his article reports on a questionnaire study conducted among Swedish teenagers aged 17-18. The study aims to map out their use of fictional texts through various media forms in the two contexts school and recreational time. The study, which has a quantitative approach, focuses on mediation, gender, and study orientation, when exploring the media habits of Swedish teenagers. The results show that although the participants read fiction, they spend much more time using fictional texts in other media forms, such as computer games, TV-series, and films. Gender differences are visible in that men play computer games and women read literature to a greater extent. There are few prominent differences concerning the choice of educational programme. Instead, the results show that divergence should be considered on an individual level, and that large differences in media use can occur within the same school class. The results are discussed from a media ecological as well as a mediatization perspective, and in relation to an educational context.
This study presents and analyses a reading project in K–3 classes (6–9-year-olds) at two schools. The project combined the teaching of reading strategies with reading fiction and book talks prepared at the schools and then practiced at home. The book selection included easy-to-read books for children, 6-year-olds, and books for the intermediate readers. The pupils were to read at home, with or for family members, talk about the books and practice the reading comprehension strategies making predictions and summarising. Data from the six-week project were collected through weekly surveys submitted by the families, and, after the completion of the project, by focus group interviews with the pupils. According to the participants, the focus on reading contributed to the development of the pupils’ reading skills and selecting suitable books and having book talks were key factors to engage the pupils. The project highlighted the awareness of the school’s compensatory duties towards pupils needing support.
This article draws on an educational design research project in which researchers and teachers have designed and implemented contextualized grammar teaching. The opportunities for working with upper secondary students’ metalinguistic understanding provided by the design elements inductive tasks, discussion, visualization, and integration are analyzed. The data comprises focus group discussions with the participating teachers, student questionnaires and observation notes by the researcher. A qualitative content analysis shows that inductive tasks can be beneficial for discussing form and function but at the same time, the approach challenges the role of the teachers as transmitters of knowledge. Visualizing structures using colors function as a metalanguage when students developed metalinguistic understanding. Finally, the result shows that integrating grammar into other content areas within the L1 subject can create a holistic perspective on language and the L1 subject.
