    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    In Sweden, gender mainstreaming policies have a long political history. As part of the national gender equality strategy of the Swedish forest industry, the ten largest forestry companies committed themselves to gender mainstream their policies. Limiting the impact of policies and the agency of change, the purpose of this paper is to focus on the varied and conflicting meanings and constitution of the concepts, the problem and, in extent, the organisational realities of gender mainstreaming.

    Design/methodology/approach

    In both, implementation and practice, gender mainstreaming posse challenges on various levels and by analysing these documents as practical texts from the WPR-approach. This paper explores constructions of gender and gender equality and their implications on the practice and the political of gender mainstreaming in a male-dominated primary industry.

    Findings

    The results show that the organisations themselves were not constituted as the subject of the policy but instead some of the individuals (women). The subject position of women represented in company policy was one of lacking skills and competences and in the need of help. Not only men and the masculine norms but organisational processes and structures were also generally invisible in the material. Power and conflict were mainly absent from the understanding of gender equality. Instead, consenting ideas of gender equality were the focus. Such conceptualisations of gender equality are beneficial for all risk concealing power structures and thereby limit the political space for change.

    Originality/value

    By highlighting the scale of policy and the significance of organisational contexts, the results indicate how gender and gender equality are constitutive through the governing technologies of neoliberal and market-oriented ideologies in policy – emphasising the further limiting of space for structural change and politicalization within the male-dominated organisations of Swedish forest industry.

    Abstract [en]

    Annually, more than ten million people in all age groups in the world experience an acquired brain injury (‘ABI’), which is a brain injury caused after birth by external forces (e.g. motor vehicle accidents) or certain internal factors (e.g. stroke). Brain injury survivors are often left with long-term impairments in cognitive, social, or emotional functioning. Despite a promising outset, research on the effectiveness of philosophical dialogues as an educational method for persons with ABI to increase their cognitive, social, and emotional functioning has, to our knowledge, been virtually non-existent. The present research project targets this and uses a pretest-posttest and mixed-method triangulation design and attempts to measure effects of two small-scale interventions carried out in the northern part of Sweden. In this text, the project’s research design, data production, and data processing are described.

    Abstract [en]

    The mining industry safety production situation is becoming more and more severe in China with safety accidents occurring frequently, which is closely related to insufficient safety investments and unreasonable distribution. Additionally, it does not keep in line with the main purpose of occupation health and safety management system (OHSAS18001).In order to carry on the reasonable scientific disposition to the safety investments of the mining industry, increase safety investments efficiency and satisfy the requirements of OHSAS18001, data envelopment analysis (DEA) is adopted to calculate the safety investments, loss and output. Firstly, the analysis software MYDEA of DEA is used to calculate the results to obtain the evaluation result of safety benefits. Secondly, the target value of the improvement work in the aspect of investment is achieved by method of projection analysis when the decision making unit (DMUj0) of non DEA efficiency is changed into DEA efficiency. Lastly, it can be obtained on the basis of grey relational analysis (GM) that the investment amount of safety management and training of employees has the highest relation on the effective safety benefits of the mining industry. Thus, the investment of safety management and training of employees should be strengthened. This kind of empirical method of comprehensive model provides a direction and theoretical reference for safety investments benefits analysis and optimized investment structure, and a structure for the effective operation of mining industry occupational health and safety management system

    Abstract [en]

    In order to effectively evaluate the relationship between safety investments and accident impact losses in the mining occupational health and safety management system, a grey relational analysis model is established. Firstly, 4 firstgrade indicators including safety technical measures fee etc. and 23 second- grade ones including ventilation system etc. are established. Secondly, by calculating the grey relational analysis between the variables of the data sequence and the system characteristic variables, analysis results of advantages and the evaluation ones are obtained. Finally, the model is validated by case study. The results demonstrate that the investments of safety technical measures and safety management and training have a great impact on the accident losses. The quantitative analysis of safety investments and losses is realized by the model, which provides the direction for the enterprise's strategic investments and reduces the economic losses.

    Abstract [en]

    Cleaner production assessment is a measure of the state and level of cleaner production, also a necessary method of promoting cleaner production in enterprises. For the purpose of the improvement of cleaner production of enterprises, improved Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model and grey relational analysis (GRA) are used to assess the same nature of the three enterprises of one group with seven quantitative indicators concordant with the Cleaner Production Report. The results are consistent with the clean production reports from three enterprises, which show that the integrated methods are feasible and objective, and can be used as a tool for internal cleaner production assessment.

    Studien belyser hur gymnasielärare retrospektivt uppfattar att de förberetts för sitt yrke under lärarutbildningen. Enkätsvar från 1554 gymnasielärare kategoriserades efter den tidsperiod då de examinerades. Frågan om hur väl förberedda de nyexaminerade lärarna var för sitt yrke kopplas till de nationella reformer som styrde lärarutbildningen under den period som läraren studerade. Medan utbildningen i praktisk yrkeskunskap uppfattas ha försämrats över tid, har andra områden förbättrats. Lärosäte hade inte något samband med respondenternas svarsmönster. Slutsatsen är att utbildningsreformerna har samband med förändringar i utbildningens måluppfyllelse, att förbereda lärarstudenter för sitt yrke, samt att utbildningens anpassning till yrkets krav försämrats över tid.

    Vehicle automated driving systems, capable of performing all dynamic driving tasks are profoundly changing the traffic environment. With increased automation the vehicles are gradually becoming artificial agents that act and interact in conjunction with human agents, creating a pristine social context. This paper addresses the interaction between ‘pedestrian-vehicle’ and ‘driver-vehicle’. The idea is to make interaction as humanlike as possible, to increase safety and a positive user experience. We suggest that concepts describing social attunement in human-human interaction also can be applied to human-vehicle interaction. Social attunement implies a scenario where human and vehicle share intentions, infer goals of the interaction partner, are mutually predictable, and understand performance limitations. Furthermore, we propose the use of an in-vehicle avatar interface to assist in this interaction. A reason for using an avatar is that it can be hypothesised that the user can interact more naturally with an anthropomorphic artificial agent.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to sketch a taxonomy describing various team leader interventions, as a consequence of interferences occurring at group meetings. The taxonomy is intended to serve as foundation for future research, methodology and test development. Sixteen Swedish business organisation leaders participated in the case study. The study consisted of ten fictitious scenarios, implying interferences concerning goal achievement. The participants were to propose interventions to the different situations. Based on the results, six categories of interventions were identified: control, inform, initiate, await, support, and explore. The categories corresponded to classical leadership theories. Furthermore, fictitious group scenarios seem to provide information about leadership thinking and interventional styles concerning team work. Scenarios also seem to measure something different than traditional assessment instruments do. This is in accordance with social personality theory, emphasising that personality assessments should not be decontextualised by excluding information concerning the situations in which people are acting.

    The PLA Policy Situation in Sweden2018In: Prior Learning Assessment Inside Out, E-ISSN 2333-3588, no 6Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This article describes the origins of and changes in Swedish prior learning assessment (PLA/validering) poli-cies since the mid-1990s. The article argues that a key event in this history, the Adult Education Initiative of 1996, was implemented in direct response to significant changes in the Swedish labor market, and that PLA, a “process of structured assessment,” then was called on as a way to recognize unacknowledged work skills. The main course for Swedish PLA has been to lift the educational levels of the low-educated unemployed, thus opening up educational paths that previously did not existed for this and other groups. But during these years, other purposes have been stressed, for example during the recession around 2008 and 2012 where PLA was lifted up as a tool to enhance labor market transitions, and in 2015 during the great migration from especially Syria, it was seen as a way of assessing and recognizing foreign acquired knowledge and skills in order to both integrate newcomers and fill vacancies in trades that lacked skills. The article shows that over the last two decades, both the focus and strength of PLA discussions and implementation in Sweden have varied. In the recent 2015 National Delegation for Validation, for example, the government renewed its inter-est in PLA policy as a means of making knowledge and skills visible. The question of whether this promise can be realized is taken up throughout the article.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to anazlye accidents occurring in the Swedish construction industry focusing specifically on the situation in the individual trades. The article includes all occupational accidents with at least one day of absence from work that were reported to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency for the year of 2016. The results, focusing on accident cause, injured body parts, as well as accidents per weekday, month and age, show that although the trades share commonalities regarding occupational accidents a number of trade-specific problem areas stand out. With this in mind, conclusions are drawn regarding the situation in each respective trade and suggestions are made for future studies focusing on accidents in construction industry trades.

    Today’s highly integrated product development practices emphasize the need to transform the engineering education from disciplinary to transdisciplinary. This paper is based on the results of an empirical study designed to introduce a common transdisciplinary design process in engineering education. It aims to validate the hypothesis that engineering disciplines in education share a common engineering design process. It describes the methodology for the development of a Transdisciplinary Engineering Design Education Ontology (TEDEO) for eight major engineering disciplines. It proposes a high-level transdisciplinary engineering design process that consolidates a diverse array of engineering terms and concepts into a generalized model.

    This paper examines a digital employee-oriented innovation program at a global IT-firm. It addresses the research question: how is the generation and promotion of employee ideas organised by the management, and what are the behavioural implications in terms of participation of such an organising? Drawing on the literature on inclusive innovation and employee-driven innovation, the authors explore the extent to which ordinary employees are included in innovative processes at work. The critical discourse analysis of written and spoken text exposes inclusiveness concerning the managements’ production and distribution of innovation discourse in the initial phases of the program. However, the analysis simultaneously reveals considerable excluding elements in the ordinary employees’ consumption of this discourse in its latter phases, particularly regarding the parallel discourses “we are all innovators” and “the single winning entrepreneur”.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to advance knowledge about the mechanisms behind, and the implications of, varying involvement in digitally enhanced employee-driven innovation (EDI) by studying how a firm integrates a web-based tool in the organization of its EDI process. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a qualitative in-depth interview study with managers and employees at one high-performing and one low-performing office of a global IT firm, a critical discourse analysis was performed. It explored how the EDI discourse was produced, distributed and consumed in relation to the web-based tool for collecting and selecting employee ideas. Findings: The results demonstrate that the production of the innovation discourse by the top-level management, which emphasizes client satisfaction rather than employee engagement, restricts the employees’ utilization of the digital platform that distributes the discourse. However, at the high-performing office, employee participation is ensured because the local managers act as co-distributors of the digital tool. Research limitations/implications: The single case study design limits the generalizability of the results, but is nevertheless relevant for understanding the mechanisms and implications in similar contexts where web-based tools are used to enhance EDI processes. Practical implications: The study provides practical insights into the importance of local management’s active promotion of digital tools in order to ensure employee involvement. Originality/value: The study contributes to the EDI literature by identifying some mechanisms behind and the implications of varying employee involvement in digitally enhanced EDI processes.

    Effective social interactions rely on humans' ability to attune to others within social contexts. Recently, it has been proposed that the emergence of shared representations, as indexed by the Joint Simon effect (JSE), might result from interpersonal coordination (Malone et al., 2014). The present study aimed at examining interpersonal coordination in cooperative and competitive joint tasks. To this end, in two experiments we investigated response coordination, as reflected in instantaneous cross-correlation, when co-agents cooperate (Experiment 1) or compete against each other (Experiment 2). In both experiments, participants performed a go/no-go Simon task alone and together with another agent in two consecutive sessions. In line with previous studies, we found that social presence differently affected the JSE under cooperative and competitive instructions. Similarly, cooperation and competition were reflected in co-agents response coordination. For the cooperative session (Experiment 1), results showed higher percentage of interpersonal coordination for the joint condition, relative to when participants performed the task alone. No difference in the coordination of responses occurred between the individual and the joint conditions when co-agents were in competition (Experiment 2). Finally, results showed that interpersonal coordination between co-agents implies the emergence of the JSE. Taken together, our results suggest that shared representations seem to be a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for interpersonal coordination.

    The devolution of public sector schooling systems has been a feature of education reform since the 1980s. In Western Australia, the Independent Public School (IPS) initiative has recently been installed, announced by the state government in 2009. Now over 80% of the state’s public school students attend IP schools. Drawing on interview data from a broader study of devolution and the conditions of teachers’ work, this article explores the cases of two schools – one IPS and one non-IPS. While both schools were ostensibly disadvantaged, they proved to be highly contrasting schooling sites, responding to the school marketplace in markedly different ways. We consider the ways in which the IPS initiative is contributing to the operation of market dynamics within the public school sector in WA, and argue that it has created new mechanisms for the residualisation of particular, and specifically non-IP, schools. Furthermore, while one school was apparently more of a ‘winner’ within the school marketplace, as it was attracting increasing student enrolments, we query what it might actually mean to ‘win’ in such a policy settlement, with staff at both schools reporting significant dissatisfaction in their work.

    Abstract [en]

    An archival study was conducted using offender descriptions reported to the police by witnesses (N=29) of the murder of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh in 2003. All descriptions had been collected within a month after the attack, and each witness had been interviewed between one and five times. Description accuracy was established using photographs of the perpetrator, captured by CCTV cameras minutes before the attack. Contrasting previous archival studies, offender descriptions were quite unreliable (42% of reported attributes were incorrect), and this pattern held for both basic features (e.g., height, age) and more detailed attributes (e.g., clothes). The completeness and accuracy of descriptions increased after (vs. before) images of the perpetrator had been published in the media, but only with regard to the perpetrators’ clothes. We acknowledge the potential effects of co-witness influence and post-event information.

    Performance Management and Rationalityin Public Sector Organisations2019Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract and Keywords  The thesis concerns different conceptions of rationality and their implications for organisations, especially in the public sector. The focus is on performance management (as widely defined) within public sector organisations as a subject for exploring these issues. This has long been controversial because seemingly simplistic approaches to performance management persist, despite well recognised shortcomings, such as a tendency to perverse incentives and unintended outcomes.  Therefore, in the kappa, I analyse the notion of instrumental rationality, examine the established critique of instrumental rationality from a ‘political’ perspective and present the dilemma that this creates; i.e. how to improve processes of resource allocation and performance evaluation, while recognising organisational realities such as imbalances in power. The potential of communicative rationality as an alternative conceptualisation of rationality in organisations is then discussed.    The development of public sector management from the fiscal crises of the 1970s is explained, with the rise of the ‘New Public Management’ based on neo-liberal ideas, and the subsequent opposition to it from ‘New Public Governance’ and ‘New Public Services’ paradigms. These potentially give more scope to participative and deliberative processes of generating performance measurement packages and control systems. Moreover, in practice, particularly interesting examples of participatory approaches have been found in developing countries which align with communicative rationality. A critical position is adopted in the thesis, seeking to challenge ‘managerialist’ orthodoxies.  As a theoretical guide to understanding these issues, conceptual frameworks from the management control literature are used. Broadbent and Laughlin’s (2009) conceptual model of performance management systems has been of particular value. They draw on Weber and Habermas to distinguish between instrumental and communicative rationality models and between transactional and relational performance management systems. This enables them to identify two distinct ideal types of ‘rationality clusters’ (instrumental and communicative) to which organisations will incline. They also contend that contingent factors influence where actual organisations are located between these two ideal types.          7  The four papers I have selected for the licentiate from my various publications report on research carried out in three different public sector settings using different methods of investigation. Paper 1 considers the approaches to resource allocation and performance measurement then used by English Health Authorities at the time of writing. In Paper 2 an evaluation carried out at an English police service, utilising cost-consequences analysis, is described and discussed. Papers 3 and 4 concern a performance management regime for the English ambulance service, which became noted for promoting perverse incentives and ‘gaming’, and its subsequent replacement. The first two papers foreground issues of rationality and the last two issues of performance management; but these topics are interrelated and are relevant throughout. It is argued in all the papers that comprehensively ‘rationalistic’ approaches are flawed and that participation, deliberation and dialogue between stakeholders are desirable.

    Chinaʹs mining enterprises are confronted with insufficient safety investments, insufficientsafety benefits, recurrent occupational diseases and accidents, low level of safety riskmanagement, and many employee complaints, that seriously affect the economicdevelopment and the sustainable development of the country. Selection of scientific, accurateand comprehensive evaluation methods of all aspects of occupational health and safetymanagement will directly affect the evaluation results and then the direction of improvement;which is greatly needed.

    The aim of this thesis is twofold: one aim is to test and analyze a set of evaluationmethods that provide different perspectives on how occupational health and safetymanagement really works in the mining industry in Ezhou City, China. The other aim is toexplore a set of comprehensive evaluation methods that are suitable for occupational healthand safety management in the industries as a whole.

    This thesis is based on the theory of Multi Objective Decision Making and Grey System,and is broken down into three phases including:

    •  The first phase of my study: to describe the applications of the methods in five aspects ofoccupational health and safety in the mining industry in Ezhou City, China. This isshown in five articles and Chapter 1‐5.
    •  The second phase: to present some suggestions of improvements for the development ofthe occupational health and safety in the mining industry in Ezhou City, China. This ispresented in Chapter 6 in my study.
    •  The third phase: to explore a set of comprehensive evaluation methods that are suitablefor the occupational health and safety management in the industries. This is also shownin Chapter 6 in my study.

    In this thesis I mainly used six methods to evaluate occupational health and safetymanagement and the suitability of them for this type of research as well as in other types inindustrial activity. The six methods included in my research are: entropy weight(EW), failuremode and effect analysis (FMEA), improved analytic hierarchy process (AHP), dataenvelopment analysis (DEA), grey relational analysis (GRA) and 2‐tuple linguisticinformation (2‐TLI). The results of the analysis showed that:

    •  EW can be well used to evaluate the multi indicators of occupational health and safetymanagement, and can be extended to other areas such as safety management evaluation,the quality of the project, project forecasting and other industrial activities;
    •  FMEA has been proved practical, simple and less costly in the perspective of riskmanagement, occupational health and safety management, identification and control ofenvironmental factors in enterprises, and quality key point preventive control in allindustrial activities;
    •  Improved AHP is practical, simple and less costly for multi objective and multi criteriadecision making problems in all industrial activities;
    •  DEA is special for production efficiency and can well estimate the effective productionfrontier by calculating the history data of the financial department, and embodies itsunique advantages in dealing with multi indicator inputs and multi indicator outputs inall industrial activities;
    •  GRA does not require too much sample size and any typical distribution regulation; thecalculated amount of data is relatively small, and the results would always be in goodagreement with the qualitative analysis, so it is quite suitable for measuring the degree ofassociation between factors for indicator evaluation according to their similarity ordissimilarity. GRA can cope with the types of problem associated with comparisonbetween evaluation objects and the comparison object in all industrial activities;
    •  2‐TLI is special for language information and can provide the basis for multi‐attributedecision analysis in spite of large amounts of calculation in all industrial activities.

    On the whole, each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and the key to judgingwhether a method is most suitable is if it can withstand the validation of practice. Anyhow,the main contribution of this research is that it has systematically tested and verified a set ofstatistical methods applied in a mining industry in Ezhou, China, and explored a set ofstatistical methods utilized in occupational health and safety management in industrialactivities. Additionally, another contribution of this research is that it has provided a directionfor improvement of sustainable development.

    This study adds to the literature on the gendered culture of the forest sector by examining testimonies of sexual harassment in relation to the gendering of forestry-related competence and organisations and the consequences that the sexualisation of social relations in organisations has, mainly for women. The empirical base of the study comprised testimonies within the campaign #slutavverkat published on Instagram to highlight experiences of sexual harassment of women in the Swedish forest sector. Qualitative content analysis of the testimonies suggested that the situations described in the testimonies in #slutavverkat comprise controlling actions that diminish women's power in the forest sector. Sexualised forms of male control and harassment thus work to remind women that they are first and foremost a representation of women, rather than of forestry professions and knowledge. In that sense, sexualised forms of male control and harassment are part of, rather than deviating from, the overall gendering of forestry as a men-dominated sphere. The study adds to organisational understandings and policy developments on discrimination and harassment and suggests that researchers and policy-makers interested in reducing inequality in forestry need to pay more attention to issues of harassment and sexualisation of social relations.

    Both exploitative and explorative innovations are needed for sustainable developmentin any industry, but balancing the two types is a delicate matter, and exploitation tends to bestrongly prioritized in many industries. This is typically evident in project-based industries (PBIs), which are characterized by a fragmented supply chain and the delivery of one-off solutions in business projects. Realizing explorative innovations in this context is complex due to the need to transfer new knowledge between the organization developing the innovations and actors in inter-organizational business projects. The aim of this paper is to highlight areas in the management of explorative innovations developed outside business projects, to increase the understanding of where the specific market setting of PBIs might necessitate an adapted approach for successful realization. A case study of three innovation projects in organizations operating in PBIs have been conducted. The findings confirm that the major challenges lie in the transition between development project and business project. We highlight three aspects linked to this transition that require a flexible management approach: the assignation and acceptance of suitable responsibilities and roles, flexible support for the innovation process, and system acceptance. The findings may provide guidance for actors in PBIs strategically seeking to promote sustainable development, and provide foundations for further research to develop support for explorative innovation.

    The paper suggests an assessment tool for production innovation, a way of assessing innovation aspects in production development projects. The tool captures innovation as “new and value-added change of a production related activity”. The tool was tested through a questionnaire survey sent to 30 research and innovation (R&I) projects funded by the Swedish Strategic Innovation Program Produktion2030, involving research institutions and industrial organizations. Results point at a varied distribution programme impact through resulting change activities. Identified areas for innovation were materials, decision support, tools, methods, and solutions estimated as new to industry and to the global business community.

    The present study explores the adoption of electroencephalography andeye tracking to assess physiological differences between divergent and convergentthinking. In neuroscientifi c literature alpha power synchronization in the rightparietal lobe has been associated to top-down inhibition of task-irrelevant cognitiveprocesses occurring during divergent thinking, but fi ndings in oculometric studiesseem to suggest a bottom-up process operated by active visual-gating. In the presentstudy, 14 male engineering students performed an adaptation of the AlternativeUses task under two experimental conditions. During the task brainwaves andocular activity were collected using electroencephalography and eye tracking, butresults did not reach statistical signifi cance. Improvements in the experimentalsetting and analysis method to overcome similar problems are presented. Futurestudies should further delve into the infl uences on results of experimental settingsand of analysis methods to increase comparability among physiological studies.

    Involvering av civilsamhället – dvs medborgare och intresseorganisationer – i forskning och innovation ses i Sverige och EU som ett sätt att öka relevansen, acceptansen, effekten, nyttan, kvaliteten och hållbarheten i både resultaten och processerna. Enligt den så kallade Lamy-rapporten behöver samhället bli ett ”levande laboratorium” där medborgare aktivt deltar i utvecklingen av innovativa lösningar på Europas samhällsutmaningar. I denna rapport kallas detta för ”inkluderande forskning och innovation” och diskuteras utifrån olika logiker, grader, faser och former. Särskilt uppmärksammas den deltagande tradition som vuxit sig stark i Sverige, där akademi och samhälle samverkar i utvecklingen av nya kunskaper och lösningar. Formerna för och omfattningen av involvering kan variera stort mellan olika inriktningar och processer. I den lägsta graden av involvering ger medborgare passivt forskare tillgång till insamling av data, medan de i högre grader av involvering aktivt bidrar till datainsamling och analys. I den högsta graden av involvering medverkar medborgare i hela processen av problemformulering, planering, genomförande och utvärdering. Exempel på konkreta former för involvering är forskningscirklar, dialogseminarier, förändringsledare, Citizen-based suggestions, AIMdays och Science shops. Det finns även flera olika former för inkluderande innovation, som exempelvis Co-labs, Designlabb och Living labs. Där utvecklar forskare och medborgare gemensamt nya lösningar på behov hos människor, organisationer och samhälle. Detta kallas bland annat för deltagande innovation, användardriven innovation och social innovation.

    This article scrutinises the development of a socially innovative service concept for cultural health, where approaches from the cultural areas are employed to improve the well-being, life-quality and empowerment among people in long-term unemployment or sick-leave, thus potentially serving to increase the inclusiveness in working life. The study delineates the preconditions for conceptualising, packaging and implementing the concept, in light of previous studies on social innovation and service innovation. The results expose that these preconditions are dependent on the attained social value creation, where target groups and concerned organisations from various societal sectors are actively involved in the identification of needs, in the development of innovative solutions and in the strive for social change on individual, organisational and societal levels. The study thus serves to further expand the field of innovation studies, regarding knowledge on the mechanisms of attaining an inclusive working life.

    The study advances the knowledge regarding how the participatory elements in the policies and research approaches relate through a participatory case study of a joint R&I process to develop a model for social innovation support in Sweden. The case study helps distinguish potential synergies between various degrees of involvement advocated in the policies and research approaches, as well as between the reliance on trending policy concepts vs. scientific notions of validity. Social innovation is perceived as a potential bridge between these elements, as it draws upon participatory academic traditions, while simultaneously tapping into current policy trends of co-creation, in the development of new approaches and solutions to societal challenges.

    Abstract [en]

    By investigating the occurrence of place innovative synergies between retail and tourism in a small-sized Swedish city, this article advances knowledge on how city center attractiveness can be enforced in a rural context with competing online shopping and suburban/out-of-town shopping centers. Previous studies of city center attractiveness, place innovation, and social innovation help distinguish innovative intertwinement of correlated trends of experiencing retail and retailing experiences, augmenting customer experiences through place-based characteristics. Interviews, workshops, and participatory observations with entrepreneurs, business promoters, and municipality representatives reveal three dimensions of place innovative synergies in city center attractiveness: 1) innovative variance in city center retail and tourism, 2) innovative interwovenness between the city center identity and its configuration, content, and communication, and 3) innovative interaction between retailers and tourism entrepreneurs in city center events. A key question is whether synergies in temporal events and everyday commerce are sufficiently combined, in order to engender encompassing renewal.

    Abstract [en]

    Despite the prominent role of norms and values in public education policy and practice social innovation studies have rarely investigated how these are converted into practical transformations in the educational sector. The study therefore aims to provide further insight into the impact of contextualized and materialized norms and values in educational social innovation, using a remodeling process of preschool facilities in a Swedish municipality as an illustrating case study. Seeking to ensure equal and inclusive play, learning and development, the studied process exposes the impact of materialized norms and values on enabling and disabling rooms, furniture and materials in the preschool facilities. As such norms and values impact social transformation process regardless of the contextual specificities, the results may be useful also in other preschools in Sweden and internationally.

    Tidigare forskning visar att framgångsrika jämställdhetsinsatser bygger på ett tydligt ledarskap samtidigt som medarbetare är delaktiga i det praktiska förändringsarbetet. I Luleå tekniska universitets projekt Från macho till modern – jämställdhet i skogsbrukets arbetsorganisationer som bedrevs 2013-2015 med finansiering från VINNOVA testades ett nytt grepp för att skapa såväl ledningsstyrning som bred förankring genom så kallade ”designteams”. Med stöd av VD och HR-representanter i tre skogsrelaterade skapades designteams som bestod av ett urval av cirka tio medarbetare från alla i nivåer i organisationerna med olika kön, kompetenser och antal år i organisationen. På så sätt skapades en såväl horisontell som vertikal mix av medarbetare för att få en så nyanserad bild som möjligt av genomförda, pågående och potentiella jämställdhetsinsatser. Målet var att designteamen skulle utveckla innovativa lösningar för jämställdhet i skogsnäringen.

    Abstract [en]

    It is suggested that the space industry is an ideal case for Additive Manufacturing (AM), with a low production volume and need for complex geometries. However, few engineers have experience of AM design. One way to support design engineers with limited experience of AM is the use of design heuristics, to enhance variety, quality and creativity of potential designs. This paper is based on literature studies and observations of creative workshops with companies from the space industry. Results showed that heuristics assisted designers and 8/10 heuristics was utilised during the ideation phase.

    Abstract [en]

    This report was as an initial input to the two research projects Attractive Workplaces Through Industry 4.0 and Produktion 4.0. The purpose of the report has been to increase the understanding of Industry 4.0 on a general level. The goal was to describe what Industry 4.0 is, how it may affect organizations in the future as well as position the concept in a bigger context of national strategies and organizational models.

    Industry 4.0 was presented as the German national strategy in 2013. Industry 4.0 has been found to be a technological concept that can be characterized by Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and smart factories. On a general level, Industry 4.0 can be described as a digitalization where products, machines and entire factories become interconnected. This is possible through vertical integration, horizontal integration and end-to-end integration. It has been stated that Industry 4.0 is not an organizational model, even though elements of previously known organizational models may be indirectly implemented through Industry 4.0.

    Industry 4.0 is expected to shift routine work towards a freer role for future operators. With an increase in complexity, future work is expected to be characterized as mental work to a greater extent. A risk identified is the possibility of a polarization of the workforce, where some jobs are enriched with variation in work content and others depleted. A vision for a future Operator 4.0 has been established within the literature. In this vision, the operator is an integrated component in the complex system of an Industry 4.0 environment. This integration face challenges in terms of integrity and privacy, since the collection of data about individuals will be a necessity.

    The complex and abstract systems of Industry 4.0 implies that dealing with technology that, after all, does not work will be increasingly difficult for workers. Technological solutions such as smart cognitive support tools and smart personal protective equipment can be seen as possible solutions to future problems in the working environment. There is a risk, however, that an excessively large technical focus can lead to technical solutions being given priority over changes in the working environment that constitute the cause of the problems. Given the decentralization that is often referred to in Industry 4.0, both negative and positive changes can be expected. Decentralization can contribute to increased freedom in how and where work is carried out, but can at the same time increase requirements for accessibility and cause uncertainty in who is responsible for the working environment. Industry 4.0 is likely to result in new working environments as well as old problems occurring in a new context. Given the digitalization of the industrial sector, the digital working environment is expected to become a more central matter.

    Descriptions of Industry 4.0 tends to be visionary and may at first glance appear as unproblematic. Before Industry 4.0 can become reality the scientific, technological, economic, social and political challenges must be addressed. The report concludes that a broad focus, where technology is implemented on human terms, will be necessary for Industry 4.0 to be successful.

    Purpose

    Using a theory of translation of ideas, the purpose of this paper is to investigate how the mining industry has implemented and practices lean production as well as the form of this practice.

    Design/methodology/approach

    The study reviewed the scientific literature on lean production in the mining industry, as well as in the reported practice of the concept in a mining company. The results were then analyzed using content analysis.

    Findings

    Lean production has not seen a full implementation in the mining industry. Rather, select practices are focused, though the literature covers several more. The findings suggest that the form and extension of lean production in mining differ from other industries owing to characteristics of the industry itself.

    Research limitations/implications

    The scientific literature on the subject is limited. Additional material was used to attempt to offset this. However, there are still blind spots relating to practice that is not reported in the type of material investigated.

    Originality/value

    This paper contributes to understanding the evolution of lean production in a unique industry. It suggests why lean implementation may be unsuccessful in this type of industry while also identifying the focal point of its lean production practice.

    The mining industry has experienced important improvements with regard to its safety record and work environment. But there is still room for further improvement and the mining industry now faces the challenge of securing a future workforce: The current workforce is aging, and mining work increasingly requires a more qualified workforce. Designing Ergonomic, Safe, and Attractive Mining Workplaces seeks to give an understanding of what must be considered in the design of mining workplaces. By reviewing and discussing the historic and current development of the mining industry as well as problems related to the safety, ergonomics, and attractiveness of mining workplaces, it demonstrates that the challenges facing the mining industry often need to be solved on a case-to-case basis.

    The processes through which these issues are managed are of significant importance. To facilitate a proactive approach, the book covers the principles of systematic work environment management, together with examples of methods for risk management and work environment monitoring. It introduces a systematic and iterative design and planning method for the mining industry. This method acknowledges that all relevant stakeholders must be able to influence the design of ergonomic, safe, and attractive mining workplaces.

    Abstract [en]

    This article investigates safety-related developments in the Swedish mining industry over a 30-year period, from the 1980s to the 2010s. It studies what may have contributed to lowering the accident frequency rates and improvement of safety more broadly in the industry. On this basis, interviews were conducted with informants from mining companies. This material was supplemented with a workshop with mining health and safety representatives and documents relating to the subject. The results are divided into four main themes, showing that from the 1980s and onwards, lowered rates and general safety improvements followed in the wake of technology development. This was complemented by a more direct focus on organisational aspects of safety beginning in the early 2000s. Still the effectiveness of the individual measures is not clear; while they theoretically have an effect, causality is hard to show. In other words, the improvements may not necessarily depend on the specifics of these initiatives. Given this, the article discusses the different initiatives in-depth, and gives suggestions for future research and industry action. This includes recommendations for approaching safety holistically and the development of new proactive indicators.

    The purpose of the study is to model the micro-scale process patterns which can be identified during team conceptual design activities. A state-transition model has been developed and used to empirically investigate the patterns of design operations during two types of team conceptual design activities: ideation and concept review. The presented work builds on the perception of design problems as ill-defined and implies that conceptual design activities involve the simultaneous development of problems and solutions using three distinctive design operations—analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The three design operations have been defined as fine-grain design steps performed by design teams when exploring the content of both the problem and the solution dimensions of the design space. Moreover, design operations have been conceptualised as transitions between states of the explored design space, thus providing a basis for the state-transition model. The model’s ability to map and visualise proportions of design operation sequences emerging during ideation and concept review has facilitated the identification of both the activity-specific patterns and patterns that were likely to appear during both types of empirically investigated activities. The two activities exhibited similar patterns, such as alternation of solution synthesis and analysis, sequences of synthesis, analysis and evaluation within solution space, and the potential co-evolution episodes. Nevertheless, divergent traits have been identified for ideation, and convergent traits for concept review, based on the significant differences in proportions of design operations and their sequences.

    Shifts in schooling policy have had substantial impact upon the role of principals as well as the relationship that principals have with their teaching staff. In this paper we report on the initiatives 30 principals in a diverse range of devolved Australian government schools adopt to shape and support the local, school-level working conditions of teachers. Surprisingly, principals were commonly unable to articulate – or even respond to – this matter. More commonly principals reported being oriented to lifting capability through a focus on student outcomes, a focus that is consistent with much of the devolution and autonomy rhetoric. Of those who could respond regarding working conditions, dispositions of paternalistic ‘care’, basic distributive actions or even a lack of influence or control were reported, and clear spatial and social dimensions accompanied these patterns. Given that devolution has recently created new responsibilities for principals in Australian government schools, including in relation to staff, this finding is understandable but none the less holds substantial implications and raises questions about the managerial capacity needed for schools to be sustainable, positive workplaces.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    The aim of this study is to contribute with increased knowledge about gender in mining by exploring how women are discursively represented in texts produced by actors in the international mining arena.

    Design/methodology/approach

    The study combines corpus linguistic methods and discourse analysis. It implies a combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses, where the former is used as the point of departure for the latter, and where the material analysed is chosen on the basis of certain selected search phrases. The source for the study is the web, and the search engine used for the retrieval of data is WebCorp Live, a tool tailored for linguistic analysis of web material.

    Findings

    The analysis reveals that although the overarching theme in the women-in mining discourse is that women are needed in the industry, the underlying message is that women in mining are perceived as problematic.

    Practical implications

    The study shows that if mining is to change into a modern industry, the inherent hyper-masculine culture and its effects on the whole industry needs to be problematised and made evident. To increase the mere number of women, with women still heavily underrepresented, is not enough to break gender-biased discrimination.

    Originality/value

    The research contributes with new knowledge about gender in mining by using a method, which so far has had limited usage in (critical) discourse analysis.

    This paper presents a design teaching approach that aims to support students to shift their approach when exploring, prototyping and testing user interactions with physical products. This is conducted in a bottom-up, iterative manner to change the perspective from focusing on the opportunities of user-involvement during the form-giving process, rather than prematurely stressing the design outcome. Instead of emphasising on aesthetics and appearance, the design approach emphasises how users perceive, interact with and experience products. Through a series of workshops, apedagogical approach was developed for exploring and designing user actions with physical products, based on the notion of ‘action layers’. Action layers offer a mindset of designing, which facilitates understanding of, and design for, intuitive and tangible interaction. The approach builds on product semantics and emphasises cognitive and action-based paradigms to create intuitive and embodied information-for-use. Action layers present product interaction as a sequence of four steps; invite, engage, enable, and confirm. In the workshops, students iteratively explored form, prototyped and tested interaction with users through sketching with physical models, starting with minimal surface and edge treatments, eventually ending up with functional cues and meaningful form for a certain product type and environment. Through testing and evaluation, students learn to understand user behaviour, relate to their own expectations and intent to the design situation, and iteratively improve the design. The outcomes suggest that students advance their insights on how users interpret, respond to and interact with products, which consequently extends their ability to design products better suited for use.

    This paper describes results from the development of two new industrial design courses in order to improve student learning in both practical and theoretical skills. Practical skills, such as model making and sketching, cannot be studied only as theory. These skills need training, implementation, and time to allow the knowledge to mature. The new course design build upon the CDIO framework where especially two standards are incorporated in the new course design: Standard 3 - Integrated curriculum, where personal and interpersonal skills, and product, process, and system building skills are interwoven with disciplinary knowledge, and Standard 5 - Design-Implement Experiences, where emphasis is on learning by doing, that the students will learn from actually designing something. This paper contains results from studies made during the first implementation of the two new courses, both from a teacher- and a student perspective. Redesigning several courses at the same time facilitates constructive alignment on course level where course activities are aligned with examination, and on program level where course content build upon previous courses and the proper learning outcomes are addressed at the proper time in the education program. On a course level, the results indicate that students are positive towards the interwoven practical and theoretical parts. Also, the student understanding of how different knowledge interact, both practical hands-on and theoretical knowledge, seem to have increased compared to previous years. On a program level, there are indications that much effort should go into organizing the sometimes new roles for the teachers and if overlooked could affect the course negatively, but we now have the knowledge how to implement the CDIO framework to develop courses for improved student learning.
