been a change in the way leaders within the police are in their leadership, but that it is a long way to go from a more authoritarian leadership to a trust-based and co-operative way of leading. The results of the study show that managers within the police think that motivation among employees is created by the manager confirming and creating opportunities for development for the employee. This was consistent with what the employees described as motivational factors in their work. Finally, the results show that the employees had no knowledge of the management philosophy, and that the managers had different opinions on the philosophy.

Spatial Change In Multisensory Distractors Impact On Spatial and Verbal Short-Term Memory Performance2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Unexpected changes (known as deviant sounds) in a repetitive stream ofstandardsounds are known to prolong responses in visual categorization tasks (Parmentier, 2014) and disrupt short-term memory (Hughes, Vachon, & Jones, 2005; 2007). While this deviation effect, has been studied extensively, unexpected changes in multisensory irrelevant stimuli have yet to be explored. A further issue is whether a spatial change in either tactile, auditory, or in both modalities simultaneously, affects verbal and spatial short-term memorysimilarly. We explored how spatial and verbal memory performance were affected by a spatial change unexpectedly presented in a multisensory stream consisting of task-irrelevant vibrations and sounds. The sounds were presented from headphones and the vibrations from coin-like vibrating motors strapped to the upper arms of the participants. In the majority of trials (approximately 80%) the multisensory stream was presented on one side of the body whereas on deviant trials the irrelevant stimuli changed to the other side of the body. Preliminarily results suggest that a spatial change in a multisensory stream of irrelevant stimuli affects short-term memory performance both the spatial and verbal domains similarly. We conclude by discussing the results in the framework of multisensory views of short-term memory and attention (e.g., Cowan's, 1988; 1995) and the predictive coding framework (e.g., Talsma, 2015)

Investigating Deviance Distraction and the Impact of the Modality of the To-Be-Ignored Stimuli2018In: Experimental psychology (Göttingen), ISSN 1618-3169, E-ISSN 2190-5142, Vol. 65, no 2, p. 61-70Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract: It has been suggested that deviance distraction is caused by unexpected sensory events in the to-be-ignored stimuli violating thecognitive system’s predictions of incoming stimuli. The majority of research has used methods where the to-be-ignored expected (standards)and the unexpected (deviants) stimuli are presented within the same modality. Less is known about the behavioral impact of deviancedistraction when the to-be-ignored stimuli are presented in different modalities (e.g., standard and deviants presented in different modalities). In three experiments using cross-modal oddball tasks with mixed-modality to-be-ignored stimuli, we examined the distractive role ofunexpected auditory deviants presented in a continuous stream of expected standard vibrations. The results showed that deviance distractionseems to be dependent upon the to-be-ignored stimuli being presented within the same modality, and that the simplest omission ofsomething expected; in this case, a standard vibration may be enough to capture attention and distract performance.
