What about learning? A study of temporary agency staffing and learning conditions in Swedish health care2020In: Journal of Workplace Learning, ISSN 1366-5626, E-ISSN 1758-7859, Vol. 32, no 1, p. 63-75Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss conditions for workplace learning (WPL) in relation to temporary agency staffing (TAS), focusing on temporary and regular nurses’ experiences of social relations.

    Design/methodology/approach

Data were gathered using qualitative semi-structured interviews with five agency nurses and five regular nurses. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data.

    Findings

Similarities and differences regarding conditions for WPL among “temps” and “regulars” emerged, pointing towards both challenges and opportunities for WPL on various levels. Moreover, although challenges stood out, the context of professional work provides certain opportunities for WPL through, for example, knowledge sharing among nurses.

    Research limitations/implications

Results are valid for the interviewees’ experiences of WPL conditions. However, the findings may also have currency in other but similar workplaces and employment circumstances.

    Practical implications

Client organisations and temporary work agencies could benefit from developing management and HR strategies aimed at strengthening the opportunities for WPL, related to professional work, to ensure that these opportunities are leveraged fully.

    Originality/value

This study adopts a WPL perspective on TAS in the context of professional work, which is still rare.

Orienteringsbok: Genusdriven social innovation2015Collection (editor) (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Professional Position Positioned: The Interwoven Experience of Being a Young Adult and New at Work Analysed from a Relational Perspective of Age2024In: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research, ISSN 1103-3088, E-ISSN 1741-3222, Vol. 32, no 2, p. 142-159Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

To gain an in-depth understanding of the position of being a young adult and new at work simultaneously, this study examines the doing of age in relation to others in the lives of young adults, rather than focusing on age as a category and/or developmental phase. The study focuses on being a young adult from a critical and relational perspective of age. Based on focus group interviews with young adults, mostly women, working in retail, the aim is to analyse the position of being a young adult while new at work through age-marked relationships. The results reveal how this position can be understood both in terms of security and insecurity. Security arises in the sense of opportunities for learning and leaving responsibilities to older and more experienced colleagues. Insecurity arises in the sense of being exposed to insecure employment, the risk of being allocated less challenging tasks and being judged for failures.

Learning when new at work. A thematic analysis of interviews with young adult retail workers in Sweden2024In: Journal of Education and Work, ISSN 1363-9080, E-ISSN 1469-9435Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyse young adults’ positive experiences of learning when entering the labour market.

Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on 13 individual in-depth interviews with young adults (aged 18–28) working within the retail sector in Sweden. The interviews explored the interviewees’ experiences when entering the workforce, focusing on positive experiences of learning.

Findings: The findings highlight the relationship between learning and encounters with others both within and outside work, that is, with colleagues and customers as well as with family and friends. Learning is mostly depicted as informal and as related to work and here, more experienced colleagues, openness, trust and equality as well as self-initiative, responsibility and autonomy are highlighted.

Originality/value: Taking its point of departure in a health promotion perspective, the study reinforces the perspective of workplace learning as an interplay between contextual (work-related) factors and personal factors by highlighting the importance of relationships outside the workplace for understanding the experiences of learning when new at work. Furthermore, the study examines how the learning needs of young adults relate not only to the work itself but to the experience of entering the labour market.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we explore how telephone advisory services (TAS) and the implementation of new technology affect nurses and the nursing profession. This study shows that TAS and applied technology embodies ideas of standardisation and efficiency, and promotes an organisational professionalism such that it challenges occupational professionalism. Torn between organisational and occupational professionalism, the nurses develop strategies to deal with their contradictory demands.

The implementation of process orientation at a Swedish hospital2008In: International Journal of Health Planning and Management, ISSN 0749-6753, E-ISSN 1099-1751, Vol. 23, no 3, p. 219-233Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the last decade, as a response to the need for inter- as well as intra-organizational integration, management models initially developed for industry have been spread to health care organizations. Based on 62 in-depth interviews, this qualitative study aims at describing and analyzing the limited success of implementation of process orientation at a Swedish hospital and in doing so, the traditional and the critical approaches are combined. Applying a traditional approach, the limited success of the implementation of process orientation is explained in terms of difficulties to challenge deeply institutionalized organizational routines and the inter-disciplinary boundaries. This might be condensed to the dilemma of how to maintain and develop the specialization of the medical profession while focusing process rather than function and how to enhance inter-organizational integration without hampering intra-organizational collaboration. Applying a critical approach, the limited success is explained in terms of a differentiated translation process and in terms of separation of talk and practice. This means that process orientation, notwithstanding that it might be an efficient tool for the type of integration needed, might be regarded as part of a change discourse, aiming at conveying a picture of an efficient and modern organization.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish public sector is characterised by comprehensive organisational changes, often discussed in terms of New Public Management (NPM). NPM implies a transfer of management ideas from the private sector to the public sector, leading to new and changed principles for governance and organisation of the public sector. Within the health care sector this is illustrated by an emphasis on for example efficiency, accessibility and patient centred care. These changes are described in terms of a challenge of welfare sector professionals, as many of the characteristics traditionally having been linked to professional work are challenged by NPM. With departure in the above described, the aim of this dissertation is to discuss how changes in governance and organisation of Swedish health care influence the nursing profession. The dissertation is based on qualitative studies (interviews and text analysis) of two change processes in Swedish health care. The first study focuses an attempt to introduce process orientation at a hospital, and the second study an increased push for telephone advice services within a primary care organisation. In this dissertation, theories on organisation as well as professions are applied, as these complement each other in explaining the studied processes. In an attempt to understand why the changes studied are taking place right now, and whether they can be seen as expressions of NPM, institutional theory is applied. More specifically, the connection between organisational changes and the "package" of ideas regarding organisation of work that characterises the institutional environment is explained. The institutional theory also helps explain what happens when institutionalised ideas meet local practices. When it comes to how the nurses are affected by and experience the changes studied, theory on sociology of professions is applied. The relation between organisation and profession is in focus here, rather than the nursing profession as such. The result shows that the studied changes can be linked to NPM and lead to a challenge of the professional logic. The results point at a tension between organisation and profession. At the same time it becomes clear how the professionals still act based on their professional values; occupational professionalism. This illustrates the strength of the professional system.

Conditions for Workplace Learning Among Professional ‘Temps’: A Qualitative Study of Temporary Agency Nurses in Sweden2022In: Vocations and Learning, ISSN 1874-785X, E-ISSN 1874-7868, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 155-176Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Adopting a theoretical perspective that acknowledges both formal and informal learning as crucial and emphasises reproductive and developmental learning as complementary, this article analyses and discusses temporary agency nurses’ experiences of working and learning, focusing on conditions for workplace learning. This provides opportunities to address questions about conditions for the integration of work and learning in a work situation characterised by flexibilization and individualisation. More specifically, among individuals moving between different organizational contexts rather than working at ‘a’ (single and stable) workplace provided by the employer. By presenting findings based on a thematic analysis of 21 interviews with individual temporary agency nurses working in Swedish health care, both opportunities and challenges for workplace learning is highlighted. While opportunities for informal learning linked to the movement between various client organizations as well as to nursing as common ground and as valued and recognized competence, is identified, at the same time, challenges connected to both formal and informal learning, are also illuminated. Regarding informal learning, challenges in terms of varied and general support and feedback as well as scarce opportunities and low expectations for the temporary agency nurses’ participation in development work in daily work/at client organizations, is identified. The findings thus also illuminate a risk for temporary agency nurses adjusting to prevailing working conditions rather than engaging in developmental learning. Regarding formal learning, challenges in terms of few opportunities for planned learning activities, is identified. All in all, the findings illuminate conditions for workplace learning for temporary agency nurses as clearly dependent not only on the offers of specific temporary work agencies and client organisations, but also on temporary agency nurses’ interest in and views regarding responsibility for learning, and thus highly varying.

    Abstract [en]

    Objectives

The aim of this study is to describe critical care nurses (CCN’s) experiences of working with or as temporary agency staff.

    Research methodology

This explorative qualitative study is based on interviews with five agency CCNs and five regular CCNs, a total of ten interviews, focusing on the interviewees’ experiences of daily work and temporary agency staffing. The interviews were analysed manually and thematically following an inductive approach.

    Findings

Four themes that illustrate both similarities and differences between regular and temporary agency CCNs emerged: “working close to patients versus being responsible for everything”, “teamwork versus independence”, “both groups needed” and “opportunities and challenges”.

    Conclusion

The study findings illustrate the complexity of the working situation for agency and regular staff in terms of the organisation and management of the temporary agency nurses and the opportunities and challenges faced by both groups.

    Abstract [sv]

Purpose – Effects of NPM in professional work are often discussed on an overriding level, and professionals' own experiences of their working conditions in their specific work contexts have been less discussed (Hasselbladh et al. and Liljegren). In an attempt to consider this concern, this paper seeks to focus on individual professionals, exemplified by teachers and nurses, and their experiences of intra-professional relations, i.e. teachers' relations with other teachers and nurses' relations with other nurses. Design/methodology/approach – Applying a theoretical framework on professions and professional work, the aim is to discuss the meaning of intra-professional relations, and how NPM-influenced changes in the organisation of work affect these relations. Moreover, possible effects of the organisational changes for the professionals will be discussed. It is argued that intra-professional relations are essential for professionals; at the same time the cases discussed illuminate how changes in the organisation of work influence intra-professional relations, in ways that highlight the tension between profession and organisation. Findings – The findings can be seen as an illustration of consequences of the adoption of NPM-influenced governance ideals; this paper sees the organisational changes as deriving from the managements' focus on “the customer in centre of attention”, in the form of interdisciplinary work teams and TAS. Originality/value – The paper shows that, through investigating how individual professionals experience their work, consequences of NPM-related governance changes are unveiled.

Excluded or included – structural preconditions for occupational well-being among blue-collar temporary agency workers within the Swedish manufacturing industry2024In: Journal of Critical Realism, ISSN 1476-7430, E-ISSN 1572-5138, Vol. 23, no 3, p. 313-333Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to explore structural preconditions for occupational well-being among blue-collar temporary agency workers within the Swedish manufacturing industry based on managers’ views and expectations of the worker. Through 25 interviews, we investigate how blue-collar temporary agency workers are seen by management using critical realism and the concept of ‘norm circles’ to analyse spatial, relational, sociotechnical and normative structures. We show how structures and norm circles possess alienating or dealienating mechanisms that precondition blue-collar temporary agency workers’ occupational well-being. The findings indicate management’s role as an important gatekeeper in determining structural preconditions for blue-collar temporary agency workers’ occupational well-being. By introducing aspects of skill and acquired skill, along with social aspects changing over time, this article contributes to the existing literature on blue-collar temporary agency workers’ occupational well-being.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article explores how social innovation on the regional, sub-national, level helps pinpoint socially inclusive change for smart, inclusive and sustainable growth in European regional development policy. The article presents and analyzes new and unique data on regional social innovation from northern Sweden, where a participatory research approach was used to develop new theoretical and practical knowledge in cooperation between researchers and concerned societal actors. The study exposes that the studied examples pinpoint crucial elements by acknowledging the relevance of power-related dimensions such as gender, ethnicity, class, sexuality, rurality etc. when distinguishing societal challenges, social needs and social improvements, the relevance of civil society engagement when developing new solutions, the importance of interaction across personal, organizational, sectoral and spatial boundaries, and the importance of highlighting and challenging power-relations that ascribe higher status to a limited range of groups, organizations, sectors, perspectives and innovation forms.

Employer representatives’ experiences of supporting employees with cognitive impairments in a digital work environment2024In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assessment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 79, no 3, p. 1343-1356Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Digital work poses cognitive demands on all employees, but the impact is greater for employees with cognitive impairments. Digitalization also has significant implications for employer representatives as they are responsible for the work environment. However, knowledge is scarce concerning employer representatives’ perspectives on identifying needs and support for employees with cognitive impairments working in a digital work environment.

OBJECTIVE: To describe employer representatives’ experiences of work environment management with focus on employees with cognitive impairments working in a digital environment.METHODS:Focus group methodology was used. Six employer representatives with work environment responsibilities participated.

RESULTS: One overall theme “Mastering the interconnected processes in a transformative digital work environment” as well as three themes “Facilitating good digital work conditions”, “Identifying needs and difficulties in work tasks among employees’ with cognitive impairments” and “Pursuing knowledge and collaborations to support employees with cognitive impairments” with subthemes were identified. The themes describe employer representatives’ challenges and efforts to identify fluctuating needs in employees with cognitive impairments and, also, to organize and reduce cognitive demands in the work environment to support them.

CONCLUSIONS: Managing the challenges of an evolving digital work environment and matching individual work ability of employees with cognitive impairments in relation to cognitive demands is an ongoing process. The participants valued cooperation with employees with cognitive impairments but lacked support from expertise. The need to develop and implement a functioning support system for vocational rehabilitation to ensure a sustainable work in digital work environments is indicated.

New conditions for identities, cultures and governance of welfare sector professionals: The teaching profession2012In: Ephemera : Theory and Politics in Organization, ISSN 2052-1499, E-ISSN 1473-2866, Vol. 12, no 3, p. 294-308Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with changes in governance of professional work in relation to the concept of professional identity. Professional work is often depicted as an essential part of today’s society. At the same time, the conditions for professional work are changing – especially in the public sector. These changes can be seen in terms of an on-going interaction between the logic of the profession and the logic of the organisation where the concept of identity can be used to examine the dynamics of the changes and their consequences. In thispaper, the teaching profession is used to illustrate changing conditions for professional work in the public sector. We identify processes of diversification of professional identity and culture, some of which can be described as processes of marginalization. This approach can provide a theoretical point of departure for studying professional work – in the context of changed governance – by focusing on the concept of identity as an analytical point of reference. This approach explains organizational dynamics in terms of what changes are desired and what changes are unintentional.

Learning and Differentiation within Professions—The Cases of Teaching and Nursing2023In: Professionalism and Social Change: Processes of Differentiation Within, Between and Beyond Professions / [ed] Lara Maestripieri; Andrea Bellini, Springer Nature, 2023, p. 125-142Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, the education sector and the healthcare sector have historically been, and still are, to a large extent state run, with both being publicly funded and delivered: typical in a social democratic system. However, various reforms have led to private actors entering the arena as additional organisations that employ welfare sector professionals. In this chapter, we discuss the learning conditions of welfare sector professionals in relation to the various types of employers and employment settings that currently exist, both public and private. We use two different cases: first, the education sector, where we have seen the introduction and expansion of private employers for teachers, meaning teachers can be employed either by a private or public employer. Second, we examine the case of nurses working in the healthcare sector, which has seen the introduction and expansion of temporary agency staffing, meaning that nurses with different employers work side by side in the very same workplace. Based on a compilation of our own previous empirical research, we discuss ways in which the privatisation reforms amplify differentiation within professions, with a specific focus on conditions for learning.

Teachers’ Working Conditions amid Swedish School Choice Reform: Avenues for Further Research2016In: Professions & Professionalism, E-ISSN 1893-1049, Vol. 6, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1990s, governance changes, including customer choice agen-das, have permeated the public sector and, consequently, welfare sector profession-als’ work. One example is the education sector. The aim of this paper is to identify and discuss avenues for further research when it comes to teachers’ working condi-tions in the light of current choice agendas. This is accomplished by presenting an overview of previous studies on implications of the reforms for teachers’ working conditions. How are these conditions described in relation to the current school choice agenda in Sweden? What directions should be applied to increase knowledge of these conditions? We conclude by identifying some avenues for further research: the issues of organization of work, temporal and spatial dimensions of working con-ditions, and finally comparative studies of various forms, are suggested as warrant-ing further investigation to highlight the diversified labor market in which teachers find themselves today.

Differentiation as a Consequence of Choice and Decentralization Reforms: Conditions for Teachers' Competence Development2017In: Professions & Professionalism, E-ISSN 1893-1049, Vol. 7, no 2, article id e1855Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the conditions for teacher competence development as they relate to the current restructured governance of the education sector in Sweden. In reviewing the literature, contextual factors in the workplace are often pointed out as central to conditions for competence development. However, we argue that a sector-level approach is useful in examining and explaining competence development conditions, especially in times of governance change. We describe how a workplace’s geographical location and budgetary situation, along with its size and age, relate to how teachers experience their working conditions. The findings indicate that the organization of work at a local workplace level impacts the conditions for competence development. Moreover, various regional and local characteristics seem to affect the conditions for competence development in that the organization and governance of the education sector create different conditions for competence development

Illusion eller verklighet?: planerade förändringar i företag2008 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Capturing Stories of How Young Adults Experience Entry Into the Workforce: A Qualitative Research Protocol on Data Collection During the Ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic2021In: International Journal of Qualitative Methods, E-ISSN 1609-4069, Vol. 20Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

In present research protocol, the project entitled “A sustainable working life for young adults—leadership, learning, and insecurity” is presented and discussed. The study which aims to describe and analyze the expectations of young adults in the retail workforce in terms of leadership, learning and development and how these aspects can be understood from a health promotion perspective. The project is limited to young adults (18–28 years) employed in a retail setting.

    Methods:

The project is based on qualitative data collected through focus group interviews and individual interviews made during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in year 2020 what here will be reflected upon.

    Discussion:

It is concluded data collection carried out during the ongoing spread of the coronavirus, may be significant to what interviewees highlighted in the interviews, but also to what was not discussed in the interviews. It may be the case that the increased focus on the coronavirus meant that other issues that are important to young adults as they establish themselves in the labor market were overshadowed.

Sense of security when new at work: a thematic analysis of interviews with young adult retail workers in Sweden2021In: International Journal of Workplace Health Management, ISSN 1753-8351, E-ISSN 1753-836X, Vol. 14, no 6, p. 620-633Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - Positive examples of situations in which young adults new at work experience feeling secure in the role as novice in the work force are here focused. The aim is to analyze how young adults who are new to the labor market express having a sense of security in the workplace. The long-term goal is to strengthen the conditions for the health and wellbeing of workers entering the retail labor market.

Design/methodology/approach - Thirteen individual in-depth telephone/video-interviews were conducted with young adults (aged 18–28) working within the retail sector in Sweden. Using a thematic interview schedule, the interviews focused how the interviewees contextualizing stories on being novice at the labor market. The study is based on those parts of the material in which stories on feeling secure was expressed.

Findings - The analysis resulted in two themes: A sense of security is related to carrying out work safely and a sense of security is related to receiving support. The first theme illuminates how work is structured and safety training respectively contributes to a sense of security and the latter reveal how social support from a variety of sources (managers, colleagues and others outside the work environment) contributes to a sense of security when new at work.

Originality/value - Using a health promoting perspective, the study complements the existing perspectives of challenges faced by novices as they enter working life. Also, the study highlights the importance of including relations outside the workplace when searching for the understanding of the experiences of being new at work. The study indicates that focusing on the sense of security by well-structured work, safety training and social support might contribute to the strive for a sustainable working life for young adults.
