Moistening of the wood surface before planing for improved surface quality2016In: Wood Material Science & Engineering, ISSN 1748-0272, E-ISSN 1748-0280, Vol. 11, no 3, p. 156-163Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The roughness of a machined wooden surface is affected by a number of factors such as cutting tool geometry, machine settings and wood structure. The influence of wood structure on wood surface quality is difficult to control since the surface roughness is dependent on the local combination of density, grain direction and moisture content (MC). The greater the variation in wood features, the more difficult it is to find a combination of tools and machine settings that will give a high surface quality. The purpose was to study the impact of a surface wetting treatment before planing in order to reduce torn grain in the wood surface near knots in sawn timber of low MC. The study was based on a total of 120 specimens of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). To maximize the variation in grain orientation and density, the specimens contained both clear wood and knots. The results showed that when the surface was moistened before planing, chipped and torn grain in areas of deviating grain close to knots decreased. The response to wetting was rapid, wetting less than 30 s before planing gave as good an improvement as treatment time of 30 min or more.

Measurement of green plank shape for prediction and elimination of compression wood2002In: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research, ISSN 0282-7581, E-ISSN 1651-1891, Vol. 17, no 4, p. 377-384Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this study was to predict the amount and the distribution of compression wood (CW) within a Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] plank based on green plank curvature. The findings indicated a possibility of predicting the longitudinal distribution of CW from the green plank curvature. Areas free from CW showed a typical concave shape in relation to the centre of the log, while CW was present when a convex shape was shown. The larger the magnitude of convex curvature, the higher the concentrations of CW that could be found, and a larger fraction of dried planks was rejected due to excessive warp. This study also determined what information can be used to eliminate areas of high concentrations of CW by cutting and how cutting affects the grading results with respect to warp. Over 50% of the plank length showing a high concentration of CW (> 30% of the cross-cut volume) was successfully cut off. Cutting strategies based on predicted CW concentrations resulted in a 10-40% increase in accepted plank length.

    Abstract [sv]

Swedish auditors' view of auditing: doing things right versus doing the right things2006In: The European Accounting Review, ISSN 0963-8180, E-ISSN 1468-4497, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 89-114Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to describe and analyse the thought patterns of Swedish auditors with regard to the way in which they audit information provided by listed companies, and possible changes in their duties. Eighty-two auditors were interviewed using the repertory grid technique and open-ended interview questions. To check the stability in the thought patterns of the respondents, six retests were made and, to validate the findings, an expert panel and two reference groups consisting of auditors and other representatives of the accounting and auditing professions were consulted. Distinct patterns emerged in the mean grid of the thought patterns of all the respondents. One dimension was related to the time perspective, past versus future, and another to auditing practice. Auditors devote a relatively long time and considerable effort to objects that can be satisfactorily verified, but not to objects that they perceive as being of primary importance to investors and other stakeholders. This inconsistency in the thought patterns of the auditors is similar to the gap between auditing in practice and stakeholders' expectations of auditing, which is a phenomenon frequently found in previous research. Moreover, the auditors were very reluctant to make statements about any information except that elicited according to current practice. In addition to this traditional view, the auditors appear to be more concerned about their own situation than that of the parties they are meant to be protecting. Doing things right seems to be more important than doing the right things. That the auditors spend much time on objects that they themselves do not consider to be of primary importance for the investors and other stakeholders, and their unwillingness to change current practice is of great concern in Sweden, where there is a strong belief in self-regulation of the auditing profession.

Pre-bankrupt going concern warnings: prediction accuracy, extent and degree of wording ambiguity and phrasing patterns in Sweden2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – Previous research on going concern warnings has focused mainly on prediction accuracy, giving little attention to going concern warning ambiguity or treating the issue of how auditors phrase their going concern warnings in a cursory manner. This paper argues that these issues are interrelated and need to be considered jointly. The purpose of the present paper therefore is to measure auditors’ prediction accuracy, to determine how common going concern warning ambiguity is, to explore the phrasing of going concern warnings and to highlight any patterns found in this analysis. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on empirical evidence drawn from the most recent annual and audit reports of all Swedish limited companies’ that went bankrupt in 2010. The audit report sample consists of 4,718 companies, and the going concern warning sample consists of 797 companies.Findings –Consistently with previous research, the findings demonstrate that Swedish auditors issue going concern warnings only in extremis and that it is not uncommon for the going concern warnings to be phrased ambiguously. The findings also reveal that going concern warnings can be categorized as clear, medium or fuzzy with several subordinate variations within those main patterns. Originality/value – Within the relatively unexplored field of going concern warning ambiguity, this study is based on a larger sample than that of the few existing previous studies. The findings provide a fine-grained understanding of the complex phenomenon of wording ambiguity, showing that in an audit context where the phrasing of going concern warnings is elective, where most firms are small and medium-sized and where auditors are required to assess if shareholders’ equity is spent partially or in full, ambiguous going concern warnings are both frequent and varied.Key words Audit report, accuracy, bankruptcy, going concern warnings, phrasing patterns, wording ambiguity, SwedenPaper type: Research paper

Cultural Impacts on the Managing of Knowledge Sharing Processes: A Qualitative Study of Swedish Banks in Shanghai, China2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The globalization of economies and the technology development have both increased opportunities to businesses as well as challenges. Multicultural workforces and other values in the market compared with the home market lead to complexity in the management control when a business establishes abroad. Individuals’ nationalities impact their behaviors and values and it is the management’s task to coordinate the members’ activities in a way that is beneficial for the company. The banking industry is a knowledge-intensive industry, meaning the employee’s knowledge is the bank’s biggest resource. To create organizational knowledge, it is important that the knowledge is shared within the company. Effective knowledge sharing is hard to accomplish in a multicultural company since it is depending on communication between the employees which can be aggravated by cultural differences. The more distant the involved national cultures are, the harder it will be to achieve intercultural communication.

The Swedish culture is very different from the Chinese culture. China’s economy has developed fast since it opened up to the world market in the 70’s. Today, several Swedish companies are established in China. The purpose with this study is to examine how the Chinese culture impacts Swedish knowledge-intensive companies established in China and to increase the understanding on how to overcome the cultural barriers that are affecting the managing of knowledge sharing. Cultural clashes can imply risk to a company if they affect the efficiency of the internal processes and must therefore be avoided. This field study was conducted in Shanghai, China at Swedish banks to see how they worked with the cultural differences.

Interviews were made with staff of both Chinese and Nordic heritages to see how the cultural differences impacted their operations. The results showed that there are several cultural clashes that affect effective knowledge sharing processes within the companies. The management tries to implement the Swedish way of working in the branches, but the Chinese culture has a strong impact on the communication channels and it creates confusions and misunderstanding between the Nordic and Chinese employees. Cultural understanding and adjustment to the cultural conditions have been shown from earlier researches to reduce cultural clashes. This study supports those arguments by showing that a higher level of intercultural communication leads to increasing cultural understanding and a quicker adjustment to the organization’s way of working. The study also showed that the national culture’s impact on individual behavior was stronger to individuals that have had less foreign exchanges. The study contributes with suggestions of enlightening cultural differences more by formal meetings to increase the cultural understanding within the companies, as well as intercultural team works over department units should be implemented.

Superplastisk formning av plåt1990Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

At Nuiteq, an application is developed using the company's own Snow akesuite, which allows multiple users to make use of a multi-touch surface to play simulated boardgames. The purpose of this project is to develop an interface for this application. How to present the possible interactions to the users will be examined. Several new features to the application are developed to create a better interface. These include a synchronization zone object to make network transmissions easier, a way to place markers on game objects, a pop-up menu containing relevant functions for a given object, a stack object to handle collections of objects and a content view to easily manage a stack's contents. This application will only simulate three specic board games, no other games are considered in the development of the interface. The result is a simple, highly usable interface that gives users control over the simulated games.

1 shade of grey: simplify to excel in sketching for industrial design engineers2014In: Design Education & Human Technology Relations: proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education, University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands 4th - 5th September 2014 / [ed] Arthur Eger; Ahmed Kovacevic; Brian Perkinson, Glasgow: Design Research Society, 2014, p. 372-376, article id 196Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sketching is a fast way to explore or communicate ideas and can be done instantly with almost noplanning. Sketches are quick, dynamic and iterative. They can be made in many ways but aretraditionally created by using pen and paper. This is one of the most efficient tools to trigger thecreative process and keep it going. In the educational context where sketching and artistic skills are acompromise between traditional engineering and traditional Design education some problems can beidentified. At the Industrial Design engineering program at Lulea University of Technology (LTU) thestudents are accepted on their grades only, and students attending sketch classes at LTU come from awide range of backgrounds. As a result of this the sketching education must be tailored for studentsranging from experienced level to inexperienced. When there are a lot of students and time is limited, learning activities must be implemented according to this reality. A way to speed up the learningprocess is to reduce the cognitive load. Too many possibilities and factors confuse students that areinexperienced in the field. The activities should also help keeping the rate of practice up and eliminatethings that are not part of the intended learning outcome. This paper shows how a simple change oftools in the sketching class makes huge impact on the progress and discusses the mechanisms behindthe effect. Keywords: Mechanical, engineer, creativity, sketching, design

Being in the space for teaching-and-learning: the meaning of preceptorship in nurse education2000Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to illuminate student nurses' and nurses' lived experience of preceptorship and develop an understanding of the meaning of being a preceptor and of teaching and learning in a preceptor-preceptee relationship during student nurses' clinical education on hospital wards. A phenomenological approach was applied to study the experiences of those who are living in an ongoing experience of preceptorship. Seventeen student nurses and the seventeen nurses acting as their personal preceptor volunteered to participate. To illuminate their experience of preceptorship, tape recorded narrative interviews were conducted, transcribed verbatim and analysed by using a phenomenological-hermeneutic method. According to the findings, the student nurses disclosed the meaning of being precepted in themes related with their being directed towards increased competence and with the feelings and bodily sensations that accompanied the learning, a learning that occurred when performing practical nursing actions. The student nurses learning was facilitated by preceptors who created a space for their learning and in that space provided concrete illustrations, exercised control and managed to find the peace and quite needed for reflection. The meaning of being a preceptor revealed a balancing to find solutions to the problem of interrupting the time for nursing when including the student in one's daily work, as well as increased awareness of the processes of learning. In good examples of preceptoring the meaning of preceptoring was understood as the preceptors sheltering and facilitating the student nurses when learning by the use of teaching strategies. The meaning of preceptorship was compared with a didactic model, where the student-preceptor relationship formed the basis of the processes of teaching-and-learning, which embraced intentions, acting, lived-experience and reflections. Further, it is demonstrated that preceptorship supports the student nurses and the preceptors increasing their competence in nursing, parallel with the student nurses reducing their dependence on preceptor support.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Nurses' lived experience of being a preceptor2000In: Journal of Professional Nursing, ISSN 8755-7223, E-ISSN 1532-8481, Vol. 16, no 4, p. 228-39Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Registered nurses' lived experience of preceptorship was studied in this phenomenological study. To illuminate the meaning of registered nurses' experience of being a preceptor for student nurses, individual tape-recorded interviews were conducted with 17 registered nurses. They narrated their experience of being a personal preceptor for student nurses during practical training on a hospital unit, and the interviews transcribed verbatim were analyzed phenomenological-hermeneutically. The analysis revealed two main themes (1) including the student in their daily work and (2) increasing awareness of the process of learning, as well as six other themes, which contributed to a new comprehension of the meaning of being a preceptor. All the themes were related to the ongoing preceptor-preceptee relationship. The preceptors' thinking on past experiences and their ideas of nursing care in the future were present simultaneously. Nurses acting as preceptors were perceived as conscious individuals, demanding a balance of their daily work responsibility with increased awareness of the professional demands of nursing care. Preceptors gained increased awareness of and a desire to fulfill the student nurses' varied learning needs and increased awareness of their own learning process

    Abstract [en]

In this first part of a research project a phenomenological approach was applied to understanding student nurses' experience of preceptorship. The lived experience of seventeen student nurses learning within a preceptor-preceptee relationship on hospital wards formed the basis of the study. Tape-recorded interviews were conducted, transcribed and analysed. The phenomenological hermeneutic analysis revealed three themes of meaning central to the lived experience of learning. These were (a) directing learning; (b) learning in practical action and (c) feeling in learning. The themes included six sub-themes with internal variations. The results indicate that learning, as a phenomenon, could be understood as being in different modes of learning, including directing learning, learning in practical actions and feeling in learning. Each theme was also found to be inherent in the others in an ongoing changeable process. The findings were compared with Aristotle's five modes of learning and revealed that the student nurses' learning embraced scientific knowledge, technical skills, practical wisdom and limited intuition. The study may provide nurse educators with some insight into student nurses' learning by being in real-life situations and performing nursing actions within a preceptor-preceptee relationship

    Abstract [en]

Student nurses' experience of preceptorship was the focus of this second part of a phenomenological study. The aim was to illuminate student nurses' lived experience of the preceptor-preceptee relationship on hospital wards. A phenomenological-hermeneutic analysis was made of tape-recorded interviews with seventeen student nurses. The interpretation process culminated in four themes, namely: (a) creating space for learning; (b) providing concrete illustrations; (c) exercising control and (d) seeking reflection. Each theme included sub-themes with internal variations. The theme 'creating space for learning' was understood as basic in relation to the other themes and as the foundation of student learning and preceptoring. The ongoing process of preceptoring meant that the preceptors acted as role models, were with the students and also exercised control. Control was directed both to patient safety and to student learning. The students' 'seeking reflection' included attempts to find peace and quiet either by themselves or with the preceptor. The reflection together with the preceptor facilitated the students' transformation of knowledge, from the specific situation to a general knowledge and increased the value of learning.

The meaning of preceptorship: nurses' lived experience of being a preceptor2001In: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 33, no 4, p. 530-40Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM OF THE STUDY: This phenomenological study is aimed at illuminating nurses' lived experience of the process of preceptoring and the meaning of preceptorship in a Swedish context. METHODS: Seventeen nurses from the North of Sweden with varied previous experience of preceptorship volunteered to participate. Their narratives, describing their experience of being a personal preceptor for a student nurse during practical training on a hospital ward in the third year of a 3-year diploma programme within a university college of nursing in Sweden, were transcribed verbatim. A phenomenological-hermeneutic interpretation disclosed the themes 'sheltering the students when learning' and 'facilitating the students' learning', together with eight sub-themes, which created an understanding of the meaning of preceptorship. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION: The meaning of preceptorship was understood as reducing the risk of the students learning helplessness and empowering the students when learning in practice. The meaning of preceptorship highlighted the need for further preceptor support and development of the role of the preceptor. On the basis of the findings, suggestions were made to increase the preceptors' awareness of values in nursing practice and use of pedagogical strategies in the process of preceptoring. Through such strategies a reciprocal development of the preceptors' and the faculty's knowledge may take place, to the best advantage of the students' learning and the development of the profession

Projekt: Neonatal omvårdnad i hemmet med stöd av IT2010Other (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
