    Abstract [en]

    The main focus of this thesis has been the noise level inside combat boat 90, CB 90H acommon boat in the Swedish navy. The stakeholder of this project has been Dockstavarvet,the developer of the boat. Almost all parts of the project have been carried out at thecompany headquarters in Docksta, except some testing which occurred at a laboratory atLuleå University of Technology. The development of these aluminium boats are goingtowards having higher speed with more powerful engines and at the same time tougherrequirements for the noise level. This thesis aimed to evaluate the transporter room wherethe marines are stationed while transport. The current noise level is above 85 dB(A) whichexceeds the recommended noise level for hearing protection which is 80 dB(A). In recentyears the fire regulations have increased, to meet these stricter regulations Dockstavarvetwanted to see an improvement without using anything that could be classified asflammable. This limited the project to focus on changing the aluminium structure andusing the fire approved viscous compound Noxudol, which is used for noise control today.To evaluate the situation two research questions was necessary to answer”where does thenoise origin and how does it propagate?” To answer these questions a large study ofpervious noise control assessments was conducted and a search for similar projects.Through the research it was determined the CB 90H has two sources contributing to thehigh noise level, water streaming against the hull and the engines, two water jets. Each ofthese sources contribute with a high noise level, the hulls contact with water gives thehighest dB(A) value while the engines contribute with a low frequency noise and thehighest dB value. In this thesis the goal have been to lower the dB(A) level which for themost parts are the requirement in a new development of a vessel. Therefore the main focusof this thesis has been to reduce the noise from contact with water and secondly the enginenoise. A literature study was conducted to understand how these noises could be dampedand if there is any suitable methods. The research showed increasing the stiffness of themain girders would attune the vibrations from the engines. To reduce noises which occurfrom the contact with water, weight needed to be added for parts of the bottom hull plates.After this point the engine noise was unprioritized and the focus was put on detaildevelopment for the radiated noise from hull plates. Due to practical reasons, testing on aCB 90H in water wasn’t possible. Therefore a test rig was built; the test rig was a section ofthe lower hull structure in the transporter room. The test contained three differentconfigurations, bolting plates on the bottom hull plates, adding a layer Noxudol betweenthe plates and finally spraying the test rig with Noxudol. The test showed an expected effectwith the added plates but also showed that the viscous compound had no effect betweenthe plates and small effect when it was sprayed. The effect from adding the plates werenotable and will improve the situation but with a cost of some additional weight. Therecommendations for Dockstavarvet is to further examine the possibility to increase girderstiffness in engine room and search for an more effective way to reduce the radiating noisefrom hull plates.

    Abstract [en]

    To enhance the downlink performance for packet data services in WCDMA a High Speed Downlink Shared Channel is being developed. This channel is divided between users in time and a scheduling algorithm controls the allocation of the channel among the users. The choice of scheduling algorithm will have a large impact on the system behaviour. The aim of this study is to evaluate some fundamentally different scheduling algorithms from system and user point of view. The possibility to guarantee user quality by adding a Quality of Service requirement to a scheduling algorithm is investigated, as well as the possibility to differentiate user quality by means of scheduling. Results and conclusions are based on simulations for a macro cell environment. They show that there is a trade-off between system throughput and user fairness. Scheduling algorithms that use information on channel conditions are more efficient than those who don't. Setting absolute Quality of Service requirements is only achievable through the use of admission control. Without admission control, service differentiation is therefore only possible through relative differences of Quality of Service demands. It is shown that such a differentiation is achievable, however it costs in terms of system throughput.

    Det här examensarbetet har haft som syfte att utvärdera den nya layouten för tillverkningen av radiobasstationen RBS 2000 (Aladdin). Den ökande tillverkningsvolymen som förväntas hos RBS 2000, har medfört ett alldeles nytt tillverkningssätt vilket i hög grad är automatiserat. En sådan grad av automatisering innebär betydande investeringar och risker, det har därför funnits extra stora krav på att systemet skall fungera problemfritt och optimalt redan från produktionsstart.

    Produktionssimulering är ett verktyg för att konstruera en logisk modell av ett verkligt tillverkningssystem och utföra experiment på denna modell. Allteftersom förståelsen för systemet ökar kan mode11ens validitet förbättras, experiment utföras och systemet optimeras.

    Studien har avgränsats till att analysera två viktiga delar av RBS 2000 produktionen: (1) bantransportören vid transceivertillverkningen samt (2) flödeslinjen för stativmonteringen. För respektive tillverkningsavsnitt har en simuleringsmodell tagits fram. Studien av de bägge systemen har därefter följt en försöksplan där kritiska parametrar identifierats och optimerats. Arbetet har haft som målsättning att uppskatta tillverkningskapacitet, identifiera problem och begränsningar samt slutligen ge rekommendationer för optimalt utnyttjande av systemen.

    1. Bantransportören vid transceivertillverkningen De empiriska resultaten från studien har identifierat det optimala antalet paletter för bantransportören samt givit förslag på åtgärder för att möjliggöra den förväntade tillverkningsvolymen på 300 transceiverenheter per arbetsdag. Simuleringsresultaten har dessutom kompletterats med ett teoretiskt avsnitt om styralgoritmer för den specifika typen av bantransportör som studerats.

    2. Flödeslinjen för stativmonteringen Eftersom stativlinjen är avsedd för produktion av flera olika modeller har två olika tillverkningsmetoder utvärderats, mixad respektive batchtillverkning. Metoderna beskrivs i ett teoriavsnitt samt empiriskt i simuleringsmodellen, där simulerings- studien styrker det teoretiska resonemanget. Empiriskt har det även kunnat konstateras att kapacitetsbegränsningen förflyttas beroende på modell samt tillverkningsstrategi. Den teoretiska referensramen såväl som den empiriska studien redovisar olika metoder för att optimera respektive tillverkningsstrategi .

    Förhoppningsvis kan arbetet ge värdefulla rekommendationer och synpunkter inför det fortsatta förbättringsarbetet samt fungera som erfararenhetsbas vid såväl företag som högskola.

    Governance for sustainable development of major European transport corridors: The Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T core network corridor2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Intermodal road, rail, air and sea transport networks across the European Union (EU) calledTrans-European Networks for Transport (TEN-T) are currently being implemented. Keyelements, which should be implemented by 2030, are the most strategic TEN-T Core networkcorridors. These nine corridors are expected to enhance smoothness and sustainability oftransport across the EU, thereby enhancing cohesion between EU nations, and relate to non-EU nations. In the EU Regulation 1315/2013 a governance framework for implementation ofthe Core network corridors is outlined, which mainly involves appointment of a Europeancoordinator for each corridor, establishment of Corridor forums for consultations, andformulation of work plans and follow-up measures.This framework is now being implemented in practice. A recognised challenge in the processis engaging the numerous, diverse stakeholders. A possible solution is to introduceappropriate elements of complementary governance. Thus, in this doctoral research, suitablecomplementary governance to support the sustainable development of a Core networkcorridor was investigated. Complementary governance, a concept that was developed andrefined during the project, refers here to additional governance in relation to the governanceframework described for the EU Core network corridors in the EU Regulation 1315/2013.To address an identified gap in knowledge on the nature and utility of complementarygovernance a series of studies was carried out. The studies included a study of relevantacademic literature, studies of EU transport policy and implementation documents regardinggovernance and sustainability, a survey of views of Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridorforum participants, and interviews with stakeholders in the Baltic Sea region. These studiescollectively constitute a case study, focusing on the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corenetwork corridor, of the need for, and if a need is present the optimal design of,complementary governance in the process of sustainable development of a Core networkcorridor.The main findings of the studies are that the implementation process of the Core networkcorridors could benefit from complementary governance measures, mainly to increaseinclusiveness, which is crucial for a sustainable development. Complementary governancecould both deepen and broaden stakeholder awareness and involvement. This may haveseveral advantages, such as increasing possibilities for stakeholders to influence the processand benefit from the corridor, align activities, and promote cooperation and learning betweenstakeholders. Moreover, including stakeholders who are based outside the corridors mayimprove distributive aspects of the investments and reduce risks of focusing attention tooclosely on the corridors per se. However, broadening stakeholder inclusion also hasdisadvantages, as it increases the complexity of the process, which may impair itseffectiveness, and may lead to unrepresentative involvement due to differences instakeholders’ interests, administrative capacities and power. It also increases requirements forcoordination.The nature of complementary governance is multifaceted and related to diverse dimensions ofgovernance, such as processes, stakeholder participation and implementation documents. For complementary governance measures a flexible and task-specific multi-level design isemphasised, which may involve various types of engagement mechanisms. Further, thefindings showed a need to extend previously recognised types of public engagementmechanisms based on communication, consultation and participation in the decision-makingstage, by recognising another category, named stakeholder exchange. This category ischaracterised by stakeholder cooperation and collaboration in an implementation stage wheremain goals and policies already are in place.Areas for complementary governance in the implementation process of the Core networkcorridors were indicated in the interview study. They consisted of extended involvement ofprivate stakeholders, extended involvement of regional and local stakeholders, extendedinvolvement of stakeholders geographically external to the immediate corridor, and extendedinformation both generally and specifically (i.e. directed information to specific stakeholders).Several complementary governance measures that could potentially improve implementationof the Core network corridors were raised in the interviews, ranging from minor adjustment inthe existing process to entirely new solutions. These ideas correspond well to the indicatedareas and provide robust foundations for further discussion.Thus, findings from the research suggest several governance measures to systematicallyinvolve and engage diverse stakeholders in the Core network corridor implementationprocess. However, before introducing such measures, they should be assessed together withexisting governance measures, to avoid overlapping or contradictory initiatives, possiblyusing policy packaging approaches, where policies are combined and analysed together toachieve a desired overall outcome. Proposals for future research and practices are presented.

    Abstract [en]

    Transport plays essential roles in almost all economic activities and our daily lives. Transport flows are often agglomerated in soͲcalled transport corridors linking urban and/or commercially important areas.Clearly, it is desirable for transport to be efficient and sustainable, thus there are several onͲgoing initiatives to develop major, often transnational, transport corridors.Diverse stakeholders are affected by and/or involved in the development of these corridors, including travellers, transport buyers,transport service providers and transport authorities (local, regional, national and transnational). Governance of the corridors can be regarded as the interactive involvement of these stakeholders in their development and subsequent management.This is a licentiate by publications based on a covering essay that summarises and synthetises four articles. The topic focuses on the development of a framework for designing governance structures formajor transport corridors, by examining the variables that should be considered, the structural and procedural organisational possibilities, and both stakeholders’ participation and interactions. A qualitative research approach has been applied, as deeper understanding of the underlying issues is needed. Several studies have been performed, in conjunction with the Bothnian green logistic corridorproject, to illustrate key concerns. These studies have included literature reviews, studies of documents describing governance of major European transport initiatives, and interviews with key individualsinvolved in the development of European transport corridors. An international study has been established and supervised to gather experiences from other research projects, including an open workshop for discussion between representatives of various stakeholder groups. In addition, a casestudy of the Bothnian corridor has been performed, including focus group discussions with principal stakeholders.Main findings from the literature studies concern both the design of governance structures and their socioͲpolitical integration. The findings show that there is no universal solution for governance structuresas they have to be adapted to the social, economic and political context, and should have a sufficient flexibility to meet changing requirements. They also show that collaboration between public, private and other stakeholders to address issues earlier handled by a single authority is becoming increasinglycommon, also within the field of transport, particularly when public investment budgets are restricted. Another main finding is that broad stakeholder inclusion is advantageous and engaged leadership crucial for a successful outcome. Both structural and procedural aspects of a governance structure influence theoutcome and need to be considered when designing one. The international study and the workshop confirmed most of these literature findings and additionally highlighted the need for clear goals, objectives and rules for collaboration. Stakeholders´ diverse needs of connecting to a governancestructure were discussed in the workshop. The document studies and the interviews enhanced knowledge of European transport corridor establishment and management practices.

    The European Commission has adopted a proposal to develop the trans-European network for freight and passenger transports (TEN-T). A multimodal core transport network for Europe has been proposed, as part of the TEN-T (including all modes of transport; roads, railways, airports and canals). As parts of the core network, ten core network corridors have been appointed. They will be used as instruments for implementing the entire core network. European Coordinators will facilitate the implementation of the core network corridors, in cooperation with corridor platforms to be established by Member States concerned. There is no overall solution to how this core network with partly appointed network corridors would be managed, and how the corridor platforms will be synthesized and inter-organized to accomplish seamless transnational transport solutions.This literature review pinpoints three areas of specific importance for future work in creating transport corridor management structures. First, broad stakeholders inclusion, where formalized partnerships in agreements are suggested. Second, several ways of communication between stakeholders to ensure common progress, and third, to complement the dominant causation processes with effectuation processes to capture the stakeholders own driving forces towards common goals.

    Ridsport är en hobby som engagerar tusentals personer. För några av dessa personer är det en dröm att få göra denna hobby till sitt yrke. Till branschens baksidor hör dock låga löner, långa arbetsdagar och svartarbete. Som en följd av detta påverkas både pension, sjuk-och semesterersättning. I många fall finns inga försäkringar som täcker uppkomna skador och olyckor i arbetet. Trots detta väljer en stor skara människor att arbeta med hästar. Studiens syfte är att ta reda på vilka motivationsfaktorerna inom hästbranschen är, trots ovanstående problem. Fem kvinnliga hästskötare har intervjuats i studien. Samtliga respondenter har arbetat i tävlings-och träningsstall med inriktning hoppning. Resultatet har analyserats med hjälp av Herzbergs tvåfaktorteori och Oldham och Hackmans arbetsdesignteori. Resultatet visar att det finns ett gemensamt mönster av motivationsfaktorer för samtliga respondenter. Dessa motivationsfaktorer är intresse, sociala relationer, utvecklingsmöjligheter och arbetets överensstämmelse med medarbetaren.

    I Kiruna pågår en omfattande stadsomvandlingsprocess. Den orsakas av att gruvbolaget LKAB arbetar med en ny huvudnivå i underjordsgruvan för järnmalm. Malmkroppen lutar in under staden och brytningen ger sprickbildning som innebär att delar av staden, bland annat Kiruna centrum, måste flyttas om gruvverksamheten ska kunna fortgå. Järnvägen, E10 samt väg 870, Nikkaluoktavägen, måste också få nya sträckningar.I samband med att E10 ska få ny sträckning har det diskuterats om E10 ska fortsätta utgöra genomfart genom nya centrala Kiruna eller om en förbifart ska byggas, nära centrum (tangentiell förbifart) eller lite längre från själva bebyggelsen.Syftet med detta PM är att genom studie av forskning och utredningar öka kunskapen om vilka effekter valet av förbifart eller genomfart kan få, och tillämpa dessa resonemang i fallet Kiruna.Utifrån de områden som analyserats har det framkommit att det finns både faktorer som talar för respektive mot en förbifart i Kiruna. Flera faktorer är för osäkra för att kunna beskriva konsekvenserna av. Genom att öka kunskapen om hur utbyggnad av trafiksystemen i Kiruna kan påverka utvecklingen, skapas ett bättre underlag för beslutsfattande.

    Kiruna står i dagsläget inför en stor utmaning då stora delar av staden måste flyttas till ett nytt läge för att gruvbrytningen ska kunna fortgå. Det är en unik samhällsplaneringsprocess som pågår som kräver insikt, nytänkade och samarbete med många aktörer.Den här rapporten utgör en översiktlig beskrivning av några former/kollektivtrafikstråk och bebyggelsestrukturer, samt dess konsekvenser för en långsiktigt hållbar stadsutveckling, med fallstudie i Kiruna. Problem som bör analyseras djupare har identifierats.Dagens strävan mot långsiktig hållbarhet, också i stadsplanering, talar för en koncentrerad bebyggelsestruktur i motsats till en utglesad struktur. Från ett vetenskapligt perspektiv finns det både för- och nackdelar med en kompakt stad, men en koncentrerad stad skapar bättre förutsättningar för korta avstånd inom staden, vilket främjar gående och cyklande, samt ger större möjligheter till attraktiva kollektiva transportsystem.Tre olika typer av bebyggelsestrukturer har studerats; gles struktur, blandad struktur och tät struktur. Gles struktur utgörs främst av villabebyggelse och tät struktur utgörs av bebyggelse med tydlig stadskaraktär, med flerbostadshus, affärslokaler m m.Tre olika scenarier för huvudsakliga utvecklingsstråk i Kiruna har studerats översiktligt; bandstruktur (målpunkter längs linje), fingerstruktur (nav med linjer ut från centrum som ”fingrar”) och slingstruktur (målpunkter längs ring). Det kollektiva trafiksystemet kan utgöra stommen i stråken. Stråken karaktäriseras av hög aktivitet av människor och händelser.Analysen av stråkstrukturer visar att de olika stråkstrukturerna samtliga är generellt bra som trafikstrukturer, men tar olika stor hänsyn till den befintliga bebyggelsen, därför kan man tänka sig att de är mer eller mindre användbara på kort eller lång sikt. Fingerstrukturen kan vara en tänkbar lösning på längre sikt, medan slingstruktur kan vara lämplig i närtid, och bandstruktur i en övergångsperiod alternativt på längre sikt. Det är viktigt att planera långsiktigt under hela stadsomvandlingsprocessen eftersom lokalisering av viktiga målpunkter och val av trafikstråk är beroende av varandra.Avseende bebyggelsestrukturer konstateras att en koncentrerad bebyggelse underlättar för attraktiva kollektivtrafiklösningar och ger närhet till service och nöjen och korta avstånd för gång- och cykeltrafikanter. Detta stödjer också jämställdheten. Gles bebyggelse ger å andra sidan generellt sett en hög tillgänglighet till grönområden. Med en koncentrerad bebyggelse minskar ytor för uppställning av fordon, släpvagnar och dylikt samt ytor för offentligt bruk för till exempel snöupplag.Trygghet i form av ett aktivt stadsliv med människor i rörelse stöder koncentration av bebyggelse. Trygghet i form av att vara känd i kvarteret, och att nya människor som rör sig i kvarteret noteras, är en fördel med gles bebyggelse. Gles bebyggelse kräver en högre markexploatering och leder till en högre energianvändning och emissioner totalt sett med längre transportsträckor. Gles bebyggelse skapar däremot förutsättningar för miljöer med låga lokala emissions- och bullerstörningar. Blandad bebyggelsestruktur ger goda förutsättningar för en ökad integration i samhället avseende socioekonomiska faktorer, och skapar en flexibel miljö för om- och tillbyggnad. Olika bebyggelsestrukturer har alla sin plats i en stad för att möta olika önskemål hos invånarna. Hur mycket som ska finnas av olika strukturer formas i en process mellan önskvärd samhällsutveckling och efterfrågan på olika strukturer.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper governance for developing main transport corridors in the European Union was examined by means of document- and literature studies. European Union transport policy documents were studied as well as legislation regarding development of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). One of the most strategic parts of the TEN-T, the Scandinavian – Mediterranean (ScanMed) transport corridor, was particularly studied with documents concerning the implementation of ScanMed. Qualitative content analyses have been conducted and three themes consisting of “governance organisation”, “actors” and “governance in practical implementation process” were studied.It was concluded that a broad range of stakeholders have to contribute in order to accomplish a well-functioning transport system. Accordingly the studied policy, legislative and implementation documents all concern governance matters in various ways. Depending on the actual transport initiative, and its objectives, stakeholder involvement can vary. A framework for governance arrangements for the most strategic parts of TEN-T, the Core network corridors is set in a regulation. A European coordinator was appointed for each Core network corridor and has an important role in facilitating the implementation. Such governance structure was already foreseen in earlier policy documents. Corridor forum is a new tool aiming to bring key stakeholders together for consultative purposes and in addition working groups can be connected to the Corridor forums. The policy and legislative documents have a focus on the responsibilities and activities for the European Commission and the concerned Member states. The importance of other stakeholders such as cities, ports, regional authorities, private actors is mentioned, but their activities are not explicitly stated in these formal European documents. However, participation of various stakeholders in the ScanMed Core network corridor implementation process is tangible, especially when concrete projects are discussed. Further, in the ScanMed Core network corridor implementation process the Corridor forum is explored as a new tool for bringing stakeholders together, progressively reaching an increasing number of stakeholders, including users of infrastructure in future stages. Encompassing eight countries and several modes of transport a large number of stakeholders are indicated. The idea of future ideas laboratories acting as meeting spots for development of the transport corridor on specific topics, and bringing a variety of stakeholders together, is interesting.A key challenge for future implementation of the ScanMed Core network corridor is the large number of stakeholders concerned by a transnational and multimodal transport system. Governance design to strengthen involvement of stakeholders in European transports initiatives such as the TEN-T should be encouraged. Suitable forums for cooperation and collaboration for inclusiveness for various actors need to be elaborated, where common overarching objectives need to be agreed upon. These forums have to be developed together with concerned stakeholders so that choice of forum is suitable due to its expected function. Key stakeholders which can actively contribute to progress and new ideas need to be connected to the process. And developed working groups, ideas laboratories and similar, on a geographical basis for parts of the corridor or for a specific topic, need to be adequately bridged to a European level.

    In this paper, stakeholders’ expected benefits and concerns are presented regarding the development of Core Network Corridors (CNCs) within the European transport initiative, the Trans-European Network for Transports. An interview study was conducted with 23 stakeholders from different parts of the society in the Baltic Sea area. The results show that stakeholders have a range of expectations, both positive and negative, for the development of the CNC. Stakeholders’ views were sorted into three categories based on the gathered data: matters that are already regulated; unregulated matters that often include vaguely defined responsibilities and require diverse stakeholder engagement for improvement; and matters for which there are concerns about negative outcomes. The results indicate (a) a need for cost-effective complementary governance, here described as additional governance measures to those regulated in the initial framework, (b) that a wider group of stakeholders than is currently involved is needed in the on-going implementation process. Additional regional and local level stakeholders, within and outside of the CNC, and private businesses, would enhance the benefits and/or mitigate negative implications of the developed CNCs, (c) an openness for complementary governance in the on-going CNC implementation process. This openness needs to be considered when developing models for policy packaging.

    When implementing major European transport corridors, such as the Core network corridors (CNC) which is a part of the European Trans-European Network for Transports (TEN-T), the number of stakeholders affected is huge. A governance framework for the CNC’s implementation was introduced in EU Regulation No. 1315/2013, and is now being enacted. Sustainable development and stakeholder involvement are crucial areas in the implementation. This interview study investigated the need for complementary governance, here meaning governance in addition to the governance framework set in the regulation. The interviews involved 23 individuals from the Baltic Sea Region, who are affiliated to the four categories public authority, infrastructure organisation/company, private company and other organisation. The results confirm the importance of an inclusive approach. Further, the results showed a need to ensure that all three social, economic and ecological dimensions of sustainability are considered. Summarising the interview results, four areas for attention in the further CNC implementation process were identified: more and directed information, extended involvement of private sector transport stakeholders, extended involvement of regional and local stakeholders, and involvement of stakeholders located geographically outside the immediate corridor. Complementary governance can be a tool to address these areas, as governance structures and processes can involve stakeholders and steer towards desired outcomes. The interviewees own ideas for complementary governance are presented in this paper.

    The CNC implementation is currently an on-going process and these results will be further utilised in the process, as a basis for stakeholder discussions of changes in practice.

    In this paper results are presented from document- and literature studies examining how the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development (economical, ecological and social) are used in the process of developing main transport corridors in the European Union.  Particular focus has been placed on the Scandinavian-Mediterranean (ScanMed) transport corridor, a strategic part of the trans-European network for transports (TEN-T). European Union transport policy documents were studied along with the legislation for TEN-T and documents regarding implementation of the ScanMed corridor.

    The paper highlights that the concept of sustainable development is used in a multifaceted way, sometimes indicating the overarching goal of sustainability, sometimes indicating certain dimensions, and sometimes referring to conducting efforts in a sustainable way. This implies that stakeholders are led to perceive the concept in various ways, influencing how measures are implemented and how the economic, ecological and social dimensions of sustainability are integrated. Reinforcing a holistic perspective of sustainability and sustainable development as integrating economic, ecological and social benefits for a desired development would avoid the perception of sustainability as merely addressing a specific dimension, like environmental concerns. In part this could be strengthened by clearly framing the particular dimensions of sustainability being addressed in different parts of major transport corridor documents, for example; “economic sustainability” or “social sustainability”.

    Abstract [en]

    This study was carried out as part of the research project Sustainable use of the subsurface (2017–2019). The project aims to support the sustainable use of the underground space, and to clarify new possibilities for how underground matters can be integrated into urban planning.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate how planning processes for facilities and other underground operations are carried out in Sweden, how the interaction between planning above and below ground works, how underground information is handled in different types of projects, and indicate opportunities for improvement.

    The report is based on studies of a number of completed underground projects, where public planning documents have been examined and interviews with people who have had insight into the projects have been carried out. The study has identified a number of suggestions that could help improve the planning process for underground planning:

    Systematic and accessible information

    • Collect geoscientific information (including interpretations) from all underground projects in a common database.
    • Ensure that project owners and clients submit geoscientific information to such a common database.
    • The information should be archived and made searchable digitally with regard to confidential information.
    • The archives should be managed so that relevant material remains available for the appropriate length of time.

     

    Cooperation

    • Create a good collaboration climate early in the project, with relevant stakeholders.
    • Support harmonization of the application of regulations between municipalities.

     

    Strategic work

    • A coherent planning for land use above and below land at the various stages of the planning process.
    • Sub-regional resources in a regional perspective are highlighted in regional planning documents.
    • Managing target conflicts at an early stage by making them visible in both national and regional and local planning.
    • Ensure that the right level of information is developed for the various stages of the planning processes.

    Abstract [en]

    This report describes a bachelor program thesis in Technical design with orientation to production design carried out via Luleå University of Technology. The project has been performed at Reklamcentra Produktion Sverige AB and comprises 15 higher education credits.

    Reklamcentra produce and install exposure solutions, from simple stickers to more complex signage solutions, and are especially known for their LED-illuminated engraving- and paperflex signs. As a background to the project assignment, there is a potential order for 300 - 600 paperflex signs to be delivered within a four month time interval. An order of this magnitude entails new needs and conditions. The project is oriented towards production development and aims to map the production activities in order to determine needs and ultimately result in an action proposal.

     

    The five phases of the project have been defined as; Mapping & analysis, Requirement specification, Idea & concept development, Evaluation & selection and Detail processing. The implementation has followed a cyclical process where the phases have been worked through in turns with postponed focus for each turn. The survey started with a broad perspective to create a good information base on existing flows, working methods, and perceived problems within the production. The information collection is mainly obtained from interviews and observations of staff.

    Furthermore, the production process for the paperflex sign was examined more thoroughly. The sign consists of three different sheet materials which all undergo more or less extensive CNC machining and are then assembled with LED strip and detail components. Identified problems from mapping & analysis were strongly associated with the sheet materials storage units and handling. A requirement specification was drawn up containing the requirements that the conceptual solutions sought to solve and thereby established a foundation for idea development.

    In order to seek inspiration and experience regarding sheet materials in similar applications, a benchmarking was carried out at a glass wholesaler. Two potentially applicable and, in principle, different storage systems were examined in consultation with the supplier for the respective storage systems. A layout model that represented the existing production environment was established in SketchUp in order to be able to quickly implement and discuss different solution proposals. Idea and concept development resulted in three concepts that went further and were evaluated against an evaluation matrix inherited by the requirement specification. Winning concept from the evaluation were processed in detail where the sheet storage unit was dimensioned, and a mezzanine floor was introduced as a measure to provide a better order in the production environment.

     

    Final concept proposal is presented in different investment levels that can be implemented step by step. As a first measure, a new storage system is presented for arranging sheet materials and making them easily accessible and the introduction of the lean tool 5S. In order to meet the requirements specification to the greatest extent, it is recommended to install a Telfer - system with a vacuum yoke that can pick and place sheets from storage unit and on to CNC mill for machining.As a recommendation for continued work it is suggested to further investigate the telfer solution with constructor in order to ensure the realization of this principle.
