    Abstract [en]

    The idea of a database as a central facility of a programming environment is explored, taking the Ada program Library as a starting point. The database used is based on a node model similar to the one proposed in the CAIS standard (KIT/KITIA 1984). The paper suggests an expansion of the scope of the program library into the area of configuration and version management in an environment with several ungoing projects sharing software objects. The authors furthermore present a technique for the manipulation of the relationships in a relational algebra inspired way - providing some of the powerful capabilities of the relational approach within the context of node models

The abstract takes the Ada program library as a starting point: an Ada Library will constitute an essential part of an Ada programming environment, by acting as a repository for software associated data, collected at least during the development phase.

    mMOD: the multicast Media-on-Demand system1997Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents the multicast Media-onDemand system, mMOD, which is an on-demand system designed for recording and playback of not only audio and video but also other media that are being multicast on the Internet/MBone today. The system allows for users to request playback of recorded sessions containing MBone audio, video, whiteboard, NetTextEditor, mWeb (a distributed HTML presentation system) or any other UDP-multicast distributed session. It also allows for random access within these recordings. The system include a Web-interface for starting and controlling running sessions. To compensate for jitter and out-of-order packets, sessions distributed in RTP-format (RFC1889), can be reconstructed with new time-stamps.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a framework for bringing the MBone and the World-Wide web closer together by introducing real-time distribution of HTML-pages and synchronization of WWW-browsers. This framework will enable distributed presentations of WWW-material using the mWeb application. Distribution is done using two new protocols, scalable reliable real-time transport protocol-SRRTP and scalable reliable file distribution protocol-SRFDP. Synchronization is achieved using the WebDesk control bus, which allows for scalable messaging in large groups of programs and hosts. This paper also presents how the mWeb application can be used for programmed presentations resulting in a television-like Web-TV. The mWeb framework also includes support for creating HTML-slides and the usage of semantic remote-pointers.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents an easy-to-use service creation platform for realization of applications handling real-time streams and data. This platform, called WebDesk, is implemented using the platform independent Java language. WebDesk includes an application-level network layer, called the Tunable Multicast Platform - /TMP which is presented, as well as a couple of applications exemplifying the usage of /TMP; the audio- and whiteboard-agents, and the mWeb-application. The mWeb is an application for scalable distribution of HTML-files and synchronization of web browsers.

    As more and more applications on the Internet become network aware the need and possibility to remotely control them becomes larger. This paper presents a framework for control and management of distributed applications and components. This is done using IP-multicast and an agent based application architecture. The target of the framework is to allow for resource discovery of both controllable elements and available control points in the these elements as well as real-time control. All this is done in scalable and secure way based on IP-multicast and asymmetric cryptography. The presented framework is also independent of the underlying transport mechanism to allow for flexibility and easy deployment. The framework bandwidth usage and introduced control delay is presented. Details on the reference implementation of the framework and example usage scenarios where the framework is used to create bandwidth adaptive applications and better group awareness is also presented.     This paper presents a system, named mTunnel, for application level tunnelling of IP-multicast traffic in a lightweight manner, where the end-user is responsible for deciding which MBone-sessions and which IP-multicast groups to tunnel. mTunnel is primarily designed for easy deployment and easy-to-manage tunnelling. Information about currently tunnelled sessions and control of mTunnel is provided through a Web-interface. To save bandwidth, tunnelled streams can be transcoded on the media level and traffic sent through the tunnel can be compressed by grouping several packets together and using statistical compression. The overall bandwidth reduction achieved, without modifying the media itself, has been measured to be between 5% and 14%, depending on the traffic and media type.

Therefore it runs as an user application and does not need access to restricted system resources. Information about currently tunneled sessions and control of mTunnel is provided through a Web-interface. To allow the user to easily start tunneling of announced MBone-sessions, mTunnel listens for announcements and presents this information through the Web-interface. To save bandwidth, tunneled streams can be translated in four ways: audio streams can be recoded to an encoding that requires lower bandwidth, several audio streams can be mixed together, streams can be switched based on activity in another stream and streams can be scaled by dropping a certain percent of the traffic.

    A central issue within any distributed computer environment is how to control and manage running applications. This paper presents an implementation of a framework for control and management of distributed applications and components using IP-multicast. The framework allows for easy and scalable control of single applications, groups of applications or parts of applications using a new agent-based architecture. Messaging is done using the control bus and the scalable reliable real-time transfer protocol for reliable distribution of data. The paper presents how this framework is integrated into Java-based applications and how developers specify access points. The paper also presents an application called multicast Manager, mManager, a Java implementation that provides a user interface to the framework. The mManager allows administrators to get an overview of currently running applications and if necessary control these applications. The paper presents example usage scenarios where the framework is used to create bandwidth-adaptive applications and better group awareness

    This paper presents the mStar environment, which creates an environment for truly scalable distributed teamwork It can be and is being used on a daily basis for electronic meetings, distributed electronic education and daily work It creates a new teamwork environment which allows users to collaborate even if they are not present at the same physical location. The mStar environment includes: the multicast WhiteBoard - mWB, which allows for collaborative reviewing of text and images; mChat, which allows for text based group chat; mVote, which allows for distributed voting and mWeb for shared WWW objects. These are all desktop and IP-multicast based and symmetric. The mStar environment also includes mMOD, which is a VCR-like tool for recording and playback of teamwork sessions, and mTunnel, which is an application for handling IP-multicast traffic on narrow links in the network (such as ISDN/modem) and network segments that does not support IP multicast. It allows for scaling and transforming of the network based data in various ways.

    In this paper, we outline the next major evolution of the Internet architecture, where support for mobility is not the exception but the typical case. We show which parts of the Internet architecture needs to be extended, how they interact, and why they are needed. We point out the suitability of especially license free radio access equipment not only technically, but as a well harmonizing piece in the non-centralized and distributed way that Internet grows. We show that a wired Internet supporting mobility drastically changes the market situation in the mobile and wireless sector, possibly to a level where special mobile operators are not needed. We show that this leads to a situation where wireless and mobile access is just as inexpensive as its wired counterpart

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis deals with the design and construction of System Development Environments, that is the use of computers to make software intensive development work more efficient and predictable. The results are centered around the construction of such a development environment. A major theme and contribution is in extending the support provided by such environments from single user scenarios to large projects involving coordinated teams of developers. The thesis consists of seven parts, and starts out with a database oriented view of the problem. The basic idea is that all data objects created during the life of a project should be collected in a database, that also represents the various dependencies and relationships between the objects. 'Me state of a project is then defined in terms of those data, and their evolution corresponds to the evolution of the project. Automation is achieved by a rich number of surrounding tools which have access to this database. The first paper describes the design of this database by generalizing and extending the role of the Ado program library. The main contribution is in the benefits then achieved in terms of automatic data collection and consistency management. Another important result is the basic mechanisms for support of version handling. Several following papers show how to extend existing results into explicit support for programming-in-the-large, in contrast to the single person and local context support that has long dominated the thinking. This also leads to new results in supporting teams of programmers, with the problem of managing parallel change and continuous reintegration of results. The importance of several levels of abstraction and interactive data navigation support is discussed, and solutions are described. The problem of keeping data from different development phases consistent is identified, and solution principles are developed. Besides extending environments functionality towards larger projects. the thesis provides new results in how to architect those environments internally. A central concept is integration, that is the coordination between different tools to make them cooperate towards a common goal. This stands, however, often in conflict with other requirements, such as subsystem separation and autonomy. Several approaches to handle this dilemma are described. A widely accepted definition and analysis of the concept of integration is also presented. The final part, which is the most extensive, generalizes the experiences of the project in the light of a broad survey of other results. It provides an extensive overview of problem statements, solution techniques, and technology important to the construction of system development environments. The most important direction for the future is in further support for work in distributed teams. The areas of computer supported cooperative work, distributed systems, process modelling, workflow management. and broadband communications will be merged into new innovative approaches. The future development environment will a) to a large extent be an interperson communication environment; b) generalize so that most of it can be applied not only to system development, but to all situations where people work together in projects.

    Undertaking the transition to Ada today will to most of us not mean using a full APSE, (DOD80, BUX80), tailored for this purpose. Instead, this transition must be made by using an existing environment, incrementally integrating its proven tools and concepts in the realm of Ada. This paper describes one effort taking this approach, where the UNIX revision control tool RCS, (TIC85), is integrated with an Ada program library, using UNIX style library interface.

    Many of the visions of new usages of telecommunications have been bound to the concept of multimedia, a maybe overloaded word which at a user level seems to denote a desire to utilize richer ways of interacting with terminals. Examples include teleconferencing, distance work, distance education, distance consultancy, distant information access, etc. That is, most of what we do today, but independent of physical proximity. Many technical challenges remain, and one is the design of the global network platform that is to enable those services. We discuss what is special to multimedia communications, derive a number of requirements based on a model of typical services and applications, and propose a new higher level of support to enable the efficient production of such systems

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper I will point out a number of very serious principal objections on the idea of a Mobile Internet, and why it will not work. At least not as currently planned. Then, I will show how some of the objections - the most serious ones - can be solved by taking a radically different path to the future. A path that is so different that most people hesitate to think about it since it may mean that the role of mobile operators disappears. The resulting project, called The RadioSphere, is run at the Centre for Distance-spanning Technology, CDT, in Sweden.When discussing concrete examples and general market situations I will use Sweden because of its very high penetration of broadband Internet to homes, PC's & mobile phones. It therefore has especially good prerequisites for pioneering the RadioSphere approach.

Several educational projects, spanning from secondary school courses to company internal training, have deployed the mStar environment. This paper reports on experiences gained over a year of practice at the Luleå University of Technology and the Centre for distance-spanning Technology. The paper presents the methodology and technology used, while recognizing usage scenarios such as preparation of presentation material, distributed presentations, asynchronous playback of recorded and edited material, and virtual meetings for educational support.

    Robust audio transport using mAudio1999Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    This report gives an overview of how to achieve robust transport of real-time audio streams over lossy Internet connections. Due to congestion and jitter, packet delay and loss are incurred on these audio streams, resulting in distortion. The losses can be repaired using receiver-only, sender-initiated or receiver-initiated techniques. Depending on the actual network condition, an optimal technique can be selected using adaptive behavior in the applications. Studies have shown that losses up to 20% can be effectively repaired using fairly simple techniques. The report also gives initial results from subjectively evaluating audio quality and presents an research prototype called mAudio that has been used to experiment with many of the loss recovery techniques mentioned in this report.

    Luleå University of Technology has for the last few years deployed a net-based learning environment, mStar, to distribute courses to students independent of time and geographic distance. The mStar enviroment gives remotely attending students equal possibilities as traditionally attending students to take an active part of a course, as well as enhancing the learning experience for all students. This is made possible through a novel combination of IP-multicast technology and the WWW. This paper reports on experiences gained over a few years of practice and depicts a vision of the next generation of the mStar environment.

    CRES: a Competitive Reactive Eco-System Agent Architecture1998Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents CRES, a learning reactive agent architecture for managing limited resources. CRES achieves complicated behavior with simple components, minimizes the need for explicit instructions, and can handle learning without the need for complicated reasoning or the need for each agent to know the state of the entire system. CRES consists of two main components: the reactive agents and the environment. The agents learn by feeding on previous agent generations, and compete to create an emergent behavior. A TV-planner agent has been developed as a proof-of concept for the CRES architecture. It consists of a Java applet that interacts with a user, and a database that stores TV show data, user data, and agent data.
