    Abstract [en]

    There is considerable interest in developing distributed information systems on top of legacy systems. Over the last two decades, many issues and solutions have been brought forward pertaining to issues of integration, e.g., schema integration, schema mapping. We have developed a schema mapping framework that features domain-specific metamodels, metamodel-driven schema translation, and semi-automated schema mapping driven by the metamodel. First, we exploit metamodels, i.e., models about models, which transcend heterogeneity among different data models. Second, we enhance them with domain semantics to better express metadata, resulting in less ambiguous information schemas. Third, we develop our own methods of schema translation and schema mapping based on the domain-specific metamodel, capable of a significant degree of semi-automation for convenience and adherence to the metamodel. Finally, our metadata management framework uses metadata repositories that facilitate reuse, interoperability and extensibility. This paper describes our implementation and utilization of domain-specific metamodels within the schema mapping framework that we have developed.

    Abstract [en]

    With the introduction of clustered messaging brokers and the fault-tolerant Mobile Connector, we can guarantee the exactly-once consumption of messages by agents. The context-aware messaging allowed us to decrease the messaging overhead which has to be present in any fault-tolerant solution. This paper proposes a complete fault-tolerant layer for multi-agent systems (EFTL) that does not restrict agent autonomy and mobility in any way. An application can choose if it wants EFTL support and that decision is based on support costs. A persistent publish/subscribe messaging model allows the creation of an external platform-independent fault-tolerant layer. In order to support the multi-agent platforms of different vendors, a large part of the application logic is moved from those platforms to an application server. We present the EFTL system architecture, the algorithm of exactly-once message consumption and the system's performance analysis

    A persistent publish/subscribe messaging model allows the creation of an application-independent fault-tolerant layer for multi-agent systems. We propose a layer which is capable of supporting heterogenous agent platforms from different vendors. This layer is a three-tier application, which is accessible from multi-agent systems via web-services or a persistent publish/subscribe messaging system. We describe the design of the fault-tolerant layer, its messaging system, as well as the algorithm of fault-recovery procedure in the case of agent and/or host death. We also present performance analysis of the proposed solution, to justify its use in systems which demand different levels of reliability.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we propose a complete platform-independent fault-tolerant layer for multi-agent systems, which is able to support heterogeneous agent platforms from different vendors. Our solution incorporates the usage of the J2EE architecture, Web-services and the persistent publish/subscribe messaging model to allow negotiable support and guarantee the exactly-once consumption of messages. It greatly improves the reliability of multi-agent systems and produces insignificant runtime overheads. We present the layer's conceptual architecture and conclude this paper with a performance analysis of the solution.

    Purpose – The recent advances of mobile computing and sensing technologies have enabled mobile devices to individually sense environment context and develop situation awareness capability. To gain a better understanding of the environment, mobile devices that are co-located can establish a mobile peer-to-peer (MP2P) environment to share their individual context information. The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical model for representing and reasoning about situations using uncertain context information captured by multiple devices in an MP2P environment. Design/methodology/approach – The paper proposes a generic model for reasoning about situations using uncertain context information captured by multiple devices in a MP2P environment. A data fusion technique is then integrated into the proposed model. To deal with uncertainty of context information captured by multiple independent devices, several models to estimate reliability of context information captured in the environment is proposed and developed. Findings – The proposed model has been implemented as a middleware and evaluated using data from real experiments in various scenarios and environment settings. The results of the experiments show the robust performances of the proposed model as the basis for situation reasoning in the environment. Originality/value – A novel model to represent situations and context information captured by multiple devices and to estimate reliability context information used for situation reasoning is proposed. The proposed model is then implemented as a middleware and validated using context data taken captured by multiple independent devices in a MP2P environment.

    The emergence of context-aware systems has highlighted the requirement to reduce complexity in developing the systems by establishing a context middleware. The middleware aims to provide support for managing context independently from applications and enhance generality and reusability of context sources for multiple applications. In this paper we propose a novel framework for managing context in mobile ad hoc network environment (MANET). We model contexts and situations based on the concept of situation space in Context Spaces theory and integrate the model with Dempster-Shafer rule of combination for situation reasoning. Furthermore, we incorporate reliability of information in the fusion mechanism based on discount rule to adopt uncertainty factor that may exist due to limited and uncertain evidence in the hostpsilas environment. Finally, the implementation and experimentation issues of the prototype are also discussed.

    Managing context in Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) environments is challenging due to environmental characteristics and limitations. Different aspects of context management such as location management, context acquisition, context quality management, context discovery and other related tasks need to be dealt with to provide reliable context management support. In this paper, we propose a new approach to context management in the MANET environments. We model contexts and situations based on Context Spaces (CS) theory and the Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory of evidences. A heuristic approach to computing the relevancy value of context information to the defined situation of context-aware applications is also proposed and developed. The relevancy value is then incorporated in the fusion mechanism based on the discount rule. We have developed a hybrid location model and integrated the approach to the model. The prototype of the framework is built based on the On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP) as the underlying messaging protocol among the collaborative hosts. Finally, the implementation and experimentation issues of the prototype are discussed.

    Advances in wireless and sensing technology and the proliferation of context-aware systems have highlighted the requirement to reduce the complexity of system development by establishing a middleware framework of context management. The middleware aims to manage different aspects of context and location management as well as situation reasoning and other related tasks. In this paper, a middleware framework of context management and situation reasoning in MANET environment is proposed. It includes components to model and reason about contexts and situations, to construct location models and estimate the relevance of contexts used for situation reasoning. We also incorporate On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP) as the underlying messaging protocol among the collaborative hosts to deal with MANET communication issues. We discuss implementation and experimentation issues of the framework in personal digital assistance (PDA) devices which form the ad hoc network as proof-of-concept of the framework. Our preliminary implementation and experimentation shows the capability of the framework to work in such limited devices and to perform the designed capabilities of the middleware.

    The proliferation of intelligent vehicle, sensor and communication technology has led to the emergence of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) applications that aim to increase safety and efficiency of driving. The important requirements of these applications are the capabilities to provide unobtrusive support to the driver and the application capability to adapt to changing situations in the environment without having explicit driver intervention. This paper proposes a new approach for context and situation reasoning in V2V environment. We model context and situations based on context spaces and integrate the model with Dempster-Shafer rule of combination for situation reasoning. We also incorporate reliability of each information source in the fusion mechanism based on discount rule. We apply this approach to a context middleware framework that aims to facilitate context and situation reasoning to provide reliable support for cooperative applications in V2V environment and discuss the implementation and experimentation issues of the prototype.

    The current development of context-awareness has introduced various emerging research areas to reduce complexity in developing context aware applications by applying service-oriented approach in managing context and establish context service. The establishment of context service will enable context aware systems to access and utilize context from context providers without paying necessary attention on how context information are composed and managed. Frequent changes of available context providers with different context quality are common phenomena in mobile environment. Hence, dealing with quality of context is a very important issue to provide reliable services for context management in this environment. We have identified some key requirements to establish context service and propose a service-oriented framework to facilitate context management in mobile environment. Furthermore we show our approach to deal with problem in providing appropriate context based on its quality requirements and the preferences of the corresponding context request

    The devices in an ad hoc network are expected to perform network functionalities by themselves due to the absence of proper networking infrastructure. Generally the routing is multi-hop as nodes may not be within the wireless transmission range of each other. This paper describes a system named A-GATE to support the high-level communication needs of agents in such a network. Agents are used to support the interoperability among devices and the system is capable of handling heterogeneity in agent platforms. A-GATE proposes a novel routing mechanism for locating the intended recipient of a message. The system aims to be self-organizing and self-configuring to suit the dynamic nature of ad hoc networks

    In a multidatabase environment with mobile computers involved, the nature of computing is such that the user may not wait for the submitted global transaction to complete before disconnecting from the network. In this paper, a basic architectural framework to support transaction management in multidatabase systems is proposed and discussed. A simple message and queuing facility is suggested which provides a common communication and data exchange protocol to effectively manage global transactions submitted by mobile workstations (MWS). The state of global transactions is modelled through the use of transaction sub-queues. The proposed strategy allows an MWS to submit global transactions and then disconnect itself from the network to perform some other tasks, thereby increasing processing parallelism and independence

    Emerging pervasive computing and communications technologies evolved into ample pioneering initiatives, leading towards a world in which computing systems are distributed, mobile, intelligent, supportive, unobtrusive, invisible and cooperative. Central to the notion of a pervasive systems is context-awareness. Context-aware computing endeavours to make systems aware of specific, relevant circumstances in the computing environment, and enable them to adapt their behaviour accordingly. Context-aware systems can process (intelligently) the context information acquired by any type of a sensor (either physical, computational or virtual). This, in turn, enhances services provided to users (including service personalization), makes pervasive systems smart by reacting (and possibly pro-acting) to changing circumstances, and enables adaptability and autonomy of systems, freeing users from avoidable sometimes routine interactions.

    This article describes a joint research work between Monash University and the University of Alicante, where software originally meant for plagiarisman and copy detection in academic works is successfully applied to perform comparative analysis of different editions of literary works. The experiments were performed with Spanish texts from the Miguel de Cervantes digital library. The results have proved useful for literary and linguistic research, automating part of the tedious task of comparative text analysis. Besides, other interesting uses were detected.

Unforeseen circumstances, dynamic changes in the environment, various unexpected impact factors require immediate real-time adequate response that can be achieved mainly through context-aware, intelligent and cost-efficient functionality of the systemContext-awareness relates to building an appropriate and relevant model of the surrounding environment (Zaslavsky, 2002). Road system, traffic accidents, congestion, knowledge of individual vehicles, as well as emergency vehicles are all important part of such a model. Context includes information about road infrastructure, data gathered from sensor networks, and other sources of context.We propose to combine mobile communication technologies with pervasive computing techniques which will facilitate and enable effective context-aware decision support for medical emergency management in mass gatherings while ensuring road safety. For example, some intelligent transportation systems can be added to the underlying infrastructure for timecritical decision making in emergency situations. We aim to develop and test a prototype mobile decision support system for improving transportation safety during medical emergency in mass gatherings. The prototype will utilise the medical emergency management ontology, which was developed based on extensive review of the relevant literature and with consultation with industry (Sujanto, et al, 2007).We will report on the project, which capitalizes on smart information use and will be of great benefit to making better transportation decisions in mass gatherings emergency management. This research will result in gaining a clearer understanding of the nature and requirements of road safety in medical emergency during mass gathering events. We propose to build and test a mobile real time decision support tool for improving efficiency of transportation decisions.     Rapidly expanding cellular communication technology, wireless LANs and satellite services have made it possible for mobile users to access information anywhere and at any time. In a mobile computing environment replication might be considered as an essential technique providing reliability, throughput increase and data availability. This paper addresses the replica control protocols with an emphasis on workstation mobility issues. The modifications that have to be made to the primary copy method for replicated database management strategies in order to address the effect of mobility on the existing replica control protocols are analysed and proposed. A variation of the primary copy algorithm, called virtual primary copy method is proposed and it is shown that this method is well suited for the distributed mobile computing environment. The performance of virtual primary copy method comparative to traditional primary copy method using computer simulation is analysed.

    This paper proposes and discusses a simulation model of a message and transaction queuing protocol which supports submission of transactions from mobile workstations in a distributed multidatabase environment. The model is based on coloured Petri nets formalism. A hierarchical coloured Petri nets model describing the two key components of the protocol, namely message queuing facility and transaction queuing facility, is constructed and analyzed using the software tool Design/CPN. Simulation of message and transaction processing algorithms has been carried out to verify and refine the design of the proposed protocol. The tool has also enabled us to assess the practicality of the developed approach and study the impact of the protocol implementation. Finally, the results of simulation are analysed and discussed

    Convergence of object-oriented technologies with advances in computer and communications technologies will lead to new paradigms and approaches to building object-based distributed systems, including mobile computing systems. Portable and mobile computers involved in mobile database query processing use battery power. These mobile hosts have severe battery energy problems and significant improvements in battery technology are not yet forthcoming. Portable computers rim on different energy consumption modes (normal and doze). This feature is used to save battery energy through flexible and efficient query optimisation. This paper discusses and proposes a two-dimensional energy-work 'query optimisation algorithm. The algorithm employs dynamic programming techniques and achieves a balance between saving energy consumption at mobile hosts and minimising total work for query processing in the whole database. A simulation of the algorithm is implemented and analysed

    In the future, application mobility can play a crucial role and prove to be an enabler for next generation distributed applications. Application mobility lets an application follow the users while they roam between networks using several devices. In order to achieve seamless application mobility, several issues need to be considered such as device heterogeneity, GUI-adaptation and application loss. Thus, in this paper our contributions are two-fold. Firstly, we present our novel architecture called the Application Mobility Manager (A2M) which provides seamless application mobility. The proposed architecture is context-aware and decentralized. Finally, we present a novel application called the Mobile YouTube Player which is capable of moving between heterogeneous devices and provide users with seamless video experience. We validate the proposed system through rigorous experimentation and user studies based on the real-world test bed and prototype implementation. The results clearly validate that the proposed system can support seamless application mobility.

New applications and protocols will be created and Mobile IP is important to this development, since Mobile IP support can be used to allow mobile hosts to move between networks with maintained connectivity. This article describes multihomed Mobile IP enabling mobile hosts to register multiple care-of addresses at the home agent, to enhance the performance of wireless network connectivity. Flows can be load-balanced between care-of addresses to achieve a more reliable connectivity. A prototype is also described.

    In future wireless access networks, connectivity to wired infrastructure will be provided through multiple access points with possibly different capabilities and utilization. The demand for increased network performance requires the ability to predict the best overall performance of those access points and to switch access point when the performance changes. Then there is the demand for mobility between networks with maintained connectivity which requires the ability to switch the point of attachment. We propose Multihomed Mobile IP, enabling performance discovery at the networks layer and the capability to decide what AP to use. Mobile IP support is needed to allow mobile hosts to move between networks with maintained connectivity. Multihomed Mobile IP enables mobile hosts to register multiple care-of addresses at the home agent, to enhance the performance of wireless network connectivity. This article describes a simulator evaluation of multihomed Mobile IP.

    This paper proposes and analyzes a Running Variance Metric performance measurement of wireless local area networks and its formal aspects. Our approach evaluates the performance of wireless local area networks in infrastructure mode as well as in ad hoc mode. The Running Variance Metric is used to discover relative traffic loads of available access-points/gateways at the network layer in order to provide connectivity to the wired network. The paper discusses a simulation study. The simulation results demonstrate the usefulness and efficiency of the Running Variance Metric to evaluate the utilization of available access-points/gateways. It is also shown that this metric can be used for hop-analysis in multi-hop ad hoc wireless networks.

    Support for host mobility an essential and necessary feature for roaming users who connect to wireless networks via access points. Access points may have different capabilities, be connected to different networks and be installed by different providers. A mobile host will discover multiple access points in this environment. In such an environment, a mobile host should be able to use the best available connection to communicate with a correspondent host and perhaps use multiple connections for different hosts. In areas with wireless local area network access, pockets with limited or no coverage could exist. Such restricted connectivity could be compensated by neighbor hosts who form an ad hoc network and relay packets until they reach an access point. This paper describes and discusses a proposed solution towards enabling and supporting connectivity in wireless networks. In the proposed solution the network layer software will evaluate and decide which wireless network connections to use. A Running Variance Metric (RVM) and a Relative Network Load(RNL) are used to measure the traffic load of access points in wireless access networks. RVM and RNL can be efficiently used for both infrastructure networks and ad hoc networks. Multihomed Mobile IP (M-MIP) is an extension of Mobile IP that enables mobile hosts to use multiple care-of addresses simultaneously. The extension enhances network connectivity by enabling the mobile host, the home agent and correspondent hosts to evaluate and select the best connection. A proposed gateway architecture using M-MIP that integrates wired IP networks with ad hoc networks is described. The M-MIP and gateway architecture using the RVM and RNL metrics have been validated with simulation studies and results are presented.

    Ad hoc networks have thus far been regarded as stand-alone networks without assumed connectivity to wired IP networks and the Internet. With wireless broadband communications and portable devices with appropriate CPU, memory and battery performance, ad hoc connectivity will become more feasible and demand for global connectivity through ad hoc networking is likely to rapidly grow. In this paper we propose an algorithm and describe a developed prototype for connectivity between an ad hoc network running the ad hoc on-demand distance-vector protocol and a wired IP network where mobile IP is used for mobility management. Implementation issues and performance metrics are also discussed.

    Mobility of user devices connecting to the Internet is of major interest in today’s research in networking. Users with portable devices, like laptops and personal digital assistants (PDA), connecting to foreign networks in the Internet want the same functionality as when connected to the home network, as well as accessibility through the home IP address. Ad hoc networking is also of major importance for connectivity between communicating mobile hosts without backbone infrastructure and for connectivity to access points. For the users as well as for the applications, network mobility should be transparent. The usage of the ad hoc network or the wired IP network should also be managed by the networking software and hidden from applications and users. In this paper we propose and describe an integrated connectivity solution and its software implementation between an ad hoc network running the Ad Hoc On- Demand Distance-Vector Protocol and a wired IP network where Mobile IP is used for mobility management. With the usage of ad hoc networking, a mobile host will be able to use multiple foreign networks to enhance the communication performance. A proposal to multihomed Mobile IP is presented to achieve this.

    In recent years wireless Internet access and wireless communications between peers have become the focus of intensive research efforts in various areas of information and communication technologies. Mobility aspects, software development and support for mobile users are currently of major interest within this research area. The Mobile IP protocol is deployed for mobility management of hosts moving between networks. Ad hoc routing is also of major importance for connectivity between communicating mobile hosts without backbone infrastructure. In this paper we propose and describe an integrated connectivity solution and its software implementation between an ad hoc network running the Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance-Vector Protocol (AODV) and a wired IP network where Mobile IP is used for mobility management. The article also describes a project called Mobile City in which our software solutions and support infrastructure are tested and validated.
