Impulse buying tendencies among online shoppers in Sweden2017Ingår i: Journal of Research in Interactive Marketing, ISSN 2040-7122, Vol. 11, nr 4, s. 416-431Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to characterize consumers with high impulse buying tendency (IBT) by comparing them with low-IBT consumers in an online shopping context.

Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected through a postal survey to a random sample of Swedish citizens, resulting in 144 responses, which were analysed statistically.

Findings: Results indicate that high-IBT consumers, compared to those with low IBT, are on average younger, more likely to be female and more frequent online shoppers with higher levels of trust in the internet. However, they seem more likely than low-IBT consumers to abandon their online shopping carts before completing the purchase, often because of need uncertainty.

Practical implications: The findings can give retailers a better understanding of consumers with high IBT and thereby increase the possibility to target and communicate with them more effectively. This is an interesting opportunity as both multi-channel shopping and impulse buying behaviour is likely to become even more common in the future.

Originality/value: The study contributes to the understanding of impulsive consumers, as it addresses the role of situational and socio-demographic attributes of high-IBT consumers compared to low-IBT consumers. The differences in online purchases, intentions to buy fashion online, shopping cart abandonment and trust in the internet suggest that even if IBT is a relatively stable and general personal trait, the tendencies to act on buying impulses may be more context-specific.

Benefits and barriers for the use of digital channels among small tourism companies2019Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, ISSN 1502-2250, E-ISSN 1502-2269, Vol. 19, nr 1, s. 27-46Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to identify and explain perceived benefits and barriers for the use of digital channels by tourism companies in Swedish Lapland. Data were collected through exploratory interviews and an online survey to tourism companies in the region, most of which are small firms. Through factor analysis, we identified four barriers (Financial risk, Time constraints, External environment, and Lack of IT expertise and strategy) and three benefits (Internal efficiency, Marketing and competition, and Financial benefit) connected to the use of digital channels for customer communication. Results suggest that having staff with work time specifically reserved for working with digital channels, rather than trying to manage this alongside other tasks, increases the perceived benefits and decreases barriers related to Information and Communication (ICT) use. Moreover, analysis shows that the most important factors explaining tourism firms’ intentions to use digital channels are the perceived benefits connected to marketing and competition, as well as the perceived financial risk, which works as a barrier. Contrary to expectations, time constraints had a significant positive correlation with the intention to use digital channels. This implies that tourism firms in Swedish Lapland increasingly recognize the necessity of investing time in online communications in order to attract more visitors.

Granular Flow and Segregation Behavior2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    1. Purpose of the presentation. Granular materials such as grain, gravel, powder or pellets can be thought as intermediate state of matter: They can sustain shear like a solid up to a point, but they can also flow (Behringer 1995). However, differences in particulate sizes, shapes or densities have been known to cause segregation when granular materials are flowing. Surface segregation has often been studied. The mechanisms of segregation on a surface are described in many articles (Makse 1999)(Gray, Gajjar et al. 2015)(Lumay, Boschini et al. 2013). Descriptions of segregation behaviour of granular flow below surfaces are less common. Literature related to bulk flow mostly describe a bulk containing a variety of granular sizes (Engblom, Saxén et al. 2012)(Jaehyuk Choi and Arshad Kudrolli and Martin,Z.Bazant 2005). Warehouses such as silos or binges constitute major segregation and mixing points in many granular material transport chains. Such warehouses also subject the granular media to flow or impact induced stresses. Traceability in these kind of continues or semi continues granular flow environments face many challenges. Adding in-situ sensors, so called PATs, is one way to trace material in a granular flow. It is, however, difficult to predict if the sensors experience the same physical stresses as the average granules do if the PATs segregate. To contain required electronics, these sensors with casings may need to be made larger than the bulk particles it is supposed to follow. It is therefore important to understand when larger particles segregate and how to design sensor casings to prevent segregation. However segregation of larger sized or different shaped particles added as single objects to homogeny sized particle flow has, to our knowledge not yet been studied and that is the purpose of this study.2. Results. We show the significant factors which affect segregation behaviour and how these modify segregation behaviour. Depending on shape on silo and type of flow during discharge we also show how shape, size and density on individual grains is depending on velocity rate in granular flow. 3. Research Limitations/Implications. The time consuming method of manually retrieving data of each individual particle and surrounding bulk material limit the volume of data that can be retrieved. Further research will implement Particle Image Velocimetry technology (PIV) and customised software to analyse metadata from experiments in a much more efficient way.4. Practical implications. Practical outcome as a result of this research is connected to the ability to trace batches in continues and semi continues supply chains in time and space. The possibility to design a decision model to a specific supply chain for more customized controlled quality and, as far as we know, completely new possibilities related root cause analyses of quality issues in the production or supply chain.5. Value of presentation. Even if the research is made in relation to local mining industry and the supply chain related to iron ore pellets, based on their value of this research, the greatest value is expected to pharmaceutical or any law and regulation controlled industry where it is such efficient traceability of any product on the market is essential.2. Method. Experiments have been performed using granules of different shapes and densities to study flow and segregation behaviour. The experiments have been performed in a transparent 2D model of a silo, designed to replicate warehouses along an iron ore pellets distribution chain. Bulk material consisting of granules representing iron ore have been discharged together with larger objects of different sizes representing sensors or RFID tags. Shape, size and density are modified on the larger objects while studying mixing, flow behaviour and segregation tendencies using video. Video analyses have been used to measure the flow speed and flow distribution of the bulk and of the larger objects. The video material and individual particles is then statistically analysed to clarify significant factors in segregation behaviours related to the size, form and density of the particles. The results are based on Design Expert, Minitab and customized Matlab software.

Implementation of public e-procurement in Swedish government entities2009Ingår i: 2009 International Multiconference on Computer Science and Information Technology: (IMCSIT 2009) ; Mragowo, Poland, 12 - 14 October 2009 / [ed] M. Ganzha; M. Paprzycki, Piscataway, NJ: IEEE Communications Society, 2009, Vol. 4, s. 315-319Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

An increasing number of organizations in the public sector are beginning to adopt e-procurement, which its benefits (e.g., to reduce costs through increased efficiency in the procurement function) are well known by businesses. The purpose of this paper is to assess the implementation of e-procurement concept within Swedish government authorities during 2001 and 2008. A qualitative research approach was applied, and a longitudinal study was conducted. Data were collected in 2001 and 2008 through structured personal telephone interviews with 15 central government agencies. Results show that the implementation of e-procurement has developed substantially during recent years, but Swedish government authorities have still not yet adopted and utilized e-procurement to its full potential. Benefits and challenges were identified. The implementation and use of e-procurement were also found to have an impact on the buying behavior, i.e., on the buying process, the selection criteria and the buying center.

Exploring Quality Challenges and the Validity of Excellence Models2016Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management, ISSN 0144-3577, E-ISSN 1758-6593, Vol. 36, nr 10, s. 1201-1221Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose is to identify and explore important quality-related challenges facing organizations, and how current excellence models incorporate these challenges.Methodology: The article is based on a Delphi study in Swedish organizations, 49 challenges were generated and ranked according to importance. The top 10 ranked challenges were compared to the principles of four excellence models.Findings: The excellence models seem to still be relevant since their content matches many of the challenges identified. The MBNQA and the SIQ models were found to have the most comprehensive coverage, while the ISO model had limited coverage. Research Limitations/Implications: Three areas for further research were identified: 1) how QM can evolve in different contexts with varying needs in terms of adaptive and explorative capabilities, 2) the interfaces of QM and sustainability, and ways to understand how customers and stakeholders can be active contributors to improvements and 3) the roles of the owners and board of directors in QM, and how to organize and distribute responsibilities of the QM work.Practical and Social Implications: Three important challenges could be addressed in upcoming revisions of excellence models: 1) making QM a strategic issue for company owners; 2) involving customers in the improvement activities; and 3) developing processes that are robust, while still easily adaptable.Originality/Value: The Delphi study has identified upcoming challenges in the QM area based on input from 188 quality professionals.

    Abstract [en]

Complex construction projects in the infrastructure sector are often beset with delays, which cause benefit shortfalls and increased costs. Prior project management literature and practice have mostly adopted a traditional control-focused approach, but recent research suggests that complex projects need more flexible practices to manage inevitable project change. Thus, the objectives of this study were to develop and empirically test a model for flexibility-focused project management practices to improve time performance in complex projects in the infrastructure sector. Based on empirical data from 138 construction projects procured and managed by the Swedish Transport Administration, the structural equation model shows that complexity and collaboration drive explorative learning, which improves adaptation and thereby improves time performance. Hence, the empirical test verifies that flexibility-focused project management practices based on collaboration, explorative learning, and adaptation enhance time performance in complex projects in the infrastructure sector.

Collaborative Procurement Strategies for Infrastructure Projects: A Multiple Case Study2019Ingår i: Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Management, procurement and law, ISSN 1751-4304, Vol. 172, nr 5, s. 197-205Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

With the announcement to tender a project, several strategic decisions are made that have significant impact on the innovation and efficiency potential of a project. The purpose of this study is to investigate and compare how different types of integrative and collaborative procurement strategies may enhance the opportunities for improved efficiency and innovation in infrastructure projects. Hence, it contributes to the scientific debate on buyer-supplier relationships in relation to project performance. Furthermore, it guides public client organizations in steering explicitly for integration and innovation in their projects. Interview-based case studies of ten public infrastructure projects procured based on four different types of collaborative procurement strategies in Sweden and the Netherlands were conducted. The findings indicate that the duration of the collaboration is fundamental in setting the limits for innovation, and that early involvement as well as long-term commitments in maintenance open up for more innovation. Naturally, the potential for increased efficiency is higher than for innovation, and also occurs in collaborations with limited duration. The findings confirm the importance of a learning perspective on procurement strategies for public client organizations and show the importance of explicit considerations on incentives and project governance issues in the front-end phase of a project.

From Innovation to Internationalization: case study on the role of the owner-manager in a small technology-based firm2001Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The role of the owner-manager in small technology-based firms has not received sufficient attention in past research. The study, based on a longitudinal case study of Index-Braille a company located in northern Sweden, shows how a single person, the owner-manager, has been responsible for the whole process of the firm's development: from innovation of a product/technology to firm's internationalization and capture of more than 50 percent of the global market in a specific segment. Owner-manger's characteristics including motive and background, attitude, knowledge, skills, commitment, risk-taking, business-style and networking all contribute to a firm's success.

International inter-firm transfer of technology: decisions and interactions : case studies from Swedish firms' joint ventures and licensing operations in China1994Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The technological assets of a firm are one of the main sources of its competitive power. In recent decades, the transfer of technology has become an important element of international business, sometimes as the explicit objective of international transaction, at other times, as the side effect of the sale/purchase of goods. Internationally, technological assets are valorized in productive activities and transferred through foreign direct investment (FDI) in the form of wholly-owned subsidiaries (intra-firm transfer) or indirectly, through joint ventures and licensing (inter-firm transfer). This study deals with the latter (IITT) and maintains that IITT is a complex growth and development process. Any manifest pattern in this process has to be understood and explained in light of not only all the elements but also the actors that are involved. As the main conceptual theme and purpose of the study, it is argued that IITT is not limited to the actions (decisions) of the firm supplying the technology, rather it is also the outcome of decisions taken by the enterprise receiving the technology as well as the interactions that take place between the technology-supplier firm (TS) and the technology-receiver firm (TR). It is further argued that IITT is a long dynamic process which develops through several stages. The study has a dual purpose: theoretical and empirical. On the one hand, it aims at conceptualizing IITT through model construction and, on the other, it seeks to find empirical support for the developed model in case studies of the Swedish firms transferring technology to China via joint venture and licensing in four different industries. The results of the study which support the model also point to special issues of technology transfer to China. Including the role of the government and commitment of the TS and TR. The tudy maintains that: IITT commences through a number of short-term exchanges but the process is a long-term relationship built upon mutual bonds; the interaction between TS and TR becomes institutionalized into a set of roles that each side expects the other to perform in terms of both responsibilities and decisions, and can thus involve both cooperation and conflict; lack of active commitment to the transfer process by either TS or TR is likely to result in less than effective transfer; the transfer of information is a necessary precondition for the effective IITT and the effectiveness of the transfer mode is dependent on the level of communication and mutual understanding achieved between TS and TR.

Internet and export marketing of SMEs: experiences of website use and perceptions among Swedish firms2001Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The study deals with Internet and the impact it has had on international marketing of small and medium sized firms. It consists of the following three parts: Internet and international marketing from marketplace to marketspace;Internet and internationalization of small and medium sized firms; Web site use and perception of export barriers among Swedish SMEs. While the first two parts discuss theoretical aspects and overview past research, part three consists of an empirical investigation of a sample of Swedish SMEs where the following three research questions are addressed: How do Web-owners and non Web-owners compare with respect to their perception of barriers/obstacles to export marketing? How do SMEs that have Web site view advantages of the Internet in terms of its contribution to firm's international activities? What areas of SME export marketing is most benefitted by the Web? The findings indicate that Web site owners are less affected by the organizational, psychological, operational and product/market barriers of international marketing. They regard Internet valuable to create good company image and reach foreign customers. Furthermore, they consider communication as the main area where Internet contributes to their international business activity.

The ethnocentric MNC and host-country traditions conflict between Toys"R"Us and the Swedish trade union1997Ingår i: Journal of Euromarketing, ISSN 1049-6483, E-ISSN 1528-6967, Vol. 6, nr 2, s. 99-105Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The ethnocentric policies of multinational corporations frequently come into conflict with host-country laws, norms and traditions. The article is a case of conflict in industrial relations involving the multinational firm, Toys"R"Us, and the Swedish trade union. When Toys"R"Us refused to go along with the Swedish norm of entering into a collective bargaining agreement, the Swedish trade union ordered its members to go on strike and to protest the ways the American company treats its Swedish employees.

The human resource dimension of international technology transfer identification and analysis of training needs1999Ingår i: Journal of Euromarketing, ISSN 1049-6483, E-ISSN 1528-6967, Vol. 7, nr 3, s. 79-93Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

As human resources play a crucial role in international transfer of technology (ITT), adequate training of personnel on both sides of the arrangement-the technology supplying (TS) and the technology receiving (TR) organization-becomes necessary. Developing the required skills and competence for a successful ITT requires not only the knowledge and teaching ability of the TS but also the knowledge and willingness of the TR to learn. Many of the problems encountered in training are due to inadequate identification and analysis of the training needs and attributes of thc training environment. This paper discusses the pivotal role of human resources in ITT and uses the experience of Swedish firms in China, through joint venture and licensing operations, both to conceptualize training and to highlight some of the crucial issues that practitioners need to look into in connection with identification and analysis of human resource training for ITT. Evidence identified planning, sharing the responsibility for training, appropriateness of training, motivation and experience, location, education prior to training, importance of R&D staff and post-training problems to be among the major issues.
