Public e-services from the citizens' perspective: adopting a market orientation2009Inngår i: International Journal of Public Information Systems, ISSN 1653-4360, Vol. 5, nr 2, s. 123-134Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The recently published Swedish eGovernment Action Plan stresses that "the need of the user should always be an important starting-point in the efforts made by administrations to develop eServices." But, is that the picture communicated in the action plan? This article reflects critically on the action plan from a marketing perspective. The discussion focuses on citizens as consumers of public e-services and argues that benefits from a market-oriented approach could support organizations in their development of public e-services. Developing online services based on knowledge of citizens' needs, behaviors, and attitudes presents possibilities for creating customer-oriented services that increase productivity while delivering added value for citizens.

    Abstract [en]

The supply of drinking water is a crucial and vulnerable element of the Swedish infrastructure. In the past few years it has suffered several crises due to contamination and waterborne diseases. Therefore, management of water crisis has become a highly topical issue for the country's municipalities, particularly after two recent outbreaks of cryptosporidium. This protozoan parasite is often spread through contaminated water and causes a parasitic disease that affects the intestines and typically causes an acute short-term infection. The largest known outbreak of cryptosporidium in drinking water occurred in 1993 in Milwaukee, US, where more than 400 000 people were infected. In Sweden, two large outbreaks have occurred during the past few years. The drinking water in Östersund, a mid-sized city with around 59 000 inhabitants, was infected with cryptosporidium in November 2010. The number of people infected reached approximately 27 000, and the outbreak lasted for 12 weeks. Just a few months afterwards, Skellefteå, with 71 000 inhabitants, had a similar experience. At least 20 000 people were infected in an outbreak lasting 20 weeks. This type of crisis affects many people for a long time, and effective communication, therefore, is essential to limit the impact of the crisis.

Building a public brand: the internal brand building process and the brand team2010Inngår i: Gothenburg Research Institute / [ed] Petra Adolfsson; Rolf Solli, Gothenburg Research Institute , 2010, Vol. vol. 2, s. 83-96Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

While branding strategies traditionally have been applied most extensively by profit driven businesses, brands are now also viewed as powerful tools for public organizations. More and more cities are using city branding to position themselves. A local government can for example develop city brands to attract and retain a growing number of inhabitants, businesses and visitors. Previous research shows that city brands can learn from existing knowledge in the area of corporate branding. Even though planning can be seen as one of the most important aspects in building a brand, research on internal brand building, (i.e., the activities that occur before the brand is implemented) and on the people involved in this process, is still scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore the internal corporate brand building process of a city brand and identify the brand team. An illustrative case of the internal brand building process for a city brand, which was initiated by a Swedish local government, was selected. Findings show that the three stages in the internal brand building process (i.e., brand audit, brand identity, and brand position statements) could be identified. However, results show that the repositioning of the city brand had to be done stepwise and the internal brand building process, including all three stages, was repeated already after five years. Findings indicate that internal as well as external members were included in the brand team. The Head of Development at the local government was found to be the central individual of the brand team, i.e., the brand champion.

Building a corporate brand: the internal brand building process in Swedish service firms2008Inngår i: Journal of Brand Management, ISSN 1350-231X, E-ISSN 1479-1803, Vol. 16, nr 1-2, s. 40-50Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

There is consensus that every organisation needs to develop a strong brand as part of its business strategy. It is, however, unclear how corporate brands can be effectively developed. The aim of this study is to empirically explore the internal corporate brand-building process in Swedish service firms. This process refers to activities that occur before the implementation of the brand. This is a qualitative study in which three case studies are presented and in which purposive sampling was applied. The study's aim was to find illustrative cases of firms that had recently conducted an internal, corporate brand-building process. The selected firms had initiated the process based on different circumstances (ie due to a crisis, geographical expansion or strategic repositioning). Personal interviews were used as the main data collection method. Three concurrent flows of activities, that is, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing, have been applied in the data analysis. All firms aimed to strengthen the corporate brand in their brand portfolio by reducing sub-brands, and by updating their brand identity and brand position statements. Findings show that even though the three firms had initiated the internal corporate brand-building process for different reasons, the three stages in the process, that is, brand audit, brand identity and brand position statements, could still be identified. Differences, however, occurred within the stages.

Managing retail in an omnichannel environment: Consumer behavior, trends, and challenges2017Inngår i: Creating Marketing Magic and Innovative Future Marketing Trends: Proceedings of the 2016 Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) Annual Conference / [ed] Stieler, Maximilian, Cham: Springer International Publishing , 2017, s. 243-244Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Retailers are facing major changes, including intensified competition, increased internationalization, and technological advances, which are transforming the competitive landscape at a fast pace. Simultaneously we see an emerging paradigm shift in consumers’ buying behavior. Digital devices such as smartphones and tablets allow consumers to search and shop online, irrespective of time and place and without geographical boundaries. While these devices originally were used mainly for information search, mobile purchases are becoming a natural part of many consumers’ shopping habits.

Expressing herself through brands: a comparative study of women in six Asia-Pacific nations2010Inngår i: Journal of Brand Management, ISSN 1350-231X, E-ISSN 1479-1803, Vol. 18, nr 3, s. 228-237Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Consumers express themselves through the brands they desire, purchase and consume. Self-expression, therefore, can be an important driver of consumer preferences and choices. Despite the importance, few multi-country comparative studies have examined how people use brands to express themselves, although there are indications that the importance of brands for self-expression differs across cultures. This study investigates whether female consumers, on average, in six Asia-Pacific nations differ in the extent to which they express themselves in using their favorite brand of beauty care products. We conducted an email survey, which shows that the importance of these brands as a vehicle of self-expression differs significantly across the six countries, and three clusters could be found. Women in India, China and the Philippines, on average, perceived these brands as more important for self-expression than women in Malaysia, Japan and Australia. Women in Japan and Australia, on average, perceived these brands as less important for self-expression than Malaysian women. We discuss whether economic similarities between the countries can explain these results, which could indicate a high negative correlation between brand expression and wealth. We also consider cultural differences across countries in the form of power distance and uncertainty avoidance as a possible explanation

    Unraveling Platform Strategies: A Review from an Organizational Ambidexterity Perspective2017Inngår i: Sustainability, ISSN 2071-1050, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 9, nr 5, artikkel-id 734Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Platform strategies, which highlight the interdependence in and evolution of business ecosystems, are increasingly relevant for sustainable business models in the digital era. So far, platform research has existed as a fragmented body of insights from different fields, but an integrated theoretical perspective can lead to a more coherent understanding of the research overall. Organizational ambidexterity emphasizes the balance between exploration and exploitation, which is particularly conducive to understanding the sustainability of a firm. Using an organizational ambidexterity perspective, the authors analyze five platform strategies: pricing, openness, integration, differentiation, and envelopment. This paper provides a systematic review of the theoretical and empirical studies in leading management, economics, and information systems journals from 2000 to 2016. The findings show that platform strategies can help platform owners achieve ambidexterity by domain, temporal, and organizational separation. Finally, this paper proposes an agenda for future research.

Technology-based self-service and its impact on service firm performance: a resource-based perspective2007Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Improving productivity is crucial for service firms to be competitive. To have customers perform certain tasks normally undertaken by employees is an important means to achieving this objective. With the aid of technology, the scale and scope of self-service has significantly increased in recent years. Despite the size and importance of technology-based self-service (TBSS) investments in service firms, the absence of empirical studies on TBSS and its impact on company performance has resulted in a significant gap in knowledge. The aim of this thesis therefore was to increase our understanding of this important research area. Drawing from a resource-based view, this thesis proposed a framework that shows how firm resources and capabilities are leveraged via customer performing self-service to deliver superior value to employees, customers and/or business owners. To ground the research, three Swedish TBSS case studies (i.e., SAS self- check-in, Nordea Net Bank, and ICA self-scanning) were conducted. The findings of these case studies helped further refine the framework and a more elaborate model illustrating the impact of TBSS on firm performance was proposed. To test this model, a survey was conducted to understand self-scanning system and its impact on firm performance. Questionnaires were sent to managers and employees at ICA and Coop, the two biggest food chain stores in Sweden. The results of the survey show that employee training and dynamic capabilities of the service provider are crucial to the success of self- scanning implementation. TBSS promotion was found to have no relationship with customer usage and weak relationship with accuracy of customer performing self-service. Furthermore, improved service quality, rather than reduction of labor costs, was found to be the primary value of self- scanning in Swedish retail food stores. Finally, employees and customers are positively affected by using TBSS, although the impact on financial performance is hard to pin down.

    Abstract [en]

This article introduces several new concepts that lay the conceptual foundation for thinking about next-generation marketing based on ubiquitous networks. U-commerce, orÜber-commerce, is predicated on the characteristics of network ubiquity, universality, uniqueness, and unison. It is proposed that the keys to managing network-driven firms are the concepts of u-space and attention analysis. The implications for next-generation marketing in the u-space are explored, with a research agenda identified for scholars and managerial implications recognized for practitioners

    Abstract [en]

The failure characteristics of a system may depend on the total operating time, operating time since the last repair, failure history, operating conditions or on the values of monitored variables. A reliability based approach which takes into consideration values of monitored variables is suggested for estimating the optimum maintenance (or replacement) time interval for a system or threshold values of monitored variables under the age replacement policy. The maintenance cost equation is formed on the basis of the planned and unplanned maintenance costs and the values of monitored variables. The proportional hazards model is used to identify the importance of monitored variables. The reliability function is estimated considering the values of monitored variables. A total time on test (TTT) plot based on this estimate of the reliability function is used to estimate the optimum maintenance (or replacement) time interval for a system or threshold values of monitored variables. This approach is illustrated with an example.

Managing in turbulence: an empirical study of small firms operating in a turbulent environment1998Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with how small firms, and especially their CEOs, manage their situation in times of high environmental turbulence. Eight firms have been chosen for the empirical study based on their performance and the CEO’s self-efficacy and tolerance for ambiguity. Interviews with the CEO and employees at each firm, observations, gathering of annual reports and a questionnaire are the principal means used for data collection. The results show that the CEO is very influential at all firms, regardless how the company performs. A CEO that tolerate uncertainty is better able to engage in enterprising, which seems necessary in turbulence. A CEO with high self- efficacy is generally able to control his firms destiny by having access to the appropriate resources for the task (e.g. own ability and network). However, too high self-efficacy could be a sign of dysfunctional overconfidence, where the CEO dismiss relevant information from actors around him.

Using internal contracts to promote intrapreneurship in the public school system: hopeless half-measure or promising hybrid?2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we explore the use of a novel governance form – internal contracts - in the Swedish public school system, in terms of its effect to promote intrapreneurship in the organization. We studied a public school that during the time period 2007-2010 was a test case, by performing interviews with management and staff and through a questionnaire measure entrepreneurial behaviour and other relevant aspects in this school and two control schools. The results show that the internal contract gave the school room to act entrepreneurially and that it is a promising organizational tool for renewing the public sector.

    Abstract [en]

This paper develops and tests a framework for understanding the performance of small firms operating in highly turbulent environments. Performance is conceptualized as being multidimensional, taking into account both financial and market performance. The purpose was to delineate the importance of CEO characteristics (self-efficacy, tolerance for ambiguity and need for cognition) in relation to some aspects of firm orientation (Market vs. Internal and Planning vs. Implementation). The results showed that CEO characteristics tended to have a considerable impact on firm performance and on firm orientation, while no significant relationship between firm orientation and firm performance was found.

How Women’s Economic Empowerment program affects financial literacy: A qualitative study from the Philippines2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Women’s empowerment and gender equality contribute to the achievement of a sustainable world according to United Nations and Agenda 2030. Previous research highlights the impact of microfinance program on women’s empowerment. Through a lack in previous research, the aim of this report emerged. The aim is to describe and analyse women’s experience of how a microfinance program focused on women’s economic empowerment in the Philippines affect their financial literacy and in what ways financial literacy can be related to their empowerment. The study consists of a qualitative methodology and elements of a deductive approach. The collected empirical data consist of documents, observations and interviews. The results show that, through seminars and participation, the women got increased their knowledge in economics. Women’s participation in the microfinance program also lead to empowerment. The result shows that the women bring the knowledge from the program home to their personal finances and affects the individual’s environment. The impact of the microfinance program has larger effects for many women, not only the one participating in the program. Therefore, to understand the phenomena in this study, it is necessary to include experiences from outside the microfinance program. Because on the result in this report, the suggestions for future research is to investigate the correlation between the microfinance program and women’s personal finances.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose - This article presents a content analysis of Marketing Intelligence & Planning (MIP) for the period 1990-2010. The aim was to identify key trends in the evolution of MIP. Four areas were addressed including; an analysis of the nature of authorship, identification and ranking of the most prolific authors, recognition of the most influential articles based on number of citations and an exploration of the research themes within the published articles.Design/methodology/approach - During the 21 years a total of 952 papers appeared in the journal. Of these, 856 were research articles and therefore were included in the content analysis. A coding protocol was developed, covering author demographics, citations, and research topics.Findings - The findings show a trend from single-author articles towards increased collaboration both within and across countries, and across institutions. The majority of the 24 most productive authors were UK based and accounted for 20 percent of the analysed articles. The 856 articles included in the analysis received 9,368 citations. The five most prevalent research topics during the 21-year period were: Marketing Strategy, Consumer Behaviour, Research Measurement and Metrics, Global/Export Marketing, and CRM. Different research topics emerged over the period.Originality/value - This analysis identifies key trends in the evolution of MIP. To date, there has been no historical analysis of the journal so this article provides a useful historical context and analysis for the MIP editorial team as well as other researchers and authors.

Not so sexy: Public opinion of political sex scandals as reflected in political cartoons2011Inngår i: Journal of Public Affairs, ISSN 1472-3891, E-ISSN 1479-1854, Vol. 11, nr 3, s. 137-147Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

An analysis of political cartoons of three well-known US political sex scandals is presented to examine how cartoons channel public perception in terms of the involvement of a prominent politician and the difference of opinion based on who the politician is, frame the organization of communal knowledge, and facilitate the grounds upon which some things can be said. On one side of the spectrum, theories of political cartoons presume that political cartoons reflect public attitudes about current events and that by studying cartoons surrounding a sex scandal, public attitudes toward such a scandal can be effectively understood. On the other side of the spectrum, theory argues that cartoons actually persuade and shape public attitudes, intentions, and behaviors. Three prominent former US politicians were selected for the analysis: Eliot Spitzer and the Emperor's Club Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky John Edwards and Rielle Hunter The criteria of narrative, location, binary struggle, and normative transfer were used as a framework to analyze 230 cartoons. The findings suggest that some politicians emerge relatively unscathed from scandals, others are seriously condemned, yet others are obscured or have their roles changed substantially. On the basis of the research criteria, it seems that public reactions and sentiments toward politicians' involvement in a scandal depend on what the scandal was about, where it occurred and what happened there, who the protagonists in the conflict were, and who the loser in the story was. Rising from failure, staying down, or more of the same?: An inductive study of entrepreneurial reentry2020Inngår i: Academy of Management Discoveries, ISSN 1523-2867, E-ISSN 1084-6654Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Drawing on a multi-year qualitative study, we explore the phenomenon of reentry into venturing after a failure. The primary discovery of this study is a pathway by which interactions of failure attributions and emotions lead to effective entrepreneurial reentry in the aftermath of a failure. Specifically, we discover three trajectories of reentry: separation (reentry with minimal modifications), reinforcement (no reentry), and metamorphosis (reentry with substantial modifications). We describe the differences between the trajectories and detail three dimensions of primary discovery: negative emotions are not necessarily an obstacle to reentry, as previously thought; perceived controllability is critical in explaining reentry; and the evolution of attributional/emotional responses over time as a result of the interplay between these concepts is central to explaining effective reentry.

Organisatoriska hinder och motivation i samband med införandet av tillitsbaserad styrning: En kvalitativ fallstudie inom hemtjänsten i en svensk kommun2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

TEFIS: A Single Access Point for Conducting Multifaceted Experiments on Heterogeneous Test Facilities2014Inngår i: Computer Networks, ISSN 1389-1286, E-ISSN 1872-7069, Vol. 63, s. 147-172Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A few years ago, an experimental facility composed of networking gear and simulation tools was sufficient for testing the main features of a prototype before the final product could be launched to the Internet market. This paradigm has certainly changed, but the lack of platforms enabling the realistic assessment of the different facets of a product, including cross-cutting trials across different testbeds, poses strong limitations for researchers and developers. In light of this, we present an open platform that offers a versatile combination of heterogeneous experimental facilities called “TEstbed for Future Internet Services” (TEFIS). TEFIS provides a single access point for conducting cutting-edge experiments on testbeds that supply different capabilities, including testbeds dedicated to network performance, software performance, grid computing, and living labs. We shall show that TEFIS covers the entire life-cycle of a multifaceted experiment, with the advantage that a single testrun can seamlessly execute across different experimental facilities. In order to demonstrate the potential and versatility of the TEFIS platform, we describe the deployment of four distinct experiments and provide a set of results highlighting the benefits of using TEFIS. The experiments described in this article cover: i) the experimentation with an open API called OPENER (which is an open and programmable environment for managing experimentation with SDN applications); ii) an application for skiers and tourists at the Megève ski resort in France; iii) an application that can dynamically adapt the Quality of Experience (QoE) of multimedia services for mobile users; and iv) an augmented reality workspace for remote education and learning purposes based on videoconferencing.

Academia facing small business reality: a study from the perspective of university trainees1999Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Promoting the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by means of different programs for knowledge and technology transfer from universities is common in most countries. In this paper we, building on two decades of experience from a university trainee program for smaller firms, address two questions: (1) How do SME-Trainees taking part in a specific program in Sweden perceive the value of their trainee period, and (2) how do trainees, utilising a specific list of variables, characterise their host firms. In focus are differences relating to firm size. The results indicate that trainees in micro firms are more satisfied with their trainee period than trainees in larger SMEs, which - considering that the trainees characterised these micro firms as less developed - was somewhat surprising. Utilising former trainees as initiated respondents this paper also suggests that a cut-point represented by five employees in a significant way distinguish smaller and larger SMEs.

    Abstract [sv]

Working on distance: experience from SME-trainees working with distance spanning technology2001Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on the experiences drawn from a pilot project on telecommuting, involving university trainees and smaller firms in the northernmost part of Sweden. Building on previous research in telecommuting and social integration of new co-worker into organisations, the paper addresses two main issues: (1) May utilisation of modern ICT for telecommuting be a way to overcome problems in recruiting qualified staff, and (2) what are in these cases the specific challenges prevailing for absorbing new members into an existing organisation (here a smaller firm). The results from this exploratory case study indicate support for the idea of using ICT and telecommuting as a measure to overcome recruitment problems, but also specifically pinpoint the need for both technically and socially oriented preparation and introduction.

Examine destination loyalty of first-time and repeat visitors at all-inclusive resorts2017Inngår i: International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, ISSN 0959-6119, E-ISSN 1757-1049, Vol. 29, nr 7, s. 1834-1853Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that are likely to influence the loyalty behavior of first-time and repeat visitors to all-inclusive resorts.

    Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from first-time and repeat Russian tourists to Antalya, Turkey, utilizing a self-administered survey questionnaire. A total of 339 usable responses were obtained. A structural equation modeling approach was used to test the proposed model on the first-time and repeat visitors’ samples.

    Findings

This study suggests that the effects of cognitive evaluation of the resort (service quality) channel through affective evaluation of the visitor experience (visitor satisfaction) before bolstering visitor loyalty. This study also shows that differences exist between the two groups of visitors – first time visitors value cognitive attributes more and rely more on cognitive evaluation.

    Practical implications

Destination marketers and managers need to promote all aspects and attributes of a destination among all-inclusive vacationers by creating innovative and comprehensive marketing campaign. Due to the differences between first-time and repeat visitors, it is critical to differentiate the two groups in designing targeted marketing campaign and providing targeted service/product.

    Originality value

All-inclusive resorts have attained substantial global presence and popularity over the past 40 years. However, guest satisfaction/loyalty studies in this particular context have not often been approached with the kind of statistical breadth and rigor presented herein. This study adds new information for the understanding of and marketing to the all-inclusive resort guest.

    Abstract [sv]

Swedish auditors' view of auditing: doing things right versus doing the right things2006Inngår i: The European Accounting Review, ISSN 0963-8180, E-ISSN 1468-4497, Vol. 15, nr 1, s. 89-114Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to describe and analyse the thought patterns of Swedish auditors with regard to the way in which they audit information provided by listed companies, and possible changes in their duties. Eighty-two auditors were interviewed using the repertory grid technique and open-ended interview questions. To check the stability in the thought patterns of the respondents, six retests were made and, to validate the findings, an expert panel and two reference groups consisting of auditors and other representatives of the accounting and auditing professions were consulted. Distinct patterns emerged in the mean grid of the thought patterns of all the respondents. One dimension was related to the time perspective, past versus future, and another to auditing practice. Auditors devote a relatively long time and considerable effort to objects that can be satisfactorily verified, but not to objects that they perceive as being of primary importance to investors and other stakeholders. This inconsistency in the thought patterns of the auditors is similar to the gap between auditing in practice and stakeholders' expectations of auditing, which is a phenomenon frequently found in previous research. Moreover, the auditors were very reluctant to make statements about any information except that elicited according to current practice. In addition to this traditional view, the auditors appear to be more concerned about their own situation than that of the parties they are meant to be protecting. Doing things right seems to be more important than doing the right things. That the auditors spend much time on objects that they themselves do not consider to be of primary importance for the investors and other stakeholders, and their unwillingness to change current practice is of great concern in Sweden, where there is a strong belief in self-regulation of the auditing profession.

Pre-bankrupt going concern warnings: prediction accuracy, extent and degree of wording ambiguity and phrasing patterns in Sweden2012Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – Previous research on going concern warnings has focused mainly on prediction accuracy, giving little attention to going concern warning ambiguity or treating the issue of how auditors phrase their going concern warnings in a cursory manner. This paper argues that these issues are interrelated and need to be considered jointly. The purpose of the present paper therefore is to measure auditors’ prediction accuracy, to determine how common going concern warning ambiguity is, to explore the phrasing of going concern warnings and to highlight any patterns found in this analysis. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on empirical evidence drawn from the most recent annual and audit reports of all Swedish limited companies’ that went bankrupt in 2010. The audit report sample consists of 4,718 companies, and the going concern warning sample consists of 797 companies.Findings –Consistently with previous research, the findings demonstrate that Swedish auditors issue going concern warnings only in extremis and that it is not uncommon for the going concern warnings to be phrased ambiguously. The findings also reveal that going concern warnings can be categorized as clear, medium or fuzzy with several subordinate variations within those main patterns. Originality/value – Within the relatively unexplored field of going concern warning ambiguity, this study is based on a larger sample than that of the few existing previous studies. The findings provide a fine-grained understanding of the complex phenomenon of wording ambiguity, showing that in an audit context where the phrasing of going concern warnings is elective, where most firms are small and medium-sized and where auditors are required to assess if shareholders’ equity is spent partially or in full, ambiguous going concern warnings are both frequent and varied.Key words Audit report, accuracy, bankruptcy, going concern warnings, phrasing patterns, wording ambiguity, SwedenPaper type: Research paper

Cultural Impacts on the Managing of Knowledge Sharing Processes: A Qualitative Study of Swedish Banks in Shanghai, China2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The globalization of economies and the technology development have both increased opportunities to businesses as well as challenges. Multicultural workforces and other values in the market compared with the home market lead to complexity in the management control when a business establishes abroad. Individuals’ nationalities impact their behaviors and values and it is the management’s task to coordinate the members’ activities in a way that is beneficial for the company. The banking industry is a knowledge-intensive industry, meaning the employee’s knowledge is the bank’s biggest resource. To create organizational knowledge, it is important that the knowledge is shared within the company. Effective knowledge sharing is hard to accomplish in a multicultural company since it is depending on communication between the employees which can be aggravated by cultural differences. The more distant the involved national cultures are, the harder it will be to achieve intercultural communication.

The Swedish culture is very different from the Chinese culture. China’s economy has developed fast since it opened up to the world market in the 70’s. Today, several Swedish companies are established in China. The purpose with this study is to examine how the Chinese culture impacts Swedish knowledge-intensive companies established in China and to increase the understanding on how to overcome the cultural barriers that are affecting the managing of knowledge sharing. Cultural clashes can imply risk to a company if they affect the efficiency of the internal processes and must therefore be avoided. This field study was conducted in Shanghai, China at Swedish banks to see how they worked with the cultural differences.

Interviews were made with staff of both Chinese and Nordic heritages to see how the cultural differences impacted their operations. The results showed that there are several cultural clashes that affect effective knowledge sharing processes within the companies. The management tries to implement the Swedish way of working in the branches, but the Chinese culture has a strong impact on the communication channels and it creates confusions and misunderstanding between the Nordic and Chinese employees. Cultural understanding and adjustment to the cultural conditions have been shown from earlier researches to reduce cultural clashes. This study supports those arguments by showing that a higher level of intercultural communication leads to increasing cultural understanding and a quicker adjustment to the organization’s way of working. The study also showed that the national culture’s impact on individual behavior was stronger to individuals that have had less foreign exchanges. The study contributes with suggestions of enlightening cultural differences more by formal meetings to increase the cultural understanding within the companies, as well as intercultural team works over department units should be implemented.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this report is to explore the socio-techno-economic key factors and activities of relevance for the development of a sustainable testbed federation in Europe. In this process there is a need of incorporating a business model framework for enabling decision making in value creation and value capturing. This study shows that the federation has great opportunities to reach a broad market via the key partners networks. In this federation a span of testbeds are involved which provides a large knowledge and resource base. By being involved in the federation, partners and customers get access to a great variety of technical competences as well as testing resources for remote tests. Through the use of the resources offered in the federation, customers can build their own virtual testbed which makes it easier and cheaper for them to perform tests before their technology enters the market.
