Some research perspectives on the Arctichildren project from a Sweidsh horizon2006Ingår i: Abstract book: ArctiChildren conference : psychosocial well-being of schoolchildren in the Barents region 28-29th of September 2006, ArctiChildren Conference , 2006, s. 14-Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

What can we do to improve our knowledge and understanding of school children health and well being? This question was raised when the ArctiChildren project started. The aim of this presentation is to share some methodological perspectives on research within schools. It is crucial to develop a number of different options of collaboration between researchers, teachers and students, as well as different possible methods. We will highlight the importance of developing collaboration between the researchers and the schools. We will also discuss projective methods, for example drawings, as one way to gain knowledge and understanding of schoolchildren's school experiences. Another method we will discuss is working on consulting basis with the staff in order to decrease bullying and harassment in school.

    Abstract [en]

This article gives an account of the research, theory and empirical findings of a research and development project lasting nearly five years which took place within the framework of the ArctiChildren Project. In terms of background, bullying is viewed from an educational and societal perspective, in which developments and trends in research are elucidated. The control documents regulating the activities of schools are accounted for and the Equality of Treatment Act is extensively dealt with. The concept of bullying is discussed under its own heading. National and international research on the effects and consequences of bullying are accounted for. The theory section concludes with a survey of various different programmes, models, plans and methods for preventing and dealing with bullying in schools. Under the headings Development Work in the ArctiChildren II Project and Research in the ArctiChildren Project, the work done in the participating schools is reported.

    Abstract [en]

Peer bullying is considered to be a great problem worldwide. In Sweden severe omissions have been noticed in politicians', school leaders' and schools' measures against harassment among students. The aim of my study by a hermeneutic approach was to describe, analyze and interpret what is expressed in the comprehensive school texts against peer bullying. How are conventions, legislation, research and the opportunity to use organizations implemented in municipality, school district and local school action plans against peer bullying? The investigated documents vary great in quality and quantity and just a few could be considered to be useful tools in the work to prevent and act against peer bullying. Conventions, legislation and the value ground of school are frequently reproduced. The connections to research in the field are almost absent. Established programs against peer bullying could be found, often instrumentally taken out of its context. The opportunity to use organizations against bullying is rarely represented. My conclusions are that the Swedish Board of Education must have better control and evaluation of the anti-harassment work in schools. Institutions for teacher training must expand its education concerning conflicts and communication. The staff in school must organize competence education in the field of peer bullying.

    Abstract [en]

Since 2004 I am involved in the EU-project The Development and Research Project of Psychosocial Well-being among Children and Youth in the Arctic. The project includes universities north of the Arctic Circle in Finland, Russia, Norway and Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. The focus is to develop a supranational network model for promoting the psycho-social wellbeing, social environment and security of school-aged children in the Barents area. Urban and rural comprehensive schools are involved and one group of interest is the ingenuous, Sámi people. One common concern in all four countries is peer bullying. As an expert in research about peer bullying my task in the project is to work with participating Swedish schools staff to develop methods preventing peer bullying as well as taking measures against peer harassment and to do research in the field of peer bullying. My research will be investigating the prevalence and nature of the problem and to evaluate the school's development of new methods. So far I have carried out a peer bullying questionnaire and work as a consultant in two schools. This presentation will be a report of my work so far.

Skolans texter mot mobbning: reella styrdokument eller hyllvärmare?2003Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this doctoral thesis is to describe, analyse and interpret what is expressed in the comprehensive school’s texts against peer bullying. Express in this study means how international conventions, laws and school documents, research in the field and organisations against peer bullying, influence the content of the school texts against peer bullying. Texts consisting of plans, program methods and models against bullying from the school boards in the municipalities of the county of Norrbotten and one school district’s and a local school’s text in every municipality are objects for the analysis. The concept of bullying is discussed and the nature of measure program and how researchers construct these is shown. The analysis and the interpretation are based on a hermeneutic approach. Theories of attribution and coping are discussed in order to explain and understand the nature and the underlying mechanisms within the victim, the perpetrator and the school system that enable bullying to occur and continue. In some municipalities, contrary to legislation, texts about bullying are missing. Deficiencies in authority control are noted. Some texts have clear connections to overall ruling documents and research in the topic and a few of them could be useful tools in the school’s preventive and proceeding mission against bullying. Just in some texts the possibility to use the organisations in society, which struggle against peer bullying, is mentioned. The texts have an instrumental and individualistic view of bullying and consist in many cases of more or less brief manuals. In order to make the school’s preventive and measure task against peer bullying more efficient development of the school staff competencies and skills is needed in the fields of psychology, sociology and special education.

    Abstract [en]

The ArctiChildren project is a Interreg III Kolarctic project with the aim to enhance the psycho-social well being among children and youth in the Arctic. Finnmarkvidda College, Alta, Lapin Ylipisto, Rovaniemi, Murmansk State Pedagogical University, Russia and Unversity of Technology, Lule, Sweden are involved in the project. My task is to work with the participant schools as a lecturer and a consultant in the discourse of peer bullying. The development part is to help the schools to establish new methods to prevent and take measures against peer bullying. The research in the field of harassments is directed to a local Swedish school. This paper reports my work in the project between 2004-2006.

Voices of Somali children in a Swedish school2005Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this paper is the way in which refugee children experience the Swedish school in which they are now enrolled. The children in this study are all aged between nine and twelve years old and are recent refugees from Somalia. They now live in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and all attend the same school - a Muslim school. In an attempt to illuminate the Somalia children's experiences, drawings combined with oral comments have been used. There are significant differences between the past educational experiences, if any, of these children and the school and wider society of which they are now part. An understanding of both previous experiences and expectations and present understandings is essential if the needs of this vulnerable group of children are to be adequately met. Data collected in this study offers a window of understanding into the ways in which these children experience school.
