Webbaserat gränssnitt till en ASN1 Common-Decoder2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

When you, as a company, works alongside other companies such as Telia, where information about calls, text messages and internetsurf are saved as files and gets encrypted according to security policies, it’s important that you have a good and trustworthy software that can decode these files. Transforming(decoding) them back to their original state, so that bills etc. can be properly produced.

This project has used a decoder that does exactly that as a starting point, and a web-based graphical interface(GUI) has been created with the decoder as a base. This GUI can deocde these particual files and it also allows the user to search for specific information in those files after they have been decoded. It’s a very simple and user friendly construction that will simplify future processes. Instead of using a command-line(CMD), there is now a GUI where you can do exactly what you can in CMD, only simpler and faster.

Critical Infrastructure Network DDoS Defense, via Cognitive Learning2017Inngår i: / [ed] Pietro Manzoni, Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain, Piscataway, NJ: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Some public and private services are called part of the Critical Infrastructure (CI), which are considered as the most important services to protect the functioning of a society and the economy.  Many CIs provide services via the Internet and thus cyber-attacks can be performed remotely.  It is now very simple and free to find and download software, which automates performing cyber-attacks.  A recent example is that two teenagers, with close to no security knowledge, created an on-line business. They would run cyber-attacks (online booter service called vDOS, as reported by Brian Krebs) for a small fee. They reportedly earned over 600,000 USD in a short period of time by conducting a large number of automated DDoS cyber-attacks. Then Krebs was retaliated against, and the highest DDoS attack bandwidth ever recorded, 620 Gbps, was launched against Krebs. In this paper we show how cognitive learning can be used to significantly mitigate any effects of DDoS network attacks, against the critical infrastructure.

Elimination of DoS UDP Reflection Amplification Bandwidth Attacks, Protecting TCP Services2015Inngår i: Future Network Systems and Security: First International Conference, FNSS 2015, Paris, France, June 11-13, 2015, Proceedings / [ed] Robin Doss; Selwyn Piramuthu; Wei Zhou, Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag, 2015, s. 1-15Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we propose a solution to eliminate a popular type of Denial of Service (DoS) attack, which is a DoS amplification attack. Note that a DoS is a subset of of DDoS. Our solution protects servers running any number of TCP services. This paper is focused on the most popular type of DoS amplification attack, which uses the UDP protocol. Via DoS UDP amplification attacks, an attacker can send a 1 Gbps traffic stream to reflectors. The reflectors will then send up 556 times that amount (amplified traffic) to the victim’s server. So just ten PCs, each sending 10Mbps, can send 55 Gbps indirectly, via reflectors, to a victim’s server. Very few ISP customers have 55 Gpbs provisioned. Expensive and complex solutions exist. However our elimination techniques can be implemented very quickly, easily and at an extremely low cost.

Network DDoS Layer 3/4/7 Mitigation via Dynamic Web Redirection2016Inngår i: Future Network Systems and Security: Second International Conference, FNSS 2016, Paris, France, November 23-25, 2016, Proceedings / [ed] Robin Doss, Selwyn Piramuthu, Wei Zhou, New York: Springer, 2016, s. 111-125Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Layer 3, 4 and 7 DDoS attacks are common and very difficult to defend against. The academic community has published hundreds of well thought out algorithms, which require changes in computer networking equipment, to better detect and mitigate these attacks. The problem with these solutions, is that they require computer networking manufacturers to make changes to their hardware and/or software. On the other hand, with our solution, absolutely no hardware or software changes are required. We only require the use of BGP4 Flow-Spec, which has already been widely deployed many years ago. Further the customers’ own ISP does not require Flow-Spec. Our algorithm protects groups of over sixty-five thousand different customers, via the aggregation into one very small Flow-Spec rule. In this paper, we propose our novel, low cost and efficient solution, to both detect and greatly mitigate any and all types of L347 DDoS Web attacks.

Network Security of Internet Services: Eliminate DDoS Reflection Amplification Attacks2015Inngår i: Journal of Internet Services and Information Security (JISIS), ISSN 2182-2069, E-ISSN 2182-2077, Vol. 5, nr 3, s. 58-79, artikkel-id 5Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Our research problem is that there are a large number of successful network reflection DDoS attacks. Via a UDP Reflection Attack, an attacker can send just 1 Gb/s of payload to innocent servers, and it is these servers which then can send over 4,600 times the payload to the victim! There are very expensive and complex solutions in use today, however most all of these on premise solutions can be easily circumvented. The academic community has not adequately addressed this research problem. We have created a new Internet services network security surface attack mitigation methodology. Our novel design patterns will help organizations improve the price/performance of their anti-network reflection solution by 100 times, as compared to common on premise solutions. Our analysis and results confirm that our solution is viable. Our novel solution is based on stateless IP packet header filtering firewalls (which can be implemented mostly in hardware due to their simplicity). We have reduced and in some cases eliminated the need for researchers to even try and find new ways to filter the same traffic via more complex, software driven stateful solutions.

Stronger Authentication for Password Credential Internet Services2017Inngår i: Proceedings of the 2017 Third Conference on Mobile and Secure Services (MOBISECSERV) / [ed] Pascal Urien, Selwyn Piramuthu, Piscataway, NJ: IEEE conference proceedings, 2017, s. 41-45, artikkel-id 7886566Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Most Web and other on-line service providers (”Inter- net Services”) only support legacy ID (or email) and password (ID/PW) credential authentication. However, there are numerous vulnerabilities concerning ID/PW credentials. Scholars and the industry have proposed several improved security solutions, such as MFA, however most of the Internet Services have refused to adopt these solutions. Mobile phones are much more sensitive to these vulnerabilities (so this paper focuses on mobile phones). Many users take advantage of password managers, to keep track of all their Internet Service profiles. However, the Internet Service profiles found in password managers, are normally kept on the PC or mobile phone’s disk, in an encrypted form. Our first contribution is a design guideline, whereby the Internet Service profiles never need to touch the client’s disk. Most users would benefit, if they had the ability to use MFA, to login to a legacy Internet Service, which only supports ID/PW credential authentication. Our second contribution is a design guideline, whereby users can choose, for each legacy ID/PW Internet Service, which specific MFA they wish to use. We have also presenting conceptual design guidelines, showing that both of our contributions are minor changes to existing password managers, which can be implemented easily with low overhead.

Effects-Driven Participatory Design: Learning from Sampling Interruptions2017Inngår i: Participatory Design & Health Information Technology / [ed] Bertelsen P., Kanstrup A.M., Bygholm A., Nohr C., IOS Press, 2017, s. 113-127Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Participatory design (PD) can play an important role in obtaining benefits from healthcare information technologies, but we contend that to fulfil this role PD must incorporate feedback from real use of the technologies. In this paper we describe an effects-driven PD approach that revolves around a sustained focus on pursued effects and uses the experience sampling method (ESM) to collect real-use feedback. To illustrate the use of the method we analyze a case that involves the organizational implementation of electronic whiteboards at a Danish hospital to support the clinicians' intra- and interdepartmental coordination. The hospital aimed to reduce the number of phone calls involved in coordinating work because many phone calls were seen as unnecessary interruptions. To learn about the interruptions we introduced an app for capturing quantitative data and qualitative feedback about the phone calls. The investigation showed that the electronic whiteboards had little potential for reducing the number of phone calls at the operating ward. The combination of quantitative data and qualitative feedback worked both as a basis for aligning assumptions to data and showed ESM as an instrument for triggering in-situ reflection. The participant-driven design and redesign of the way data were captured by means of ESM is a central contribution to the understanding of how to conduct effects-driven PD.

Nothing gets done and no one knows why: PCS and workplace control of lean in HM revenue and customs2012Inngår i: Industrial relations journal, ISSN 0019-8692, E-ISSN 1468-2338, Vol. 43, nr 5, s. 416-432Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the willingness and capacity of public sector unions to mobilise action against changes in the labour process in order to maintain some measure of control at the point of production. Taking as an instance an extended dispute in Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs over the introduction and impact of Lean processes, it marshals evidence gathered from documentary sources, branch representatives and national lay full-time officers to engage with the notion of a trade union bureaucracy. In taking a union with a left-wing leadership and a section with 80 per cent membership with an expressed willingness to escalate industrial action, the article tests Hyman's 1979 contention that, rather than a concentration on a bureaucratic caste, a much better explanation for conservatism centres on the nature of social relations within the union that encompass a wider layer of representatives.

    Abstract [en]

The prevailing economic and budgetary climate is intensifying the search for methods and practices aimed at generating efficiencies in public sector provision. This paper investigates the increasingly popular bundle of techniques operating under the generic descriptor of lean, which promises to improve operational quality processes while simultaneously reducing cost. It offers a critical appraisal of lean as a fashionable component of public sector reform and challenges the received wisdom that it unambiguously delivers ‘efficiencies’. Quantitative and qualitative research in HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) centred on employees' experiences has indicated the extent to which work has been reorganized along lean principles. However, employees perceive that changes in organizational processes and working practices have unintentionally generated inefficiencies which have impacted on the quality of public service. These suggested outcomes raise wider concerns as lean working is adopted in other public sector organizations.

‘‘They can’t be a buffer any longer’: Supervisors and class relations under white-collar lean production’2014Inngår i: Capital and Class, ISSN 0309-8168, Vol. 38, nr 2, s. 323-343Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article reasserts the value of the examination of class relations. It does so via a case study of tax-processing sites within HM Revenue and Customs, focusing on the changes wrought by the alterations to labour and supervisory processes implemented under the banner of ‘lean production’. It concentrates on the transformation of front-line managers, as their tasks moved from those that required tax knowledge and team support to those that narrowed their work towards output monitoring and employee supervision. Following Carchedi, these changes are conceptualised as strengthening the function of capital performed by managers, and weakening their role within the labour process.

Uncomfortable truths: teamworking under lean in the UK2017Inngår i: International Journal of Human Resource Management, ISSN 0958-5192, E-ISSN 1466-4399, Vol. 28, nr 3, s. 449-467Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A recent contribution in this journal – Procter, S. and Radnor, Z. (2014) ‘Teamworking under Lean in UK public services: lean teams and team targets in Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC)’ International Journal of Human Resource Management, 25:21, 2978–2995 – provides an account of teamworking in the UK Civil Service, specifically Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), focused on the relationship between recently implemented lean work organisation and teams and teamworking. Procter and Radnor claim in this work that it delivers a ‘more nuanced’ analysis of lean in this government department and, it follows, of the lean phenomenon more generally. Our riposte critiques their article on several grounds. It suffers from problems of logic and construction, conceptual confusion and definitional imprecision. Methodological difficulties and inconsistent evidence contribute additionally to analytical weakness. Included in our response are empirical findings on teamworking at HMRC that challenge Procter and Radnor’s evidential basis and further reveal the shortcomings of their interpretation

‘Stressed out of my box’: employee experience of lean working and occupational ill-health in clerical work in the UK public sector2013Inngår i: Work, Employment and Society, ISSN 0950-0170, E-ISSN 1469-8722, Vol. 27, nr 5, s. 747-767Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Occupational health and safety (OHS) is under-researched in the sociology of work and employment. This deficit is most pronounced for white-collar occupations. Despite growing awareness of the significance of psychosocial conditions – notably stress – and musculoskeletal disorders, white-collar work is considered by conventional OHS discourse to be ‘safe’. This study’s locus is clerical processing in the UK public sector, specifically Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, in the context of efficiency savings programmes. The key initiative was lean working, which involved redesigned workflow, task fragmentation, standardization and individual targets. Utilizing a holistic model of white-collar OHS and in-depth quantitative and qualitative data, the evidence of widespread self-reported ill-health symptoms is compelling. Statistical tests of association demonstrate that the transformed work organization that accompanied lean working contributed most to employees’, particularly women’s, ill-health complaints

    Abstract [en]

Cloud computing is very much accepted and acknowledged worldwide as a promising computing paradigm. On-demand provisioning based on a pay-per-use business model helps reduce costs through sharing computing and storage resources. Although cloud computing has become popular, some business and government organizations are still lagging behind in adopting cloud computing. This study reports the status of cloud utilization among business and government organizations, and the concerns of organizations regarding the adoption of cloud computing. The study shows that some government agencies are lagging behind in cloud computing use, while others are leading the way. Security is identified as the major reason for delay in adopting cloud computing. The outcomes of the data analysis process prove that some security measures such as encryption, access authentication, antivirus protection, firewall, and service availability are required by clients for adoption of cloud computing in the future.

    Abstract [en]

Cloud computing is daily becoming more and more accepted as a promising computing paradigm. For some years now, cloud computing has been in common use for such applications as Google apps (email, documents, etc), MSN Messenger (instant messaging), Skype (voice communications), and Flickr (image sharing). The idea of offering cloud computing facilities as a public utility began as early as the 1960s with John McCarthy.1, 2, 3 and 4 Organisations and universities offered distributed computing starting in the late 1970s through dial-up access.5 Grid computing was introduced in the early 1990s with the idea of providing access to shared computing power similar to the way electricity is shared through the electric power grid. In addition, open source platforms were first introduced by Eucalyptus, OpenNebula, and Nimbus for deploying private and hybrid clouds.6, 7 and 8Although cloud computing has been available for some time, there is still some organisational resistance to its adoption, not least because of security concerns.Bilal Charif, of Luleå University of Technology, Sweden and Ali Ismail Awad of Luleå University and Al Azhar University, Egypt show that a number of organisations have no internal security responsibilities, nor do they have proper information security policies such as business and disaster recovery plans, all of which makes cloud adoption difficult. In contrast, cloud computing offers recovery plans for small and medium-sized organisations that will often otherwise not be implemented.

Offentliga organisationers utmaningar inför digital transformation2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Although researchers have over the years highlighted the importance of managing and supporting learning in project-based settings, it still seems to be problematic. New project management capabilities are needed, such as systems thinking, which will allow project-based organizations to better cope with learning in the organizations. This article explores how Swedish project-based organizations within an engineering and construction context manage and support learning activities today and discusses, with the support of process management literature, how an “organizational-wide project learning process” could improve the prerequisites for learning in project-based organizations. Our findings from three project-based organizations indicate a lack of a holistic perspective on project learning. A conceptual model is proposed, with the aim of validating and promoting process thinking by introducing, for example, new roles responsible for intra- and inter-project learning, respectively.

    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to enhance the knowledge of business model development in the mobile service sector by exploring the underlying components of a business model for organizations within that industry. By drawing from business model literature combined with findings from a longitudinal case study of an iPhone application, a conceptual business model for mobile services was developed. Proposed model extends earlier frameworks by adding contingency aspects and the view of core resources into a dynamic business model. Findings from the study highlight the importance for application developers to have an overall resource strategy in order to support the sustainability of their business models. This is particularly important due to the rapid pace of change in the industry and the technology.

    Abstract [en]

Business model management is critical in the development of business models aimed to launch innovations and generate high venture performance. This study presents the use of personal construct theory and the repertory grid methodology, a new technique to explore central factors in entrepreneurs’ business model management. We identify typologies for business model management and underlying logics of these typologies. The study advances the business model literature in several ways. First it contributes with visualisation of entrepreneurs’ business model management and hence adds dimension of business model management. Second, theories and methods from cognitive psychology contribute to the literature with new knowledge on business model management. Repertory grid methodology, developed from Personal construct theory, enable identification of entrepreneurial cognitions of business models.Through 11 semi-structured interviews with serial entrepreneurs in the mobile service sector, this paper contributes with a framework that advances the business model literature by identifying business model management strategies and its defining features. Three categories are identified including six types of business model management strategies for navigating management of business models. The identified categories are: 1) “Comprehensive management” characterized by various levels of complexity, uncertainty, and variation, 2) “Risk management” characterized by various types of risks e.g. business, financial and social, and 3) “Resource management” characterized of various types of capital; e.g. financial, social, human, and innovation. The business model management typologies may assist entrepreneurs to reflect on their business model design and management. This study suggests that the repertory grid technique may be useful in understanding business model management.

    Abstract [en]

Existing product development models are solely an organisational matter. They do not take into consideration the whole supply chain and its different actors. We investigate in this paper how Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Viable System Model (VSM) can support and create an effective use of information in product development and hence identify critical linkages in the supply chain. The aim is to introduce VSM as a framework that enable an analysis of company's supply chains and visualize vital inter-organizational relationships that should be integrated in product development.

    Abstract [en]

In today’s ongoing urbanization and escalating climate change, there is an increasing demand on cities to be innovative and inclusive to handle these emerging issues. As an answer to these challenges, and in order to generate and adopt sustainable innovations and nature-based solutions in the urban areas, the concept of urban living labs has emerged. However, to date, there is confusion concerning the concept of the urban living lab and its key components. Some interpret the urban living lab as an approach, others as a single project, and some as a specific place – and some just do not know. In order to unravel this complexity and better understand this concept, we sought to identify the key components of an urban living lab by discussing the perspective of city representatives in the context of an urban living lab project. To achieve this goal, we reviewed previous literature on this topic and carried out two workshops with city representatives, followed by an open-ended questionnaire. In this article, we identify and discuss seven key components of an urban living lab: governance and management structure; financing models; urban context; nature-based solutions; partners and users (including citizens); approach; and ICT and infrastructure. We also offer an empirically derived definition of the urban living lab concept.

Exploring Waste and Value in a Lean Context2016Inngår i: International Journal of Business and Management, ISSN 1833-3850, E-ISSN 1833-8119, Vol. 11, nr 10, s. 282-297Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to take a critical, analytical approach to the concepts of waste and value in the leanliterature and how the concepts are applied in organisations’ lean efforts and the ambiguity surrounding theconcept of value.A review of the literature of lean was undertaken with a specific focus of the definitions of waste and value. Inaddition, it is illustrated how four case companies work with waste and value within a lean context. Theliterature review revealed that there have been significantly more frequent and exhaustive discussions of wastethan of value. Waste is often related to the seven wastes, but value is rarely clearly defined. The cases show anexclusive focus on waste reduction, which we argue can result in a loss of value. This paper provides a critical review of the relationship between waste and value and some of the consequencescaused by the actions taken by companies regarding solely focusing on waste. This paper demonstrates the orderwinner and order qualifier dimensions should be regarded in the analysis of waste and value, and incorporated inthe lean toolbox. In the lean research literature there is lack of discussion of the actual value for the customer. Weargue that finding a special concept of value in the lean literature would be desirable, and elaborating on value asa specific tool in the lean toolbox, since the concept of ‘waste’ cannot replace the concept of ‘value’.

Anställdas syn på inomorganisatoriskt värdeskapande inom tillverkningsindustrin2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

We present a re-detection scheme for the purpose to decrease the bit-error rate. The method is based on unequal Forward Error control Coding, FEC, where some data bits are protected by FEC and some are not. With this method, information about the error corrected data bits is fed back to aid a re-detection of the uncoded data bits. The method is evaluated for the North American Digital Cellular Mobile Telephone System, D-AMPS. Simulations indicate that a performance gain of up to 3 dB of carrier to interference ratio is achievable on a frequency selective fading channel for a residual bit-error rate of 1%.

Dialogical narrative networks and study of global IT-sourcing projects: implications for information security and privacy2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the patterns of technology use in a global enterprise. We use the concept of narrative networks to understand interactions between technology and organizations and the emergent implications. The paper is based on empirical work undertaken in the context of offshoring electronic medical records and billing systems from a group of US physician practices to service providers in India. Findings from our research suggest technology, represented as information security and privacy, as playing a central role in determining outcome of actions and the performances thereof. The narratives in technology in use and enactment of organizational forms display multiple third men, with features that modify the initial understandings of an agreement to implement technical systems.

    Abstract [sv]

Table-top exercises for emergency management: tame solutions for wicked problems2014Inngår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, ISSN 1530-1605, s. 1978-1985, artikkel-id 6758848Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In response to large emergencies, emergency managers deal with unknown situations characterized by complexity and uncertainty, so-called wicked problems. Existing tabletop exercises are used to train, test and exercise emergency managers but do table top exercises mirror the wickedness? A pilot study where emergency managers were interviewed about the use of tabletop exercises has been carried out. The pilot study and traditional tabletop exercises are analyzed through the lens of wicked problems. The result shows that tabletop exercises partly mirrors wicked problems but cannot handle every aspect of wicked problems. The main reasons for this are, that the planning of tabletop exercises in which the problems and solutions are known beforehand tames the problems and that focusing on the use of plans entails leaving unplanned problems unaddressed. I propose three design ideas to be used when designing tabletop exercises to better prepare emergency managers for wicked problems. First, focus on unsolved (wicked) problems instead of on problems already handled in plans and allow participants to identify them. Second, let participants tame the problems during the exercise instead of taming the problems ahead of time planning the exercises. Third, use existing plans and lessons learned from previous emergencies, and resolve the problems in collaboration.

Answers to questions about ”The Creative University”2004Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

As part of the evaluation of ”The Creative University” a questionnaire was sent out to all employees of Luleå University of Technology, during May 2002. The three PhD students who are connected to the evaluation prepared the questionnaire. The purpose of the questionnaire was to gain answers to questions posed about three main areas: The employees participation in the work process, the attitudes of the employees about the contents of the new vision and what shape the communication and meetings between employees has taken. In addition to the introductory background questions, the questionnaire was divided into three parts. The three main areas of the investigation were more or less covered in the three parts of the questionnaire. The first part was in reference to the development work done in the first phase, in which the objectives and the vision of the “Creative University” were formulated. The second part of the questionnaire was about the implementation of the new strategy, a process that is still in progress at the university. The questionnaire was divided into different parts in order to see if there was any difference in the pattern of participation for the different phases. In the second part there were also questions pertaining to the availability of information and to what degree the employees cooperate across boarders. Moreover, the respondents were asked to give an account of their views on how they regard the concept of “Integrated Knowledge Building”. The questionnaire ended with a third part in which the respondents were asked to respond to a number of statements about the contents of the vision and it’s implementation. The collective impressions can be said to be that employees of the University have been informed about the contents of the new vision. The goals of the vision receive support, such as recruiting more students, cooperating interdisciplinary, and an increased contact with the surrounding society. However, there appears to be no collective view of the concept of ”Integrated Knowledge Building”. As a last comment the compilation of the results show that many employees do not feel part of the implementation. The process of change has not affected the daily work for the majority of employees

Designing theme-based tabletop exercise for identifying and dealing with coordination problems in emergencies2016Inngår i: International Journal of Emergency Management, ISSN 1471-4825, E-ISSN 1741-5071, Vol. 12, nr 1, s. 22-40Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Tabletop exercises (TTXs) are used to train managers and other actors to deal with emergencies. These exercises that focus on the organisational coordination are planned and controlled by exercise managers through scenarios with predetermined events that participants discuss and act upon. Such exercises may lead to actors being ill prepared to deal with dynamic and emergent situations and problems. To address this knowledge gap, we apply an action design research approach to develop a TTX structured around non-sequential themes instead of predetermined events, thus allowing the participants to identify their own problems during the exercise. Our research contributes to existing knowledge by developing a set of design principles.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In the information era, enormous amounts of data have become available on hand to decision makers. Big data refers to datasets that are not only big, but also high in variety and velocity, which makes them difficult to handle using traditional tools and techniques. Due to the rapid growth of such data, solutions need to be studied and provided in order to handle and extract value and knowledge from these datasets. Furthermore, decision makers need to be able to gain valuable insights from such varied and rapidly changing data, ranging from daily transactions to customer interactions and social network data. Such value can be provided using big data analytics, which is the application of advanced analytics techniques on big data. This paper aims to analyze some of the different analytics methods and tools which can be applied to big data, as well as the opportunities provided by the application of big data analytics in various decision domains. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Big Data Analytics in Support of the Decision Making Process2016Inngår i: Procedia Computer Science, ISSN 1877-0509, E-ISSN 1877-0509, Vol. 100, s. 1071-1084Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Information is a key success factor influencing the performance of decision makers, specifically the quality of their decisions. Nowadays, sheer amounts of data are available for organizations to analyze. Data is considered the raw material of the 21st century, and abundance is assumed with today's 15 billion devices [aka Things!] already connected to the Internet. Accordingly, solutions need to be studied and provided in order to handle and extract value and knowledge from these datasets. Furthermore, decision makers need to be able to gain valuable insights from such rapidly changing data of high volume, velocity, variety, veracity, and value by using big data analytics. This paper aims to research how big data analytics can be integrated into the decision making process. Accordingly, using a design science methodology, the “Big – Data, Analytics, and Decisions” (B-DAD) framework was developed in order to map big data tools, architectures, and analytics to the different decision making phases. The ultimate objective and contribution of the framework is using big data analytics to enhance and support decision making in organizations, by integrating big data analytics into the decision making process. Consequently, an experiment in the retail industry was administered to test the framework. Accordingly, results showed added value when integrating big data analytics into the decision making process.

    ERP and Big Data: the inept couple2014Inngår i: Procedia Technology - Elsevier, ISSN 2212-0173, E-ISSN 2212-0173, Vol. 16, s. 242-249Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The world is witnessing an unprecedented interest in big data. Big data is data that is big in size (volume), big in variety (structured; semi-structured; unstructured), and big in speed of change (velocity). It was reported that almost 90% of the data worldwide was just created in the past 2 years. Therefore, this paper is an attempt to align ERP systems with big data. The objective is to suggest a future research agenda to bring together big data and ERP. While almost everyone is talking about big data at the product or tool level, relationship with social media, relationship with Internet of things, etc. no one has tried to integrate big data and ERP. A research agenda is discussed and introduced in this paper.

The impact of ERP partnership formation regulations on the failure of ERP implementations2013Inngår i: Procedia Technology - Elsevier, ISSN 2212-0173, E-ISSN 2212-0173, Vol. 9, s. 527-535Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

According to statistics, majority of ERP implementations fail. Failure means either total cancellation of the project, or failure to go-live on time and/or within budget constraints. Mainstream literature focuses on different reasons for failure including poor project management, resistance to change, lack of top management support, insufficient user training, etc. In this research we focus on the impact of vendor-partner relationship on the failure of ERP implementations. Some vendors provide easy terms and conditions in order to attract new partners and develop a wider network of partners in the targeted regions. In this study, the terms and conditions of SAP for certifying partners are studies and analyzed. In addition, case studies of two SAP partners are conducted. The primary research results suggest that the easy partnership conditions set by ERP vendors are among the main contributing factors for ERP projects failure in our cases. This finding is considered novel since most of the related work attributes failures to other factors, ignoring the vendor-partner terms and conditions.

The effect of implementing ERP systems on business performance: An exploratory case-study2010Inngår i: Knowledge Management and Innovation: A Business Competitive Edge Perspective - Proceedings of the 15th International Business Information Management Association Conference, IBIMA 2010, International Business Information Management Association (IBIMA), 2010, Vol. 2, s. 1296-1314Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

There is currently plenty of research concerning the effect of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) on business performance. Previous research has shown a mixed relationship between ERP and business performance where some suggested that ERP improves performance while others found that it does not. This paper investigates this topic by analyzing a detailed case-study consisting of an Egyptian SME, as a branch of a multinational company. The results indicate in general many benefits in business performance were achieved after implementing the ERP as reported by many users, but have also shown that few benefits previously linked to ERP were not fully achieved.

    Trajectory data mining: Integrating semantics2013Inngår i: Journal of Enterprise Information Management, ISSN 1741-0398, E-ISSN 1758-7409, Vol. 26, nr 5, s. 516-535Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Trajectory is the path a moving object takes in space. To understand the trajectory movement patters, data mining is used. However, pattern analysis needs semantics to be understood. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to enrich trajectories with semantic annotations, such as the name of the location where the trajectory has stopped, so that the paper is able to attain quality decisions. Design/methodology/approach: An experiment was conducted to explain that the use of raw trajectories alone is not enough for the decision-making process and detailed pattern extraction. Findings: The findings of the paper indicates that some fundamental patterns and knowledge discovery is only obtainable by understanding the semantics underlying the position of each point. Research limitations/implications: The unavailability of data are a limitation of the paper, which would limit its generalizability. Additionally, the lack of availability of tools for automatically adding semantics to clusters posed as a limitation of the paper. Practical implications: The paper encourages governments as well as businesses to analyze movement data using data mining techniques, in light of the surrounding semantics. This will allow, for example, solving traffic congestions, since by understanding the movement patterns, the traffic authority could make decisions in order to avoid such congestions. Moreover, it could also help tourism authorities, at national levels, to know tourist movement patterns and support these patterns with the required logistical support. Additionally, for businesses, mobile operators could dynamically enhance their services, voice and data, by knowing the semantically enriched patterns of movement. Originality/value: The paper contributes to the already rare literature on trajectory mining, enhanced with semantics. Mainstream literature focusses on either trajectory mining or semantics, therefore the paper claims that the approach is novel and is needed as well. By integrating mining outcomes with semantic annotation, the paper contributes to the body of knowledge and introduces, with lab evidence, the new approach. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Big Data Analytics: A Text Mining-Based Literature Analysis2014Inngår i: NOKOBIT - Norsk konferanse for organisasjoners bruk av informasjonsteknologi, ISSN 1892-0748, E-ISSN 1894-7719, Vol. 22, nr 1Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This literature review paper summarizes the state-of-the-art research on big data analytics. Due to massive amount of data exchanged everyday and the increased need for better data-based decision, businesses nowadays are looking for ways to efficiently manage, and optimize these huge datasets. Moreover, because of globalization, partnerships, value networks, emergence of social networks, and the huge information flow across and within enterprises, more and more businesses are interested in utilizing big data analytics. The main focus of this paper is to elucidate knowledge on the characteristics of big data analytics literature as well as explore the areas that lack sufficient research within the big data analytics domain, suggest future research avenues, as well as, present the current research findings that could aid practitioners, researchers, and vendors when embarking on big data analytics projects. Towards that end, we have reviewed 24 publications between 2010 and 2014. Results of text mining the papers revealed that they belong to three clusters with both common as well as distinct characteristics. The reviewed papers were clustered into three main themes, 1) technical algorithsms; 2) processing, cloud computing, opportunities & challenges; and 3) performance, prediction, and distributed systems.

Design Science Research: Evaluation in the Lens of Big Data Analytics2019Inngår i: Systems, ISSN 2079-8954, Vol. 7, nr 2, artikkel-id 27Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract: Given the different types of artifacts and their various evaluation methods, one of the main challenges faced by researchers in design science research (DSR) is choosing suitable and efficient methods during the artifact evaluation phase. With the emergence of big data analytics, data scientists conducting DSR are also challenged with identifying suitable evaluation mechanisms for their data products. Hence, this conceptual research paper is set out to address the following questions. Does big data analytics impact how evaluation in DSR is conducted? If so, does it lead to a new type of evaluation or a new genre of DSR? We conclude by arguing that big data analytics should influence how evaluation is conducted, but it does not lead to the creation of a new genre of design research.

The Future of ERP Systems: look backward before moving forward2012Inngår i: Procedia Technology - Elsevier, ISSN 2212-0173, E-ISSN 2212-0173, Vol. 5, s. 21-30Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems literature in an attempt to elucidate knowledge to help us see the future of ERP systems' research. The main purpose of this research is to study the development of ERP systems and other related areas in order to reach the constructs of mainstream literature. The analysis of literature has helped us to reach the key constructs of an as-is scenario, those are: history and development of ERP systems, the implementation life cycle, critical success factors and project management, and benefits and costs. However, the to-be scenario calls for more up-to-date research constructs of ERP systems integrating the following constructs: social networks, cloud computing, enterprise 2.0, and decision 2.0. In the end, the conclusion section will establish the link between the as-is and to-be scenarios opening the door for more novel ERP research areas

    Abstract [en]

This paper is an effort towards illustrating the use of expert panel (EP) as a mean of eliciting knowledge from a group of enterprise resource planning (ERP) experts as an exploratory research. The development of a cost estimation model (CEM) for ERP adoptions is very crucial for research and practice, and that was the main reason behind the willingness of experts to participate in this research. The use of EP was very beneficial as it involved various data collection and visualisation techniques, as well as data validation and confirmation. Beside its advantages, one of the main motives for using a group technique is that it is difficult to find a representative sample for a casual survey method, as ERP experts and consultants are rare to find, especially in the scope of SMEs' ERP implementations. It is worth noting that the panel reached consensus regarding the results of the EP. The experts modified and enhanced the initial cost drivers (CD) list largely, as they added, modified, merged and split different costs drivers. In addition, the experts added CF (sub-factors) that could influence or affect each cost driver. Moreover, they ranked the CD according to their weight on total costs. All of this helped the authors to better understand relationships among various CF
