    Abstract [sv]

Gaming motivations and gaming disorder symptoms: A systematic review and meta-analysis2022Inngår i: Journal of Behavioral Addictions, ISSN 2062-5871, E-ISSN 2063-5303, Vol. 11, nr 3, s. 667-688Artikkel, forskningsoversikt (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background and aims: The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the available literature on the relationship between gaming motivations and gaming disorder symptoms. Specifically, to (1) explore what gaming motivation questionnaires and classifications are used in studies on gaming disorder symptoms and (2) investigate the relationship between motivational factors and symptoms of gaming disorder. Method: An electronic database search was conducted via EBSCO (MEDLINE and PsycINFO) and the Web of Science Core Collection. All studies using validated measurements on gaming disorder symptoms and gaming motivations and available correlation coefficients of the relationship between gaming disorder and gaming motivations were included. The meta-analyses were conducted using a random-effects model. Results: In total, 49 studies (k = 58 independent sub-samples), including 51,440 participants, out of which 46 studies (k = 55 sub-samples, n = 49,192 participants) provided data for the meta-analysis. The synthesis identified fourteen different gaming motivation instruments, seven unique motivation models, and 26 motivational factors. The meta-analysis showed statistically significant associations between gaming disorder symptoms and 23 out of 26 motivational factors, with the majority of the pooled mean effect sizes ranging from small to moderate. Moreover, large heterogeneity was observed, and the calculated prediction intervals indicated substantial variation in effects across populations and settings. Motivations related to emotional escape were robustly associated with gaming disorder symptoms. Discussion and conclusions: The present meta-analysis reinforces the importance of motivational factors in understanding problematic gaming behavior. The analysis showed significant heterogeneity in most outcomes, warranting further investigation.

Comparing psychopathological symptoms, life satisfaction, and personality traits between the WHO and APA frameworks of gaming disorder symptoms: A psychometric investigation2024Inngår i: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, ISSN 0036-5564, E-ISSN 1467-9450Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: The inclusion of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) in the fifth revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) by the American Psychiatric Association and Gaming Disorder in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) by the World Health Organization requires consistent psychological measures for reliable estimates. The current study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the Gaming Disorder Test (GDT), the Ten-Item Internet Gaming Disorder Test (IGDT-10), and the Five-Item Gaming Disorder Test (GDT-5) and to compare the WHO and the APA frameworks of gaming disorder symptoms in terms of psychopathological symptoms, life satisfaction, and personality traits.

    Methods: A sample of 723 Swedish gamers was recruited (29.8% women, 68.3% men, 1.9% other, Mage = 29.50 years, SD = 8.91).

Results: The results indicated notable differences regarding the estimated possible risk groups between the two frameworks. However, the association between gaming disorder symptoms and personality traits, life satisfaction, and psychopathological symptoms appeared consistent across the two frameworks. The results showed excellent psychometric properties in support of the one-factor model of the GDT, IGDT-10, and GDT-5, including good reliability estimates (McDonald's omega) and evidence of construct validity. Additionally, the results demonstrated full gender and age measurement invariance of the GDT, IGDT-10, and GDT-5, indicating that gaming disorder symptoms are measured equally across the subgroups.

Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that the IGDT-10, GDT-5, and GDT are appropriate measures for assessing gaming disorder symptoms and facilitating future research in Sweden.

The psychophysiological influence of exertion and affect on sport-specific cognitive and physical performance2022Inngår i: Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, ISSN 1440-2440, E-ISSN 1878-1861, Vol. 25, nr 9, s. 764-769Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives:  The purpose of the present study was to examine differences in cognitive and physical performance, affective states, perceived exertion, and physiological responses between trials with cognitive, physical, or combined cognitive and physical load.

    Design:  Randomised cross-over trial.

Methods:  Highly trained competitive orienteers (n = 15 men; n = 10 women) completed three randomised trials comprised of: (1) sport-specific cognitive tests; (2) 35-minute cycling time trial; and (3) combined sport-specific cognitive tests and 35-minute cycling time trial. Measures taken during the trials recorded affective states, perceived exertion, heart rate, blood lactate, cycling watts, as well as working memory, updating, planning and decision making.

Results:  No significant differences in cognitive performance accuracy were observed within or across trials although reaction times improved within trials and were fastest in the combined trial. Blood lactate, heart rate, perceived exertion, negative affective states, and watts were highest in the physical trial.

Conclusions:  The combined load of undertaking sport-specific cognitive tests and a cycling time trial did not influence cognitive performance accuracy. Athletes produced greater watts when completing the physical task independently compared with the combined trial, however psychophysiological responses were worse. Further investigation is warranted to determine whether athletes' attentional focus underpins psychophysiological responses to dual-task sport performance.

Computerized Cognitive Interventions for Adults With ADHD: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis2023Inngår i: Neuropsychology, ISSN 0894-4105, E-ISSN 1931-1559, Vol. 37, nr 5, s. 519-530Artikkel, forskningsoversikt (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Treatments for adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are understudied, compared to children and adolescents with the same condition. In this systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis, we aim to evaluate the outcomes of computerized cognitive training (CCT) interventions in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including adults with ADHD.

Method: Cognitive outcomes and ADHD symptom severity were analyzed separately. In addition, the Cattell–Horn–Carroll (CHC) theory of cognitive abilities was used to categorize outcome variables into subdomains, which were analyzed separately in a subsequent analysis.

Results: The results revealed a small positive change in overall cognitive functioning, a measure of all cognitive outcomes in each study, for individuals who took part in CCT compared to controls (k = 9, Hedge’s g = 0.235, 95% CI [0.002, 0.467], p = 0.048, τ2 = 0.000, I2 = 0.000). However, neither symptom severity nor specific cognitive outcomes (executive functioning, cognitive speed, or working memory) showed a significant improvement.

Conclusions: We analyzed the risk of bias in the chosen studies and discuss the findings in terms of effect size. It is concluded that CCT has a small positive effect in adults with ADHD. Due to the lack of heterogeneity in intervention designs across the included studies, increased heterogeneity in future studies could help inform clinicians about the aspects of CCT, such as training type and length, that are most beneficial for this group.

Evaluating reflective practice groups in a mental health context: Swedish translation and psychometric evaluation of the clinical supervision evaluation questionnaire2019Inngår i: BMC Nursing, ISSN 1472-6955, E-ISSN 1472-6955, Vol. 18, artikkel-id 2Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Implementation of reflective practice groups in psychiatric and mental health contexts might improve the quality of care through promoting self-awareness, clinical insight, and facilitating stress management and team building. There is a need for valid and reliable instruments to test the outcomes of reflective practice groups in the mental health context. This study aimed to test the validity and reliability of the Swedish version of the Clinical Supervision Evaluation Questionnaire.

    Methods

The instrument was translated from English to Swedish using a translation and back-translation procedure. Data for the calculation of content validity was collected from an expert group. Data for the reliability analysis was collected from rehabilitation assistants and ward managers participating in reflective practice groups (n = 20). Content validity was measured by computing a content validity index. Construct validity was assessed by calculating the corrected item-total correlation statistics. Reliability was evaluated by analysing the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, the intraclass correlation coefficient and inter-item correlations.

    Results

The content validity index for the scale as a whole was 0.94. Item-total correlations ranged between 0.23 and 0.81, and deletion of an item did not notably improve Cronbach’s alpha. Cronbach’s alpha for the scale was 0.89. The intraclass correlation coefficient for single measures was 0.35. The mean inter-item correlation was .37.

    Conclusion

The Swedish version of the Supervision Evaluation Questionnaire has a degree of reliability and validity that is comparable to the original version in English, indicating that it can be used as an assessment of reflective practice groups in the mental health context.

Mental fatigue, cognitive performance and autonomic response following sustained mental activity in clinical burnout2023Inngår i: Biological Psychology, ISSN 0301-0511, E-ISSN 1873-6246, Vol. 183, artikkel-id 108661Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Objective

To investigate the effects of sustained mental activity on perceptions of mental fatigue, cognitive performance, and autonomic response in patients with clinical burnout as compared to a healthy control group.

    Methods

Patients with clinical burnout (n = 30) and healthy control participants (n = 30) completed a 3-hour test session, in which they were administered a set of cognitive tests before and after an effortful cognitive task with concurrent sound exposure. Perceptions of mental fatigue and task demands (mental effort and concentration difficulties) were assessed repeatedly over the course of the test session. Heart rate variability was recorded to index autonomic response.

    Results

In comparison with controls, perceived mental fatigue increased earlier in the session for the clinical burnout group and did not recover following a short rest period. Throughout the session, patients rated the tasks as more demanding and showed less improvement on measures of attention and processing speed, inhibition and working memory. While autonomic responses were initially comparable, there was a unique decrease in high-frequency heart rate variability in the clinical burnout group after extended testing and exposure.

    Conclusion

Patients with clinical burnout are affected differently than healthy controls by sustained mental activity, as reflected by ratings of perceived mental fatigue, aspects of cognitive performance and autonomic response. Further investigation into the role of autonomic regulation in relation to cognitive symptoms in clinical burnout is warranted.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Development of motor imagery in school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder: a longitudinal study2022Inngår i: Brain Sciences, ISSN 2076-3425, E-ISSN 2076-3425, Vol. 12, nr 10, artikkel-id 1307Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a diagnosis based on social communication deficits and prevalence of repetitive stereotyped behaviors, but sensorimotor disturbances are commonly exhibited. This longitudinal study aimed at exploring the development of the ability to form mental motor representations (motor imagery; MI) in 14 children with ASD and 17 typically developing (TD) children at 7, 8 and 9 years of age. MI was investigated using a hand laterality paradigm from which response times (RT) and error rates were extracted and compared with performance on a visually based mental rotation task (VI). A criterion task was used to ensure that the children could perform the task. The results showed wide performance variability in the ASD group with more failures than TD in the MI criterion task, especially at 7 years. For all age levels and both the MI and VI tasks, the error rates were significantly higher and RTs longer for the ASD group compared with TD. Signs of MI strategies were however noted in the ASD group as biomechanically constrained orientations had longer RTs than less constrained orientations, a RT pattern that differed from the VI task. The presence of MI in the ASD group was most evident at 9 years, but the error rates remained high at all ages, both in the MI and VI task. In comparison, the TD group showed stable MI strategies at all ages. These findings indicate that MI ability is delayed and/or impaired in children with ASD which may be related to difficulties performing required mental rotations.

Reconsidering item response categories in gaming disorder symptoms measurement2023Inngår i: Journal of Behavioral Addictions, ISSN 2062-5871, E-ISSN 2063-5303, Vol. 12, nr 4, s. 873-877Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Gaming disorder (GD) screening often involves self-report survey measures to detect the presence of symptoms. Studies have shown that gamers' responses vary greatly across survey items. Some symptoms, such as preoccupation and tolerance, are frequently reported by highly engaged but non-problematic gamers, and therefore these symptoms are thought to lack specificity and are suggested to be less important in classification decisions. We argue that the influence of response categories (e.g., dichotomous responses, such as "yes" or "no" or frequency categories, such as "rarely" and "often") on item responses has been relatively underexplored despite potentially contributing significantly to the psychometric performance of items and scales. In short, the type of item response may be just as important to symptom reporting as the content of survey questions. We propose some practical alternatives to currently used item categories across GD tools. Research should examine the performance of different response categories, including whether certain response categories aid respondents' comprehension and insight, and better capture pathological behaviours and harms.

    Abstract [sv]

Are physical activity and sedentary behavior related to depression?2019Inngår i: Cogent Psychology, E-ISSN 2331-1908, Vol. 6, nr 1, artikkel-id 1633810Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Depression is an increasing public health concern with rising prevalence. Nevertheless, far from everyone seeks help or receives adequate treatment. Although psychotherapy and antidepressants still constitute the bulk of treatments offered, recent research suggests that physical activity (PA) can be a powerful adjunct therapy while sedentary behavior (SB) is a definite risk factor for developing depression. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between PA, SB and depressive symptoms in a population (n = 962) of applicants for an online treatment study. This study hypothesised that there will be; (1) a positive relationship between SB and depressive symptoms, and (2) a negative relationship between PA and depressive symptoms. In addition we investigated whether the combination of a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity increased the risk for depressive symptoms. Finally, we also examined whether gender, age, marital status, educational level, or medication affected the relationship between PA, SB, and depressive symptoms. The results showed a positive correlation between SB and depression. There was, however, no statistically significant support for a negative relation between PA and depressive symptoms. Even though no conclusions about causality can be drawn, our results suggest that high SB, being a woman, being young, not being in a stable relationship, and current or previous medication are risk factors for depression. To be able to determine the causal direction, that is, whether high SB increases the risk for depressive symptoms, or if depressive symptoms increase the likelihood of high SB, further research is needed.

Samband och könsskillnader i självskattade sömnsvårigheter, stress och minnessvårigheter hos universitetsstudenter2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Sleep difficulties are a widespread problem that is often caused by high stress and can have negative consequences for many functions such as memory difficulties. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate gender differences between self-rated sleep difficulties, perceived stress and everyday life memory difficulties in university students. Furthermore, associations betweenself-rated sleep difficulties, stress and memory difficulties were investigated. To answer the research questions, three validated questionnaires were used regarding sleep difficulties measured with Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), perceived stress measured with Percevied Stress Scale (PSS) and memory difficulties measured with Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ). The survey was completed by 99 students at Luleå University of Technology, of which 88 answers (50 women and 38 men) were included in the analysis. The results showed that there were differences between women and men regarding perceived stress, where women reported higher levels of stress. Furthermore, the results showed positive associations between self-reported sleep difficulties and stress, as well as stress and self-reported memory difficulties. In a multiple regression analysis, perceived stress was the only factor associated with memory difficulties. In conclusion, the study showed that women experienced more stress than men, that stress and sleep are strongly correlated, and that stress was the only factor associated with memory difficulties in everyday life in university students.

Treating perfectionism via the Internet: a randomized controlled trial comparing cognitive behavior therapy to unified protocol2024Inngår i: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, ISSN 1650-6073, E-ISSN 1651-2316, Vol. 53, nr 3, s. 324-350Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Perfectionism can be problematic when your self-worth is dependent on achievements and leads to inflexible standards, cognitive biases, and rigid behaviors. Cognitive behavior therapy for perfectionism is shown to be effective, including for targeting psychiatric symptoms and when delivered via the Internet (iCBT-P). However, few studies have compared it to an active comparator. The current study randomly assigned 138 participants seeking help for perfectionism to iCBT-P or Internet-based Unified Protocol (iUP). Both treatments provided guidance on demand from a therapist and were eight weeks in duration. The results indicated large within-group effects of Cohen’s d 2.03 (iCBT) and 2.51 (iUP) on the Clinical Perfectionism Questionnaire at post-treatment, and maintained effects at 6- and 12-month follow-up, but no between-group difference (β = 0.02, SE = 1.04, p =.98). Secondary outcomes of depression, anxiety, quality of life, self-compassion, procrastination, and stress ranged from small to large, with no differences between the conditions. Both treatments were deemed credible, relevant, of high quality, and well-adhered by the participants. Further research needs to be conducted, but the findings could indicate a lack of specificity, perhaps suggesting there is no need to differentiate between different treatments that are transdiagnostic in nature.

General psychiatric inpatient care for persons with anorexia nervosa—an integrative literature review protocol2023Inngår i: BMJ Open, E-ISSN 2044-6055, Vol. 13, nr 9, artikkel-id e076437Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction People diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are offered or compelled to undergo various treatments and therapies. In Sweden, the lack of highly specialised eating disorder services means that people with anorexia nervosa might be cared for in general psychiatric wards. However, there has been limited research attention paid to how this specific context might benefit or harm persons with anorexia nervosa. There is also limited evidence regarding which form of care is most effective in anorexia nervosa and which type of treatment is optimal in general psychiatric inpatient care. Our intention is to highlight personal and professional perspectives of care for patients with anorexia nervosa in this context, with a focus on person-centred care, gender and power. This protocol describes an integrative literature review aiming to synthesise existing knowledge on general psychiatric inpatient care for persons with anorexia nervosa.

Methods and analysis The study will be an integrative literature review following Whittemore and Knafl. We will search the academic databases PubMed, CINAHL and PsycInfo in accordance with a specific search strategy determined in collaboration with a librarian with expertise on systematic reviews. Data will be analysed using a constant comparison method. Persons with their own experience of anorexia nervosa in general psychiatric inpatient care will be involved as coresearchers.

Ethics and dissemination As this is a literature review, formal ethical review is not required. The findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publication and presented at conferences related to this field.

Amendments If we need to amend this protocol, we will give the date of each amendment, describe the change and give the rationale in this section.

Saliva based diagnostic methodologies for a fast track detection of autism spectrum disorder: A mini-review2023Inngår i: Frontiers in Neuroscience, ISSN 1662-4548, E-ISSN 1662-453X, Vol. 16, artikkel-id 893251Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is considered a complicated neurodevelopment disorder with rising prevalence globally. ASD is characterized by a series of events including varying degrees of defects in communication, learning, and social interaction which is accompanied by stereotypical behavioral patterns. Despite extensive research, the current diagnosis for ASD is complex and almost solely based on the behavioral assessments of the suspected individuals. The multifactorial etiopathology of this disease along with the diversity of symptoms among different individuals adds to the current intricacies for accurate prognosis of ASD. Hence, there exists a dire need for biologically relevant biomarkers for an early diagnosis and for tracking the efficacy of therapeutic interventions. Until recently, among various biofluids, saliva has gained increasing interest for biomarker identification, the advantages include the non-invasive nature and ease of sample handling. This mini-review aims to provide a succinct summary of recent literature on saliva-based diagnostic modalities for ASD, examine various studies that highlight the potential use of proteomic and/or RNA-based biomarkers. Finally, some conclusive perspectives of using the salivary system for ASD mechanistic details and diagnosis are also discussed.

    Abstract [sv]

    Men who self-harm—A scoping review of a complex phenomenon2022Inngår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 78, nr 5, s. 1187-1211Artikkel, forskningsoversikt (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: To understand and care for men who self-harm, it is important that healthcare professionals have understanding of how and why men self-harm, men's experiences of self-harm and what can be done to hinder or prevent self-harm.

Aims: The aim of this study was to synthesize the existing knowledge on men who self-harm, with a special emphasis on background, self-harming methods, experiences and reported therapeutic interventions and/or care approaches.

Design: Scoping review of internationally published and grey literature, based on a methodological framework by Arksey and O’Malley.

Data sources: Systematic electronic database searches were conducted in CINAHL, MEDLINE (Ovid) and PsycINFO. From a total of 684 studies found, 24 studies met the inclusion criteria: full-text, published in English, peer-reviewed studies and grey literature including a focus on men who self-harm, men aged between 18 and 65 years, and published between 2010 and 2019.

Results: Men's self-harm was understood as being related to mental disorders, a means of affect regulation, a loss of self-control, and a means of interpersonal communication. Self-harm can be a positive or negative experience, and there is a wide variety in the methods that men use to self-harm: sharp objects, injection, ingestion, without aids or riskful behaviour. Few studies reported on therapeutic interventions and/or care approaches for men who self-harm.

Conclusion: Men's self-harm should be understood as a complex, socially and culturally conditioned phenomenon and studied from a multitude of perspectives.

Impact: This scoping review concludes that self-harm among men should be understood as a complex, socially and culturally conditioned phenomenon. To empower men and support their recovery from self-harm, a person-centred approach should be incorporated into research on the subject and practice.

Lobotomins okända historia: Kvinnor, barn och idioter opererades: [The unknown history of lobotomy: Women, children and idiots were lobotomized]2000Inngår i: Läkartidningen, ISSN 0023-7205, E-ISSN 1652-7518, Vol. 97, nr 30/31, s. 3395-3398Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The history of prefrontal lobotomy is an interesting example of medicine regarding as useful a treatment method which present-day consensus evaluates in a contrary fashion. A pilot study of archives from the Swedish state mental hospital Umedalen shows that the frequency of lobotomies as well as postoperative mortality were higher than what has earlier been assumed. The majority of the 704 patients who underwent lobotomy at Umedalen hospital were women. One unexpected finding concerns the numbers of mentally retarded patients and children who were subjected to lobotomy. Case records and other documents from the hospital archives indicate that the operation was performed largely for the benefit of the hospital rather than the patient, with an eye to engendering calm and order on the unruly wards.
