Situated knovledge in the creation of sustainable technologies2003Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In today's Sweden, sustainable development is seen as both an approach and a goal with selfevident value, and participation by members of society is a necessary resource in this process. Food and meal production are as vital as sustainable development and therefore the combination of the two forms a challenging field of research

    Emphasizing technology: socio-technical implications2005Ingår i: Information Technology and People, ISSN 0959-3845, E-ISSN 1758-5813, Vol. 18, nr 4, s. 343-358Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – This article aims to focus attention on users of information technology (IT), especially mobile telephony. It focuses on what people actually say about mobile technology but also aims to pay attention to what they do not talk about, what is found in the silence, especially with new technology when much can be taken for granted. This latter is, according to Foucault, even more important to understand. Design/methodology/approach – The research draws on empirical research through 11 semi-structured interviews and interviews with five focus groups, comprising between four and eight care assistants in each group. The interviews were with three women and three men between 25-70 years old, five female public sector middle managers and care assistants from five focus groups at social services departments in the north of Sweden. A Foucauldian approach is adopted to interpret the findings and explore how their locations within the circuits of socio-technical networks engender uncertainty with mobile technology. The present spread of IT reinforces a belief that people are integrated into the circuits of socio-technical networks. Findings – The findings suggest, on the one hand, that new technologies like mobile communication can be used to organise our everyday lives, whilst, on the other, there are risks with the new technologies, which can discipline discourses. Originality/value – These issues are discussed from a sociological and informatics perspective.

Old dreams, new means: an exploration of visions and situated knowledge in information technology2007Ingår i: Gender, Work and Organization, ISSN 0968-6673, E-ISSN 1468-0432, Vol. 14, nr 4, s. 371-387Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to explore the tensions and ambivalences of new and old technology and political visions of keeping viable, quality care and services for elderly citizens through the use of new information technologies. The visions of politicians and social service managers of keeping alive the welfare state and retaining its ability to offer quality care and services for elderly citizens are compared with the experiences of female care assistants and their expectations of technology. A feminist figure — the cyborg — will be used in this exploration. We consider how care assistants are integrated in networks of socio-technical relations between humans and non-humans, and the extent to which gender or asymmetrical power relations between women and men intervene in their stories.

    The lighthouse alarm and locator trial: a pilot study2007Ingår i: Technology and Health Care, ISSN 0928-7329, E-ISSN 1878-7401, ISSN 0928-7329, Vol. 15, nr 3, s. 203-212Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

An important factor for health is the possibility to be active and mobile. To make this possible different kind of support are needed. Integrating geographical information systems technology and user experiences is important in the development of more user-friendly positioning devices. The Lighthouse Alarm and Locator trial aimed to test a new mobile alarm system with additional functionality such as positioning and monitoring of vital signs which can be used regardless of location (in hospital, at home). The system was tested by elderly persons from a pensioner organisation and home care personnel answered up on the alarms. After the tests qualitative interviews were performed with the two groups. The results showed that their experiences of the new mobile alarm system could be described in three main categories: to be supervised, to feel safe and to be mobile. These categories formed a theme: Positioning - an ethical dilemma. The clients' mobility was perceived to increase. The personnel did not think that positioning was ethical but the clients (elderly) did.

"Det beror på att man är kvinna...": gränsvandrerskor formas och formar informationsteknologi1997Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Being an archivist in our times: trying to manage long-term digital preservation2007Ingår i: International Journal of Public Information Systems, ISSN 1653-4360, Vol. 3, nr 2, s. 47-61Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Information technology offers the possibility to produce and archive more recorded information than ever before. Thus it is has become feasible to preserve and have access to information in almost unlimited amounts. In sharp contrast, the situation today suggests that societal data has become significantly less accessible than was previously the case. This is both ironic and tragic. In this paper, we recognize that the cultural heritage is at risk, given current circumstances as revealed through observation and dialogue with an archivist. While there are many projects, cultural heritage institutions, government agencies and private enterprises involved in an ambitious research agenda, the majority of these are focussed on technical solutions. In contrast, we provide an in-depth point of view of an archivist who is expected to preserve information in order to safeguard the long-term preservation of the cultural heritage. This report reveals the challenges as well as the systemic implications related to the full implementation of the Archival Information Systems guidelines, that fully involve archivists and users in systems design features and functionalities, in order to enable the advancement of long-term digital preservation.

The question of responsibility for long-term digital preservation2007Ingår i: Proceedings of the 30th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 30 / [ed] Tarja Tiainen; Hannakaisa Isomäki; Mikko Korpela; Anja Mursu; Minna-Kristiina Paakki; Samuli Pekkola, Department of Computer Sciences, University of Tampere , 2007, s. 1195-Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper intends to analyze and discuss the matter of responsibility for longterm digital preservation. The reason for this is that previous research has shown that for the moment the responsibility many times rests solely with archivists (Runardotter, 2007). This is a rather problematic scenario, considering that their professional background builds on archival theory, and that archivists are recognized as being connected with paper, or analogue, media. We thus concentrate on archivists' current situation and the impact of information technology and long-term digital preservation on the same. We start with analyzing archivists' current situation from three arenas - the local, the managerial and the national. Based on this we discuss constructions of archivists in relation to information technology, whether archivists are regarded as keepers or facilitators, and what kind of actor role archivists are assigned. Finally we discuss what the constructions imply concerning the responsibility for long-term digital preservation. We have found that archivists and national policies have a rather coherent view. The responsibility for longterm digital preservation should rest with management, and archival matters should be approached in a pro-active manner. Archival matters are a concern for the organization per se, and cooperation and coordination of responsibility issues is necessary. Finally, archivists should be participating actors in IT and long-term digital preservation matters, and focus on facilitating access to archival material.

    The changing nature of archives - whose responsibility?2011Ingår i: Electronic Journal of e-Government, ISSN 1479-439X, E-ISSN 1479-439X, Vol. 9, nr 1, s. 68-78Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In line with the increase of e-services, many employees in the public sector get their working conditions changed. Their involvement in the building of e-government transforms their everyday work practices. A vivid example of such a transformation includes archivists and archival work. The use of information technologies produces huge amounts of digitally recorded information. Considering the laws and regulations of public and citizens' rights and obligations, this leads to an increased need for well-functioning e-archives. However, we find that there is little awareness in public organisations for how to deal with this complex and challenging issue. Rather the matter is left to the archivists alone, who have limited agency and influence to be able to deal with digital preservation to the extent needed. In this paper we analyse and discuss plans for, and layers of, responsibility for digital preservation as configured and reconfigured in archivists' stories and Swedish national policy documents. We use a model that covers three arenas: political, organizational, and practical (or individual). Our findings suggest that to conduct good governance there is a need to spread the responsibility for digital preservation and plan for cooperation, coordination, and communication around the same. This should happen in interplay between various actors which hold the practical responsibility, technological responsibility and strategic responsibility. Additionally we note that the view of archivists as keepers of information is moving towards the role of facilitators, which supports access to information rather than merely keeping it intact for future. Moreover, due to technological development's we find that issues to address in further studies are; present laws and regulations that governs archives, change of work practices and ways of dealing with digital preservation.

    Attachments to Participatory Digital Infrastructures in the Cultural Heritage Sector2016Ingår i: Science & Technology Studies, E-ISSN 2243-4690, Vol. 29, nr 4, s. 50-69, artikel-id 60223Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores knowledge infrastructures developed with the aim of opening cultural heritage institutions for public access and involvement. We concentrate on the new modes of knowledge production of professionals and amateur experts involved in the design and use of open archives and wiki communities as a part of transformations towards participatory digital public infrastructures. Ideas of crowdsourcing, policies of open data and engagements in community-based cultural heritage influence participants’ visions of future ways of generating, sharing and maintaining their knowledge. The paper identifies how the concept of attachments may help us analytically to understand the dynamics of multiple situated knowledges that are played out when people embrace digital technologies and open-data policies to connect past, present and future orientation of cultural heritage engagements.
