"Oj, jag måste fixa maten!": En kvalitativ studie om gränsdragning mellan arbetsliv och privatliv vid distansarbete2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Strategies and Actions in Swedish Mining Resistance: Mapping Anti-Extraction Movements and Exploring How Their Interpretations of Socio-Political Context Shape Mobilization Against Mining Projects2024Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Across the world, the demand for minerals is steadily increasing. In Europe, the push for mining coincides with rising public mobilization against extraction projects, and mining-related conflicts will likely be a feature of Europe’s foreseeable future. To understand the trajectories of mining conflicts, and to find just ways of handling them, it is important to understand the strategies and actions of the networks of actors that oppose extraction projects, that is, anti-extraction movements.

While previous research has primarily explored mining resistance in the Global South, our knowledge about mining resistance in Europe is lacking. I contribute to filling this gap by investigating anti-extraction movements in Sweden, a long-term producer of minerals. The aim of the thesis is thus to explore what strategies and actions anti-extraction movements in Sweden use and how and why they choose them. I use social movement theory and emphasize how choices of strategies and actions are shaped by the socio-political context in which movements are embedded. With the help of frame analysis and an interpretive research approach, I explore how movement actors’ interpretations of contextual opportunities and constraints shape their actions, thus contributing to the ongoing research debate about how surrounding societal actors and institutions influence movement agency.

In four papers, building on an extensive document analysis and interviews with movement actors, I systematically map and analyse anti-extraction movements in Sweden and provide in-depth studies of selected cases. I ask two research questions: 1. What anti-extraction movements are there in Sweden, in what socio-political contexts are they embedded, and what actions have they taken? 2. How do anti-extraction movements’ goals and interpretations of contextual opportunities and constraints shape their strategies and actions?

The thesis presents the first comprehensive mapping of anti-extraction movements in Sweden and shows that mining resistance has increased across Sweden during the last two decades. My results reveal that movements use a wide range of actions, from civil disobedience and public demonstrations to litigation and political lobbying, and are composed of heterogeneous mixes of actors, including newly formed activist networks, organizations for farmers and Indigenous Sámi, and environmental organizations. Movements promote several visions for societal development, including environmental protection and sustainability, Sámi Indigenous rights and culture, and landowners’ rights and agriculture. In international comparison, the Swedish anti-extraction movements to a larger extent aim to influence political and legal actors and place less emphasis on project owners and corporate investors.

Regarding how socio-political context shapes strategies and actions, my results indicate that movement actors’ interpretations of contextual opportunities do not always align with researchers’ understandings of what an opportunity is, thus producing unexpected actions. Movement actors’ interpretations of opportunities and constraints are found to be influenced by their goals, their comparisons of available options, their previous experiences, and their role in relation to other actors in the movement.

My research shows that socio-political context often influences movement actors’ strategies and actions via their interpretations of opportunities and constraints for achieving goals. My results also suggest that socio-political context shapes movement actors’ strategies and actions by presenting them with appropriate ways to act in society. Lastly, my studies indicate that additional factors, including movement actors’ action traditions and identities, resources, and the diffusion of strategies, can influence movement actors’ interpretations of contextual opportunities and strategies and actions.

Understanding Diversification of Strategies and Actions in Swedish Mining Resistance – The Fanning-Out Effect of Goals and Contextual OpportunitiesManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Europe is witnessing increasing protests against mining. Social movements mobilizing against mining, (i.e. anti-extraction movements) are typically heterogeneous actor networks using diverse actions to stop projects and promote alternative visions for societal development. I investigate two prominent anti-extraction movements in Sweden and explore how movement actors’ goals and interpretations of contextual opportunities shape their strategies and actions. I study actions over eleven years and use frame analysis to explore actors’ goals, interpretations, and strategies. Results show how diverse goals lead to action diversification in movements by prompting actors to relate to different policy areas, that is, issue-specific contexts. Actors’ previous experiences, informing retrospective reasoning, increased variation in their opportunity assessments. The study contributes to social movement theory by explicating how the content of goals shape strategies and actions, adding to such alternative explanations as traditions, diffusion, and resources. Understanding action diversification is important for handling increasing mining conflicts.

Division of Labour in Swedish Mining Resistance: The Interplay between Legal Mobilization and Public Protests in Social MovementsManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

More knowledge is needed about how the design and implementation of legal processes shape the strategies and actions of social movements. We explore how movement actors’ interpretations of opportunities and constraints within legal processes shape their choices of strategies and actions. We particularly investigate how actors’ interpretations relate to their access to legal processes (i.e. legal standing) and to their understanding of opportunities in alternative action arenas in society, such as policy-making processes and street protests. We investigate an anti-extraction movement and its mobilization against a mining project in northern Sweden over eleven years. Using social movement theory and frame analysis, we explore the interpretations, strategies, and actions of movement actors who have or lack legal standing within the project’s permit process (i.e. legal insiders or outsiders). Key results indicate that action choices are shaped by how movement actors understand their opportunities in different societal arenas and by their traditions and interpretations of appropriate roles amongst other actors in the movement. To understand how legal standing shapes actions, we must acknowledge that actions are shaped by both a logic of consequences and a logic of appropriateness. Results also indicate that insiders’ legal engagement did not diminish outsiders’ use of public protests. On the contrary, outsiders’ motivation to use protests increased via a division of labour emerging in the movement, with actors specializing into either legal mobilization or protests. Integration of some movement actors into legal processes may not lead to a phasing out of protests in the growing resistance against mining in Europe.

Att bli en i gänget: En kvalitativ studie av nyanställdas upplevelser av sin arbetsintroduktion inom en kommunal förvaltning i Norrbotten2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to investigate new employees' experiences onboarding a new hire. The study was conducted on a municipality in the northern part of Sweden where a growth in business is underway, which increases the demand for labor. This increases competition between employers, why personnel strategy work needs to be developed in organizations to attract and retain staff. Through a qualitative method, empiricism has been collected through seven semi-structuredinterviews with new employees. The analytic tools used of this study are Malin Lindelöw's (2016) theoretical model for onboarding and Karasek & Theorell's job strain model (1990). The empirical results show different experiences regarding their onboarding process.Employees who have had a positive experience felt that they were welcomed and valued by their employer. Having a structured agenda for their introduction and being able to influence it according to their needs gave them a sense of self-control and helped them socialize into the organization and community in the workplace. The interviewees who were less satisfied with the introduction experienced failing support from the manager through lack of attention, inadequate dialogue and a lack of agenda for the introduction. If the new employees had not received support to be socialized into the community, it would have happened anyway, but it would have gone more smoothly with the support of the organization in the process. The resultshowed the demands that a new job entails always need to be balanced with good social support, whether the new employee is experienced or not.

Kommunikation eller resultat: En kvalitativ studie om synen på kvinnligt och manligt ledarskap inom verkstadsindustrin2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the debate regarding equality on the labor market, the opportunity to reach managing positions is often brought to the table, only 32 % of managing positions in the private sector are occupied by women. A company’s development is greatly affected by the organizational culture which is built upon people’s perceptions and collective norms. Through this, an interest aroused to study the view on female and male leadership within the manufacturing industry. The purpose of this study was to create an understanding regarding the view of female and male leadership from an employee perspective and to study the possible impact of organizational culture on the view of leadership. To answer the purpose for the study and the three connected research questions, six qualitative semi-structured interviews was conducted with actors within the selected manufacturing industry. The theoretical section presents relevant sociological definitions and theories connected to the area of focus, additionally, previous research consisting of scientific journals are presented.

Results shows that the view on female leadership in the selected manufacturing industry are based on stereotype perceptions where female leaders have better communicative and coaching abilities. The view on male leadership in the selected manufacturing industry is also based on stereotype perceptions, that male leaders is expected to be ”tougher”, direct, and result oriented. Among white-collar employees outside the production, the difference in view of female and male leadership styles seems to fade. This may be the result of a higher female representation in managing positions among the white-collar employees.

Results show that the culture at the selected manufacturing company seems to affect leaders to operate towards male leadership styles due to the male-dominated industry. This affects the view on female and male leadership styles. Furthermore, the view and perception towards female and male leadership seems to be changing, due to that the traditional industrial culture is challenged by the new inclusive culture. The study’s results show the importance of challenging norms and dispute structures.

#kroppskamp: En netnografisk undersökning om kroppsaktivisters budskap på Instagram2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the studies was to create a deeper understanding of young women's experiences of security in the center of Luleå. The study will touch on the young women's experiences in the city. To answer the purpose and the questions of the study, seven semi-structured interviews was conducted. The interviews contributed to a deeper understanding of young women's experiences in the city. With the help of Short (2014) who writes about the impact of the city on the individual, Beck (2012) and his theory of the risk society, Askheim & Starrin, (2007) and their theoretical concept of "empowerment" and Giddens (1997) and his theoretical concept of ontological security, the essay has been given its theoretical framework. Previous research on the subject also helps to highlight the vulnerable situations that women find themselves in the city. The results of the study showed that the young women most often experienced insecurity in the center of Luleå during nights and evenings. The results also suggested that the women adapted their movement pattern during the evening in the center of Luleå and that the women used different strategies as precautionary measures when they felt unsafe in the city. These strategies included having company with you late at night, talking on the phone, keeping their keys between their fingers, and paying extra attention to the surroundings around them. These strategies fostered their experience of insecurity and helped them cope with it. Furthermore, measures for a safer Luleå center could also be identified. The interviewees particularly highlighted that lighting and surveillance can help them feel safer in the city at night and evening. The young women felt that there was a level of uncertainty in the center of Luleå, but that it could occasionally be managed and improved.

Diving into the uncertainties of open innovation: A systematic review of risks to uncover pertinent typologies and unexplored horizons2023In: Technovation, ISSN 0166-4972, E-ISSN 1879-2383, Vol. 119, article id 102582Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The open innovation paradigm has created substantial new opportunities for firms in various sectors. However, scholars have long expressed concern that open innovation also entails a dark side, which can result in value co-destruction. This concern highlights the importance of devoting attention to the perils of pursuing open innovation. Existing scholarship has given due credence to these perils by examining various associated risks and uncertainties. We observe that the extant literature is siloed and unorganized, which impedes future research. Positing that an endeavor to organize existing studies may enhance the pace of research in the area, we attempt to address this gap by reviewing the relevant literature. We thus utilize the systematic literature review approach to identify, synthesize, and critically analyze 80 related research articles. Based on this analysis, we present the bibliometric profile of the extant research and a typology of five risks in open innovation: data-related risks, people-related risks, firm-level risks, outcome risks, and other risks. In addition, we discuss a specific risk management approach for each of the identified risks. Beyond providing a lucid narrative of the extant literature, we also identify unexplored avenues and offer an overarching framework to conceptualize future research potential in the area. From a practical perspective, managers can utilize this framework as a risk assessment tool when engaging in open innovation. In sum, this review—one of the first of its kind—offers a valuable consolidation of the state of the art of open innovation risk research, which can meaningfully advance theory and practice in the area.

Mänskliga kvarlevor, återlämning och försoning: En sociologisk studie om upprättelse2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Vaccine resistance is a phenomenon that has grown larger worldwide around such an amount that the World Health Organization has included vaccine hesitancy in the list of "ten threats to global health". With the rise of the Corona Pandemic, skepticism about vaccines has once again taken hold when vaccines were to be manufactured to prevent the illness Covid-19. According to previous research, social media is an enabling factor for growing skepticism about vaccines and is therefore an important environment to study. The phenomenon of vaccine resistance is an explored area in several countries, but can be considered relatively unexplored in a Swedish context. The purpose of the study is thus to investigate vaccine resistance in a Swedish context by studying the ideas and perceptions portrayed in vaccine-critical forums on social media. The method that forms the basis for the study is discourse analysis, which means that the focus in the material collected is language and communication. This enables the exploration of notions and perceptions of vaccines. The study material is collected from the social media platforms Facebook and Flashback and then analyzed on the basis of theoretical concepts such as risk, trust and expert systems as well as individualism, which is based on the theorists Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens and Zygmunt Bauman.

The results show that users show a lack of trust in the government and authorities due to the management of the current pandemic, as well as previous management of vaccine side effects of the swine flu vaccine. This also included the notion that vaccine research is corrupt due to the financial interests of pharmaceutical companies and authorities, which affected users' confidence in vaccines in general, but also in the new covid vaccines. The users who showed this lack of trust in authorities and other experts experienced the pandemic restrictions, upcoming vaccine passes and fact-checking on the platforms as violating. The perceived violating restrictions from above together with fear of possible vaccine side effects resulted in users preferring to turn their trust in online environments and alternative experts, instead of expert systems such as healthcare, which due to negative experiences with experts also results in trust being directed elsewhere. . Those who perceived vaccines as harmful advocate alternatives to vaccines, where users could turn to the platforms for consultation and support. The views expressed also differed between the platforms, where Facebook showed tendencies towards selective exposure, while on Flashback there could be discussions from different points of views.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate sensemaking among employees within large service companies regarding sustainable development. To fulfill the purpose and address the research questions, the study has been conducted through six semi-structured interviews with employees from three major service companies. The collected data has been coded and thematically analyzed using a thematic analysis method, guided by the theoretical framework consisting of new institutional theory (DiMaggio & Powell, 1983; Meyer & Rowan, 1977) and Karl Weick's (1995) sensemaking.

The findings of the study indicate that the sensemaking process is a significant element in the interviewees' daily work towards achieving sustainability goals. Through an ongoing process of interpretation, employees create meaning for why and how they should work towards sustainable development.

Furthermore, the results reveal that the primary motive behind organizing for sustainable development is a pursuit of a leading position within the organizational field and credibility within the institutional environment. The organizations and employees align with societal developments and attempt to adapt to prevailing institutional requirements and norms, which strongly influence their sensemaking. Societal developments and the institutional environment also have a strong impact on which dimension of sustainability is most prominent and dominant.

In conclusion, the results demonstrate that employees' sensemaking plays a central role in the organizations' organizing for sustainable development. The sensemaking process is not an independent factor that solely contributes to organizing, but it is greatly influenced by the institutional environment surrounding the organizational field.

    Abstract [en]

In 2020, restrictions were introduced in Sweden when the Covid-19pandemic spread across the world, teleworking was a measure that was introduced to reduce the spread of infection.  This brought about a major shift for many workers as they began to perform their work remotely from home. The purpose of the study is to create a deeper understanding of experiences of social interaction between colleagues during remote work as a result of COVID-19.  In order to fulfill the purpose of the study, a qualitative study with seven semi-structured interviews has been conducted. The collected material has then been analyzed using thematic analysis where patterns and repetitions have been sought. Through an abductive approach, an interaction between empirical and theory has then taken place throughout the course of the study, where the theoretical framework consisting of Randall Collins (2004) interaction rituals and Erving Goffman's (2009) dramaturgical perspectives has been applied to gain a deeper understanding of the result.

The results of the study show that the experience of telework is individual where office workers experience both positive and negative effects of telework. When it comes to positive experiences, experiences of higher efficiency emerge as employees become less disturbed when they work from home. The negative effects of telework that have emerged mainly concern the social interaction as office workers do not meet their colleagues daily in the workplace, which has had a negative impact on cooperation and social relations between colleagues. When teleworking has taken place for a long time, it is described that there is an impact on the job satisfaction, creativity and well-being of employees. The office workers point out a lack of not meeting their colleagues where the natural meetings in the premises of the work are highlighted as important. Furthermore, the relevance of the video function to social interaction emerges when it is emphasized that the function strengthens digital interactions. Furthermore, it is considered that difficulties can arise if the employees do not see each other at meetings as body language is important for good cooperation and social interaction. Teleworking has also led to a perceived loneliness as physical meetings have not been available, and workers need to perform their work remotely from home. Despite this, office workers describe that working remotely is something they are in favor of continuing with a few days a week.
