    Abstract [en]

    The effects of slurry concentration, filtration pressure and particle size distribution on the resistance of a filter cake are studied, and an attempt is made to examine the filtration process with reference to the structure of the filter cake. Micrographic analysis clearly demonstrates the effect of particles segregation on filtration rate. The resistance of the cake rises with increasing solids concentration of the slurry, mainly due to a lower degree of particle segregation.

    Abstract [en]

    Direct measurement of the porosity variation in filter cakes by image analysis has been tested on chalcopyrite and magnetite slurries. It was found to give more accurate results than previous indirect methods, especially at the surface of the cake. Microscopy and image analysis visualize the effect of particle size, particle segregation and air bubbles on cake porosity. In a filter cake formed under constant pressure, the maximum porosity is shown to occur in regions inside the cake, rather than on the surface.

    Abstract [en]

    Two methods for the consolidation of filter cakes are developed; one of them is based on acrylate plastic as an impregnating medium, and the other uses epoxy resin and is suitable for sulfide-carrying materials, where the first one fails. Even cakes formed from fine particles ( less than 38 mu m) can be consolidated using these methods. Specimens prepared with acrylate offer no difficulties in grinding and polishing; those prepared with epoxy resin, however, call for procedures with bonded grinding media, and the sections are preferably examined under a scanning electron microscope. Direct comparison between the consolidation methods has not been made. Porosity and pore size distribution are measured in filter cakes formed from two different materials using a computerized image analyzer.

    Abstract [en]

    Vibration signal measurements were performed on a commercial scale grinding process operated at LKAB. Three channels of mechanical vibration signals from the axial, horizontal and vertical directions, and one channel of acoustic signal at the centre of the abrasion zone outside the ball mill shell, were picked up, digitised and processed using a personal computer. The feed rate, power draw, pulp temperature were recorded automatically by the process control system while material samples of mill feed and product were taken for determination of particle size distribution and pulp density during signal acquisition. The particle size distributions, time-domain waveforms and power spectra were illustrated and discussed. By multivariate data analysis, close relationships were established between grinding parameters and the pattern of vibration signals. The results show that vibration signal analysis could be used to monitor grinding parameters for industrial scale ball mills.

    Abstract [en]

    n this paper, the performance of the world's largest ball mill, of dimensions Φ 6.5 × 9.65m length, at Kirkenes concentrator of A/S Sydvaranger, Norway, is analyzed on the basis of Bond's theory. The data obtained reveal that the mill functioning is efficient from the standpoint of energy consumption under operating conditions. However, a comparison with the estimated performance according to Bond's theory shows that it has a lower capacity and coarser product. The problems of using Bond's method for the scale-up of the large ball mill are discussed.

    There has been a growing need in recent years to develop a more energy efficient grinding process. Fine grinding experiments have been conducted with a stirred ball mill (SAM-Sala Agitated Mill). The stirring is achieved by the rotation of a single vertical rotor equipped with protruding pins, which are made of solid tungsten carbide. Grinding media size (cylpebs), pulp density, rotor speed, media level and energy input have been identified as the most important parameters affecting fine grinding. The present paper discusses the influence of these parameters on fine grinding of a magnetite ore. The results show that for a given set of conditions (pulp density, energy input and rotor speed) qq 3mm balls are approximately 30% more efficient than 8mm qq cylpebs. There exists a particular combination of pulp density, grinding media level and rotor speed which optimises the grinding performance. Comparison of the stirred ball mill has been made with a conventional ball mill at the same energy input per ton of material and at three pulp densities. The comparison was made at optimum performance of both mills. 30-40% better fine grinding performance were obtained with the stirred ball mill.

    In this paper, the High Pressure Roller Mill has been used as a pre-crusher or pre-grinder for the treatment of a filter cake limestone material. The different comminution systems with or without the High Pressure Roller Mill have been investigated. Experimental results indicated that pretreatment of the material favors the subsequent wet ultrafine grinding for energy efficiency and throughput. The fineness of the ground product is significantly influenced by various pass numbers of pre-grinding with the High Pressure Roller Mill. The formation of the micro-cracks in the particles under the compressive loads was also discussed in order to elucidate the role of the High Pressure Roller Mill as a pre-grinder before the attrition mill.
