Ricercar in aSteigleder's first five ricercari form a group which can be understood as a metacomposition, i.e. a continuous development can be perceived from Ricercar I to V (all of which are four-voiced) after which another group follows (Ricercar VI to XII, all of which are three-voiced). This interesting collection is, therefore, in addition to being a treatise on what Steigleder considers the ricercar to be, but also a cycle of works containing two parts.
