    Abstract [en]

    In a world were data / network infrastructures grows by the day, it is not unfamiliar for tools that streamline the work and provides a great scalability is put into production. In this paper I will describe one of these solutions called ACI (Application Centric The infrastructure). Cisco ACI is possible thanks to a combination of different components that interact with dedicated hard / software, in this paper the fundamentals behind these different components will be described what ACI is and how it works. This will be compared to a traditional data solution implemented by myself. For four weeks, I worked at Axians IT in Solna researching automation / streamlining solutions and what pros / cons they have on real IT companies and data centers. During these four weeks I worked parallel to my research conducting an implementation of a data solution to the company EEHunddagis to give them their own production environment and then compare my hand configured solution with an automation solution and what pros / cons they both bring with them Automation is something that has risen up in the later years and is still on the rise. I will therefore in this paper explain why these types of solutions are necessary and who could use them in their own network environment.

    In todays society we become more and more dependent on the technology we develop, so it is of greater importance that we always have access to the information we need to do our daily tasks. It is more pressing than ever that the developed systems should work well and that you should have quick response times for everything to flow as smooth as possible and if there would be a critical system crash, the information should not be completely lost. Therefore, it has become more popular to go from, having personal servers to use more and more applications and information in the so-called "cloud". That´s why it is becoming increasingly important to keep track of some of the major cloud service providers and how to use them to archive a better business. This report will be about how a work was done at TeamNorrs request to make a comparison between Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services. It will also review the response times to some of the worlds data centers with a starting point from TeamNorrs headquarters in Umeå. It also describe how you can put up your own environment to test Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services, and how to do a so-called "Site to Cloud" solution with a Virtual Private Network tunnel in Microsoft Azure, where it will also show you how you can create an MSSQL backup in the cloud. Then discusses the pros and cons of the work done and what improvements could be relevant for the future.

    Abstract [en]

    Nordsken is a game festival that shows the game and geek hobby to the public. Visitors can join in on tournaments and can try a large variety of computer and board games. Besides this, Nordsken invites different companies and lecturers who tell and show the best from the game and geek hobby.600 participants gathered at Nordsken 2013 and over 1500 visitors came during these 3 days to play games and hangout with likeminded.As being responsible for Nordsken’s network, we had as a task to set up, configure and monitor the network during the entire event and act as support when needed.Ahead of the event a plan was introduced, which involved going through old documentation, buying a new server, renting switches and deployment of these devices. After a logical topology of the network was created, we began to configure all switches, wireless access points and the server.The network was split into three layers, core, distribution and access. The switches within each layer were configured depending on its location and connection. VLAN’s were created and configured into different sections based on the placement of the tables.On the server, we installed two virtual machines with Ubuntu 12.04, one which included all the services and another which included all the management tools that were necessary. The services provided were DHCP for every VLAN, NAT for the Management VLAN and some firewall functionality. The tools that were used were Adiscon LogAnalyzer, FTP, Ubiquity Unifi Controller Software and Cacti with both the plug-ins, Thold and Monitor. Guides for installing and configuring these services are included in this thesis.All in all the event was a success when it comes to planning, installing, managing, and to take it down. The only big problem that occurred was that the wireless network didn´t function as well as we had hoped. We managed to solve the problem somewhat and the event went on as planned.The software that was installed and used on the server was chosen based on our past encounter with them during different labs at the university.

    Abstract [en]

    Nordsken is an annual event that focuses on games, technology, comic books, and in short, everything related to so called “nerd culture”. It is open to both participants who play in tournaments in different tabletop games and also LAN computer gaming.We were tasked with planning and establishing a network solution for the entire event. Both for the LAN and everything surrounding it, but also a wireless network covering the entire area of the event. The event itself takes place in Scandic Hotel Skellefteå’s locales and covers 3 floors. During the event we ran maintenance of the network and support for any of the participants who might need it.The months beforehand were spent planning and structuring the network and the services needed. A grand total of 31 switches and 17 accesspoints were used. 2 servers which of one ran several virtualized machines were also established to provide the services and tools needed to maintain and manage the network.In conclusion the running of the network services during the event went smoothly. We had a few minor issues concerning missing cables and connections for a couple of the participants. However none of these issues couldn’t be solved in a timely manner. The wireless network however did not work as expected and we had problems getting an acceptable speed and roaming function throughout the event. The first day the wireless network faced major issues due to the automatic power and channel configurations of the accesspoints. We have included several conclusions as to why the wifi did not work as expected and also a couple of solutions which may be implemented to improve the quality of the wireless network.

    This project explores the possibility and implements an integration between OP5 Monitor and Nilex Plus, and was performed during a five week period at Data Ductus in Uppsala.The reason for the project was to find out if there is any possibility to create a connection between OP5 Monitor and Nilex Plus, to create tickets in Nilex from alarms in OP5 Monitor and to acknowledge alarms in OP5 Monitor directly from Nilex Plus.OP5 Monitor is an evolvement of Nagios Core created by OP5 AB, a Swedish based company that also was the only provider of the commercial support for Nagios during a period of time.Nilex Plus is an ITIL compatible software for ticketmanagement, incident and problemreporting created by Nilex AB.The report contains details of our learning period with OP5 Monitor and NilexPlus and the results of this project is an almost complete integration in the test environment and also a documentation on how to perform the new integration between OP5 Monitor and NilexPlus.

    This report contains measurements and analyses of the municipal wireless network at two businesses parks in Piteå, Furunäset and Acusticum. Piteå Näringsfastigheter AB (PNF), thecompany I made this report for, wanted to know about the current wireless coverage offered by the municipal network at the previously mentioned businesses parks that they take care of. I was also tasked to come up with ideas how you could improve them. In the existing municipal network at Furunäset there were seven different accesspoints and nine more at Acusticum.The focus of this report will be on what can be improved or changed but also a potential expansion of the current networks.     Abstract [en]

    This thesis project lasted during five weeks at SSAB in Luleå and dealt with two tasks. The first task was to research the best possible way to synchronize network equipment and monitoring platforms at SSAB. The second task was to examine the requirements and arrangements for the monitoring platform SCOM.There are three main protocols used to achieve time synchronization: NTP, SNTP and PTP. The most common techniques to synchronize the time is either through the Internet, GPS, radio communications, or manual time setting. After collecting data from two different time sources (local server with attached GPS receiver, and externally via the Internet), and comparing the results, the equipment was configured.The results showed that the most appropriate solution would be to synchronize the equipment to the local server using the NTP protocol. For future implementations new and more powerful hardware with support for redundancy is proposed.SCOM is a modular monitoring and management platform developed by Microsoft. SCOM uses the SNMP protocol for communication between SCOM and various networking equipment.A survey on SCOM consisting of discussions with staff at SSAB regarding requests and comments on the design was conducted. Based upon the information gathered a design idea was conceived. It was made up of logical network equipment diagrams and geographical maps of the plant areas.These maps and diagrams were then integrated into SCOM to create a system which was easy to navigate and understand.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to compare two security softwares, Packetfence and Cisco Identity Services Engin. The goal was to provide an understanding of how this kind of software can be implemented in a network of different sizes and also an insight into how this can reduce the administrative burden.

    This type of system can also be used to centrally control access to a company's resources and can secure different types of devices and applications. An installation was completed to detect differences between the systems, then they were configured as similarly as possible to detect if there were any differences in this part of the software.

    The report summarizes basic information about the services that the systems contain and also describes the steps required to perform configuration. The report presents the methodology the group worked for these weeks to achieve a satisfactory result for the client.

    The result presents the work the group completed during the study and shows how the various systems can be configured to achieve a secure network for a company. The discussion states that it is important to be flexible in its planning to work around problems that arise.

    Abstract [en]

    This report examines an implementation of Zabbix network management system in an enterprise network environment. This implementation includes the main application Zabbix, but also MediaWiki and Ubuntu. Installation and configuration of the management solution is explained and examined, the result of which is a system managing both ICMP and SNMP requests. Zabbix is compared to Nimsoft CA and the comparison is beneficial for Zabbix. Further development of the management solution is suggested among which is interface management and traffic measurement.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper has covered some security aspects to consider when deploying 6LoWPAN in wireless sensor networks. The issues mentioned in this paper revolve around encryption and authentication methods as well as key distribution mechanism. Security features at the link and network layer have been evaluated and the conclusion is that both do provide with good security but it is not always sufficient. For example, hop-by-hop security at the link layer could be really strong if you are in control of all links between source and destination, however, when transmitting data over the Internet this is rarely the case. As an alternative the network layer provide with an end-to-end solution with a compressed version of IPsec, but due to insufficient models for key distribution the keys are required to be distributed manually. This means that there is no support for asymmetric keys in a wireless sensor network at the time, but further research might solve these issues.

    This report describes a simple implementation of an IT-strategy in a small company involving the areas of mobility, security and backup. As well as keeping in mind what kind of needs the company has in terms of number of employees and getting a cost-effective and user friendly solution. The goal is to implement a way to access an office computer securely from any network. This was achieved by evaluating different solutions that uses VPN, RPD and VNC technologies. Improving the overall security on different devices and planning a redundant backup solution that uses encryption standards such as AES.

    Abstract [en]

    I have performed my thesis project at ATEA in Lulea, for Coop Norrbotten. The purpose of this project was to design, implement and document a new and enhanced network solution for use in Coop Norrbotten's grocery stores, and to construct a detailed rollout guide to handle the implementation procedure. Senior consultant Leif Häggström from ATEA supervised the project.I was given two primary issues to address in the new network design; the new solution should be more secure and more scalable than the old design. With my new design I also tried to address some other issues such as efficiency, performance and resiliency. The network equipment that was initially available for the new design was: • 1x Cisco 1811 Integrated Services Router• 1x 3Com 3226 L3 access switch• 1x HP Procurve 1800 PoE switch• 2x Wireless Access Points from Trapeze (Juniper)During the course of the project, it was decided that the 3Com 3226 platform should be replaced, due to its age and limited functionality. The old switch was replaced by a Cisco 2960-S switch.During the first week of the project I gathered information about the functionality of the network equipment, and drew up a theoretical design for the new network. The second week was used for documenting the existing topology and the physical conditions for the implementation procedure. During the second week, I also started designing a Zone-Based Policy Firewall solution for the network. The third week was allocated to setting up and testing the new network model in a lab environment. At this point I also started working on the implementation guide. The beginning of the fourth week was used for further testing, this was also when the decision to replace the 3Com switch was made. The second half of the fourth week was used to preconfigure the new Cisco switch and the shop's router. The implementation took place during the fifth and last week of the project. The results of the project were: the physical implementation of the new network model, and the rollout guide to handle the implementation procedure.One of the conclusions i reached after the project was finished, was that it is difficult to construct a simple and modern network solution without access to modern equipment. It is possible to construct a quasi-modern solution based on older equipment, but the solution becomes increasingly complex as the designer must find many workarounds for solving the problems caused by the older network equipment.

    Abstract [en]

    I have worked on my examination project at Turnhill AB [1], Skellefteå. The purpose of the project was to document the network, to tidy up among the network cables in the network room, and to come up with two solutions for a VPN-solution.In the documenting phase I first encountered problems when trying to figure out which devices were plugged in to which ports of the firewall and switch. However, this was solved with time and patience. To simplify this process for future changes, I made two documents, one of which explains what devices are plugged in to which ports on the firewall/switch, and the other explains where the cables plugged in to the patch panel are plugged in to the firewall/switch. With future updates of these lists when changes are made, there should not be any trouble keeping the network neat and tidy.In my research for suitable VPN-solutions I stumbled upon the freeware Logmein Hamachi, which satisfied the needs by far. In consultation with my supervisor we chose to implement it, which did not cause any trouble. For this solution to be available when I am not longer accessible, I made an installation guide so that the employees of the company can use it on their own.When I was to tidy up among the cables I replaced some of the poor cables and shortened some with the help of cable ties, and I also used those to fix the cables in a neat fashion.My conclusions while working on this project were that if Turnhill were to expand their network they will need more switches. Also, if expansion is relevant there should be a reorganization of the cables in the firewall/switch ports, since the network does not look organized at this moment.

    Abstract [en]

    In this report we describe the various 802.11 standards, the hardware has been built and which are current, but also the future. We also describe the encryption has been built and which are relevant and should be used. We have performed measurements of Skellefteå on their own networks to find out about the security of the wireless environment can be improved and to do this, we used two different Wifi software that can scan the wireless networks. We conclude that there are networks that should be improved in terms of encryption and also that it is time to replace the hardware with newer providing enhanced capabilities.

    Abstract [en]

    Sherpas needed a new platform to monitor machines on their network. The platform they wanted to use was Nagios Core to monitor resources like CPU, disk, memory, bandwidth, webservers and SQL servers. The monitor solution also needed a simple way to add new hosts. Addons for a dashboard and graphs was also needed for a better overview. The monitor platform was installed on a test environment with a stationary computer, laptop with 3 virtual machines and a switch. Nagios Core was installed on the stationary computer. NRPE was used as the agent and was installed on all Linux servers. Nagios plugins was also installed to be able to monitor the required resources. Monitoring of Windows machines was done with WMI. To monitor switches and routers a plugin was created with Bash. To simplify configuration for new hosts, host groups were used. All host groups are linked to a service and when new hosts are created the required services are monitored by selecting all the host groups which the services are linked to. This decreased the time required for configuring new hosts. The solution was only done with a very small environment and the plugin that was created could contain a few bugs that can be detected in the future. The program also used a programming language not suited for the situation and should be changed in the future. No focus on security was done and is something that should be implemented in the future.

    Lundqvist Trävaru AB is a company striving towards the future, their plan is to get there with both a new IT-system but also an improved IT infrastructure, at the current time both those parts are missing. In order to mend the latter of these problems we have the report in this document.Writing this report was mainly done by applying a previously dictated work process to all of the subjects regarded in the company report. The result from the work is this report, which help in explaining the work process as well as introducing the different topics of consideration regarding the IT infrastructure.This report serve the purpose of presenting a common solution covering all of the IT infrastructure related problems as well as presenting the thoughts and work behind the company report. All in all, this report is the result of around four to five weeks of me doing research, comparisons and writing.

    Abstract [sv]

    Brinkens nätverk har växt över tid genom att flera separata aktörer varit delaktiga i utvecklandet samt underhållet av nätverket. Det faktum att flera entreprenörer har genomfört olika förändringar enligt egna preferenser i Brinkens elnischer, har lett till den situation som återfinns idag. Istället för att på ett enhetligt sätt dokumentera och strukturera befintliga elnischer, har unika lösningar för samma problem tillämpats i de olika skåpen.

    I 18 av 20 elnischer återfinns dessutom otidsenlig utrustning i form av Token Ring, detta ökar risken för högre felfrekvens och är kostsamt i jämförelse med modern utrustning. Upprätthållandet av god säkerhet har ignorerats till den grad att fyra skåp på Brinken saknar all form av säkerhet. Säkerhet är en väldigt viktig beståndsdel som med alla medel bör hållas intakt för att undvika obehörig åtkomst och sabotage.  

     

    I dagsläget saknar stora delar av nätverket redundans i form av alternativa vägar. Enligt nuvarande lösning återfinns det skåp som vid fel orsakar förlorad uppkoppling för både direkt anslutna kontor men även kontor som är anslutna till andra skåp. Det innebär att ett omotiverat stort antal kontor påverkas trots att skåpet de är anslutna till fungerar enligt önskat.

     

    Det arbete som genomförts har innefattat en genomgående dokumentation av hela Brinkens nätverk. Enligt den analys som vi utfört har en rad problem med varierande risknivå detekterats och rangordnats utifrån dess kritiska inverkan på nätverket. Utifrån det material som samlats in genom förstudien har åtgärdsförslag tagits fram för samtliga problem.

     

    Nedanstående grafer visar fördelningen av problemens risknivå samt hur de kommer utvecklas om ingen åtgärd utförs. Ett kritiskt problem upptäcktes i fyra elnischer och allvarliga problem uppdagades vid 65 tillfällen.

    Virtualization and monitoring are two rapidly growing areas in the IT industry. This report deals with the monitoring of database servers using two different tools, op5 Monitor and VMware vCenter.The Swedish company op5 AB has developed op5 Monitor. This tool is now used by several major companies to monitor their network elements, Data Ductus is one of them. Ductus is at the forefront when it comes to system monitoring but are in need to expand the monitoring of their database servers. The task to find a solution that can be implemented in their production environment was therefore adopted by us.A thorough overview is composed of the theoretical parts involved in the monitoring and virtualization with VMware ESXi. A solution to monitor Microsofts database server in op5 is developed and tested, the solution is made as general as possible in order for it to easily be implemented in a production environment. A comparison between physical and virtual monitoring is reviewed and the perl program check mssql health is used to monitor interesting metrics in a database server.Sources of errors, improvements and future work are discussed and it is concluded that op5 is the superior surveillance tool compared to VMware vCenter.

    Abstract

    This thesis has been performed at the company Axe'L Data Service. My assignment was to implement a wireless network for the company GUNSHILL ​​AB.

    GUNSHILL ​​AB, works with milk- and meat production, and use a robotic milking system called Lely. This system is controlled through application software installed on Android or iPhone platforms, specifically mobile phones. The wireless network implemented at GUNSHILL AB, has about tree hundred fifty square meter Wi-Fi coverage.

    In addition to the wireless system, we deployed a monitoring system as a tool for measuring performance of the access points and monitoring them.

    This thesis summarizes and goes through the entire process of the wireless- and monitoring system deployment, and performs analysis of the IEEE 802.11n technology based on the technology primarily in Ubiquiti features for 802.11n devices.

    The conclusion of this thesis is that the project meets the requirements of GUNSHILL ​​AB as expected. The implemented wireless network system covers three hundred fifty square meters and delivers a wireless Internet connection with a speed of 6.4 Mbit/s, which resembles, approximately 90.6 % of the initial speed provided by the ISP (7 Mbit/s).

    Abstract [en]

    My degree project is divided in two parts, both were made for Nordea's internet support within their implementation & customer support. The first part was about problem solving and troubleshooting with customers and their environment and also how to connect with them on their level to be able to guide them over the phone. The second part was independent and was purely knowledge about IT and computers, it was created over three weeks in February 2014 and was based on wishes from both 1st and 2nd line officers. The result is these two educational pieces containing about three hours worth of lessons and over 80 power point slides that will be used for educating the department.

    Under a period of five weeks I’ve been working on my thesis at Vattenfall Vattenkraft AB in Sundsvall. My task was to replace old switches with new ones at their operations centres located in Bispgården, Storuman and Vuollerim. This task is complicated by the fact that the network can’t have any downtime at all. The task also involved configuration for the new switches. That particular part was the one taking most of my time. It’s also one of the most important because you do not want a misconfigured switch in a network with this kind of important traffic. The switch of switches was very successful. No problems at all during the switch occurred. Two weeks later no incidents had been reported.

    This thesis project was performed at Data Ductus in Uppsala over a phase of five weeks. The project consisted mainly of two phases. The first was to analyze how the ERP-system FAS affected SQL Server performance. Phase two was to build a new server environment with Citrix for FAS.FAS is an application package used by the Church of Sweden and its many congregations in a Citrix environment. The current deployed solution, does not work quite optimal: automatic updates are not installed correctly, users experience problems with certain functions in the programs, etc. This generates a lot of support issues and irritation for the users. Furthermore the existing solution on isolated SQL instances, resulting in that it requires an unnecessary number of SQL licenses.This project is about testing and evaluating the possibility of setting up these installations in different ways than today. Primarily there is a wish to solve the problems that exist in the present installation, and secondly to reduce the cost of SQL licenses.
