    Technologies in older people's care: Values related to a caring rationality2017Ingår i: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 24, nr 2, s. 125-137Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUNDThe tension between care-based and technology-based rationalities motivates studies concerning how technology can be used in the care sector to support the relational foundation of care.OBJECTIVESThis study interprets values related to care and technologies connected to the practice of good care.RESEARCH DESIGNThis research study was part of a development project aimed at developing innovative work practices through information and communication technology. Participants and research context: All staff (n = 18) working at two wards in a care facility for older people were asked to participate in interviews, and 12 accepted. We analysed the data using latent content analysis in combination with normative analysis. Ethical considerations: The caregivers were informed that participation was voluntary and that they could drop out at any time without providing any explanation.FINDINGSFour values were identified: 'presence', 'appreciation', 'competence' and 'trust'. Caregivers wanted to focus on care receivers as unique persons, a view that they thought was compromised by time-consuming and beeping electronic devices. Appraising from next-of-kin and been seen as someone who can contribute together with knowledge to handle different situations were other desires. The caregivers also desired positive feedback from next-of-kin, as they wanted to be seen as professionals who have the knowledge and skills to handle difficult situations. In addition, the caregivers wanted their employer to trust them, and they wanted to work in a calm environment.DISCUSSIONCaregivers' desire for disturbance-free interactions, being valued for their skills and working in a trustful working environment were interpreted as their base for providing good care. The caregivers' arguments are based on caring rationality, and sometimes they felt the technological rationality interfered with their main mission, providing quality care.CONCLUSIONIntroducing new technology in caring should support the caring relationship. Although society's overall technology-based approach may have gained popularity as a problem solver, technology-based rationality may compromise a care-based rationality. A shift in attitudes towards care as a concept on all societal levels is needed.

Digital support for medication administration: Status-enhancing innovation for care workers?2013Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Background: There are assumptions that innovative ICT solutions in healthcare can improve the efficiency and contribute to increased quality. Innovation through ICT is also expected to increase status of and attract men to care work.A project aimed at finding innovative ICT solutions was realized between 2009 and 2012. The project involved a healthcare center and two nursing homes. Technicians (all men) were those in the project given the assignment of finding innovative solutions together with staff. Involved in the project were also ICT companies and academic researchers. This research study was undertaken in a nursing home context. A tool for medication administration was under development and to be tested.Purpose; to describe staff’s perceptions of digital support for medication administration and understand staff’s underlying values when arguing for or against the tool.Data collection; focus-group interviews were carried out to collect data. To analyze and interpret the content of the data, a phenomenographic method was used.Findings; Participants questioned the utility and also the need of the ICT solution. Participants also expressed a risk for impaired working environment as an effect of the tool. They also thought the tool would be complicated to use and sometimes would lack in performance. Increased status as an effect of introducing ICT was a belief that was not held by the staff. Conclusions; Setting aside the fact that from the perspective of an outsider, the intention of the project was indeed to do good , staff did not perceive the ICT solution in a positive manner. Politicians and policymakers may be over emphasizing the possibilities of ICT for solving future challenges in healthcare. Focus on technological innovations and a discourse in which care workers are excluded can actually be contra-productive to the possibilities of enhancing the status of care work, which is still predominantly performed by women

Aberrant eating behavior in elderly parkinsonian patients with and without dementia: analysis of video-recorded meals1989Ingår i: Research in Nursing & Health, ISSN 0160-6891, E-ISSN 1098-240X, Vol. 12, nr 1, s. 41-51Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aberrant eating behavior among 14 elderly, non-demented and 10 demented patients with Parkinson's disease was studied by means of video-recordings. The findings revealed problems in handling food on the plate, transporting food into the mouth, manipulating food in the mouth, and swallowing. Interpretations were performed based on impairments of autonomic processes, perception, cognition, emotion, and motor performance that occur in the disease.

    Pain among persons living at a nursing home2000Ingår i: Vård i Norden, ISSN 0107-4083, E-ISSN 1890-4238, Vol. 20, nr 2, s. 20-23Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Pain is common among elderly. Very sick elderly persons living in nursing homes often have communication problems because of dementia or stroke, which causes problem to judge pain and evaluate effects of pain treatment. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence, localisation and expressions of pain and to evaluate the usefulness of some pain assessment methods for nursing home residents. The study included 66 elderly living in a nursing home of which 49% had dementia as main medical diagnosis. A specially trained registered nurse (RN) performed pain assessment by * presenting a set of pain assessment tools * interpreting the nursing home residents' reactions during activity and * interviewing the resident about perceived pain. Two physiotherapists (PTs) performed physical examination including assessment of joint motion and palpation of joints and muscles. Contractures and ambulating status were noted. Cognitive Performance Scale (CPS) assessed cognitive capacity. When assisted by the RN 61% of the residents used independent or by assistance a verbal rating scale. The RN made an estimation of pain in all the nursing home residents and the PTs examined 92% of the residents. Pain was identified in 88% of the residents, 42% of the residents were treated with analgesics and pain it-as documented in the nurses' daily notes in 27% of the patient records. All residents with contractures had pain in the engaged joint. This study indicates that it is possible to assess pain by combining interview and interpretation of the residents' reactions during activity. Detection of pain by physical examination is a valuable complement especially for persons with decreased ability to communicate.

Nutritional status in patients with acute stroke1988Ingår i: Acta Medica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6101, Vol. 224, nr 3, s. 217-224Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

By measuring three anthropometric variables (relative weight, triceps skinfold thickness and arm muscle circumference) and three circulating proteins (albumin, transferrin and prealbumin), nutritional status was assessed in 100 consecutive patients with acute stroke. On admission to hospital, two or more indicators showed subnormal values for 16%; this was associated with the female sex, high age and a history of atrial fibrillation. At discharge, 22% had two or more subnormal indicators. Poor nutritional status during the hospital stay appeared to be related to infections, the male sex, the intake of cardiovascular drugs and high age. Fewer of the patients with two or more subnormal nutritional indicators were able to return home than of the patients with none or one subnormal nutritional indicator. We conclude that undernutrition is not uncommon at the onset of stroke and that certain risk groups for the development of undernutrition during hospital stay can be identified.

Eating problems and nutritional status during hospital stay of patients1989Ingår i: Journal of the American Dietetic Association, ISSN 0002-8223, E-ISSN 1878-3570, Vol. 89, nr 6, s. 1092-6Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Eating problems and nutritional status were studied in a consecutive series of patients who had had strokes. From this cohort, 32 subjects (mean age 73 years) with a hospital stay of 21 days or more are described. Eating problems were identified by direct participant observations of the patients' eating behavior, interviews on admission, inspections of the mouth, and discussions with the patients. Nutritional status was assessed by weight, triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), arm muscular circumference (AMC), plasma albumin, serum transferrin, and plasma prealbumin on admission and then weekly. Eating problems were identified in 27 patients. In a general linear hypothesis program, poor nutritional status 3 weeks after admission was found to be associated with (in decreasing order) low self-care performance, poor nutritional status on admission, male sex, intravenous energy-containing fluids, advanced age, paresis of the right arm, and eating problems. Factors other than eating problems seem to be important for undernutrition in patients with strokes during hospital stay. AD - Department

E-Health in care of older persons in the future2010Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 19, nr Suppl. 1, s. 54-Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: To achieve quality care in the person's home implies that the way we perform the care has to be developed. In this development new technology services, including mobile distance-spanning technology and information- and communication technology, has to be used. The aim of this presentation is to explore some issues important to consider before implementation of e-health services in care of older persons at home. Method: The presentation is based on studies where healthy older persons (n=23), older persons who had experience of being cared for with mobile distance-spanning technology (n=9) and general practitioners (n=17) were interviewed about their perceptions, views and experiences concerning the use of technology in care at home and quality care. The interviews were analysed by qualitative content analysis. Results: In the results from the different studies there were some common results. One was the importance of human meetings; another was that the person in need of care and the health professional need to know each other if virtual meetings should be possible. Other issues brought up in the different studies were trust, quality care, the need of combining home care services with visits at health care centres and hospitals, different technical equipment are only useful in specific circumstances, and mobile distance-spanning technology should not be looked at separately but as one part of a complex chain of health care services where all parts of the chain are needed. Conclusion: E-health including mobile distance-spanning technology and information- and communication technology is on its way to be accepted and used in home care for older persons. It is important that nurses as professionals actively take part in the development, designing and testing of the technical devices.

    Abstract [en]

Using a training programme developed by Heimlich, we have attempted to train swallowing in a 78-year-old man who had been fed by a nasogastric tube for 3 years after a stroke. The training was successful and, during a follow-up of 1 year, the patient was eating normal food. The training process is analysed as a two-level communication between the patient and his trainer; the therapeutic relationship and the training programme. The development of the patient's attitudes during training is interpreted with reference to Erikson's theory of 'eight stages of man'

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe how women with chronic heart failure (CHF) experience becoming ill, being ill and how they adjust to their new life situation. Qualitative interviews were carried out with 16 women with CHF (aged 4172 years). Interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis as a method. The content was sorted in three categories: To become ill, To be ill and To be a carrier of a chronic heart disease. To become ill was described by bodily discomfort, emotional experiences and contact with health care. To be ill was described through having troubles, to be in need of help and support, adaptation to the illness and to be scared. To be a carrier of a chronic heart disease was described by attitudes towards physical activity, attitudes towards cigarette smoking and a lifelong medication. These women describe their illness experience in various ways. Their descriptions confirm the earlier knowledge of consequences of CHF and also reveal new knowledge. This may increase our understanding of how it is to live with a chronic heart failure and this understanding can be used in planning the rehabilitation

    Self-care for minor illness2015Ingår i: Primary Health Care Research and Development, ISSN 1463-4236, E-ISSN 1477-1128, Vol. 16, nr 1, s. 71-78Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To describe experiences with and knowledge of minor illness, self-care interventions used in minor illness and channels of information used when providing self-care for minor illness. Background: Although minor illness is self-limiting, symptoms can be substantial and have a great impact on the affected person’s wellbeing. Possibilities to seek and find information about health and self-care have significantly increased through internet-based communities, forums, and websites. Still, a considerable number of consultations with general practitioners are for conditions that are potentially self-treatable. Seeking advanced care for minor illnesses is costly for society and can create discomfort for patients as they are down-prioritized at emergency departments. Methods: Study participants were recruited randomly from the Swedish Adress Register. A questionnaire was sent out, and the final sample included 317 randomly selected persons aged 18–80 and living in Sweden.Findings: Having experienced a specific illness correlated with self-reported knowledge. Preferred self-care interventions differed between different conditions, but resting and self-medicating were commonly used, along with consulting health care facilities. Compliance to advice was the highest for official information channels, and family members were a popular source of advice.

Satisfaction with nursing care and work during a year of clinical supervision and individualized care: Comparison between two wards for the care of severely demented patients1993Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management, ISSN 0966-0429, E-ISSN 1365-2834, Vol. 1, nr 6, s. 297-307Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

An intervention study was set up to explore the effects of the implementation of planned individualized care and regular systematic clinical supervision regarding nurses' degree of satisfaction with nursing care and work. All nurses on two similar wards caring for severely demented patients participated as experimental ward (EW) (n= 19) and control ward (CW) (n=20). Data were collected before intervention and at 6 months and 12 months during intervention, by means of a questionnaire developed in Sweden which assesses aspects of satisfaction with nursing care and work. Analysis was performed by means of principal component analysis, Wilcoxon rank sum test and Friedman two-way ANOVA. The baseline data showed no significant differences in the responses from the nurses on the two wards; they were found to be more satisfied than dissatisfied with their job although recognition from management was poor. During the intervention, the experimental ward nurses' experience of praise, professional growth, autonomy and quality of care, as well as their feeling of co-operation with colleagues and comfort improved significantly, while no changes occurred on the control ward. The quality of the written documentation on patients' needs and care improved significantly, and the experimental ward nurses also rejected significantly more strongly that their knowledge about patients and work was unsatisfactory. Their improved satisfaction with nursing care and work was believed to be related to the support they received in cognitive and emotional coping, the possibility of reflective learning and the change in management style associated with intervention.

Nurses' satisfaction with nursing care and work at three care units for severely demented people1995Ingår i: Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, ISSN 1351-0126, E-ISSN 1365-2850, Vol. 2, nr 3, s. 151-158Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the degree of job satisfaction, burnout and strain among nurses (n = 134) working in three care units for demented people in southern Sweden. Three questionnaires were used: the Maslach burnout inventory (MBI), the work-related strain inventory (WRSI), and a recently developed measure for assessing job satisfaction. Based on principal component analysis, an eight-factor job satisfaction scale was chosen. Nurses in general were found to be satisfied, with registered nurses (RNs) being most satisfied with their work and the nursing care provided. The nurses in one of the care units were more satisfied than the nurses on the other two. The MBI and WRSI results showed a low degree of burnout and work-related strain and there was little difference between the care units or the categories of nurses. Job satisfaction scores were relatively independent from the MBI and WRSI scores. However, scores from these two inventories of burnout and strain at work were positively correlated. The results of the questionnaires seem to indicate that positive work experience and negative experience are not opposites. This particular method of evaluating job satisfaction needs further development. However, it seems important to include one specific measure for job satisfaction when action is taken in connection with the working situation of nurses.

Professional caregivers’ perceptions on the prerequisites for and consequences of people with mild dementia using a digital photo diary2013Ingår i: Open Journal of Nursing, ISSN 2162-5336, E-ISSN 2162-5344, Vol. 3, nr 1, s. 42-54Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Research is currently ongoing to investigate the use of assistive technology by people with mild dementia to support independent living at home. The aim of this study was to describe professional caregivers’ perceptions on the prerequisites for and consequences of people with mild dementia using a digital photo diary to facilitate their talks about daily events with their family members. A questionnaire was sent out to 582 participants (response rate 70.1%) to elucidate the professional caregivers’ perceptions on the use of the digital photo diary. The questionnaire contained both quantitative and qualitative data and was analyzed with descriptive statistics, factor analysis, multivariate analysis of covariance and qualitative content analysis. This study reports the results related to prerequisites and consequences of using the photo diary. The results from the factor analysis revealed four factors: Trust, Vulnerability, Dependency/Independency and Control. The qualitative content analysis resulted in five categories: Immediate implementation after receiving a diagnose is required, Relatives’ participation is a necessity, Strengthened self-esteem and meaningful everyday life, Increased alienation and a feeling of isolation and Assistive digital devices provide opportunities. The theme was interpreted as: Personalization and the preservation of dignity. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that the participants had an overall positive view of the usage of this specific digital photo diary for people suffering from dementia, but rigorous considerations needs before implementation of the device and regularly follow ups if dignity is to be maintained for people with dementia.

Using assistive technology services at differing levels of care: healthy older couples' perceptions2010Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 66, nr 7, s. 1523-1532Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aim.: The aim of the study was to describe healthy older couples' perceptions of using assistive technology services when needing assistance with care. Background.: The use of information technology-based assistive technology services in elder care has increased as a result of an increase of care performed in private homes. The use of assistive technology services in care of older people at home has been evaluated as something positive by patients, relatives and nursing staff, while as resistance to their increased use has also been noted. Method.: Twelve healthy couples, aged over 70 years, from northern Sweden were interviewed in 2005 about their perceptions of using assistive technology services in the case of being in need of assistance with personal care. Open, individual semi-structured interviews supported by written vignettes describing three levels of caring needs were used and the data analysed with content analysis. Findings.: The findings were interpreted as one main theme with three categories: Asset or threat depends on caring needs and abilities. Three categories were identified within the theme: Assistive technology services provide an opportunity; The consequences of using assistive technology services are hard to anticipate; and Fear of assistive technology services when completely dependent on care. Conclusion.: Trust and security in the care of older people who are severely ill, dependent on care and living at home should be a hallmark in using assistive technology services. Human presence is an important dimension and must be considered when developing concepts for use of assistive technology services.

Elderly people's perceptions of how they want to be cared for: an interview study with healthy elderly couples in Northern Sweden2009Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 23, nr 2, s. 353-360Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Many countries encounter a demographic change where the number of elderly people will increase. As a result, the number of very old people needing care, services and medical assistance will increase. Care in the private home is often described as providing the best alternative for many elderly people. The aim of this study was to describe elderly people's perceptions of how they wanted to be cared for, from a perspective of becoming in need of assistance with personal care, in the future. Twelve couples of healthy elderly people living in a couple hood participated in an interview study. They were all 70 years and older and received no kind of professional care or social support. Open individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with the support of written vignettes. The vignettes were formed as scenarios that described three levels of caring needs where the elderly people would become ill. A qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the interviews. The findings were interpreted in one main theme: maintaining the self and being cared for with dignity to the end. The theme was built from three categories: at home as long as possible, professional care at nursing home when advanced care is needed and fear of being abandoned. The categories reflect the perception that when minimum help was needed, care and support by the partner and nursing staff were preferred. As the scenarios changed to being totally dependent on care, they preferred care in a nursing home. There was a pervading concern of the risk of not being seen as an individual person and becoming a nobody with no meaningful relations. Thus, there must be a singular goal to support old people, in all stages of their lives, through the recognition and affirmation of self, and providing care with dignity to the end.

Healthy older persons perceptions about care and the use of Assistive Technology Services (ATS)2010Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 19, nr Suppl. 1, s. 54-Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Dignity is a basic concept for quality care regardless of how and where care is given. Researchers have described the use of Assistive Technology Services (ATS) in order to promote quality care and support of older persons. However, in perceptions of the use of ATS there are values imbedded that only to limited extent are studied. The aim of this study was therefore to describe healthy older persons' perception about care and the use of ATS.Methods and Materials: Qualitative research interviews were conducted with twelve healthy older couples living in their own homes. All participants were 70 years of age or older and received no professional care or social support. Open, individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the support of written vignettes where three levels of care needs were described. A qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the interviews. Results: Regardless of whether participants were discussing quality care in general or ATS supported care, they were convinced that the best place to receive care was the home. Values associated with the use of ATS in care were closely connected to the ability of being in control of the care situation. ATS as a tool to facilitate care was perceived as an asset as long as the couples were in control of their care situation. Hesitation in their abilities to use ATS increased if they lacked a partner and their cognitive impairment increased. Regardless of other factors, dignity is highly valued, and has greater importance when other values like autonomy and independence are reduced. Conclusion: These findings highlight older persons' values about quality care and the use of ATS in care and should be taken into consideration when planning care of older persons, and implementing new technology related to their care. It is necessary that politicians and care planners explore various options to deliver the best care, as perceived by older persons.

Professional caregivers' perceptions on how persons with mild dementia might experience the usage of a digital photo diary2012Ingår i: Open Nursing Journal, E-ISSN 1874-4346, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 20-29Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Cognitive impairments influence the possibility of persons with dementia to remember daily events and maintain a sense of self. In order to address these problems a digital photo diary was developed to capture information about events in daily life. The device consisted of a wearable digital camera, smart phone with Global Positioning System (GPS) and a home memory station with computer for uploading the photographs and touch screen. The aim of this study was to describe professional caregiver's perceptions on how persons with mild dementia might experience the usage of this digital photo diary from both a situation when wearing the camera and a situation when viewing the uploaded photos, through a questionnaire with 408 respondents. In order to catch the professional caregivers' perceptions a questionnaire with the semantic differential technique was used and the main question was "How do you think Hilda (the fictive person in the questionnaire) feels when she is using the digital photo diary?". The factor analysis revealed three factors; Sense of autonomy, Sense of self-esteem and Sense of trust. An interesting conclusion that can be drawn is that professional caregivers had an overall positive view of the usage of digital photo diary as supporting autonomy for persons with mild dementia. The meaningfulness of each situation when wearing the camera and viewing the uploaded pictures to be used in two different situations and a part of an integrated assistive device has to be considered separately. Individual needs and desires of the person who is living with dementia and the context of each individual has to be reflected on and taken into account before implementing assistive digital devices as a tool in care.

'Relatives are a resource, but...': registered nurses' views and experiences of relatives of residents in nursing homes2003Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 12, nr 3, s. 431-41Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Registered Nurses (RNs) working in nursing homes in Sweden have obligations towards the residents' relatives, besides the care of residents. Relatives' involvement and satisfaction with the care partly depend on their contacts and communication with the staff. This study aimed to explore and describe RNs' views and experiences of relatives of residents who live in nursing homes. Open interviews were conducted with 19 RNs at three nursing homes. The verbatim-transcribed interviews were subjected to qualitative content analysis. Relatives were seen as a resource (with some restrictions) and nice, although demanding. The RNs saw relatives as part of their work--a part that could be time-consuming and had low priority. Interviewees noticed a difference between young and old relatives, and between female and male relatives. A large proportion of accounts could be related to issues about communication and interpersonal relationships with relatives. Building a trusting relationship with relatives may result in them being involved in residents' care and thus giving the nurses time rather than consuming time.

Staff activities and behaviour are the source of many feelings: relatives' interactions and relationships with staff in nursing homes2001Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 10, nr 3, s. 380-388Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Family members do not give up their involvement in the life of their older relatives when they move to an institution. Relatives feel that it is they who take the initiative to establish a working relationship with the staff at the nursing home. Relatives want more spontaneous information from staff, particularly about residents' daily lives, and there is a need for relatives to have opportunities to talk with staff under relaxed conditions. Staff behaviour and activities towards residents and relatives are a source of many feelings for relatives. Relatives' understandings of the challenges faced by staff are not communicated to staff, nor are positive or negative experiences explicitly passed on to staff.

    A caring relationship with persons who have cancer2009Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 65, nr 6, s. 1300-1308Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aim. This paper is a report of a study conducted to elucidate the meaning of a caring relationship with people with cancer.Background. A caring relationship becomes the most important focus of caregiving when treatment of the body has reached the limits where cure is no longer expected. Caring as perceived by people with cancer involves nurses having professional attitudes and skills in order to provide good care, including emotional and practical support.Methods. A phenomenological hermeneutic approach influenced by Ricoeur was used. Eight nurses working in an oncology unit in Iran were interviewed in 2007 about their experiences of caring relationships with people who have cancer.Findings. The findings were interpreted as getting involved in a mutual/demanding close relationship. Closeness demanded nurses to be present, to listen to patients, and to be compassionate. Closeness was also mutual and characterized both caregiving and receiving new insights into values in the nurses' own lives. The close relationship was at times frustrating when they were faced with situations that they could not handle and were out of their control.Conclusion. Closeness is an important foundation for caring, and acquires a special dimension in the care of people with cancer and their relatives. It derives from the personal and professional experiences of nurses in their own life stories. Nursing education should include a reflective approach in order to develop caring skills in oncology nursing that are not merely attuned to medical care.

Caring for dying people: Attitudes among Iranian and Swedish nursing students2010Ingår i: Indian Journal of Palliative Care, ISSN 0973-1075, E-ISSN 1998-3735, Vol. 16, nr 3, s. 147-153Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To compare the attitudes of Iranian and Swedish nursing students toward caring for dying persons. Materials and Methods: Their attitudes were measured with the Frommelt′s Attitude Toward Caring of the Dying and the Death Attitude Profile Revised. Results: The results indicated that the participating Iranian students were more afraid of death and less likely to give care to dying persons than the Swedish participants. Conclusion: It is suggested that theoretical education should be individualized and culturally sensitive in order to positively influence the students′ attitudes, and promote professional development.

    Abstract [en]

Objective: Our world is rapidly becoming a global community, which creates a need to further understand the universal phenomena of death and professional caring for dying persons This study thus was conducted to describe the meaning of nurses' experiences of caring for dying people in the cultural contexts of Iran and Sweden. Materials and Methods: Using a phenomenological approach, phenomenon of caring for dying people was studied.Eight registered nurses who were working in oncology units in Tehran, Iran and eight registered nurses working in hospital and home care in North part of Sweden were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using the principles of phenomenological hermeneutics. Results: The findings were formulated based on two themes included: (1) "Sharing space and time to be lost", and (2) "Caring is a learning process Conclusions: The results showed that being with dying people raise an ethical demand that calls for personal and professional response, regardless of sex, culture or context The physical and organizational context must be supportive and enable nurses to stand up to the demands of close relationships Specific units and teamwork across various personnel seem to be a solution that is missing in Iran.

    Abstract [en]

Most people need to be cared for at the end of their lives by professionals. This study aimed to elucidate the meaning of nurses' experiences of caring for dying persons at home and in a special unit in a hospital. Four registered nurses working in private homes and 4 registered nurses working in a specific unit in a hospital setting were interviewed. The study was planned and carried out with a phenomenological hermeneutic approach. A naive reading guided a structural analysis, which resulted in 3 main themes: meeting patients and family members as unique persons, learning in a challenging environment, and gaining personal strength. The interpreted comprehensive understanding conveyed a meaning that caring for families with a member awaiting the end of life created a situation where the presence of an inevitable death demanded nurses to create close relationships with each unique person involved.

Outcomes of individualized interventions in patients with severe eating difficulties1997Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research, ISSN 1054-7738, E-ISSN 1552-3799, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 25-44Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this case study is to describe the outcomes of individualized interventions for patients with severe eating difficulties. The participants were 15 patients who had severe eating difficulties following a stroke or brain tumor and were receiving oral feeding or tube feeding. Interventions focused on training functions needed for eating, activities in eating, and discussions with the patient. Improvements were especially noted in eating activities, and some improvements were noted in oral movements and nutritional status. Before the interventions, none of the patients ate regular food; afterward, six did, and in four patients, the feeding tube was removed. The patients said eating was easier, and they could eat in a safe way. Furthermore, they appreciated the attention to their experience during meals. Although the impairments were not always alleviated, the patients found means to cope with their eating difficulties.
