    Abstract [en]

    In recent years increased interest in cooperative arrangements, such as partnering, has been noticeable in the construction industry in many countries. To facilitate cooperative relationships many aspects of the traditional procurement procedures need to be changed. The research presented in this paper offers an analysis that compares empirically observed partnering procurement procedures with conceptual prescriptions provided by a transaction cost economics framework. The empirical illustration shows that the case client has reduced the focus on price and authority and instead facilitated a relationship based on trust and cooperation, through procurement procedures involving joint specification, limited bid invitation, bid evaluation based on soft parameters, joint selection of subcontractors, standard contracts coupled with relational norms, usage of collaborative tools, and contractor self-control. The procurement procedures chosen result in a governance form rather similar to the one prescribed by the conceptual model. Furthermore, the project participants are satisfied with the project result and also consider the procurement procedures performed suitable. Hence, the results provide both theoretical and empirical support to the implementation of partnering procurement procedures in construction projects characterized by high complexity and uncertainty

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to report on research into investigating ways in which construction clients can overcome barriers to partnering through the adoption of purposeful procurement procedures within an overall project management context. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected through interviews, document analysis, surveys and workshops as part of a longitudinal case study using an action-research approach. Findings - Analysis reveals how the early involvement of partners, selected for their long-term perspective and willingness to use collaborative working arrangements, can help to overcome cultural and organizational barriers. Research limitations/implications - The research results are based on empirical study for which reasonable generalisations could be made, albeit cautiously. Clients' implementation of partnering requires an appropriate use of a broad range of suitable procurement procedures that are quite different from more commonly used procedures. Hence, clients need to reassess their procurement procedures and tailor them to different project situations. Additionally, a long-term perspective is crucial in order to facilitate continual improvement over time. Originality/value - The case study data support the analysis of how utilised procurement procedures affect project results.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to identify critical barriers to partnering, as perceived by construction clients, and the specific measures that are taken to overcome them during implementation. Design/methodology/approach - Empirical data were collected through a survey study of 87 professional construction clients in Sweden. Findings - Clients regard the most critical barriers as those attributable to cultural and organisational aspects. The analysis also shows that clients' perceptions of these barriers do not, in fact, affect their procurement procedures. Two-thirds of clients in the survey wish to increase cooperation with actors in the belief that it will favour project success. Their intention does not have any bearing on their procurement and project management procedures, which are still aligned to competitive bidding. Two potential reasons for this inconsistency are discussed: clients may be unaware of how their procurement procedures affect cooperation, and/or the individual decision maker may not have strong enough incentives to start using new and less familiar procurement procedures even though they are potentially more suitable than traditional procedures. Research limitations/implications - The quantitative data are limited to clients' perceptions of barriers to partnering; a contractor perspective is not included in the survey. Practical implications - The research results can serve as an alert for construction clients that their procurement procedures need to be adapted if they want to achieve the move towards increased cooperation that they say they do. Originality/value - This paper offers a unique analysis of the correlations between desired outcome in the form of increased cooperation, and actual behaviour in the form of procurement procedures.

    I denna artikel beskrivs hur ERP-system fungerar och en översättningsprocess identifieras. Tre forskningsfrågor har formulerats: § hur kan en översättningsprocess se ut? § vilka feltolkningar kan förekomma i denna översättningsprocess?§ vilka problem kan dessa feltolkningar leda till för ett företag?Med hjälp av tidigare författares idéer så formuleras och definieras begrepp som data, information och kommunikation på ett sätt som är fruktbart för att beskriva ERP-systemets funktion. Ett antal problem som uppkommer vid översättningsprocessen diskuteras och förslag ges på hur funktionen hos ERP-system kan förbättras genom att hänsyn tas till de processer som rör översättningen mellan data och information.

    Entrepreneurship education - does it matter?2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper addresses an answer to the question: does entrepreneurial education lead to establishment of new firms?. The research in the paper was based on a survey with a questionnaire. The respondent sample was former students at Luleå University of Technology) and the questionnaire was sent to two different groups of respondents, a Respond group (who had passed an entrepreneurial education) and a Control group (who had not passed an entrepreneurial education). The respondents had the same educational background unless the entrepreneurial education. In addition to the survey three (short) telephone interviews were performed. The paper shows that individuals attending entrepreneurial education are more prone to start firms, to start several firms and to create larger firms, compared to the Control group. The telephone interviews show in addition to this that there is an entrepreneurial thinking amongst the persons interviewed. To sum up: the answer on the question “does entrepreneurial education lead to the establishment of new firms?” – can out of the presented results be formulated as yes!

The respondents had the same educational background aside from the entrepreneurship education. In addition to the survey three (short) telephone interviews were performed. The paper shows that individuals attending entrepreneurship education are more likely to establish firms, to establish several firms and to create larger firms, compared to the Control group. To sum up the answer to the research question based on results is that entrepreneurship education does indeed lead to the establishment of new firms.

    Is business logic a barrier to new firms?1999Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Business logic consists of unwritten rules, which set up a framework for companies' mode of action and possibilities for custom-oriented actions, compare Sloan Jr. (1990). This means that it is important for managers of small businesses among other things to understand business logic to be able to run profitable firms in a given sector. It is important to understand business logic either to adapt to it or to break with it, thereby creating "something new". We can demonstrate that there are different ways of tackling business logic, for it is possible to "go with" or "go against" the valid rules of conduct in a sector. This distinction makes it possible to identify conformists, innovators and losers, who all tackle business logic in different ways. How business logic is tackled is of great importance to companies' development and survival. The business leader must therefore correctly understand and tackle the rules of conduct existing in business, otherwise the firm's survival is at risk. In the paper I will discuss the necessity for leaders of new firms to understand and tackle the business logic in a "correct way". The empirical base is three longitudinal case studies.

    Denna avhandling behandlar kundageranden, det vill säga sådana aktiviteter som används för att skapa och bygga upp nya, eller för att underhålla redan existerande relationer mellan små tillverkande företag och dessas kunder. Syftet är att öka förståelsen för kundageranden. Retrospektiva fallstudier användes för att generera det empiriska underlaget. Under etableringsfasen av de studerade företagens utvecklingsförlopp användes skapande och aktiva och kundageranden, vilka i stor utsträckning övergick till skapande och passiva när företagen lämnade etableringsfasen för driftsfasen. Studien visar dessutom att det är möjligt att knyta kundageranden till olika typsituationer och att kundageranden har olika struktur. Kundageranden är också beroende av konkurrenssituationen och branschlogiken. Branschlogiken kan emellertid mötas på olika sätt, eftersom det är möjligt att antingen "arbeta med" eller "mot" denna. Denna distinktion gör det möjligt att identifiera konformister, innovatörer och förlorare bland företagsledare, vilka möter branschlogiken på olika sätt och med olika framgång.

    Despite its crucial role within a research community, trustworthiness in data collecting has received surprisinglylittle scientific attention in research articles. Therefore, the overall purpose of this paper is to explore and discusstrustworthiness in collected data through both interview and questionnaire methods. The results of these methodsare reported as a methodological experiment. The answers from the questionnaires and the interviews werecompared and illustrated using a “Divergence Index,” which illustrates the coherence (trustworthiness) of the twodata-collection methods. The two data-collection methods tested in the study provided different results and hencepresent different factors of importance for SMEs. The present paper concludes that (1) there are few reflections onthe trustworthiness of collected data in prior research, and (2) the responses for two data collection methods showgreat divergence, which can have consequences on CEOs’ and other decision-makers decisions based on collecteddata.
