    Abstract [en]

    Application mobility is achieved when migrating an application with its code, states and all related information from one device to another during its execution. As traditional applications are being challenged by apps, we believe it is time to rethink the notion of application mobility and explore the concept from a web perspective. More specifically, this paper aims to address the challenges associated with application mobility through mapping these against features within modern web technologies, analyzing their ability to meet the specific requirements of application mobility. An architectural proposal is described where we deploy application mobility using web technologies. We show that the emerging HTML5 standard along with related API:s and frameworks can provide an environment for delivering application mobility that strongly meets the requirements of support for offline work and heterogeneous environments.

    Abstract [en]

    When migrating applications between devices during runtime, one has achieved application mobility. In this paper we present the XAM system, providing application mobility through a peer-to-peer based solution over heterogeneous networks. Our architecture takes into consideration established requirements of application mobility, being application identification and distribution; context-awareness and context quality; seamlessness; heterogeneity support; and usability. Our system differs from traditional systems as it provides application mobility in a decentralized manner over heterogeneous networks, using different communication technologies. Following the evaluation of our system, we also discuss major challenges and possibilities for the continuing evolution of application mobility systems.

    Projektet ämnar till att möjliggöra uppkoppling av fler hushåll och företag till bredbandsnät, utveckla en teknisk plattform som ökar tillgång till tjänster och möjliggör mobilitet mellan olika accessnätverk. Genom att möjliggöra mobilitet kommer tjänster att vara nåbara på flera platser, mobiliteten skapar också utrymme för nya tjänster.

    Abstract [en]

    Bronchopneumonia is an acute or chronic inflammation of the lungs, in which the alveoli and/or interstitial are affected. Usually the diagnosis of Bronchopneumonia is carried out using signs and symptoms of this disease, which cannot be measured since they consist of various types of uncertainty. Consequently, traditional disease diagnosis, which is performed by a physician, cannot deliver accurate results. Therefore, this paper presents the design, development and application of an expert system for assessing the suspicion of Bronchopneumonia under uncertainty. The Belief Rule-Based Inference Methodology using the Evidential Reasoning (RIMER) approach was adopted to develop this expert system, which is named the Belief Rule-Based Expert System (BRBES). The system can handle various types of uncertainty in knowledge representation and inference procedures. The knowledge base of this system was constructed by using real patient data and expert opinion. Practical case studies were used to validate the system. The system-generated results are more effective and reliable in terms of accuracy than from the results generated by a manual system.

    Abstract [en]

    The paradigm shift where realtime communication will be handled on the web is soon becoming a reality. With only a few lines of Javascript code developers can easily turn a web browser into a voice or video terminal using the WebRTC API. While the IETF is actively working on standardizing the RTCWeb protocol to enable realtime communication across browsers and to avoid failures in session setups and enhance the session’s Quality of Experience (QoE), there is still a lack of a standardized congestion control mechanisms in the area. This paper proposes and evaluates a congestion avoidance mechanism and a rate adaptation model for WebRTC interactive video sessions in LTE networks where the model is based on realtime available bandwidth estimation and measurements. Our simulation results show that the proposed model provides a fair bandwidth allocation between TCP traffic flows and realtime media traffic flows. The results also show that excessive video frame delays and packet losses can be prevented with the proposed congestion avoidance mechanism. Consequently the proposed model improves performance and perceived QoE of WebRTC.

    Security is becoming an increasingly important feature of today's mobile environment where users download unknown apps and connect their smartphones to unknown networks while roaming. This paper proposes and evaluates an enhanced security model and architecture, WallDroid, enabling virtualized application specific firewalls managed by the cloud. The WallDroid solution can be considered as an Android Firewall Application but with some extra functionality. Key components used by the solution include VPN technologies like the Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and the Android Cloud to Device Messaging Framework (C2DM). Our solution is based on the cloud keeping track of millions of applications and their reputation (good, bad, or unknown) and comparing traffic flows of applications with a list of known malicious IP servers. We describe a prototype implementation and evaluate our solution.

    Positioning and routing in an outdoors environment is still challenging especially in complex buildings, where a number of buildings are combined with tunnels and bridges, and the GPS signal is unreachable. Wasting time for looking for a particular room in an unfamiliar huge indoor environment or a product in an enormous store is a real life problem that everybody faces on daily basis. The paper represents a solution for addressed problem by using Ekahau positioning systems and Android OS through an intermediary server, which acts between these two systems to provide actual room level position on a map by mathematical modeling technique. The system also based on request provides shortest path for a certain destination by computing Dijkstra's search algorithm. The distance between the locations is defined based on Taxi-cab geometry distance definition for the mobile clients. Additionally, the users can also display shortest path for some nearest items such as coffee machine. The implemented system evaluations are carried out in a basement floor on the site.

    Abstract [en]

    Today environmental safety, green energy, and ecological engineering became a top priority as a result of negative impact of human activities on the environment, current rates of industrial development and globalization. Higher education sector has a responsibility to those challenges as a key player in the successful transition to a knowledge-based economy and society. The problems, which society is facing today, could be mitigated by training highly qualified professionals with expertise in green information and communication technologies. International Erasmus Mundus Master Programin Pervasive Computing and Communications for Sustainable Development (PERCCOM) aims at combining advanced information and communication technologies with environmental awareness. Program provides unique competences for ICT professionals who will be able to build cleaner, greener, more resource and energy efficient cyber-physical systems.The paper defines a cross-disciplinary approach of master degree program in green ICT. The method used for defining the pedagogic program content focuses on the competences in order to ensure sustainability of the program in term of employability. The paper covers such aspects as training the ability to develop tools and software for sustainable development, as well as educating open-minded professionals familiar with international research environment.

    Various principles of sustainable development are currently being integrated into national policies and programs. Such principles relate to a range of aspects of human activities requiring urgent attention, including heating, mobility, food security, and sustainable agriculture. One of the fields contributing to the transition towards a sustainable society is that of green information and communication technologies (ICT). Therefore, the implementation of educational programs in green ICT is important in ensuring further ICT development around sustainability concerns. This article describes the development of an international Master's degree program named “Pervasive computing and communications for sustainable development” (PERCCOM) by an international consortium, which aimed to combine advanced ICT with environmental, economic, and social awareness. The article presents background information regarding the role of the ICT sector in environmental challenges, and a review of the literature, in order to understand what is required of ICT and green ICT graduates. The curriculum of the PERCCOM program is then described and findings on program improvement are reported. The article is aimed at academic and research professionals in the fields of sustainable development and green technologies, with the goal of improving educational initiatives to address the societal demand for sustainable development. The findings reported here contribute toward the search for a solution for sustainability, especially regarding environmental issues, among educating professionals with high expertise in networking, computing, and programming, who are able to design, develop, deploy, and maintain both pervasive computing systems and communication architectures for sustainable development.

    Among the various natural calamities, flood is considered one of the most catastrophic natural hazards, which has a significant impact on the socio-economic lifeline of a country. The Assessment of flood risks facilitates taking appropriate measures to reduce the consequences of flooding. The flood risk assessment requires Big data which are coming from different sources, such as sensors, social media, and organizations. However, these data sources contain various types of uncertainties because of the presence of incomplete and inaccurate information. This paper presents a Belief rule-based expert system (BRBES) which is developed in Big data platform to assess flood risk in real time. The system processes extremely large dataset by integrating BRBES with Apache Spark while a web-based interface has developed allowing the visualization of flood risk in real time. Since the integrated BRBES employs knowledge driven learning mechanism, it has been compared with other data-driven learning mechanisms to determine the reliability in assessing flood risk. The integrated BRBES produces reliable results in comparison to other data-driven approaches. Data for the expert system has been collected by considering different case study areas of Bangladesh to validate the system.

    Among the various natural calamities, flood is considered one of the most catastrophic natural hazards, which has disastrous impact on the socioeconomic lifeline of a country. Nowadays, business organizations are using Big Data to improve their strategies and operations for revealing patterns and market trends to increase revenues. Eventually, the crisis response teams of a country have turned their interest to explore the potentialities of Big Data in managing disaster risks such as flooding. The reason for this is that during flooding, crisis response teams need to take decisions based on the huge amount of incomplete and inaccurate information, which are mainly coming from three major sources, including people, machines, and organizations. Hence, Big Data technologies can be used to monitor and to determine the people exposed to the risks of flooding in real time. This could be achieved by analyzing and processing sensor data streams coming from various sources as well as data collected from other sources such as Twitter, Facebook, and satellite and also from disaster organizations of a country by using Big Data technologies. Therefore, this chapter explores the challenges, the opportunities, and the methods, required to leverage the potentiality of Big Data to assess and predict the risk of flooding.

    Blockchain is the underlying technology of a number of digital cryptocurrencies. Blockchain is a chain of blocks that store information with digital signatures in a decentralized and distributed network. The features of blockchain, including decentralization, immutability, transparency and auditability, make transactions more secure and tamper proof. Apart from cryptocurrency, blockchain technology can be used in financial and social services, risk management, healthcare facilities, and so on. A number of research studies focus on the opportunity that blockchain provides in various application domains. This paper presents a comparative study of the tradeoffs of blockchain and also explains the taxonomy and architecture of blockchain, provides a comparison among different consensus mechanisms and discusses challenges, including scalability, privacy, interoperability, energy consumption and regulatory issues. In addition, this paper also notes the future scope of blockchain technology.

    Early diagnosis of liver disease is very important in order to save human lives and take appropriate measure to control the disease. In several fields, especially in the field of medical science, the ensemble method was successfully applied. This research work uses different ensemble methods to investigate the early detection of liver disease. The selected dataset for this analysis is made up of attributes such as total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, age, sex, total protein, albumin, and globulin ratio. This research mainly aims at measuring and comparing the efficiency of different ensemble methods. AdaBoost, LogitBoost, BeggRep, BeggJ48 and Random Forest are the ensemble method used in this research. The study shows that LogitBoost is the most accurate model than other ensemble approaches.

    Now-a-days, the natural irrigation system is under pressure due to the growing water shortages, which are mainly caused by population growth and climate change. Therefore, the control of water resources to increase the allocation of retained water is very important. It has been observed in the last two decades, especially in the Indian sub-continent, the change of climate affects the agricultural crops production significantly. However, the prediction of good harvests before harvesting, enables the farmers as well as the government officials to take appropriate measures of marketing and storage of crops. Some strategies for predicting and modelling crop yields have been developed, although they do not take into account the characteristics of climate, and they are empirical in nature. In the proposed system, a Cuckoo Search Algorithm has been developed, allowing the allocation of water for farming under any conditions. The various parameters such as temperature, turbidity, pH., moisture have been collected by using Internet of Things (IoT) platform, equipped with related sensors and wireless communication systems. In this IoT platform the sensor data have been displayed in the cloud environment by using ThingSpeak.     Abstract [en]

    Two radio air interfaces, Evolved-LTE and New Radio, coexist in new 5G systems. New Radio operates in the millimeter band and provides a better bandwidth, but the higher frequencies also imply worse radio conditions. Multi-connectivity, a feature of 5G that allows users to connect to more than one base station simultaneously, can offer the advantages of both interfaces. In this paper, we investigate how multi-connectivity can improve user reliability and the system’s energy efficiency. Five algorithms for secondary cell association are presented and evaluated. We show a decrease in the radio link failure rate of up to 50% at high speeds and improvements of the energy efficiency of up to 20% at low speeds.

    This paper presents the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Pervasive Computing and Communications for Sustainable Development (PERCCOM). This program brings together 11 academic partners and 8 industry partners to combine advanced Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with environmental awareness to enable world-class education and unique competences for ICT professionals who can build cleaner, greener, more resource and energy efficient cyber-physical systems. First, this paper describes the rationale and motivations for ICT education for sustainability challenges. It then details the structure and contents of the programs including the courses offered at the three teaching locations (Nancy France, Lappeenranta Finland, and Lulea Sweden). The ways that the program has been running as well as students selection, their thesis works, involvement of industry, are also discussed. The program was built and managed using a solid academic standards and strategies student-centered learning.

    Indoor positioning is recognized as one of the upcoming major applications which can be used in wide variety of applications such as indoor navigation and enterprise asset tracking. The significance of localization in indoor environments have made the use of Wi-Fi based indoor positioning so that it can utilize available current wireless infrastructure and perform positioning very easily. In this paper we introduced a user friendly prototype for Wi-Fi based indoor positioning system where a user can identify its own position in indoor. Wi-Fi received signal strength (RSS) fluctuations over time introduce incorrect positioning. To minimize the fluctuation of RSS, we developed Particle Filters with the prototype. A comparison between with and without Particle Filter for error performance is presented and at the same time it is also noticed that variation in number of particles could change the positioning accuracy. Moreover comparison between calibration data in all directions and in one direction while constructing a radio map is presented.

    Internet Voting (i-Voting) is an online electronic voting process where a voter can vote staying online from anywhere or connected to a wireless network of a target place. In this paper, a wireless network built with a MANET has been considered for the voting process. National parliamentary voting process of Bangladesh has been taken as the case study. The MANET of the voting process is built using some stationary wireless nodes and mobile wireless nodes. Voters carry mobile wireless nodes using which they can vote. Stationary wireless nodes are installed and deployed in the MANET built in a polling area selected by the National Agency of Election process. These nodes are directly in connection with the national database of voters. Stationary nodes perform the authentication and validation processes of the voter (a mobile node) before the vote is given and casted. The secured transaction of data is the goal to be occurred and routed after a strong authentication and validation of the user has been confirmed. The whole process is completed in a scalable wireless network with a distributed goal based approach. Total processes are followed by secured routing of data in this MANET. The optimal routing protocol among OLSR, AODV, DSR, TORA and GRP has been chosen. Denial of Service (DoS) attacks have been considered as the major threat on nodes in this MANET. The simulation work is done in the OPNET simulator.

    For estimation of signal coverage and localization, path loss is the major component for link budget of any communication system. Instead of traditional Doppler shift or Doppler spread techniques, the path loss has been chosen for IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) signals of 2.5 and 5 GHz to measure the signal coverage and localization in this research. A Wi-Fi system was deployed in a MANET (Mobile Adhoc NETwork), involving both mobile and stationary nodes. The Adhoc network was also assessed in a routing environment under AODV and OLSR protocols. The proposal was evaluated using the OPNET Modeler simulation environment.

    This paper presents the real time vehicle detection and tracking system, based on data, collected from a single camera. In this system, vehicles are detected by using Haar Feature-based Cascaded Classifier on static images, extracted from the video file. The advantage of this classifier is that, it uses floating numbers in computations and hence, 20% more accuracy can be achieved in comparison to other classifiers and features of classifiers such as LBP (Local Binary Pattern). Tracking of the vehicles is carried out using Lucas-Kanade and Horn Schunk Optical Flow method because it performs better than other methods such as Morphological and Correlation Transformations. The proposed system consists of vehicle detection and tracking; and it is evaluated by using real data, collected from the route networks of Chittagong City of Bangladesh.

    Abstract [en]

    Recent developments in the area of Wireless sensor networks and Mobile ad hoc networks provide flexible and easy- to-deploycommunication means for a wide range of appli- cations without any need for an infrastructure being pre-con- figured. Our paper studies performance of proactive and reactive routing protocols in a scenario with agro-sensors. Our results, achieved by simulating a network both in OPNET Modeler and NS2, show that the AODV routing protocol performs better for a large-scale network (where node density is higher) while the DSR routing protocol performs better in a small-scale network given the particular scenario we studied.

    In wireless telephony networks, each cell is a geographical coverage area which can distribute frequency among cellular networks for different specific mobile network regions. Good cell and bad cell are used in the cellular network to identify the proper user position in a certain geographical area. The good cell is identified by assuming a maximum distance between latitude and longitude of two cell points with reasonable shape in a particular geographical area. The bad cell is identified while the cell shapes are become as irregular shape. However, mobile location accuracy is important for good cells data. Some cell data are not precise in shape to become good cells. Moreover, locations of handset are dependent for the accuracy of cell data shape. Most of the cases mobile operators are facing problem for the positioning purposes due to inaccuracy of the shape of cell data. The proper position accuracy of user is not visualized due to inaccuracy of cell data shape. The proposed system identifies the bad cell and repairs as good cell using visualize tool. An XML data file contains cell data information with longitude and latitude. A data base has been created to store the longitude and latitude of cell data in a standard format using PHP code. The visualize tool identify bad cell and good cell from the database. Furthermore, the tool converts the bad cell into good cell. Moreover, the tool can able to repair the cells which are not converted as good cell shape. The system can able to help to improve quality of user position accuracy for GSM and CDMA mobile operator.

    Mobility management is an essential feature of cellular networks. High accuracy of mobile user positioning is needed to handle mobility efficiently enough and bad cell data can harm this feature significantly. Inaccuracy of cell shapes, lack of cell data measurements, and inaccurate coordination in a geographical area are major shortcomings when it comes to positioning of mobile users in cellular networks. This paper describes a tool that visualizes and analyzes cell data based on XML log files. The tool evaluates a mathematical expression to identify bad cells from the log file and successfully fixes most of the bad cells identified. The tool repairs bad cell shapes in order to achieve better positioning of mobile users.

    The market for smart phones has been booming in the past few years. There are now over 400,000 applications on the Android market. Over 10 billion Android applications have been downloaded from the Android market. Due to the Android popularity, there are now a large number of malicious vendors targeting the platform. Many honest end users are being successfully hacked on a regular basis. In this work, a cloud based reputation security model has been proposed as a solution which greatly mitigates the malicious attacks targeting the Android market. Our security solution takes advantage of the fact that each application in the android platform is assigned a unique user id (UID). Our solution stores the reputation of Android applications in an anti-malware providers’ cloud (AM Cloud). The experimental results witness that the proposed model could well identify the reputation index of a given application and hence its potential of being risky or not.

    Wireless sensor networks are at the crux of the Internet of Things applications. At the current state, there exist several technologies competing against each other in the IoT space. These proprietary technologies and hardware pose a serious problem of interoperability, which is vital to unleash the vision of the Internet of Things. Moreover, the traditional approach towards wireless sensor networks was to be unlike the internet, primarily because of the power and memory constraints posed by the tiny sensor nodes. The IETF 6LoWPAN technology facilitates the usage of IPv6 communications in sensor networks, which helps solve the problem of interoperability, enabling low power, low cost micro-controllers to be globally connected to the internet. Another IETF technology, CoAP allows interactive communication over the internet for these resource constrained devices. Along with 802.15.4, 6LoWPAN and CoAP, an open, standardized WSN stack for resource constrained devices and environments becomes available. The Contiki OS, touted as the open source OS for IoT, provides low power IPv6 communications and supports the 6LoWPAN and CoAP protocols, along with mesh routing using RPL. Along with these, a CoAP framework, Californium (Cf) provides a scalable and RESTful API to handle IoT devices. These open tools and technologies are employed in this work to form an open, inter-operable, scalable, reliable and low power WSN stack. This stack is then simulated using Contiki's default network simulator Cooja, to conduct performance analysis in varying conditions such as noise, topology, traffic etc. Finally, as a proof of concept and a validation of the simulated stack, physical deployment is carried out, using a Raspberry Pi as a border router, which connects the wireless sensor network to the global internet along with the T-mote sky sensor motes. Therefore, this work develops and demonstrates an open, interoperable, reliable, scalable, low power, low cost WSN stack, both in terms of simulations and physical deployments, and carries out performance evaluation of the stack in terms of throughput, latency and packet loss.

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are the key enablers of the internet of things (IoT) paradigm. Traditionally, sensor network research has been to be unlike the internet, motivated by power and device constraints. The IETF 6LoWPAN draft standard changes this, defining how IPv6 packets can be efficiently transmitted over IEEE 802.15.4 radio links. Due to this 6LoWPAN technology, low power, low cost micro-controllers can be connected to the internet forming what is known as the wireless embedded internet. Another IETF recommendation, CoAP allows these devices to communicate interactively over the internet. The integration of such tiny, ubiquitous electronic devices to the internet enables interesting real-time applications. We evaluate the performance of a stack consisting of CoAP and 6LoWPAN over the IEEE 802.15.4 radio link using the Contiki OS and Cooja simulator, along with the CoAP framework Californium (Cf).

    Abstract [en]

    Road crack detection and road damage assessment are necessary to support driving safety in a route network. Several unexpected incidents (e.g. road accidents) take place all over the world due to unhealthy road infrastructure. This paper proposes a deep learning approach for road crack detection and road damage assessment which will contribute to the transport sector of a country like Bangladesh where a plethora of roads undergo the crack problem. The proposed model consists of two phases. In the first phase, the model is trained using transfer learning (VGG16) to detect the existence of crack on the road surface. In the second phase, an integrated framework, combining CNN (VGG16) and RNN (LSTM), is trained to classify the crack in one of the two categories-severe and slight. After experiments, the validation accuracies obtained by the proposed models (VGG16 and VGG16-LSTM) are respectively 99.67% and 97.66%.

    Detecting emotion from facial expression has become an urgent need because of its immense applications in artificial intelligence such as human-computer collaboration, data-driven animation, human-robot communication etc. Since it is a demanding and interesting problem in computer vision, several works had been conducted regarding this topic. The objective of this research is to develop a facial expression recognition system based on convolutional neural network with data augmentation. This approach enables to classify seven basic emotions consist of angry, disgust, fear, happy, neutral, sad and surprise from image data. Convolutional neural network with data augmentation leads to higher validation accuracy than the other existing models (which is 96.24%) as well as helps to overcome their limitations.

    Even in the 21 st century human is still handicapped with natural disaster. Flood is one of the most catastrophic natural disasters. Early warnings help people to take necessary steps to save human lives and properties. Sensors can be used to provide more accurate early warnings due to possibilities of capturing more detail data of surrounding nature. Recent advantages in protocol standardization and cost effectiveness of sensors it is possible to easily deploy and manage sensors in large scale. In this paper, a heterogeneous wireless sensor network is proposed and evaluated to predict natural disaster like flood. In this network CoAP is used as a unified application layer protocol for exchanging sensor data. Therefore, CoAP over SMS protocol is used for exchanging sensor data. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the heterogeneous wireless sensor network for predicting natural disaster is presented in this paper.

    Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is claimed to be a global booster technology for economic development. IIoT brings bulky use-cases with a simple goal of enabling automation, autonomation or just plain digitalization of industrial processes. The abundance of interconnected IoT and CPS generate additional burden on the telecommunication networks, imposing number of challenges to satisfy the key performance requirements. In particular, the QoS metrics related to real-time data exchange for critical machine-to-machine type communication. This paper analyzes a real-world example of IIoT from a QoS perspective, such as remotely operated underground mining vehicle. As part of the performance evaluation, a software tool is developed for estimating the absolute, one-way delay in end-toend transmissions. The measured metric is passed to a machine learning model for one-way delay prediction based on LTE RAN measurements using a commercially available cutting-edge software tool. The achieved results prove the possibility to predict the delay figures using machine learning model with a coefficient of determination up to 90%.

    Communication in next generation networks will use multiple access technologies, creating a heterogeneous network environment. To enable end-user terminals to move between access networks with minimal disruption, the terminals should be able to maintain multiple active network connections. Such a multihomed mobile host will experience different capabilities and coverage area depending on the access technologies. This paper proposes and evaluates an extension to Mobile IPv6 enabling multihoming, regardless of the access technology. Mobility of multimedia communication in this environment should adapt to changing conditions and be base on dynamic measurements and user preferences. The proposed architecture gives opportunities for mobile multimedia applications to use multiple access networks simultaneously and the possibility to move individual flows. Media flows are identified by destination IP address, protocol and port number. Results from a real world prototype are presented using three different wireless access technologies: 802.11, UMTS and 802.16-2004.

    Future wireless networks are expected to be based on coexistence of multiple different access network technologies. Mobile devices will then be equipped with multiple wireless interfaces enabling connectivity via multiple architectures. Different wireless techno-logies differ widely considering their capabilities and coverage. This requires a mobile node to maintain multiple active connections depending on the appli-cations used and available access networks. To enable this, a mobile node needs to be multihomed and able to direct traffic flows via different interfaces. This paper describes a proposal extending Mobile IPv6 with multihoming functionality. Multihoming is managed using IP address, protocol and port number.

    Sense Smart City is a Swedish project designed to conduct research, create new business opportunities and sustainably increase ICT research and innovation capability with specific objective to make urban cities/areas "smarter". The project will generate new and better ICT solutions, that instrument urban areas to gather and combine information (energy, traffic, weather, events, activities, needs and oppinions) continously as well as "on-demand". This will enable city environments to become "smarter", as more adaptive and supportive environment, for its inhabitants and visitors - people as well as organisations.

    Mobility is gaining a tremendous interest among Internet users and wireless access networks are increasingly being installed to enable mobile usage. Internet mobility requires solutions to move between access networks with maintained network connectivity. Seamless mobility in turn means that the experience of using a service is unaffected while being mobile. Communication in next generation networks will use multiple access technologies, creating a heterogeneous network environment. Further, roaming between network service providers may take place. To enable mobile nodes to move between access networks within as well as between network service providers with minimal disruption, nodes should be able to maintain multiple active network connections. With the usage of multihomed nodes, seamless mobility can be achieved in already installed infrastructures, not providing mobility support. Mobility in heterogeneous access networks also requires network selections that scale for services. In this article we propose an architecture where application service providers and network service providers define service levels to be used by a mobile node and its user. The user selects a service and the service level from an application service provider. When performing access network selection, information received as part of an application service level will be used to find a network that supports the service required. The performance of available access networks will be monitored and considered when making the decision. Our proposed architecture provides solutions to move flows between interfaces in real-time based on network performance, quality of service signalling to correspondent nodes, and cancellation of flows to give way for more important traffic.
